Human, Centoraurian

« on: April 28, 2008, 06:40:10 PM »

Name: Alyssa “Lyss” Mineu
Gender: Female
Age: 29

Race: Human
Tribe: Centoraurian

Occupation: Dancer
Title: Equine Terpsichorean

Appearance

Height: 1 ped, 2 fores, 2 nailsbreadths
Weight: 1 pygge, 1 heb
Hair Colour: Adlemirene Brown
Eye Colour: Cinnabrown

Physical Appearance
Alyssa “Lyss” Mineu is, at 1 ped, 2 fores, 2 nailsbreadths, a slender beauty. She has a crown of dark brown hair, which is usually woven into a pigtail. Her skin is lightly tanned, due to hours under the sun training her dancing. She has a heart-shaped face, with almond-shaped brown eyes, a sharp pert nose and small full lips. When she smiles, a dimple can be seen in her left cheek.

Lyss has a long, swan-like neck. Her well-defined body is her blessing, her larger-than-preferred posterior the bane of her life. Her legs are toned, as she exercises every day.

Clothing
Lyss’s hair is tied up with a white ribbon, with big black polka-dots on it. This was a gift from her mother, a seamstress. When at home, she wears a long pastel pink sleeveless dress made from cotton. In summer, she will wear a pair of grey sandals.

When travelling or performing, she dons a pale orange short-sleeved cotton blouse which ends in a kilt at her knees. Under the kilt, she wears black cotton pants. Usually seen on her is a brown belt around her waist. Under sunlight, the belt’s metal buckle reflects light, glinting brightly. Attached to the belt is a small brown pouch, about 14 by 11 nailsbreadths. This little pouch contains all her “necessities” (such as her armoured fan, comb, singing fingers, etc). Brown leather boots would then be seen on her feet.

During cold weather, Lyss will wear an old leather cape which she has had from age 16. In winter, she wears the same leather boots that she wears when performing.

Personality

Compared to other Centoraurians, Lyss is rather vain. This is because she is a performer, and she needs to take care and keep up her appearances. She also is quick-tempered, and can easily fly into a rage when provoked. Lyss can be muddleheaded at times, which is a major flaw of hers. She gets frustrated when she forgets important things, like appointments with friends, as she is also impatient.

However, Lyss is usually a very cheerful woman. This is because she spends her time doing what she likes, and makes a living performing, which is one of her hobbies. She is also optimistic, and will always be hopeful and positive about life. Another good trait of Lyss’s is that she cares a lot about her family and her horse, Quillý’fá’lýth, Lýth for short. She is filial towards her parents, and always grooms Lýth well.

Like a typical Centoraurian, Lyss is straightforward and always talks before thinking. This, with her quick temper, has been the cause of many misunderstandings with family and friends.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Strengths
• Dancing skills
o Dancing is her main way of performing. This earns her money.

• Mastery of the Singing Fingers
o Mastering the Singing Fingers has added much musical delight to her dances. Lyss also enjoys composing original tunes on the instrument.

• Mastery of the Armoured Fan
o The Armoured Fan is not just a dancing prop for Lyss; it is also her defense weapon. She brings her Fan along wherever she goes, to protect herself.

• Optimism
o Lyss’s optimistic nature makes it easy for her to look on the bright side of life, and so she never gives up easily.

• Frankness
o A nicer connotation of being straightforward, this describes the benefits of being frank. Everyone would understand what Lyss is talking about, as she doesn’t beat about the bush.

• Possession of a horse
o Lýth, besides being a familiar, is also Lyss’s main mode of travelling (besides walking). Horses move faster than humans, and so are able to cover greater distance in the same amount of time.

Weaknesses
• Quick temper
o Lyss’s quick temper is her downfall. Due to her temper, she has caused quite a few misunderstandings with her family and friends. Fortunately, she always manages to clear up these misunderstandings.

• Bluntness
o A not-so-nice connotation of being straightforward, this is about the disadvantages of being blunt. People sometimes get offended by the blunt, yet true, words uttered by Lyss.

