Title: Chapter 1 - To the Mountains
Post by: Shan Gutarus on November 02, 2003, 04:18:22 PM
Dawn broke on the horizon and light began filtering through the thick foliage of the Auturian Woods. The early morning light brought with it the sounds of awakening life and splashed the waking forest with refreshing color.

A dark figure lay in in a patch of brush, dew glistening off a dark ebony coat of fur. The figure stirred as light poured across its face and bright blue eyes opened suddenly and glanced around. The great cat, a shingar with jet fur, got onto it's feet slowly and yawned widely, displaying its razor sharp, pearly white teeth and a long tongue.

Shan, as the cat had once been called, peered through the brush with keen blue eyes as it walked slowly, silently, through the thick brush. No trails came through here.

A long black tail swayed lazily behind his great muscular body, the dawning sun's rays playing upon the slightly damp fur of the cat as Shan moved past trees and bushes and towards the smell of smoke that the sharp sense of the cat could pick up easily.

Shanvorin finally broke through the brush to come into a slight clearing. In the corner, against a tree, sat a young elfmaid with bright red hair tied back into a ponytail. Her hazel eyes gazed into a fire before her. Shan padded slowly over to the woman, his heavy paws nearly the size of dinner plates, pushing the grass down under his weight. He came to lie across the fire from the woman, who looked up at an animal that was normally feared and respected in the woods with a casual gaze of familiarity.

Shan yawned again, this time mostly for show, and got comfortable on the damp grass by the fire. It was the same as every other morning these two had shared. Shan would come to her camp and wait for the elf to finish her morning meal. Then they would walk east, through the thick forest, resting and allowing time for each to eat. It was beginning to bore Shan, but there was nothing he could do about it. The words of the mage still burned in his mind.

Ive scattered three figures, and Ive said that before. Find these green statues, no less and no more

Oh how he hated that mage! Look what he's done Shan thought grudgingly to himself He's turned me into a cat, with his horrible magic. Crazy old man. I'll show him. I'll turn myself back into a human, go home, and then we'll show him. I'll hunt him down and turn him into a servant. He'll work for me and I'll never let him leave. Shan let out a satisfied purr, something he had learned to do just a few days prior, and rolled over in the grass and stretched out. He glanced up at the elfmaid who was studying the parchment that held the song the old mage had given him. She studied it daily, reading it and rereading it. She must have it memorized by now Shan thought to himself, watching her with his unsettling blue eyes.

A small whisp of smoke traveled up from a small clearing in the woods. Paladia, a young elfmaid, had just finished packing up camp. Her pack and bow lay on the ground beside her, and she prodded at the fire with a stick.

The brush rustled with movement and the Kaierian warrior tensed, her hand ready by her bow and quiver. But she could breath easier and relax as the shingar cat emerged from the brush. It had been nearly a month since Pally decided to follow the cat to lead on her adventure, and since then, she had grown quite used to the cat. It seemed no more dangerous than a house cat to her now.

Not quite hungry enough yet to got out for her morning meal, Paladia pulled a parchment from her pocket and unraveled it. She read it over and over daily, always thinking of new ways to figure it out. But she could never figure out more of the song that she already had. Pally knew from the song, now, that they must travel the dwarven mountains to the east. There they would find something, but the elf wasn't quite sure what.

Sighing, she rolled it back up and placed it back into her pocket. The cat was staring at her now, with those eyes. Pally was terribly curious about those eyes. She had never heard of a wild cat with such bright, blue eyes. And their gaze was so knowing, so intelligent.

"What do you think about, Midnight Cat, when you see things around you? What do you think when you look at me?" she asked aloud. Pally talked often to the shingar aloud, and she beleived that he understood what she was saying.

"What do you think about, Midnight Cat, when you see things around you? What do you think when you look at me?"

Shan looked up. I think you're going crazy. Talking to cats and the lot the shingar thought, standing slowly. He passed the fire and stood by Paladia. Nudging her with his nose, and nearly knocking her over, Shan urged her to get up. They were nearing the edge of the forest and Shan wanted to get this silly adventure over with. He was starting to get used to the body, learning how to walk without tripping, and was even starting to run.

Pally sighed and stood, then walked out of the clearing towards to the east. Shan noticed her pick some things from the bushes and trees, putting them into her mouth. She's got it so easy. Hunting is hard work. And eating raw meat isn't very fun either. he thought, watching her eat her morning meal of fruit. If he hadn't been so hungry that second day, Shan would never have even eaten that deer. Lucky for him, it had just been lying there.

The shingar broke away from Pally's side and wandered off. Choosing a bush, he crouched down slowly (the way he had seen house cats do when they hunted mice) and lay in wait. Any moment now, something would come through and he would pounce on it.

The red headed elfmaid watched Shan's dark figure disapear into the brush, knowing the cat wouldn't be far from her side. He never was, which was comforting to her for some reason.

You're losing it Pally she scolded herself You are a noble elf from a noble line of warriors. This cat is a guide for you journey, not a companion. A guide. No more. No less.

Sighing, Paladia absently tossed a half-finished fruit into the brush. The sudden rustle of leaves caused her to tense and reach for her bow. Realizing the sound came from her own action, Pally mentally lashed herself again.

What's wrong with you? Why are you so high strung all of  sudden? It's not as if a troll is about to ambush you she thought with a smirk, and continued walking through the dense forest.

The sun was finally making an appearance to begin the long day ahead. A tall form made its way through the masses of trees that filled the forest, barely making a sound as he picked his way across the forest floor. It had been several days since his last rest, fatigue finally setting in, but this did not hinder his senses.

He was finely aware to his surroundings though he knew little of where he was exactly. Silver eyes scanned the trees and brush for anything unusual, not that it would help much in an unfamiliar place. A long black cloak hid him from unwanted eyes, allowing hima simple privacy that was greatly needed. Though his hearing was not well attuned, his eyesight was keen, able to pick even the slightest movement or change in an area.

His hands remained close to his weapons at all times, ready for use at a moments notice. At times, he would hear something that would cause him to jump, unnerving him so that it took him sometime to regain his train of thought on the task ahead of him.

Not long ago he was taken from his home forest to a place unknown. Once he left, he could do little to find out where he was and where he had to go to return home. The longer he wandered the more he realized that home would be something that he would not see for sometime, so he set himself in trying to figure out where he was. He had yet to reach a town or a villiage or even an encampment of some sort to ask questions, this bothered him for it only made him all the more lost.

Paladia walked aimlessly to the east, her bow that was slung over her shoulder tapping against her hip as she walked. Subconciously, the red-haired elf touched the finely crafted long bow with her hand. It had been a gift from her mother, who had not excelled in the fighting arts, but her grandfather had. He had been an excellent Kaierian warrior, his weapon of choice being the long bow, just like Pally.

"A shame I never met you, Grandfather," Paladia murmured to herself.

It had been an hour since dawn, and the sun was streaming through the thick foliage in blades of light that stopped in pools of warmth on the damp forest floor. Paladia's footsteps set with the natural silence of a skilled elven warrior.

Pally had mellowed now, or at least as calm as a lone Kaierian warrior can become. The birds twittered around her, while the smaller animals in the forest went along with life, used to the presence of these elves around them. Some brush a few peds behind rustled and the elf was shaken from her peaceful walk.

Her bow was off her shoulder and notched in a heartbeat, Pally's trained hazel eyes scanning the area where the noise had come. Perhaps you are losing it she thought, lowering her bow slightly but not slacking on the taut string.

Slowly making his way along, trying to be as quiet as possible was not really working anymore. His cloak roughly brushed against some bushes making a deafing amount of noice for such a silence. He held his breath waiting to see if anything would jump out and attack him. He hated this feeling he always got, the edgy feeling that the worst is about to happen. It bugged the heck out of him.

"Calm down you big wuss. Nothing is going to happen. The forest is empty about you."

He took several deep breaths before continuing slowly and quietly through the trees. His hands slacking on his sword somewhat but his knuckles were still white beneath his cloak. His eyes darting from side to side, intensely wary of anything and everything, adding to the tension in his body.

Paladia's sharp eyes strained, trying to see through the dense forest as far as possible. Something moved up ahead. It was dark, a shadow. But not a natural shadow as cast from the towering trees that surrounded her.

The elf's brow furrowed. Somebody was here and she could see it better now. It's race or any kind of trait was still undistinguishable to her, but Pally pulled back on her notched arrow and raised her bow.

She let fly, aiming to miss, and Pally's sharp elven hearing could faintly hear the sound of the arrow strike a tree. "Stop now and no harm will come to you!" she cried out loudly in common tongue, though her elven accent was evident as she spoke.

Readying her bow once again, the red haired elfmaid began sifting through the thick forest with ease, toward this stranger in her forest which, as a training Kaierian warrior, was her duty to protect.

He watched as the arrow flew passed his head. A silent sigh left his lips and he continued to scan his surroundings, searching for the source of the arrow but found none from where he was standing.
"Stop now and no harm will come to you!" a female voice called.
He chuckled for he was not moving and secondly he figured that she couldn't see him yet, only his shadow.

"So much for remaining unnoticed."

He stood where he was at, waiting for the girl to make herself known, his hand still holding firmly onto his hilt, ready to draw if needed. He waited, hidden in the depths of his hood for the aggressor.

Shan lay in quiet wait in the brush. But his incredibly sharp hearing clearly heard Paladia's call. His head shot up, scaring away an approaching rabbit, and he started to walk towards the sound. I wonder who she's talking to. I've heard of people talking to themselves, but people dont scream stuff for no reason he thought irritably Stupid woman scared away my meal too...

