Title: Magic question.
Post by: Shadow on May 14, 2013, 05:42:19 AM
Since I have a psyrepent from the Hands of Urtengor I should have the natural ability of telepathy, I'm just having one small problem, and that is that I have no idea about how telepathy is supposed to work in this world, since I can't find it in the magic section. It's got me wondering if it even is magic (I bet it is and I'm just unable to find it). Anyway, any help would be appreciated.

I'm no magic expert, but I would almost say that, based on the entry of psyrpents, it's sort of a natural magic ability, not something that they have to learn like most of the magic in Calereth. Also, because you are from the Hands of Urtengor, you have telekinesis. Again, I'm not sure if this would be more of a magic thing or a natural power thing.

Sorry, not much help, really. Hopefully someone who knows magic more than I can help you out more. :)

Quick question about magic. Magic Items are banned but you can play a character with sphere three capabilities with approval. And Sphere three has the ability to create enchanted weapons. Does this mean you can enchant weapons for yourself at sphere three and keep them?

You cannot create the enchanted items in your CD, or else you would be violating the restriction ban.  If you were allowed to create a sphere three character, then I suppose that during the course of roleplay, if a moderator were to allow it, you might get away with creating one.  However, this item would not be transferable to any other story that character might join later.  But, I would hope that a moderator would limit this strongly.  Would not happen in my stories.  But, I'm very anti magic, someone like Rayne , who has an extensive knowledge of the magic system, might be a bit more liberal. :

My personal opinion:

I believe with a very good concept and backstory, an enchanted item can be done from a CD history. It is all up to the CD mods, in my opinion. We have existing CDs with enchanted gear but the players were all trusted veterans with deep knowledge of the world. And, the items were limiting and served as much as a character weakness as they did a strength (i.e. Malexia has her Mists staff, one of Kalina's CDs has a magic cloak among a few others).

As Altario said, allowing any magic items in a story is the story mod's decision. A mod can either ban it or limit the potential power and influence it can have in the story.

I feel the ban should be reconsidered to admin/mod permission imo.

As for telepathy, it is not developed on the site and therefore not allowed, unfortunately. It would require much research into the race, lore, cultural background and approval from the Dev team.

Quite a few people have spoken thus far; my responses should of course be considered with theirs, with the understanding that I am not an administrator and really only one of many CD Mods who will assess a CD.

Apropos Enchanted Items: In my opinion, magical items that you enchant/create yourself are fine (within reason) to have--if you can explain them well enough. The hard part is that you must not only be able to detail exactly that the magic item does, but the exact process requierd to cause that enchantment, therefore requiring more than just a superficial knowledge of ounia and car'all. Anyone wishing to do this would need also be required to understand the proporties of meta-links, how they work, and how they create the desire enchanted effect. There's a lot of abstract logic that goes into such explanations--and a certain comfort with the magical system as it currently stands.

Keep in mind that the ability of enchantment is limited, too, by your chosen element. A fire mage couldn't create a staff or stone with earth effects.

Apropos Telepathy: The ability of an individual to either insert their thoughts into the mind of others or pulll out another's thoughts and read them requires a certain influence on a person's internal self. We know through our magic development thus far that affecting someone else's car'all is limited by their own will. Therefore, it stands to reason that telepathy would be curtailed by an unwilling mind. However, if you, theoretically, had someone who was willing to allow that mind bridge, if you will (and whose player could correspond with you over PMs to allow it to be played out), then I don't see why you couldn't make it happen.  :)