• Vainness
o Being vain has caused Lyss to be unpunctual several times, as she will take a long time to prettify herself.

• Forgetfulness
o As mentioned, this is Lyss’s major flaw. She can forget small things, like putting her comb in her pouch, to big things, like missing appointments. Lyss will get frustrated when her forgetfulness acts up from time to time.

• Impatience
o Lyss’s impatience been the cause of several careless acts, such as cutting herself with her Armoured Fan while in training.

History

Background Information
The Shiries (Lyss's mum's side of the family) used to live in Horth. The Shiries had three daughters - Kaelyn, Julienne and Analiese. Kaelyn was four years older than Julienne, who in turn was another four years older than Analiese.

On one of the Shiries' outings to the Xara House Auctions (Kaelyn's father was a horse breeder), a male elf approached her father to trade some silverwork for a horse. Then, Kaelyn was 14. The elf was a Sanhorrhim silversmith, and his works were beautiful. Kaelyn overheard him speaking in Styrásh to some other elves. She was immediately fascinated by the language, and the way the words seemed to roll off one's tongue. It was a beautiful language, she felt. Kaelyn approached the elf, who wrote some basic Styrásh down on a piece of paper for her, along with their pronunciations. He told her he would be back within a week, and would bring her a thicker manual of Styrásh for her to learn, if she could finish learning the basic words he had already written down for her. Kaelyn agreed, they decided to meet a week later at the same place.

Exactly a week later, the Sanhorrhim was back, and Kaelyn demonstrated what she had learnt. The elf seemed pleased, and passed her a manual. Kaelyn was terribly grateful to the elf, and set her heart on learning Styrásh. Three and a half years later, she had perfected her Styrásh, or at least, everything that was included in the manual. It had contained enough words for Kaelyn to be able to converse with elves, but not every word in Styrásh.

On the Shiries' next trip to the Xara Horse Auctions, Kaelyn met a Centoraurian, named Jacques Mineu. He was a young man of age 19. After chatting with him for a while, Kaelyn realised that they had many things in common - for one, a love for horses; for another, a love for children. They would soon come to share another: a love for each other.

Kaelyn and Jacques became fast friends, and even though distance separated them (Jacques lived in Thyslan), they met up frequently. This platonic friendship soon became a romantic relationship. When Kaelyn was around 18, they finally got the consent of their parents to get married. Kaelyn then moved to Thyslan to live with Jacques.

A few months after Kaelyn's marriage to Jacques, a woman came to visit. That year, Analiese was 10 years old. Analiese and Julienne were curious, and hid around, eavesdropping on the conversation. It turned out that the visitor was a horse trainer, and the children's father had asked for her to train a few of his horses. Analiese was intrigued by the woman's occupation, and when the lady was leaving, Analiese ran out through the back door and met her at the gate. After a brief conversation with her, she found out that the lady trained horses to gallop faster and such, but also did some side-work, such as teaching them to perform, or do some tricks.

The lady would come back, as the girls' father had engaged her to train his horses. Analiese herself had a young mare, and wanted the mare to be trained to do some tricks. The lady agreed to help. A few weeks later, Analiese and the lady went to a nearby pasture area to train her mare. Analiese learnt from the woman, and slowly, her mare picked up some skills. Analiese was very excited and thanked the lady appreciatively.

That same year, news came from Thyslan that Kaelyn had given birth to a baby girl! She was christened Alyssa Mineu. The Shiries went to Thyslan to take a look at the baby, with Julienne and Analiese pronouncing the baby the most "adorable little bambino" they had ever seen.

As Analiese grew up, she picked up some dancing skills on her own. She aspired to be a famous dancer, bringing glory and fame to her family. When she was 18, she went to Salsair for the Festival of the Horse. She saw many dancers there, and, after the festival, went to find one of them. She asked for some tips on dancing, and the dancer taught her some tricks. After the week-long festival, Analiese returned to Horth, and practised even more on her dancing.

Two years later, Analiese moved to Salsair to continue with her dancing. Julienne stayed with her parents in Horth.