The shingar saw Pally walking through the brush, her bow readied. The great black cat trotted up to walk beside her, noticing her start slightly at his sudden appearance. Following the elf's gaze through the underbrush, Shan instantly noticed a black cloaked figure standing just a few peds away. Whos this? Shan thought curiously, and moved through the brush easily to stand just three peds or so in front of the figure. He could see now the male elf clearly, and also noted his hand firmly gripping the hilt of his blade.

Completely oblivious, or ignorant, of any danger, Shan emerged from the thick underbrush to stand, all 300 ods of him, just a few paces from the man. The wild cat, a usually feared and respected hunter in the forest, stared up at him with unsettling blue eyes that held so much, maybe too much, intelligence.

He watched as a female elf stepped within his range of sight. He made no sudden movements, even his eyelids did not as much twitch. His lips curved up into a crooked smile, if it could be called as such. He said nothing, just watching and waiting.

"I see that I have been discovered, not that it makes any difference. "

A large black cat came up beside the elf and stared at him knowingly. Surprised, his lips straightened as he gazed at the creature, who slowly began to make its way toward him. Though its intentions seemed harmless, one could never be sure anymore.

"What is this shingar doing? Does it not know that approaching me or any other hunter is fatal?"

His hand clenched his hilt tighter, ready, in case the shingar pounced.

"What is it you want milady?" his voice soft and husky as he forced out the words.

Started by the cat, she watched it curiously as it approached the man. The cat was definatly an imposing figure, and she couldn't help but feel confident knowing it was there.

"What is it you want milady?" she heard him call.

Paladia stopped within clear veiw of the cloaked man, the bead of her arrow still marking him. "You walk further into the woods and thus further to our area of the woods. What is your business here?" the beautiful red-haired elf asked, her voice firm and confident.

Paladia was taught to let harmless strangers pass through the outer areas of the woods freely. But those actually coming towards the communities and central areas should be watched closely, if not confronted. In retrospect Pally thought disdainfully I probably should have let him be. But shaking her head with finality, the stubborn elf snapped her sharp hazel gaze back up to him.

"My business...that is none of your business. To tell you the truth, I am lost," he announced.

He didn't move, carefully watching the shingar in front of him out of the corner of his eye. Though he was hidden, from their gaze his voice had a hint of annoyance in it but he was really actually grateful of the appearance of the elf.

"Now I can finally get set on where I am exactly."

He watched and waited for a reply, mostly for the elf to lower her bow for he meant no harm in coming here, where ever here was. He just didn't trust the shingar, even if he was with the elf.

"To tell you the truth, I'm lost"

"I didn't mean to intrude upon your affairs" she said simply, walking through the forest. Lowering her bow, but not returning her arrow to her quiver, Paladia pushed through the brush to stand just a few feet from him, and could see now that he was an elf. Looking down at Shan the elf's lips twitched as she held back a smile. "So you've met my little friend here," she said and looked up at him, her face expressionless. "Where were you trying to go, sir? I've lived in these woods all my life, and I know it and immediate area well"

He released his hilt from his death grip,  but leaving his hand close by.

"I do not really know where I am going for I do not know where I am."

He eyed the cat again.

"Does he have a name?"

Paladia moved to stand next to the shingar that continued to watch the elf with cursious scrutiny. "Why, you are in the Auturian Woods, east of Marcogg. How is it that you've come here yet not know where you are?" she asked politely and brushed away some hair from her eyes and tucked it behind her ear.

Looking down at the cat, Pally shrugged. "If he has a name, he has yet to tell it to me" she said dryly "I simply call him Midnight Cat"

Shan let out a soft throaty growl. I hate that name he thought irritably Why can't she just call me Shan?. These two were beginning to bore him, and the cat had yet to eat this morning. The shingar took a few steps forward, looking up at Minsyth. The large wild cat circled the elf, his muscled body coming close to brushing against him.

With that, the jet cat trotted off into the forest, disappearing into the foliage and looking for food. Shan walked slowly and silently, dew from leaves brushing against his fur and making his coat glisten in the morning sun. Maybe now I can find some breakfast.

Through the shadows a distance away from all three figures a lurking elegant being danced amongst the shadows. This was her place, her comfort zone. It was a place that struck fear into the hearts and minds of many and yet it was the one place where this woman could fine shelter and love. She moved out of the shadows, slowly anticipating the reactions of the others. She wasn't afraid that they would believe her to be ugly. That was nearly impossible. This woman had smooth pale skin that reflected the moonlight, dark black hair with barely visible navy blue strands and a leaf placed decoratively in her hair. She was wrapped tightly in a black gown with torn edges that danced vibrantly in the winds. Her eyes were grey and held most beings in a cold daze. She had a dagger tucked into her belt and a small pouch filled with various poisons next to it. She stepped gently on the twigs and the such until she heard the growl of a feline. She stopped dead in her tracks and readied her magic. Her eyes darkened slightly and a snarl came upon her face. She could see perfectly in the dark, the Darkpriest had trained this ice elf well in the ways of shadowmancy. She looked behind her and found a tree and climbed up it, knowing that her steps might be heard by the feline. She judged the distance between herself and the feline and when she saw that it was far enough, she assured herself that she wouldn't be bothered and rested her head against that oak for a while.

He debated on whether he should tell this curious elf about what had happened to him. It would surely bring on questions that he did not feel like answering and then some. As he debated, the cat circled his form before leaving him with the female.

"It is a long story. Something that I do not feel like repeating at this point in time. The fact is that I am here and I here is unfamiliar to me."

He watched her expression. He was being difficult, he knew, but there was no other way other than telling her everything and she had no right to know any of that information. She did seem a little too curious for her own good.

Hopefully she will just direct me to a village or something where I could possibly get some good directions.

Earlier in the day Felina had cast Spectoral Sight as being in the forest this created a gentle feeling that seemed to follow her.   As she walked along she looked for various herbs she was needing, not urgently but if she saw them then she would pick them and place them in one of her pouches or her bag for later.   As she was walking along she espied large paw prints settled only shallowly in the soil, barely noticable, 'I wonder what this animal is? it looks like a hunting cat, But it doesnt seem to be in a hurry' Felina thought, puzzled by the fact that she could only see one.

She continued up the trail and to her suprise heard voices speaking and saw somethings aura off to oneside.   'It must be human whatever it is, but it seems to be darker for some reason.'

Fflewdur stumbled through the forest, tripping and holding his stomach and groaning. He was on his way through the forest and he hadn't eaten in a couple of days.

Just a little farther to the path. He thought, clenching his teeth against the pain of hunger that was now constant. There's bound to be some food around here!

He stumbled forward onto the path. I made it! I'm finally here! "Hullo!" Is that people I hear? That  was his last thought  before a pang of hunger shot through him and he passed out cold on the path.

Shan walked casually through the forest. His powerful nose sniffed curiously at things as he passed, one particular flower causing his nose to sting and Shan rubbed it irritably with one big paw.

As he walked, Shan came upon a strange sent on the ground at the base of a tree. It seemed out of place, but before Shan could ponder it further, the big cat's sensitive ears picked up a sound. "Hullo!" he heard and the shingar broke into a relaxed run towards the sound.

Breaking through brush, the huge cat nearly tripped over a collapsed dwarf. By the eyes of Seyella, what is he doing here!? he thought, staring down at him. Shan prodded the comatos figure with his nose and then an idea came to him. Shan extended his claws and admired them a bit in the sun. THIS ought to wake him up he mused, and then jabbed dwarf in the rear with a pearly white claw.

Paladia nodded coldly. "I respect your privacy, sir. May I at least know your name?" she asked. The elfmaid bowed, "I am Paladia Entonei and would be glad to give you direction to wherever it is you wish to go. I travel east to the mountains." she explained, rising from her bow. Her bandana had come loose, and Pally removed it and began retying it, brushing her hair back from her face.

A chill made Pally pause a moment. Shrugging it off, convincing herself that the unsettling feeling was simply her imagination, Pally pulled the knot in her late brother's bandana tight and turned back to Minsyth.

Fflewdur snapped awake in shock firstly because of a sharp pain a then from the sight of a wild cat, a shingar by the look of it, standing over him.

"Not this, not on top of everything else," he moaned aloud. He liked animals but this was just too much. I've got to try somehing to get out of this mess.

"Hey big guy, I'm gettin' up now." he said softly in a way that usaully relaxed creatures. There is something strange about this shingar, he thought with a very confused  look on his face. it almost looks as if it understands me.

Fflewdur slowly got up and stood uncertainly beside the cat. He knew that showing fear would just make the shingar more likely to attack. Still, those claws and teeth were very intimidating.

Shan would have laughed if he could. I'm beginning to see some advantages to having claws he thought I guess this is why Sheryl liked her manicures so much he mused, remembering one of his former girlfriends.

The shingar then realized that this dwarf wasn't in good shape and the last thing he wanted was to have somebody get hurt because he didn't help him. Fflewdur was pale and his face drawn with fatigue. Maybe he can get us through the mountains! Yes...the dwarves live up there. He looks awfully hungry and theres always something around here.

The large cat approached the dwarf and nudged him with his nose, then walked past him. In a few moments, Shan returned with an uprooted bush bearing some tasty looking nuts, and dropped the food at the dwarf's feet. Satisfied, the big shingar flopped into the grass and rolled onto his back, waiting for the dwarf to eat the fruit.

