Sundrown has past already, when the friends following a small path hear a noise not far away. First it mixes with the other sounds which are always present on a friendly summer day - the occasional tweeting of a courting bird, the humming of the insects, the swooshing of the leaves above them when they pass a grove - but with the time is gets louder and louder till the path finally opens in a meadow which lies next to a river. And there they see what has caused it: they are standing at the banks of a river.  They knew from the Ylfferhim, that they would eventually reach the snake river which flows through the vale, but they had expected a maybe fast streaming, but ordinary grey, green or even brown looking water. But the river shows none of this colours, but a pure white with only a few hints of a deep green in-between. It hurries frothing and seething over the rocks covering its bed and if the party listens carefully a dark  rumbling can be heard - caused by the giant boulders the force of the water moves along the ground.

Speaking is not possible, and so they move now along the broader path which is running along the river bank to the west. Not far away, maybe only a few strals, a gigantic wall out of rock is rising in the west. It seems, as there the path will find its end, for the wall looks so steep . From now on, the path winds along the river, but leads slightly up the hill, so that after a few strals the river is roaring about 30 peds below them - the path always running near the edge.

Swing is nervous, for she is not used such narrow and lofty trails where one wrong  step can cause death. But under the comforting feeling of Talia s feet  guiding her, she stays as calm as possible.

After an hour of riding, the adventures seem to have reached a height for the path runs now a bit away from the river on the same level - but only for a short time. When the trees get more sparse again, a clearing opens, which allows the view on the steep rock wall they have seen from afar - but there is as well a small valley carved in the wall and everybody can see which way the path will take - up in a zigzag , smaller than before, maybe sometimes only a a quarter of a ped broad, the slope falling directly down in the roaring water below - and then it vanishes in the mountain. And the entrance looks pretty small.

Ta'las is entranced by the vista as the group reaches the clearing far above the churning water.  He nods absently at Talia's suggestion that they rest, as he dismounts his Aj'nuvic.

"I have never met a brownie before, Shendar-sister.  Do you know, would they be smaller than our halfling friend?" he asks, nodding toward Kenrill.

As he awaits, Talia's answer, the Shendar peers around the small valley in awe.  "Blessed Seyella, this place is almost as beautiful as the Quallian."

Garrek follows the party a good distance past the fallen ogre, but stops before the noisy running stream, and sets up camp. He'll wait for them out here, as it would be nigh unto impossible to follow them. For several hours he sits, thinking, until quite suddenly his head raises, and he looks into the approaching darkness.

"Come on out; join me for a little supper. You've traveled a long way for this."

No response comes for several minutes, until eventually the red elf emerges from the trees, and slowly approaches the campfire. He doesn't sit, but looks down with contempt to Garrek. "You should be dead.

"Quite possibly, but I am not. I'll accept what fate has written, rather than what fool mortals have tried to write. But tell me, what made you think I was traveling with them?"

"I thought you had an affiliation with them by now. You walked among them freely in Aer'Ylfferhim."

Garrek lets out a laughing snort. "Short-lived. Now, they would destroy me at first sight."

"Ava bless them, then. 'Twould be a glorious sight."

Garrek brings his eyes up completely to look at the red elf. "Tell me, have you come to finish the job, or to mock me?"

"Either. Why? Are you anxious to die?"

"Actually, I thought if you held off a bit, I could offer you satisfaction."

"The only satisfaction for me now, Garrek, is slitting your throat!" The elf went down on his haunches and leaned toward Garrek to enforce the point.

"How much damage do you think that girl could have done to you?"

"Her? Damage? Surely you jest. You yourself said she wouldn't hurt a fly. Come now, what point are you trying to make?"

Garrek's face went stern. "Behind us, there is a dead ogre."

"And?"

"It died in their presence. But do not be misled; they do not have the strength to bring such a beast down. No, that was done by yet another ogre, who was there. If you look, you will see that it is as I have stated. They fought with it for some time, but failed in defeating it severely."

"You liar. You're not good at it, either. They most likely killed it, and were I to look, I should find steel and stone in its body. Considering which, I shall go look; and you shall remain here. If you are right, I will listen. If you are wrong, you will die. Now, do you swear you will remain here?"

"If you must go check first, don't even bother."

The red elf looks confused to Garrek, leaning back a bit. "They've gone up this road. Do you know what's up this road? It is the Vale, yes, the Vale wherein live Brownies. And should you enter, they would kill you on the spot. No, but I do not think they have entered yet, so that if you hurry, you will overtake them, and know for yourself in one glorious battle. Then rape and plunder as you please, and the spoils shall all belong to you."

Garrek's face relented into a light smile. "But no, go back to the ogre. I would like to see the final results."