After the birth of Alyssa Mineu
Alyssa Mineu was born to Jacques and Kaelyn Mineu in a typical Centoraurian house, situated in Thyslan. The house was a large, two-story-high building, and had wings containing a stable, workshop, granary and storage house. The interior of the house was well-furnished, with beautiful wooden furniture and some unique valuable antiques.

When Alyssa was born, she was chubby, with pink cheeks and a smile that seemed perennial while it lasted. When she did cry, it was loud and called for immediate attention. Perhaps this was the first clue that when the little baby grew up, she would go for fame, rather than stability.

As Alyssa was about 6 years old, she went out more often, and made some new friends. By then, it was more or less seen that she was very healthy, and had a sharp tongue. Alyssa and her new friends soon decided that they should each have a nickname, and there came her unofficial name, which from then on stuck: Lyss.

It should be mentioned here that Lyss’s father was a horse breeder, and her mother a seamstress, who was rather proficient in Styrásh. After 6 more years of her life, Lyss suddenly decided that she wanted to be a performer when she grew up. Perhaps this was because of the Festival of the Horse in Salsair, which her parents had brought her to when she was 10. Lyss was entranced by the Grande Pageant, especially the singers and dancers.

To humour Lyss, Jacques and Kaelyn decided to bring her to Salsair once again, but time for a couple of months, instead of a week. Lyss had an aunt who lived in Salsair, and was rather proficient in dancing. They would miss Lyss, but this was the only way to make her happy.

So, after packing some clothes and other belongings, Lyss went to Salsair to stay with her aunt, Analiese Shiry. Aunt Analiese lived in a house similar in size and shape to that of Lyss’s own, but without the extra wings. The house emanated a homey feel, what with all the flowers and dim lights.

Within the two months, Aunt Analiese taught Lyss some basic dancing steps, like twirling and leaping. Lyss also learnt to walk with grace, and how to show poise. It was an exhilarating experience for Lyss, and after the two months, she was even more intrigued by the art of dancing.

Back home, Lyss implored her parents to let her learn dancing. Jacques and Kaelyn were at a loss about what to do – let her learn and leave them, or keep her in Thyslan and away from her desire? It was, rather, a moral dilemma, and caused the Mineus much misery.

After some discussion, Jacques and Kaelyn decided to allow Lyss to pursue dancing, but only when she became 19. Until then, Lyss would stay at home, and help with the chores. Lyss was contented with the arrangement, and things went smoothly from then on.

A few years later, Jacques was called to Milkengrad “to meet an old friend”. Lyss was not in on the secret, and the then 17-year-old pestered her mother to tell her the secret. “It’s a surprise, honey,” Kaelyn would say, and smile mysteriously every time Lyss asking.

Two days later, Jacques arrived home – with a young horse. The horse (a filly, in fact) was for Lyss, for when she went to Salsair again, she would need some mode of transportation, as Jacques would not be going with her. His friend, a merchant in woollens, had a mare which had given birth a few years before. The merchant had promised Jacques a filly once it had reached 3 years of age. Now, the filly had changed hands.

“What name would you like to give her?” Jacques asked Lyss.

“Something to do with love…”

“Quillý’fá’lýth!” Kaelyn suddenly exclaimed, “It means Dancer of Love. I thought it would suit you, since you like dancing so much.” Kaelyn smiled, and then continued, “You can call her Lýth for short.”

And this was how Lyss got her horse, Lýth. Lyss trained hard to learn how to ride a horse, and finished learning in 2 years. By then, she was 19, and time to embark on her dancing training.

Back at Salsair with Aunt Analiese, Lyss trained somemore with dancing. One night, she suddenly had an inspiration – using her horse in her dance routines! Her name did mean “Dancer of Love”. After all, hadn’t she seen some horses performing before? The next morning, she spoke to her aunt about the idea, and Analiese agreed to incorporate Lýth into the routine.