He returned her cold expression though tensing slightly at her request.

"I go by the name Minsyth. Is there anything else you would like to know?" he replied harshly.

He cringed after the words had left his mouth. For some reason, he didn't care how they sounded though. He was becoming bored of this conversation, if it could be called one.

"Where are you and the cat traveling? Perhaps I could join you on your trek..."

He regreted saying those words but it was a way for her to abandon the previous topic. He really needed to go home but the detour would be welcomed...a clearing of the head so to speak.

Giglar stepped out of the tree. In the distance she coud see a group of people, but she could hardly make up their appearance or their forms. They might have been trees. Well, the assassin didn't have time to sit around forever. She had to catch a caravan and she had better do it quick. She landed with a soft thud, and looked at the new faces around her. She smiled seeing a woman not too far in front of her, and the assassin put her hand over her dagger.

"What a beautiful forest," she said to the woman.

As she walked towards the group Felina was slightly surprised to see the form of a person hit the ground thier aura changing whilst they were halfway to the ground.   Felina as always curious about the ways of magic walked towards the newcomer to the clearing.

"Very impresive" She said smiling some 5 peds away from the person.  As thier back was to her she could not see thier expression, "What else can you do?". She slid her hand unobtrusivly into her belt pouch and waited for a resonse.

Fflewdur watched, frozen with fear, as the cat walked toward him. When the cat came near his hand went to his axe handle but he relaxed as the shingar nudged him very lightly and walked away. The dwarf nearly passed out again when the cat came back with food. It took a minute for the fact to sink in but when he came to his senses.....

FOOD!

"You are not a normal shingar are you?" he said while stuffing his face with food. He swallowed and his face broke out in a grin.

This is very wierd. One minute I'm passing out from hunger and the next minute there's a wild cat bringing me food!

He ate ravenously for a while and then looked at the cat who was sitting nearby.

"How will you suprise me next my feline friend?"

Shan let a snort escape his nose and rolled onto his back to move into a patch of sun. Watching the dwarf eat made the shingar both feel more hungry and at the same time, lose some of his apetite.

Then something perked his interest. A rustle from the bushes, too faint to be heard by the dwarf, made the cat tense. He didn't hear, or care, what Fflewdur was saying. With a flash of movement, the ebony cat rolled onto his feet and launched into the bushes. He came right on top of a rabbit, his deadly claws already having made the kill. I'm really getting good at this he thought smugly.

Shan stared down at the rabbit. He still couldn't get over the fact of eating raw meat. It was surprising satisfying and his stomach did handle it well, but the thought still made the shingar uneasy. But he was so hungry! So without a second thought, Shanvorin began eating the rabbit happily, not far from the dwarf.

Paladia held back a scowl and kept her face stoic and calm, just like she had been told to. The Tethinrhim preferred to keep an emotion inside, which is exactly what Pally did.

"We travel to the Mithril Mountains northeast of here. I am on a quest of my own, the cat is merely a companion" the elf replied coolly, keeping her pink lips pursed together.

Just then, Pally heard a woman's voice. Her head turned slowly to the left, a hand tightening on her bow. Her hazel eyes peered through the trees, trying to make out something the elfmaid thought she saw.

Giglar was startled by the voice that had spoke to her. She looked over at the woman and smiled. She was strange looking to Giglar. The shadowmancer had never seen a human woman so close up before. Her smile turned into a smirke and she glanced back into the forest behind her as she heard a loud rustling sound. She turned back towards the woman.

"You were talking to me?" asked the assassin, "What I can do is none of your business, why would you want to know?"

Minsyth turned in the direction of the sound, he hadn't meant to upset Paladia...actually, that was the last thing he wanted. He just seemed to have that affect on people and it bothered him that he couldn't seem to change it.

"Wait, do not set your arrow. Hold off for a moment." he whispered calmly, hoping to keep the peace.

He scanned the trees and his eyes fell upon something, a figure but he could not make out the details.

"Allow me." he announced softly before heading off into the trees, not allowing Paladia to protest.

She nodded curtly, but the elf did not loosen the grip on her bow.

Paladia had been trained expertly, to enhance her natural ability, to walk silently through the heavy brush of the forest. In addition, the woman was so used to the company of the deathly silent shingar. Hearing Minsyth sift through the bushes sounded like a wild boar charging through the trees.

Who is he to order me around? she thought to herself bitterly, her instincts telling her to notch her weapon. Pally then realized how rude it would be to disregard a perfectly sound request, but her hand still found its way to rest against her dagger hilt.

Felina looked at the woman as she answered, 'ah, an elf' she thought 'Its been a while since i've seen one of them.'
"I am speaking to you yes, the reason I asked was because I was interested, I am involved in magic myself" Felina repied softly, her eyes flicking to the bush, she tryed to focus in on whatever was in there but could only see a mix of auras.   'whats in there?' she thought wandering towards the bush.

"I only asked out of curiosity, I did not mean to offend you, after all, we women must stick together." Felina continued walking, still talking back to the elf.

Fflewdur looked at up the cat just in time to see it flying through the air and into the bushes. He was a little confused at first but he figured it out when the shingar emerged from the bushes with a rabbit. He was only slightly disgusted at the sight of the cat eating the animal but he had seen it before and he would probably see it again so he needed to get used to it.

Fflewdur sat back and relaxed. There was no where he needed to be. Perhaps I should head back to the low fores for a visit. Yes, I think I will. First though, I would like to find out more about this cat. It seems strangely tame.

"Where did you come from?"

I can't believe I'm talking to a cat!   That hunger must have gone to my head.

Shan yawned and tossed the rabbits remains into the brush with a strong thrust of his head.

"Where did you come from?"

The ebony shingar stood and moved behind the dwarf slowly and silently. The big cat pushed Fflewdur in the back to get him to walk forward.

I can't talk thought Shan as he walked into the forest, intending for the dwarf to follow him back to Paladia and Minsyth But that woman can. She can tell the dwarf what we're up to

Fflewdur flinched when the cat pushed on his back. He was getting used to the presence of the cat but when it touched him...

When the cat started walking ahead of the dwarf he realized it wanted him to follow.

"Why not? Its not as if I've got something more important to do."

He tagged along, jogging to catch up a little bit and then matching pace with the shingar.

I wonder where its taking me? Maybe its trying to answer to my question? Fflewdur shrugged. Who knows?

The shingar was happy to see that Fflewdur understood him. Maybe with this guy's help, we can go to those dwarf mountains, find the figurines, then I can get back to normal Shan thought to himself.

They came to the place where Paladia and Minsyth had been. But by now, the male elf had gone off into the bush. Oh well. He didn't seem especially interesting anyways the cat thought, not seeing him anywhere. The shingar stood just a ped or so behind Paladia who didn't seem to have noticed him yet.

The ebony wild cat snorted loudly to get her attention.

Pally heard something come up behind her, but recognized the quiet, gentle steps of the tame shingar cat. The snort from the animal confirmed her suspicions.

"Not now, Midnight Cat," she replied, keeping her eyes fixed on Minsyth as he moved through the trees. The beautiful young elfmaid turned finally after Shan let out another impatient snort and was quite surprised to see a dwarf.

Regaining her composure immediatly, Pally's hazel eyes looked at Fflewdur with intense scrutiny "Who are you?". The elf had never seen a dwarf up close before but then again, the woman never really wanted to. Her father had always said that elves were the superior race, being the first created and the fairest of all beings. Something about that had always seemed odd to Pally, but the elf would never question her father whom she tried so hard to please.

As he slipping through the brush, he noticed that the figure that both he and Paladia saw was now two figures, chatting between themselves. Silently he approached them, not bothering about whether they would pull a weapon on him suddenly.  He snuck up behind them and cleared his throat.

"Can I help you?" his hand resting on his hilt absently.

He noticed that one was an elf and the other was a human, by the height and the way the walked. Once again, he was glad that his face was hidden, one could not tell his race except for his tall form but many did not think about that at first.

What is she talking about, we women?, thought Giglar. She was knew to being greeted in such a way, most of the time she was feared or revered, but this woman seemed to know very little about Giglar. She was a highly skilled assassin and dark priest, she could bend the shadows to fit her will...she could become unseen, unheard, unstoppable. Well, not literally, but she was pretty powerful.

"You seem to be very busy woman. Where are you headed?" asked the assassin wondering if they were going the same route. Although Giglar didn't usually like company it would be good to have someone to talk to just in case.

"My name is Fflewdur and I met up with shingar in the forest. He led me to you." He bowed shallowly. Unlike most dwarfs he didn't mind elves. She probably hated dwarfs though. Oh well. He didn't really care.

"Its a pleasure to meet you. Perphaps you can answer some of my questions. First of all I would like to  know what you and this intelligent cat are doing in this forest. If it is personal I do not expect you to answer. It is just the fact that this shingar has started my curiosity itching ferocously. That brings me to my second question. How are you linked to this cat?

The beautiful young elfmaid sighed. Curious little fellow, isn't he? she thought. Casting a quick glance towards the direction of the two figures and Minsyth, and disapointed to see only figures in the trees, Paladia decided it would do no harm to answer.

"I am Paladia Entonei, daughter of Moristt' Entonei of the Tethinrhim elves. This entire forest is my home" she answered, having relaxed her bow grip slightly. "And the cat is a guide on my quest and we are simply travel companions. Now, if you are done with your interrigation, would you be so kind as to tell me what you're doing here?" she asked. Pally hadn't meant to sound cold or irritated, the woman just had so much on her mind right now. And now, just to add to her confusion, the red haired elf was beginning to doubt her father's reasoning. This dwarf didn't seem rude, greedy or even stupid.