He leans back and lets his eyes half-close as the little bit of confusion works on the red elf. His thought patterns are obvious, and Garrek enjoys following them with his own mind. The Brownies, that is correct. What if they're entering the Brownies' land? No way to follow then. But what about the ogre? What if they really did kill it? Then he'd be wrong. I have to go check. End results? What end results of seeing the ogre? Except knowing the truth, and returning to cut Garrek's spindly neck. But wait- he would like them? If it's an ambush? But up there could be an ambush just as easy-- but out of ogre country, so an ambush of smaller enemies.

Eventually, the red elf stands, and moves a little ways off. "Alright, I'll go hunt them. But if you're wrong...

"Then it shall be a glorious battle, and blood will fill this river before daybreak," Garrek says in a breathless hiss. The red elf's eyes brighten, and threatening Garrek once more, he leaves.

Again, Garrek leans against his tree, and looks up. "Go down in honor? The least I could expect of you would be him. I know you don't want to attack them, but if he were to go down, to never reach his destination but die on the trail of some curious accident..."

A voice hisses from the trees, "Then you'll let it all go? With no recounting whatsoever?"

"Shadow of the Winds, you shall be free forever."

This is followed only by a short rustling, and Garrek closes his eyes to rest.

Of course I have nothing against you personally, but I'm afraid I've told you more than is safe...

Capher, heard Talia ask for a rest. He pulled back on his reins and his horse stopped.  He looked back at his passenger. "Lady Eden, would you care to take my hand so I can help you off.  I am sure you would like a rest as well."

As they neared the Valley, Zdoth’s stomach felt twisted, he was nervous about these narrow roads, if someone were to ambush them they wouldn’t stand a chance.  The other animals were nervous as well, and this didn’t help Zdoth in the least.  When they finally got there Zdoth was exausted from his worrying, and leaned up against the tree.  Talia pointed out the entrance to the rest of the party, and Zdoth’s stomach turned upside-down.  There was no way he could go into that hole.  There had to be a way…

“Talia…we cannot bring the animals in there.  The Aj’s and the horses couldn’t fit. I will stay out here and tend to them while you take care of what you came here for.” Zdoth said, hoping they would let him stay so he wouldn’t have to go into that tunnel.

Eden sat nervously upon Capher's horse, clinging tight to him throughout the ride, too afraid to let go and fix her braids as she would have liked to do. A few times the dwarf attempted to talk to the old man, but she found herself drowned out by the roar of hooves and rushing water too often to carry on. Fortunately, as their environment changed, as did the cleric's mood.

The rushing waters and the breakneck cliffs warmed her heart and wet her eyes. So much like home! There had been a river like this near her home... the only difference was that it had been an underground wonder. And slightly smaller. But all the same, the violent, frothy waves eased into her spirit a sense of nostalgia that made her miss her family. Her eyes found themselves on the cliff face soon enough, admiring the cold, sturdy natural structure in all it's wonder. A wall fit for Urtengor Himself.

"Lady Eden, would you care to take my hand so I can help you off. I am sure you would like a rest as well."

Eden nodded tightly and took his hand, sliding off with a fwump and bashfully fixing her disheveled robes. Her legs ached something awful from the ride... a horse's girth may mean little to a long limbed human, but it was trecherous to a stout young dwarf. Nodding her gratitude to Capher, Eden quickly produced a few peices of string and hurridly tied back her hair and beard. That being out of the way, she took up her staff and wobbled towards to the rock face, gazing up at it's heights.

A content smile on her features and a pleasurable gleam her eye, Eden tapped at the stone with the oblong head of her staff, listening to the resounding knocks. She picked at the stone with her fingernail and smelt the soil.

"This is a great place indeed!" she said finally to the weary party, patting the stone.

As others begin to dismount so does Terra though her bearing seems heavy, not from exhaustion but from within, and those most attuned to her nature can see dispite her cool expression something is upsetting her. Expressing her feelings openly as she has gave her a taste of freedom she could not remember having, but brushing pain of her memories bought her back into her current state, and all of a sudden she feels trapped, not physically, but confined within herself. In her state of unrest Terra slips wordlessly to a comfortable spot and begins going over her gear.

Ta'las spends a few more moments enjoying the vista before readying himself for the night.  He grabs his blanket and is about to lay it out next to his Aj'nuvic, when he notices Terra's mood.  In the Quallian, he had seen Terra's spirit lift, and had thought perhaps that Capher's magic had cured her, but once again she seems despondent.

The Shendar rubs his chin, wondering what he might do to cheer her up.  Ta'las approaches Terra with a warm smile, and lays down his blanket next to her.

"I wonder, Lady Terra, what do you think we will find in the Vale of the Brownies?  I have never met a brownie before, but for the Leias to have sent us here, they must have great power."