Lýth, now having been with Lyss for two years, was very close to her owner. At 5 years of age, she was now a young mare. It was easy to train Lýth into a performing horse. After a few years, Analiese gave Lyss an armoured fan. The fan, Lyss’s aunt said, was a dancing prop, but could be used as a defense weapon, too.

Now, Lyss trained with a prop. Due to her impatience, she often cut herself with the sharp blades of the fan. However, she slogged away, day and night, to improve her skills. Her hard work paid off, and after three years, she mastered the Armoured Fan.

Then, Aunt Analiese advised Lyss to add music into her dances. Lyss’s aunt did not want to give her any idea on how to include the music element into her dances, and Lyss could not think of any way to add music.

Then, a few weeks later, Jacques arrived at Aunt Analiese from Cemphiria. He had brought a set of items along with him. The items were bought from a trader, and they were Singing Fingers! The answer to my dreams! Lyss thought. She hugged her father gratefully and started practising with the instruments.

First, Lyss had to figure out which chimes played which notes. Then, she had to find the perfect combination for wearing on her fingers – there were 30 of them! She had to curb her impatience – any slight movement of her fingers would cause a sound. It was tough, but Lyss persisted, and finally, she succeeded.

Lyss was already 26 years old. Elated at having mastered dancing, she rode back to Thyslan on Lýth. Lýth was now 12 years old and very close to her owner. They were almost inseparable, and cared a lot for each other. To Lyss, Lýth was more than a horse, she was like her sister.

Back at Thyslan, Lyss was warmly welcomed back by her family, especially Kaelyn, who had missed her terribly and not seen her for the 7 years Lyss had spent at Salsair. Lyss was now a grown woman, and could get married. But she didn’t want to.

“I want to perform, dance for the masses and find happiness in their delight.” That was what Lyss said to her parents when the topic of marriage was broached. And that was that.

Lyss moved around the area to perform her dances, constantly improving herself. Kaelyn had made a white hair ribbon (with black polka-dots on it) for Lyss.  Two years later, Jacques and Kaelyn invited Analiese to their house, partly to help Lyss with her dancing, partly to better keep in contact with one another.

Now, 29 years old, Lyss still lives with her family at Thyslan, in the same house where she was born. Even though she travels around the area to perform, she returns home for periods of time to take care of her parents and aunt. However, she aches to travel further and to the corners of Sarvonia. “Aunt Analiese can take care of my parents; she is just 39,” Lyss often reasons to herself.

Belongings

Weapons
Armoured Fan:
Lyss’s armoured fan is a gift from her Aunt Analiese. The bottoms of the metal plates are infused with styruine, making it look yellowish-green. The colours change as it moves up the plates, changing to teki red at the tops of the plates. There are 11 plates in her fan, all with sharp edges. Lyss keeps her fan in a wooden box before placing it in her pouch, to prevent the sharp edges of the plates from digging a hole in her pouch.

General Stuff
Cloth bag:
The cloth bag is big and brown. Lyss carries it around when travelling. In it is all her spare clothing, including her leather cloak and dress. Her only piece of clothing not brought about is her slippers, which are kept at her house in Thyslan.

Pouch:
The pouch is small, and also brown. It is buckled onto her belt, and in it contains the wooden box with her fan, a small container with all her singing fingers, a comb, some spare food in a pocket of its own, and some money. The size of the pouch is about 14 by 11 nailsbreadths.

Familiars

Quillý’fá’lýth, Centoraurian Horse
Name: Quillý’fá’lýth (Lýth for short)
Gender: Female
Age: 15

Race: Horse
Breed: Centoraurian Horse

Overview

Lýth was given to Lyss when she was 3. Trained to be a performing horse, she enjoys performing with Lyss. Inseparable, the two go about everywhere together.

Appearance

Height: 1 ped, 3 palmspans, 2 nailbreadths
Hair colour: Ithild
Mane colour: Nor’sidian
Eye colour: Nor’sidian

Physical Appearance
Lýth is a Centoraurian horse, and has an ithild-coloured coat and a nor’sidian mane. Her nor’sidian eyes are widely spaced, with long dark lashes framing them. Her mane and tail are luxurious and thick, but easy to comb. Her long slim legs end in elongated fetlocks and small, elegant hooves.