Pally was about to say something but decided to keep her mouth shut. She could see now that this dwarf was far from being an immediate threat. The elf glanced towards the shingar that the dwarf had been so interested in. By now, Shan had lain down in the grass a little bit off from the two.

Paladia sighed and looked back towards where Minsyth had gone. Seeing nothing of particular interest, the elf leaned against a nearby tree, still keeping her bow in her hands, and looked at the dwarf.

"So Fflewdur, I wasn't aware that dwarves lived in the Rahz Dath. But then..." she said thoughtfully "...I never did learn much about you dwarves."

About to reply to the elf Felina was interupted by a newcomer. Apparantly he was a man by his voice and possibly a bandit by his pose. His had rested languidly on his sword.

"Didn't your mother tell you it was rude to sneak up on people?" She walked towards him and leaned on her  staff, she raised one hand and pointed it at him.

"And did she also tell you not to scare women?" Quickly she muttered an incantation and cast confusion at him. swiftly she turned to the Elf "can you fight?" Felina called.

Giglar smiled when Felina asked her if she could fight. "Of course I can fight, what do I look like?" she asked. She drew her armored fan, a delicate yet stealthful weapon that she learned how to use while with the Kasumarii. She walked up to the man with the fan still closed and with a slight flick of her hand it opened revealing its blades and cutting the man's face a tiny bit. It didn't make any deep wounds, only enough to warn him.

"Now go about your business or we will have to harm you further," she said closing the fan.

"If you wish to fight, by all means but I meant no harma and I am certainitly not after your money or other belongings."

Giglar felt a bit of shame. She felt bad for harming a man who obviously knew what he was talking about and he had manners at that. She felt disgraced, she had acted out of the fear of being attacked herself. She put her fan away and stood up straight.

"Well, I am sorry for attacking you as I did. I had no idea that you were not a bandit or a thief."

"If I may say something without being injured, walk straight ahead of you and you will meet up with another female elf and her cat."

Giglar looked ahead of her, and surely enough she could see the faint outlines of a figure. She couldn't see a cat and she didn't really like cats. She then heard a faint screech in the forest and she automaticaly knew who it was. Mh'rnn, her Nightbird, had been with Giglar for years and they had grown quite close. The bird landed on a branch just in front of Giglar and it cawed. The bird's feet were equipped with a light metal bracing to make them sharper. Giglar smiled and petted the bird, and then picked it up onto her shoulder. "This is Mh'rnn, my companion," she said to anyone who cared.

Shan had laid down in the grass and was listening in on the dwarf and the elf's conversation. He had always heard about dwarves and elves never really getting along. Shan never  understood why, and until now, didn't really care.

The shingar looked up at Paladia. Though she tried to look casual by leaning against a tree, he could tell she was uncomfortable. Then the wild cat turned his knowing gaze towards Fflewdur. Shan had never met a dwarf before, and they weren't much different any other race outside appearence. Just another soul inside a different kind of body he thought.

By now, the cat's sensitive ears could hear the sound of people talking off in the distance. It was then that Shan noticed that Minsyth was gone. MORE strangers? he thought irritably. He wanted to get this quest thing over with. And now it looks like the dwarf will be joining us too he thought with what could be a groan escaping his throat.

Paladia looked at the dwarf. He wanted to come along? she thought to herself. The elf examined the dwarf's battle axe with interest. She had noticed it before, and Pally had to admit, it was a pretty imposing weapon and she didn't doubt the man's ability to weild it.

With an inaudible sigh, Pally nodded "You may come along on our journey Fflewdur, but you will pull your own weight along the way".

Out of curiosity, Pally glanced over to where Minsyth and the two other figures stood now and appeared to be talking. She could not hear anything but the very faint buzz of conversation, but with the rising sun, could now see the three figures quite easily.

Minsyth smiled as the elf placed the bird on her shoulder. He was quite fond of animals but tried to be impartial of them for he has had some trouble with them in the past.

"Nice bird. How long have you had it?" he tried his best to sound truely interested for he was often mistaken with his tone of voice.

Giglarania looked over at the man, and she smiled. She couldn't even remembered exactly when she had met Mh'rnn. "I do not remember, but I know that it has been quite a long time. We have been through much together, eh Mh'rnn?"

The bird looked at Minsyth and had a faceless expression. It is rare for a bird to smile or frown anyhow, but Mh'rnn's eyes were just dark and seemingly lifeless. When Giglar asked the question it let out a simple "coo" like a dove. Giglar smiled and then looked down the path again. "I suppose that we should go and greet your friends Minsyth?"

(OOC ACK! System failure, failed to change me to the right  character!)

Ah, thought Urse cheerfully, the great outdoors.  It was true he was a city dweller at heart, but every now and then it was nice to be in a place where the recently dead were not about to leap out at you, begging for help.

He opened up his sombre black cloak to reveal a shockingly yellow shirt.  He scratched himself and wondered if he had long to go to his destination, wherever that was.

He missed his orphans, he thought, though he knew they were in good hands with Fiore  He wouldn't have left them, but for the dream.

The white lady of his childhood, all those years ago, had appeared to him and asked (she never ordered, he liked that) him to go to the forests by the mountains by the sea.  He had asked where was that, of course and she told him that he would know.  And he had.

The next morning he had told Fiore he was going away, and he didn't know why, but it seemed like Querprur's business.  No, he told her, he didn't know when he was back, but several bakers would no doubt help.  He gave her a list of those who owed.

So now, here he was, in some forest he didn't know the name of.

Oh well, he chuckled, time for a practice. He burst into a rousing verse of "The Maiden and the Ram".  Far too obscene to sing to the orphans, some taverns even, but here with no-one but squirrels to be offended he let rip, even making some of the lighter rhymes more risque than usual.

Paladia's grip loosened as Minsyth came through the brush with the two women. But she readied her grip again as she noticed a crimson streak along his cheek. And the elf pulled the bow taut as the dark elf came into veiw.

Sweet Seyella she thought. Paladia had always been told to be extra wary of the dark elves and had no love for them when she thought of all the horrid stories her older peers had told her. But Pally eased herself as the human woman drew her attention. Paladia had to admit, she had no love for humans, but this woman seemed innocent enough.

The warrior, still holding her set weapon, gave a bow to the two. "I see Minsyth has returned with some friends" Pally said, pointedly not looking at Giglar. "I am Paladia Entonei. Would I be able to learn the name of these?" she asked politely, if not forcebly.

Giglar merely smirked at Paladia's movements. She knew that a lot of people would be wary of her presence, and that was a powerful tool for the shadowmancer and she didn't plan on being kind either. She looked at Minsyth as he told the elven woman that Giglarania meant no harm. Giglar stared bluntly at the man and then moved her eyes to the woman's weapon.

"If I wished for you to know my name you would have already been told. But since I wish not to cause any further troubles than what your mind already plagues you with I will let you know that my name is Giglarania Syphrenor and I do not intend on being a friend nor do I intend on becoming a threat. Since I have relinquished my name to you I suppose that you will do the same?"

Urse stopped in his tracks and dived into a bush.  He could hear voices.   In the woods that could mean travellers or it could mean bandits.  Even being a priest might not be a protection, though he knew bandits to be more superstitious than ordinary people.

"What to do?" thought Urse, "Querprer will surely protect one of her own, but do they know that?"

He dithered in indecision, trying to make up his mind.

Title: Chapter 1 - To the Mountains
Post by: Sindayl on November 27, 2003, 01:53:22 PM
The Summoner. That was her duty; her position; her gift. She had a hard life, seeing many die and many more turn into summons right before her eyes. She feared getting close to people, although she loved life in all its bounties. The Eyelian woman stood a few pens away from the small group. Her kinnvi was at her side; Poe Lily; he had always been loyal to Sindayl since the time she found him after killing his mother. She found it ironic that she had to kill his mother just to bond with him.

The forest. It seemed to make the summoner a bit uneasy; she didn't like the way it smelled, neither did she like the way the trees seemed to loom above her endlessly. She liked being in control of her life and having a feeling of power, but since she was tied in with nature it didn't bother her too much. She made her way down the path, hoping that it wouldn't be too strange to see people passing through these parts. Sindayl was also cautious because of the elves that lived in these woods. She had heard stories of them disliking intruders, but Sindayl had a mission.

Her mission. She had to find a man in these parts. His name, she couldn't remember, but she had a letter from her tutor in Ximax that she had to deliver. She didn't know how he expected her to find this man, but the way he talked to her she knew it was serious. Sindayl looked at her arm as it brushed against the side of a rough tree. It scratched her old wound; the wound that Poe Lily's mother gave Sindayl when she was younger. It went from her left shoulder to her elbow and it was three claw marks. It had longed since healed, but every now and then it would make her ache.

Her scar. The scar was a reminder of all the pain she had been through. As a summoner she could bring forth the souls of the dead and lesser demons in forms of powerful beasts. It was a powerful ability, that most of the Ximaxian mages had trouble with. Sindayl didn't know why Ava' had gifted her in such a way, but that is just how it was. She could form links with the demons and unless she could overpower the will of the demon the link was broken and the demon would either retreat or it would turn on Sindayl and attack her.