Capher waited until Eden got down from his horse, looked away as she straightened her clothes, then watched her curiously as she felt the soil and rock that surrounded them.  He slowly got down off of the horse, took off his gear, unsaddled him, found his feeding bag, hooked it over the horses ears so he could eat, and then slowly brushed him.

He noticed Terra was not in such good spirits as before, she is probably tired, as we all are, he thought.  He finished with his horse and took the feeding bag away.  He took a line of rope and tied it between two rocks and then tied his horse to the line. There were no trees up here and if the horse wandered it could accidently fall down the gorge into the river far below. "I put a line up so we can tie our horses and your Aj's, Talia and Ta'las to it just in case they start wandering."

He paused.

"I think I will start a fire." He said as he began to build a fire pit with some small stones.  He found some dry grass and small twigs, and started the fire. "I do not know about any of you, but I am starved. Ken, Lady Eden, do you have any delicacies left upon you? He asked, bending down putting his hands upon the rock and magically heating them up until they were red hot. that will do just fine, unless someone brought wood along with them. I forgot to ask, since I did not bring any with me does not mean that someone else forgot. Capher shook his head. "I am getting old." He said to no one in particular.

"I wonder did anyone remember to bring some wood along?" He asked.

Capher.

OOC: Capher, there is wood around, see my introduction post. „When the trees get more sparse again, a clearing opens, which allows the view on the steep rock wall they have seen from afar ..“ maybe you change it to „wet“ wood instead of no wood - though after reading Teris post I would prefer „no wood“ :lol

@ all: Please post in present tense! (what we did since we started in the Herald)

Talia has demounted as well and sits now on a big stone and looks up to what seems to be the entrance of the Valley, a small opening in the mountain. „The Gate“, as it is called. Somehow she had imagined a real gate, but of course probably the whole gorge is meant with this name. A small path is leading up there, maybe half an hour to ride - or walk, till it vanishes in the hole.

Restlessly she jumps up and moves around between her friends. Ta‘las prepares his plankets for the night already and Capher initiates a fire without wood. She observes him a few minutes, but continues with her walking around. She doesn‘t want to stay in this place, so lovely it is, but moving on might mean to leave her animals back and that is something she doesn‘t wish to do.

Restively she turns to the group and announces:

„I can‘t sit still and eat or rest. I will go up this path to this hole and see, how far we can go and if it is suitable for our animals to come with us. Maybe this hole is bigger than it seems and maybe it is only a crevice which widens after some time. I‘m back in an hour or so. Injèrá should not set before two hours. „

And off she is, walking up the path towards the hole. It takes her longer than expected, maybe a three quarters of an hour, but that is due to the magnificent sight of the landscape as well. As the path winds up through the knee long grasses, the trees get few and fewer, even the small compact ones. Low shrubs takes their place which are flowering beautiful in a pink colour. They are growing like big „cushions“ and are covering nearly half oof the ground. Blue bell-like shaped flowers  fill the small gaps between the „cushions“. In the evening sun, the light is agreeable and gives the landscape a colour and depth which cannot be seen in the bright sun of sunblaze.

Finally the „hole“ is near and Talia discovers, that the path goes past it and only a small track is leading into it. Curious she follows the track to the opening, which is bigger than expected, maybe three peds, but quite narrow after a few steps. Moving on, she sees some light at the end of the constriction and only a few peds away from the entrance the tunnel opens to a cave which could easily harbour thirty persons and their animals.  On the  other side the cave is open towards the mountain. The ceiling at the opening only about two and a half peds high, but twenty peds wide, bending in a slight curve. Talia hurries over to this other opening, fearing that soon the last light will vanish. A marvellous sight on a part of the mountain displays before her, which was not visible from their resting place. And the path is there, but smaller than before, and it is not going up the mountain, but down into the valley again, soon not visible anymore between the shrubs, flowers and little trees. The cave would make a better place to stay at night, for there is no way to go on today, with lastflame nearing.

So she turns around and leaves the cave through the small entrance which lies towards their resting place. She pauses a moment and looks down the path which they have come today, up from the place where they met the noisy river the first time through the dense forest up to their present height. A moment long she thinks she has seen a movement far down, but she puts it aside and hurries down the path to talk to the others.

„Hey people, up there is a cave big enough for all of us to rest there, including our animals. Let us go up there and spend the night there, it is a much safer place than the one here. I feel unwell if we stay here. AND, the path continues, maybe we can take our riding beasts with us!„

Eden wipes down her hands and admires the area for a short while still until finally joining Capher by the fire he has conjured up.

"I do not know about any of you, but I am starved. Ken, Lady Eden, do you have any delicacies left upon you?"