If anyone looks closely enough at her coat, they would realise that at Lýth’s neck, there is a small scribble in ink. It is actually Lýth’s name (Quillý’fá’lýth Mineu) in Stýrash. As it is partially covered by her mane, and written in tiny words, it is barely noticeable, even at a short distance.

Lýth’s eyes sometimes seem to talk. She has different expressions for hunger, sadness and such. If she is scared, her eyes will open wider than usual, making her look alarmed.

Personality

Lýth is an intelligent horse. She somehow understands Lyss and when her owner is feeling irritated or dispirited, she will go over and whinny pitifully, till Lyss cheers up. She loves her owner very much, and would risk her life to save Lyss is she is in danger. Trained to be a performing horse, dancing with Lyss is one of her favourite things to do.

Lýth is also child-like. At times, she will be very temperamental and refuse to listen to Lyss’s commands. Other times, she would be very angelic, and be very sweet and seraphic. Though rather childish, Lýth still retains a “professional” attitude towards her and Lyss’s performances, and would control her temper during the dances.

Hello Alyssa, welcome to Santharia! I'd like to start off by saying this is incredibly well written and well connected into our world.  :)

Regarding your distance question~ I do not believe that it would take him very long at all. Seeing as the two cities are in the same province, fairly close to each other. The Thirsty Herald is about the same distance away from Strata, and it is said that it only takes a couple of hours to get there. On horse that is. So he technically *could* get there and back in one day, though I don't know if he took his own horse there with him. Though this is assuming he spends only a minimal amount of time actually purchasing/bargaining for the horse. I would have him leave one morning, spend the night there, then return the next day in the afternoon.

But, as I said. This is really well written and I don't think your approval process will be long at all.  hug

Thanks, Eléyr!

I changed it there to two days, because he could have spent some time catching up with his friend. I do hope my approval process won't be long at all. *crosses my fingers*  grin

Hi Alyssa and welcome to Santharia. You have a nice CD here.  :D  ;)

Two questions - How did Lyss learn to actually train a horse to be a performing animal?

Secondly, a small bit, but where/how did her mother learn Styrash?

Otherwise, I like the character and it is a well written CD.  :D

Hey, Azhira! The first question is rather tough.  buck But I'll try my best to answer!

Before I answer the two questions, here's a story that might help your understanding. :)

The Shiries (Lyss's mum's side of the family) used to live in Horth. The Shiries had three daughters - Kaelyn, Julienne and Analiese. Kaelyn was eight years older than Analiese, but they were closer than twins. Two separate incidents happened in this town, which will help to answer your questions.

A few years later, she had perfected her Styrásh, or at least, everything that was included in the manual. It had contained enough words for Kaelyn to be able to converse with elves, but not every word in Styrásh.

Another incident that happened took place before Lyss was born, but in the same year. Analiese was 10 years old that year. That day, around Sunreign, a woman came to visit. The three children were curious, and hid around, eavesdropping on the conversation.

---

Answers to your questions!

1. Analiese passed on what she had learnt from the horse trainer to Lyss. So, basically, Lyth learnt what Analiese's mare had learnt! It was rather basic things like jumping over a fence, grabbing some ribbons or such with her mouth.

2. Yeah, as explained by the "story". Kaelyn learnt Styrásh from the Sanhorrhim silversmith.

---

Now, my question! :)
Is the little story ok? And do I have to include it in my CD for better understanding? :D

Yeah, that should probably go in the CD, seeing as the reason you had to write it was because something wasn't explained that she thought should have been.  ;)

Very interesting character you have here! I think you're almost ready for an approval, I'd just like to know one thing: how long has she trained with her armoured fan? This is something you can add either to the history or to the strengths. In the history you say that she 'soon' masters the armoured fan, but mastering any skill is not something you do 'soon', it takes a long time to be proficient with anything. It's definitely possible with her age... A small reference should be enough, and then I think you're ready to go :)