Exilio. He was one case of such a demon. He was once a man; one of the Silver Hand; a group of sorcerers who tried to achieve immortality and failed. When Sindayl was in Shivering Woods with her aunt and her lover, she was attacked by bandits and she chose to summon anything. The thing that came up was Exilio and he wasn't too happy to be raised from the dead. He attacked Sindayl and company and then once finished he took control of Sindayl. Thinking back on this made the woman sad and upset; that day she had lost two of the people she loved the most. One died and became one of her summons and the other was never seen again.

Paladia kept her bow low and slacked her pull on it, but kept her grip on the weapon firm and her fingers always ready for action.

Pally looked to Giglar and, not wanting to appear rude, said "I am Paladia Entonei of the Tethinrhim Elves, occupants of this wood."

The red haired elf looked to Felina "And who might you be?" she asked, her fair face expressionless and set with a stoic calm. Paladia tried to keep her emotions as unevident on the surface as she possibly could.

Shan stirred on the forest floor, just a ped or so behind Paladia. The large shingar had dozed off and had been awoken by the voices, some he recognized, some he didnt.

The large ebony cat shifted then stood up with a stretch and long yawn, exposing rows of pearly white, dagger-like teeth. Shan looked at the two women and the reappearance of Minsyth. The cat, not fearing the two strangers, made his way past the Tethinrhim elf and padded around Felina first, sniffing some curious smelling pouches.

From there, the shingar drifted silently over to Giglar, examining the dark elf with his unnaturally intelligent sky blue eyes. The wild cat wouldn't say he was afraid of the woman, just curious of her intentions.

Just then, the sharp hearing of the cat picked up the faint sound that he doubted any of the others could have noticed. The cat, curious to see what other strange creatures were in the forest, trotted off in a arc, to come silently behind a man crouching in the bushes.

The intimidated cat came to stand just a ped or so behind him and issued a low, throaty growl. Unknown to the cat, though, a woman and her wolverine stood just within hearing range not far to the side.

Felina was interested in the motley group that she saw when she entered.   She was not, however, impressed by the Arrow pointing at her. 'She does have a point' Felina thought, 'But sadly its at the end of that arrow.'

"My name is Felina, I am as you have no doubt guessed a traveller and part time healer." Felina said to the elf as she lowered the bow, She hoped that the other elf and gentlemen wouldn't say anything untill later, hopefully the confusion she had cast at him would slow his thoughts for a while.

Felina was struck by the Cat walking around, 'Ah, that must be what I saw earlier.'

Urse head a small growl and looked in its direction.  Oh Querprer, he thought.

"Shoo!" he said quietly, "you'll have the bandits know I'm here!"

Urse had never had much to do with animals,  though he had once had to fend off the ghost of a pig outside an abattoir.  Fortunately, the Car'all had recalled the spirit before the screaming pig could be too much of a nuisance.

The woman had lowered the bow, which meant nothing at this distance.  He waved his hands nervously at the cat;

"Shoo!  Go on, please!"

Paladia watched as Shan slipped into the bushes. The elf assumed the shingar had simply gone off for a meal as she scanned the surrounding forest. But her sharp vision noticed a figure standing not too far away.

The elf, ignoring the others around her, moved forward to stand not far from Sindayl. Her readied bow in hand, Paladia asked the human woman with her usual emotionless and calm demeanor "Can I help you?" eyeing the woverine at her side with curiosity.

The Summoner turned her face to see an elf with auburn hair facing her. She looked down at Poe Lily and he growled a bit at the feline who he saw suddenly disappear. Sindayl looked back at the elf, and smiled. "No need for that weapon...both of us wish no harm. My name is Sindayl Borali, and I am a summoner from Ximax. I seek out a man named S-something. Shan was seriously beginning to enjoy his new body. What interesting reactions he could get from people! The cat ceased growling, but Shan made sure to keep just enough of his menacing teeth visible.

The shingar took a few quick strides forward and nudged Urse, non too gently, with his head. Shan continued prodding the man towards the rest of the group. It was becoming quite bothersome to have to deal with so many people in one day. We've wasted so much time already! the cat thought to itself as he continued to herd Urse towards the rest of the party.

"So what brings you to this neck of the woods?"

Not surprised by such a question, he merely chuckled from beneath his hood. "I am a wanderer of sorts but as much as some for I am returning home, at least I should hope so soon. I have know idea where home is from here but I shall manage. In the meantime, Paladia has captured my interest with the cat and her quest."

He saw from the corner of his eye, the cat returning. Nudging along yet another being from the hiding places of the brush. "Well, another recruit. You are sure doing well in aid for the...journey of sorts." He chuckled at his own response, knowing that it would most seemingly come out as arrogant, something he did not wish.

"Ximax? Oh yes, the magic school" she replied kindly. The elf had little to do with magic, aside from meetings with the Spiritual Guider, since her family was oriented mainly around the fighting arts. Something about this human woman made Paladia feel at ease. "If you please, you could join us for a short while" she said.

The auburn elf motioned for Sindayl to join the rest of the group, and to her surprise, Pally noticed yet another stranger standing with them as she returned with the others.

Paladia caught Urse's bizarre reply as she returned to the rest of the group. "What are you talking about? Bandits and such foolishness. Honestly, you shouldn't jump to assumptions, especially such stupid ones."

The proud elf, a bit annoyed by these unexpected delays in her important journey, looked around the strange group and nearly cried out in frustration.

Sighing, Pally looked to the sky. How time flies! It must have been nearly midday by now, the spring sun hanging high in the sky. "Well, we might as well be getting introductions over with" she said, casting a curious glance at Fflewdur who had already begun, "I am Paladia Entonei, of the Tethinrhim wood elves. Paladia sighed. The sharp hearing of the elven woman easily picked up the words spoken about her but it did not bother her. Pally couldn't care less of what anybody, save her superiors, thought of her.

Pally opened her mouth to explain her quest as briefly as possible, but before she could say anything, Shan lolled over onto his back so his front paws were turned upwards. The green gemstone embedded into the shingar's one paw pad reflected the afternoon sun brightly.

Flushing, Pally nudged the shingar to stand up with her foot. The Tethinrhim explained now as vaguely as she could, "Me and this shingar here are traveling to the Mithril Mountains to retrieve..." she paused, not knowing herself what they were looking for. Deciding to bluff it through, the proud elf continued "...something of importance. What I seek is none of your concern." she finished with finality, not wanting any to pursue the topic further.

"Now, if any of you are traveling with me I am going now. I've wasted enough time here" she said emotionlessly and began to walk to the east.

He yawned and rolled onto his back, the bright green gemstone flashing in the sun. Shan had forgotten about that and was already standing up as Pally nudged him.

"All right all right!" he thought. "She really needs to lighten up"

Pally began to walk, and Shan wondering who else of this strange group would follow. The shingar turned about and walked uneasily close to each of the people. Shan sighed and began to walk after Pally though he stopped and gave the strange group a look, as if to say well, arn't you coming? before walking slowly after Paladia.

Unable to stand it any longer, the ebony furred cat whirred to glare up at Urse with his intelligent blue eyes. Shut UP already! he thought angrilly just as Urse finished the tune. Why am I getting a bad feeling from this, now? The ebony cat continued walking until something caught his attention off to the side. A beautiful woman, an elf who looked like Pally, came unthreateningly from the forest. She spoke to Paladia in elvish that he could not understand then looked to rest of the group and spoke in accented common tongue.

"Leave us," she said coldly, looking over the strange mix of companions, "The elf comes with me."

Pally read over the riddle over and over again, trying to see if she could decifer any more of it. Frustrated and tired, the elf stuffed it back into a pocket and looked ahead.

Just then, a Tethinrhim elfmaid emerged from the forest and stopped Paladia in her tracks. Immediatly noticing the tattoos on the woman's arm which classified her as a Kaierian warrior, Paladia was unthreatened by her colleague.

The fellow warrior spoke to Pally in elvish, "Come, sister warrior," she said, "My patrol leader whishes to speak with you. We were not expecting you to be making your journey with so many....'friends'". Pally thought that the woman had said the word with what sounded like disapproval, but shook off the notion and followed her.

Not surprised that the ebony shingar followed, Paladia walked silently behind the Kaierian warrior until they came to a tree and stopped. Two figures dropped from the branches and two others came from hiding spots among the forest. One of the warriors from the trees came forth, a tall male who's stature and noble features made Pally beleive that he was the patrol captain.

Paladia bowed politely to her superior and stood, waiting for what he would say to her.

The patrol captain nodded his head in respect for Paladia and introduced himself, speaking elvish. "Welcome, young Paladia. I am Elrohir Telemnar , the captain of this patrol. Behind me stand Lady Aranel and Lolindir" he began, gesturing to the woman who had approached Paladia and a slightly younger looking man"

Paladia opened her mouth to speak but was interrupted by Elrohir, "Before I continue, I would like to assure you that this meeting is in no way meant to deter you from your training voyage."

Paladia was confused and asked, "How do you know all this? Did my father send you!? I knew he didn't trust me."

The two elves behind Elrohir exchanged curious glances. Lolindir came forth and spoke in a quiet voice, "I beg your pardon, Lady Entonei, but we were not sent by your father. We are patrolling this--"

But he was cut off by a sharp stare by Elrohir, "Quiet, tth" he scolded, then turned to Paladia. "Our patrol came upon your party and young Lolindir here," he said, and Pally couldn't help but notice him avert his eyes to the ground, "was sent back to inquire. Elrohir looked back to his two companions and they both nodded. The patrol captain ran a hand through his mane of gold-red hair then nodded to himself and looked at Pally, "Commendable of you, Paladia Entonei. Now it is time to ask. What of this cat?"