She looks up at him and nods briskly, hopping up and bounding to her back. Dragging it along the dirt to where she had been sitting, Eden cracks it open and begins rummaging around the contents. A seemingly endless supply of herbs, spices and other minor ingredients spill out, but the only true morsel is a loaf of fresh golden bread she had purchased from the inn the dwarf had been staying in. "I'm afraid I hadn't been planning any preperations for others beyond myself... my apologies. If there is meat, fish... fruit even, about, then I could be of more service, perhaps." Embarassed by her inability to provide, the blushing dwarf packs away the tiny jars and bags back into her bag, sitting quietly with the loaf in her lap.

It is then that the woman they all call Lady Talia returns and speaks of a new rest site. Eden stands and tucks the bread under her elbow, looking about and finally to Capher. "If we'll be going, perhaps I had better walk this round now. I do not reckon it is so far that I could not keep up this time." The dwarf sniffs her nose discreetly and bows, not eager to reveal to the curious old man that her stomach has yet to settle from the first ride.

'Teri has spent far longer than is needed on her mount, after dismounting - brushing, cleaning its hooves, and petting it, saying nothing and interacting little with the group. Ken's happy mood hasn't broken the entire time, and while she tries not to be an opposite, she finds herself smiling very rarely now.

Finally finding no excuse to busy herself with the horse, 'Teri turns about and sits down, silently looking over the scenery and the group, until Talia mentions something about a better place further on. She gives a little sigh, although the thought almost brings a smile to her face. At least Talia scouted ahead, whereas she herself should have. After all, she is an elf, and by nature more at home in less "civilized" environments. But she is satisfied that Talia has done it, and now she places the saddle back onto her horse, only tightening the belly strap, as the whole thing will be coming back off soon, if she understands correctly, and begins to lead the animal toward the sound of Talia's voice.

Terra sits abscently sharpening her remaining Twin for moment before turning her cool expression to Ta'las, and speaking in a cool level tone that does not betray her inner feelings.

"I know nothing of this place or these lands. All I truly remember is the Kar'ii island of Guldor. All I know about brownies is that they are small and Capher turned into one once."

Though Ta'las would not notice is that Terra still feels trapped in herself, she wants to cry out that she hurts but her defences, her "Masks" as Capher calls them keep her from doing so. A realization came to her in that moment, if she made her mind a prison, perhaps even the terrible nature of her locked away memories is mearly a figment as well.

Terra closes her eyes, and begins meditating, turning her minds eye inward, into herself, then she does something she never did before. She very conciously approaches the darkend lands of the landscape of her mind, her pure white dress flowing with her. Try as she might she can't bring herself to step over the threshold of shadow, fear prevents her from taking the step and one hand lays on the Moon Blade within her mind, her body in reality shows no sign of what is going within till she reaches out and touches the darkness that clouds her past.

The moment she touches the darkness within her mind, the eyes of her body fill with tears, she slumps over and begins to sob. Within her mind, feeling her bodies reaction, Terra ponders the prison she created for herself. Is this the only way she will be able to express her pain to others? The answer seems clear, to escape her prison she must face the pain of her past. Terra turns herself outward in the grips of her pasts pain, and a defiant though pained expression forms on her face.

Talia hurries towards Swing who is fretfully stamping with her feet, because Talia hasn‘t removed her luggage as the other man has done with his aj‘nuvic. On top, the green leaves around and the grass, so plentiful as it grows, is not to her liking. Talia caresses her, talking in a soft voice with her to calm her down.

“Calm down, sweetheart, if the others agree, we will go up the hill for a short time and there is a dry place, where no rain will surprise us, promise! at least it will not touch us.“

While patting and fondling the soft fur on swings head, talia looks around to look, if her friends and the two new members of the group agree to her proposal. Eden, the dwarf (Talia still has to resist the urge to stare too obvious in her direction) seems to be ready to go, but by foot and Teri leads her horse towards the path. But Terra sits there, as if she hasn‘t heard at all what she had said, maybe she even hasn‘t seen her going away. To Talia‘s surprise and concern, her face doesn‘t show the calm expression which doesn‘t show any emotions like most of the time, but a defiant and pained expression. This is so disturbing, that Talia stops palming her animal,  her hand covering her open mouth for a short moment. She drops the brush she has had taken a moment before and hurries over to Terra, knees in front of her, touching her knees softly and says with a low voice to her:

“Terra, come back wherever you are. We are here, you are not alone. “

And very carefully and and softly Talia puts one of her hands to Terra‘s cheek to easy her painful expression.

Ta'las' eyes widen as Terra begins to sob.  Blessed Seyella, look at what I have done! he thinks to himself.  Fortunately, Talia comes to Terra's aid, so Ta'las eases himself away.  "I am sorry, Lady Terra," he mumbles.

He looks apologetically at the others in the group, and then joins Capher.  "My friend, I am sorry," he whispers.  "I had thought to cheer up Lady Terra, but I have made things worse."  Ta'las looks on anxiously as Talia speaks to Terra, hoping that his Shendar-sister is able to repair the damage he has caused.