Pally held back a sigh, having known the question was coming. "I found him. I believe that this shingar is--"

"Excuse me," interrupted a stern faced Aranel, placing a hand on Elrohir's shoulder, "But the details of her warrior journey are not for our ears." Aranel turned to say something directly to Pally, but was cut off by Elrohir.

Shan lay silently and seemingly patiently at Paladia's side, but in reality, the shingar was anxious and uncomfortable. Not only could he not understand what the four elves were discussing, since he was far from understanding elvish, but the sharp sensed cat could sense something strange about him.

Finally, unsettled too much to stand it any longer, Shanvorin whirred his large head suddenly to catch a glimpse of a fleeting shadow in the woods. The shingar understood now. They dont trust her. They dont trust Pally he thought angrilly, now beginning to notice more silent shadows sifting through the trees.

The large wild cat insued a quiet growl, and Paladia breifly looked down at him, only to have her head snap up suddenly to stare at Elrohir.

Shan gave a deep shingar sigh and rested his head on his large paws, not understanding a word the two were saying. Or more so...what Elrohir was saying. He was talking sternly in elvish, sounding as if lecturing Paladia on something, and the young elfmaid could only stand as a stiff as a board and only giving a nod occasionally to her superior.

Finally, after what seemed to be hours to the wild cat, but in reality was only a few minutes, Paladia bowed low to the three warriors and walked stiffly from the clearing and back to the rest of the party.

Looking back, Shan couldn't help but feel angry as seven more Kaierian warrior emerged from the woods to stand by the stern faced Elrohir.

Felina listened to the song and smiled slightly at the innuendo and emphasis. She wasnt peturbed by the song having heard and seen much more in her younger years.

Felina smiled at the Gentlemen to her side, "I come from an Avvenorian village on the coast, you may have heard of us?  My father was a healer and he taught me all I know about herblore. My mother however left me a unique talent. The ability to use magic." She said the last bit slightly quieter in an almost conspiritorial whisper.

Felina was surprised by what Paladia said. She was more surprised by the warriors reaction.

"Gentlemen be calm, there is nothing to worry about."

Felina said out loud to the Dwarf and Warrior, slowly she recalled what her tutor had told her.  Slowly she closed her eyes and placed her hand into one of her many pouches and put a small amount of powder on them, the very lightest amount as she only wanted the magic to last for a few minutes.   After she had put the powder on she chanted and as the car'aal shifted her perceptions changed from the normal light to a gentle lavender. To one side she could see the warrior his body burning like a furnace, also the dwarfs only much closer to the ground.  Looking around she saw the singer and the other woman.  As she looked deeper into the woods she saw insects and other creatures body heat. Eventually she came across the body of a cat and then of three people, with her sight like this she could not see who it was however what was evident from thier body language and the location of the heat distribution that one was supirior and one was inferiour whilst the third was if not of an equal rank then was of a differant group.   Felina was fairly sure that the inferior was not Paladia however she wasn't going to stake any money on that bet.

"The Cat and Paladia are ok they are conversing with some people not too far away, If she wants us she will call and if she doesnt have time to call she will scream. However as she said to stay here I would recomend that course of action"  Felina said to her companions. Her eyes itched from the powder but that was the least price she could pay if one of her new companions thought she was a witch, not a mage healer.

"Someones coming back, but there are more people their?" The last part of Felinas sentance died on her lips was there to be an ambush or was there a problem, but, surely Paladia wasnt a renagade?

Elrohir's words repeated over and over in Paladia's mind like a mocking, teasing lecture. No she thought in denial as they returned to the party It's not how he says. It's not like that. It can't be She was so sunken in thought that Pally didn't notice the hidden warriors emerging from their forest cover.

The Tethinrhim was stiff and subdued when she and Shan returned to the group. "We keep going," she said flatly, and continued the original trail without another word. Though now, as she walked, her head was bowed instead of held up high with pride and dignity.

Shanvorin issued a low growl that seemed to emit from his body as a whole, but the simple wild cat went on after Paladia after looking back from where they came, his small ears up and alert.

Urse tramped on.  He was disturbed.  There was something niggling him.  Something the spellsmith had said.  He was only half listening has they half rested.

He had been worrying again about his orphans.  Still, he was confident in Querprur and knew if she wanted him here, she would be there to protect them, or if necessary, collect them in her arms. Though he hoped she would be patient and wait for them for a little while yet.

He stopped, suddenly.

"The Cat and Paladia are ok they are conversing with ....."
"The Cat and Paladia are ok they are conversing with ....."
"The Cat and Paladia are ok they are conversing with ....."

He hurried up to catch up with Felina.

He spoke quietly, but hurriedly,  ""The Cat and Paladia are ok they are conversing with...?  The cat can talk?  This is truly a wonder...  You did say....hmmm?"

Felina's words bothered him somewhat but he said nothing, resheathing his sword quickly. He just replaced his hood and fell in step behind Paladia, ignoring everyone else for the moment and retreating into his own thoughts. Felina's powers disturbed him somewhat, he wasn't comfortable with him though his sister had similar powers but they were different.

The thoughts caused him to retreat further into his thoughts. He pulled his hood back up to cover his features, ones that were set and hard as he thought back upon memories for no one else can know. His fingers absently ran over the hilt of his sword as his mind wandered as he walked.

The party walked in relative silence until the sun had drifted over head and was now about three quarters to the western horizon. Shan noticed how disturbed Pally was still, and how he wished he could understand what those other elves had said. But the shingar was also noticing a change in the forest. The trees, so grand and spectacular before, were becoming less and less impressive, though their towering forms never ceased to awe Shan.

Soon, the wild cat realized the reason for the thinning of the trees. The group came to the edge of the Auturian Woods, and before them lay the vast plains that seperated them from the mighty Mithril Mountains, their destination.

Shanvorin looked up at Pally, her face drawn with remorse. Why is she so distressed about leaving the forest? he thought to himself. The cat looked back at the party, and Giglar and Sindayl had stopped at the edge.

"I've had enough of this," Giglar said, "I have better things to do than hang out with you people." The dark elf's eyes drifted over to Paladia and she bowed, "Good luck, elf kin." And with that she walked back into the forest and seemed to meld in with the shadows themselves.

Shanvorin looked over to Sindayl. She glanced from person to person and then bowed. "Thank you, Miss Paladia. But here is where our paths must diverge." The woman turned and began walking along the border of the forest towards the north.

Paladia's face had remained cold and stoic throughout the two unexpected seperations. And the elfmaid had become especially stiff when Giglar had regarded to her as 'elf kin'.

"We continue," Paladia said flatly, and the Tethinrhim walked away towards the distant mountains.

Urse was disappointed when Felina chose to ignore him.  He shrugged and quickened his pace so that he was close to this cat.  A talking cat?  Perhaps he had misunderstand.  Perhaps it was a slip of the tongue?  He decided not to ask the others about it, lest they thought him puddled.

He looked at the cat again.   It did seem self possessed, but then, what cat didn't?  Perhaps he could teach it one of his songs.  It would like that, he imagined.

Still, stranger things existed, but not many.  He had not spoken to the too who had left, so he was quite calm about it.  He wished them well, though.  Singletons in the wilderness often faced dangers that would not approach groups.

Giglar had referred to Pally as her 'kin'. Kin! she thought, disgusted Never would I call a dark elf my kin. Just the thought of knowing that her and that woman shared blood in any way sent shivers up Pally's spine.

"We continue," she said flatly, turning her back the Auturian woods. For the first time in all her years, Paladia set foot on soil outside her beloved forest. She grown up there, been taught about the plants and animals that grew and lived within it. Rarely had she heard of or spoken of the world outside. Other elves had of course ventured the world away, but these were not in training to become Kaeirian warriors. They were average Tethinrhim, if such a thing existed.

Paladia kept walking toward the east but suddenly the ebony furred wild cat by her side stopped and the elf could feel the feline form tense. At first she moved to prod the cat along, but a sound, the same sound that had alerted Midnight Cat, reached her sensitive elven ears. A cry. Pally couldn't figure anything else of the noise she heard other than the fact that it was coming from where she planned to go.

The ranger considered for a moment detouring around the possible obstacle, it might waste time especially if the others wanted to investigate. But Paladia realized that this could be part of her intended journey, a test from the gods themselves!

Wanting to find out, the elf continued her course towards that faint cry, wondering what awaited her now. That distant feeling of adventurous yearning bubbled up from inside her for a moment, but Pally's subconcious pushed it down and forced the elf to concentrate on the task at hand.

Shan walked beside the leading elf, his thought wandering aimlessly. But just as he was daydreaming about life before the 'incident', a soft noise reached his powerful ears as if it were right beside him.

The wild cat could tell it was a female voice crying out, though that was all Shan could figure from the noise. His pace quickened with Pally beside him, and the shingar went over a small knoll. As he reached the top and looked over, he noticed a group of about half a dozen people in a group. On closer inspection, Shanvorin could make out six distinct figures shoving around a much smaller person.

"It's just some kid" he thought to himself "Having some kind of tussle"

The ebony feline moved to go around the group, but the little girl's sharp cry peirced the air and caused Shan to look at her once more. That last wail was anything but a mock cry of fear. It was honest terror.

Shan had never been known for being especially generous or empathetic. He didn't care for anybody but himself and only did things to help if he could use the deed as later leverage. And not much  had changed for the man-turned-cat.

Maybe her folks are wizards and can change me back. Or they might be rich," he thought as the shingar bounded towards the fight with Paladia in tow behind, "Or even better...maybe she has an older sister"

Title: rescue?
Post by: Brakken on January 22, 2004, 11:26:22 AM
Brakken walked along slowly, taking time to stop and look at anything that caught her attention. She always thought best when she was alone, and since she enjoyed thinking immensly, she coincidentally found herself on her own quite often. Today was no different.

She hummed to herself, trying to work out a tune for a song she had just penned lyrics for.

An hour passed, and she realized that she had wandered quite far from her caravan. She also remembered that her caravan was moving in the opposite direction that she had been, and with a few crude mathematical assumptions, Brakken knew that it would take her quite a long time to catch up. About to turn around and try some jogging, the young rover heard the sound of a small child crying out. She looked in the direction of the cry, and saw several men pushing a little girl around, not very far away.

Quickly, she realized that she had to do something, if only because helping someone else when they are in trouble seemed like an honorable and morally just thing to do.

"Hey! What's going on!" she called, as she approached. "Stop that!" Brakken stooped down as she moved towards the group and picked up a rock. Without thinking, she threw it at one of the men and hit him in the small of his back.

Hmmm... that might have been stupid of me, she thought, but she continued towards them, reaching for the virgin dagger at her side.

"Kailee, Kailoo."

The man Brakken had hit turned angrilly, rubbing his back from where the rock had hurt. The other five in the band turned their attention from a bruised and crying little girl to look at the new face. But suddenly, one of the men yelped and pointed over to a running shingar and an arming elf coming fast behind.

The jet cat bared his teeth threateningly and turned suddenly as he barreled towards the unarmed man who had alerted the others. The strong build of the feline collided hard with the man, sending the band leader back a ped or so to have him land hard in the soil.

Without a thought to the new woman standing not far away, Shan turned to the rest of the other party, all of them now bearing blades from short swords to dirks to daggers, the men obviously angered by the attack on their comrad.

Paladia, surprised when the shingar broke into a run toward the group, started running after herself. The elf took the bow off her back and had the weapon set in moments, not halfway to band of men. The Tethinrhim, seeing clearly that these were not her allies, let fly one arrow to have the missle dig deep into the dirt at the feet at one of the men.

He looked up, a long dagger in hand, as Pally smashed him in the face with the end of her bow. Blood from the man's broken nose splattered on the fine wood, causing a moment of disgust. Human blood..on her bow. Now, as she set another deadly arrow, Pally was mad.

Brakken was horrified as a large feline approached the group of men. She stopped dead in her tracks and stumbled over a rock. Lurching to the side to catch her balance, Brakken then noticed another figure running towards the ruffians. A female elf with a bow, no less.

Brakken winced as the elf smashed a man in the face with the bow, and could only stare for a few moments. What was going on? Who were all these people and where did they all come from?

A few seconds passed before Brakken realized that the group of men had turned their attention away from herself the little girl. She rushed forward and snatched the child's wrist, pulling her away from the fight.

He just stood off to the side and watched as Pally and the cat ran to help the woman fight off the men and get the child to safety. It wasn't until the men once again turned back the child did he feel that his presense was needed. He ran over to the woman and helped her get the child out from the center of the field. Making sure that they were alright, he returned to Pally and helped her and the cat fight off the men.

Pally raised her bow up and marked the bead straight between the eyes of the approaching man. His movements froze and the tip of his blade drooped slightly. Humans she thought with disgust, and the proud elf shot the arrow towards him, but angled the shot down so that it dug deep into the dirt at his feet.

The young man, who couldn't have been far out of his youth, gave a yelp and turned and fled. Paladia, just for good measure, sent another quickly set arrow towards him, pinning the dirt just in front of his feet. The man tripped and stumbled, but regained his feet and seemed to run double the speed.

The elf turned again, to see the shingar growling against a gingerly approaching warrior. But the man was certainly afraid of the large cat, 3 pygges of muscle and fur as dark as night. Pally knew that the midnight cat could handle itself, and the elf turned to face whatever new opponent that approached.

Shanvorin turned to see a man with a long dirk in hand aproaching the shingar cautiously. At first, Shan moved to flee but then he remembered just how imposing his new feline form could be.

The shingar arched his back and caused his black fur to go up on end, bearing his pearly white teeth and letting out a menacing growl. The scene gave the man pause, causing the tip of his dirk to dip towards the ground somewhat, but the stubborn soldier held his ground.

Though that soon changed as Shan took one step forward with his huge paws, which sent the man running and leaving his dirk behind.

Quite proud of himself, Shan turned to where the little girl and a new woman were standing. But the cat noticed a figure just behind them, a crossbow notched and aimed straight for the woman's back. Letting out a roar, Shan bounded towards her meaning to push the woman and child out of the way, but the crossbowman pulled the trigger and the missle whistled towards Brakken.

Kareesh had wandered for severald days straight. She only stopped for a few moments each night to regain strength and to eat. Her bright green eyes reflected the sun's bright rays as she looked up at the trees, barely noticing their beauty. Wearing a dark green cloak, her hood was down, revealing her jet black hair. Pointed ears were clearly seen as her hair was pulled back out of her face by some material tied together. ((OOC: Like a ponytail))

As she was walking along, she heard the screams of a young child. She didn't think about it much for she knew that children often played games in the woods. When it came a second time, she began to think more about it. Then, when she started to hear the pained cries of full-grown men, she turned towards where the sound was coming from. The trees soon receeded and she was standing in an open field. When she got the to the sight, she stayed inside the skirts of the foliage. The strange group of seemingly travelers with their large cat, had everything under control. She would just wait here and see if they noticed her.

Her eyes fell upon a small group of women off to the side of where a few were battling men, who she determined to be the attackers.

The crossbowmen fumbled with another missle to get it loaded, hoping that he could gain his bearings before this new screaming man came any closer. But he dropped the crossbow bolt into the dirt and the man with the staff was fast approaching. Groaning loudly, the man dropped his crossbow and turned to flee as Urse was quickly closing the gap.

Meanwhile, Paladia stopped for a moment to regard the situation. Only three of the bullies remained; one of them rather preocupied with the singer and the other having run off the moment Pally had made quick work of his friend.

The last was charging angrilly, his crude shortsword raised in the air, towards the male elf. Looking over at Minsyth, Pally held no doubt that her fellow elf could handle himself with the human easily.

The red haired elf, keeping her bow in hand, started to walk towards the shaken little girl and two women who had come to stand near her.

Before Brakken could dust herself off, before she could make sure the child was ok, she looked up and saw a crossbow aimed at her from not so far away. Standing stupidly, her mouth hanging open, her mind was able to form one word: "but..."

Suddenly she was out of harms way, but not by her own action. What had just happened? Where was she? What was she doing here anyway? Was she dead? And then a voice, a female voice.

"Are you ok?"

Brakken tried to look up into the face of her rescuer and could hardly make her eyes focus. She was overwhelmed and scared, causing her body to start shutting down. Her eyelids were heavy, and playing dead seemed like a good idea. But she forced her vision to clear. The woman  was not much older than Brakken herself, and Brakken realized that she was looking upon someone with her same heritage.

She trembled as she stood up, helping the girl to stand as well. "I... that is, milady, I seem to be alright... are you alright?" she asked, bending down to the little girl. She nodded her head but would not speak. Brakken looked up again at the woman. Then she realized that the red headed elf maid was approaching them. She blinked, suddenly her mind was void of everything except the sight of the crossbow aimed right at her, and her hands began to tremble, but she stayed standing, and clenched her jaw.

Brakken smiled feebly and nodded. This woman was powerful. Brakken could feel something, an aura, that surrounded her. She wondered to herself, since she had had little exposure to the world of magic.

A male elf who had been a part of the skirmish came over to them and asked if everyone was alright. Brakken nodded again, slowly, more to convince herself that she was ok than for any other reason.

She hoped that someone would explain at least in part what had just happened, but she sure wasn't going to ask about it. Without even thinking about it, she put a hand on the shoulder of the small girl. Just because this group had attacked the clan of men, didn't mean that they were "on her side"

But just as he was about to become a hero, the two seemed to vanish. Confused, Shanvorin would have stopped but the shingar felt a stinging pain in his right fore paw.

He let out a moan of pain and looked down at a crossbow bolt in his leg. Whimpering, Shan limped over to the collecting group where two new faces accompanied the child. The child wiped her eyes, and in the process managed to smear her runny nose across her cheek. "My d-daddy. He...they...left without me. I'm Nyari. Where's my daddy?" she replied haltingly, casting fearful glances around the group at all the adults, and her gaze constantly returning to the shingar. But unlike her looks to the group, when Nyari glanced at Shan she seemed to calm.

Pally could only sigh. She couldn't help this child. Why couldn't humans just learn to take care of themselves?

If I were being attacked by bandits, I would be lucky to have one person come to my rescue, but if this child always attracts such aid, she could master legions, she thought.

She took her hand off of Nyari's shoulder when the girl looked up at her with a scared look on her face. Apparently strangers were not her favorite. So Brakken let her hands fall to her sides, and fiddled with the cloth of her dress. Quietly, she examined the group around her. All ages, races, and genders seemed to be represented. This was going to be interesting. Listening carefully, so as not to miss a thing, she decided not to speak until she was addressed specifically.

Standing off to the side, watching the group intently. They all seemed to be worried about the child but other than that she was terrified, she seemed fine. His sword was resheathed and his hood replaced over his features, hiding him once again in the depths of the shadows of his cloak, his arms folded over his chest.

His eyes scanned the area about the group, keeping a sharp eye out for anything unusual. After a few moments, his eyes fell upon a lone figure on the edge of the forest. A frown spread across his features, his hand never leaving his hilt. Slowly, he made his way over to the lone figure noticing that it's hood was down, revealing their features. Long black hair and emerald green eyes shone as he approached. The figure was slight yet strong. "M'Lady!" He bowed his head, "May I help you?"

He glanced over his shoulder quickly at the group, seeing that yet another had seemingly come upon them...We lost some and yet we continue to gain. He turned back to face the lady before him, holding out his hand to her. "Come..."

Paladia had had enough of this. This child, this human child, was obviously too stupid to want help. Nyari, looked around the group once more, and then halted her gaze to stare directly at the shingar. Shan cocked his head to the side as she approached him and placed a small hand upon his huge wounded leg. "It's okay, big cat, it's only small."

The child, with sudden confidence around the strangers, stood and turned to the group. "My name is Nyari. My daddy was taking me to Nepris to see Uncle Dimitri. We were riding with some trading men. But....the bad men came and scared the horses. Now...n-now I'm alone."

The little girl, despite her bravery to speak to the group of strangers, began crying. "I saw them ride off, running away from the bad men. They left me here with the rest."

Not caring about the child's obvious distress, Paladia looked around, "Wait. There are more bandits? That mean's they'll be coming back. I have no desire to waste anymore time with those idiots." The red-haired elf looked down at Nyari, "Listen child. Where is Nepris?"

She sniffed and pointed in the general direction of the Mithril Mountains, "The rocks by the sea. Please don't leave me.."

Kareesh started at seeing a man come towards her. He was tall but other then that, she didn't know what he looked like for he kept his hood down.

"Come..." he said and held out his hand to her. With one glance, Kareesh saw that his hand was covered in several scars. Previous fights, she guessed.

She held out her own scarred hand and took his. "Fights cause terrible scars. Some physical, yet many mentally," she said quietly as he lead her to the rest of the group. Her other hand remain on her dagger.

Gently a smile tugged at the corner's of his mouth as she took the hand he had held out to her. "There is nothing to fear. Your hand does not need to remain on your dagger M'Lady." He spoke softly as not to startle her. "And yes they do...fights are horrible things but your heart does harden with the more you partake in." He knew she had seen his hands and he had seen hers. Mostly likely received in different ways but the blade never shows any mercy.

He led her to the group but left her for but a moment to go and address Paladia. He found her talking to the frightened little girl about the direction they needed to travel. "M'Lady, I have found yet another that has wandered to our assembly." He whispered softly in Pally's ear, motioning over to Kareesh. "What should I do with her?" His hand absently came to rest on the hilt of his sword, waiting for Pally's reply.

"What should I do with her?"

Paladia sighed and cast her cold stare over to the newest person. The elf then let her gaze drift over the rest of the grouping, of so many different kinds of people. But she didn't have time for this. Paladia wouldn't even be here with these people if the Midnight Cat hadn't been so eager in helping the child. And even then, now look at him, with his injured leg. "Leave her," the Tethinrhim said plainly, "Unless she wishes to come with us. We owe nothing to these people."

Looking once more at Nyari, Paladia noticed how the little girl had calmed considerably as she gently, no longer gingerly, stroked the raven fur of the wild cat.

"You," Pally started, bringing the girl's eyes up from Shan, "we cannot take you to Nepris. A child would...slow us down."

Nyari's face dropped and she simply said, "Oh..."

Turning her chin up proudly, Paladia turned to adress the rest of the gathering, "Me and the cat leave now for the mountains. The rest of you, do what you wish as I have no need of you."

Shan had to agree with Pally on her point. Dragging a whining, crying, annoying child along beside them would surely slow them. The big cat nudged her in the side with his big head and then began to stand. The pain in his paw had subsided considerably and Shan was confident he could walk well.

Nyari raised her small head to gaze longingly up at the sky. "Daddy will come back. His caravan will fight off those men with swords and dogs," she said, resting a hand on Shanvorin's side. The shingar turned slowly and could sense the hope in the child's heart. Swords and dogs? he thought with doubt. The poor kid. Bandit's around here are ruthless and.....

Shaking off the thought, Shanvorin walked slowly behind the eager to leave Paladia.

Kareesh gritted her teeth, grinding them slightly. The Elf could not have known her past, nor guess it. She shook with a silent rage at the other Elf as she felt her just push off the other people other then the dark cat.

"Who does she think she is, pushing people aside as if they were old rags," Kareesh thought. A slight went through her as she realized that, in her own past she had done such a thing.

She turned to the male Elf that had brought her to the group.

"Now what? It seems that your *friend* has abondaned you," she said softly yet powerfully. She sifted her weight from one foot to the other awaiting his answer

A sigh escaped his lips as he turned once again to face the woman that he had come upon. Pally was obviously unhappy with the incident with the child and allowed it to possible cloud her judgement. "My friend has not abandoned me, my dear lady, but you. You may come with me if you wish. I am but with her to find my way home, since I have no knowledge of where I am."

His eyes fell upon the little girl petting the cat. It seemed so precious. A smile crept across his hardened features. They couldn't leave the little one behind, he wouldn't allow it. "Are we taking the little girl?" His voice was once again heard in Pally's ear.

"Are we taking the little girl?"

Paladia stopped and turned, her cold gaze drifting from Minsyth to the child and back. He wants to bring her? He is an elf, I can be sure of that much, but he shows sympathy to these humans. What such tribe would allow this? she thought.

Paladia, far from the mood of argument, waved a dismissive hand towards him. "Do as you wish, Minsyth. But she is in your care. If the child lags behind...that is no trouble of mine," the elf snapped, turning once again to leave, "And I'll feed you both to the cat if your presence slows us down" she muttered over her shoulder, a joking tone in her voice not as evident as it should be.

"Are we taking the little girl?"

Urse pricked up his ears, he had thought it was obvious.  It worried and annoyed him that the question was being asked.

"No we leave her here.  Then we can place wagers on what gets her first, wolf, bear or snake.  Then one of us will be rich!  Of course we are taking her.  She shall be in my charge.  If we cannot find a home for her, then she can join my orphans, and have a big family back there."

He walked over to the young girl and ruffled her head gently before picking her up and placing her on his shoulder.  He glared at the elves as if daring them to disagree.

Kim looked at the group.
"I am with Urse a child so young should not be left on her own"
As kim looked at the child she felt her memories stir. She remembered feeling so alone and helpless. No one talking to her. No one loving her. Shaking her head she pushed the feelings away and covered herself in the cold heart she had created within.

His head snapped in the direction of the two humans, annoyance filling his stance and features. "I am sorry if my intentions were not clear but I had no thought of leaving the girl behind. I had full intentions of taking her with us under my care if no one offered."

Eyes watching the two closely then falling to the little girl, a smile spreading across his features as he remembered when his sister was just as young and helpless.

Kareesh gave an inward sigh. She had no desire to go back to her home. If anything could be helped about it, she wouldn't want to remember what had happened to her there.

"I shall come along, but only because I have nothing else to do," Kareesh said flatly. She pulled the dark green hood over her head, hiding her features within the darkness of the shadows. "If we are going to head on this little journey, then let us start. If we linger here much longer, then we will draw the people of whom you speak, and we will be fighting not only to save our lives but also the life of this little girl."

She set her hand on her dagger hilt waiting for others to make responses.

"She'll be safe with me!" said Urse firmly, thrusting out his staff with his free hand.

"Anyway, we should go.  We don't know if every bandit in that rabble went for them.  The ones that got away could be bringing others while we waste time.  Which way are we going?"

Paladia turned to glare at the others. "I don't care who is taking the child! We head for the Mithril Mountains, as I already said," she snapped, on the verge of insanity. These humans...always bickering and arguing.

Forcing herself to calm, Paladia continued with her usual stoic demeanor. "You may come with us, and I shall have no objections. But I will not slow down my own pace if any of you manage to slow us down," she said with finality. A few of the party members seemed hesitant, but with few other options, they decided it best to not be around when the rest of the bandits returned.

The Tethinrhim turned on her heels, Shan by her side, and began walking to the north east; to the mountains.

Brakken looked from the child to the rest of the party. They seem in capable hands she thought hesitantly. The woman didn't really like leaving the little girl behind, but Brakken really needed to return to her caravan.

"I...that is, I really should be going," the woman said. Nyari seemed reluctant to see Brakken go, but the child felt she could trust the cat and his friends to keep her safe.

"Goodbye," Nyari said cheerfully, then turned to go after Shan and the elf woman.

"Goodbye," Brakken said with a half-hearted wave, and then went on her way.

The rest of the party seemed to have no other choice, now that the shingar and his elven companion were already walking off with her girl in tow. And so left the party, to officially begin the long trek to the mountains, which cast a faint outline upon the very distant horizon on the clear early summer afternoon.

Shan looked back at the group, then forward at their target. And so it has begun he thought absently to himself.

~~~~
From the bend above, a tall thin figure watched the party leave. It's traveling cloak rustled in the faint summer breeze before the lithe person ducked away, back towards the forest.
It was not long until two more returned with the first. They shared a short conversation and then began a leisurely persuit, certain to keep well out of sight of the cat's group.
