Character Portrait: http://img182.imageshack.us/img182/2669/db7574xh7.jpg

Overview:
While she was growing up, Fen lived 10 years with the Ylfferhim, then 10 years with the Eyelian people. She was not satisfied with either of the lifestyles, so she joined the Black Butterfly Rovers, and has been with them ever since.

Physical Appearance and Clothes:
Fen has a diamond-shaped face, with expressive, arched brows, a pointed nose and full lips. But her most fascinating features are her eyes. One is of the darkest black, and the other is a radiant, emerald green. She is not sure if any other members of her family have eyes like hers, but she is nevertheless proud of them, and says they make her more unique. Her eyes are always dancing, and often have a mischievous glint in them, though sometimes the glint gives way to a thoughtful, day dreamy look.

Being half human and half elf, Fen's ears look as pointed as a normal elf's from a distance, but close up, people will see that there is a rounded edge to the point. Her dark brown hair, her body and her black eye she got from her Eyelian mother, as well as her strength. Her other green eye, her arched brows, her pointed nose, the shape of her face and her melodious voice was from her Ylfferhim father. She does occasionally like to decorate her hair and face with temporary tattoos or feathers.

Fen’s body is very fit and healthy, due to her exercise as a dancer and her healthy diet, and partly due to her roaming lifestyle with the Black Butterflies. Her glossy dark brown hair is often tied up in a ponytail using sparkly blue beads, to keep it out of they way while she is doing gymnastics or collecting herbs, and she has lightly tanned skin.

Fen does not wear as much jewelry as some of her fellow Rovers, but she does sometimes glue small gemstones above her left eyebrow, and she always wears a hoop earring in each ear. Her Black Butterfly tattoo is clearly visible on the back of her right hand; she wanted people to know that she was not ashamed of being a Butterfly. She has another tattoo of a blue serpent twined up her left arm.

Most people’s first impression of Fen is a shy, quiet young woman who looks as though she would rather die than talk to them. However, as soon as someone talks about something of her interest, Fen would suddenly open up and chatter almost non-stop. Her friends often joke that there isn’t a person in the whole of Santharia who talks as much as she does sometimes. People find it hard not to like her with her easy smile.

Fen is usually seen in tight black pants and a clean white shirt with a bit which is supposed to be tied round the neck, and wears this attire when performing as well. She prefers to go barefoot most of the time, but she is fine with wearing shoes as well. She also wears a lime green cloak with swirly black patterns towards the bottom. During hot days, she has her cloak wrapped around her waist, and her sleeves rolled up.

Personality:
When Fen feels happy, her mood is contagious, and even the grumpiest of people can’t help smiling and laughing along. She is very patient, and willing to laugh at herself, and one would have to try hard to anger her. When she does get angry, her face and eyes would go absolutely blank and expressionless. Then she would hide away for hours in a deserted spot before coming back again. By the time she comes back, however, she is cheerful again, and acts as if nothing had happened.

Fen has a very vivid imagination, and she can often be seen wandering around, with a far away, day dreamy look in her eyes, and up to this day no one really knows what she dreams up. She is quite unpredictable; she could decide to gather herbs, then, in a blink of an eye, decide to go dancing instead. If the saying that ‘you know what someone is about to do if you look at their eyes’ is true, Fen makes decisions so quickly that no one would have the time to read it in her eyes.

Fen is an extremely disorganized person, and a skiver; when she was a child, she would always delay doing household chores and doing school work for as long as she could. She would always conveniently forget to bring one thing or another along with her, and it is for this reason that she chooses to bring as few possessions as possible with her, to avoid losing something which might be of value. She is passionate about her dancing, and does not do it entirely for the money. She loves to entertain people by making them laugh, or cause them to stare in amazement as she does a series of impressive gymnastic-style moves. She likes to dance over to her destination, if it is not too far away.

Fen enjoys exploring, and as she travels with the Black Butterflies from place to place, she is fascinated by the different types of flowers and plants there. Although she loves plants, she rarely grows them, partly because it would be a nuisance to take care of and move around, and partly because it would probably die anyway, from all the traveling. So she just crushes the herbs when she picks them, and carries them in little packets. Wherever she is, she always manages to find suitable herbs to pick.

She loves animals as well, and never hesitates to take an injured animal in to care for it until it is healed again. However, by the time the animal is healed, it would usually want to stay with her; so over time, Fen acquired many ‘animal friends’, as she likes to call them, and they often follow her around. The animals conveniently care for themselves.

Fen often plays pranks on her friends. Every now and then, one of her friends would be soaking wet from a bucket of water over her head, or another would scream because a large spider would suddenly scuttle across her arm. Sometimes Fen goes too far with her mischief making, and she would have to apologize profusely to the victim of her pranks, but she can usually charm her way out of trouble. Because she has to move quietly if she wants to come up behind one of her unsuspecting friends, she has gained the ability to move stealthily and out of sight. She sometimes uses her weapons for her more dangerous pranks, so she has become skilled at using them, although she does practice with them every day, and does not use them for her pranks alone.

Strengths:
--Her patience, easy smile and willingness to make a fool out of herself help her to make friends easily.
--Her dancing keeps her fit and healthy.
--Her knowledge of herbs and how to heal injuries helps to keep her healthy as well.
--Her love of entertaining and performing makes her many friends.
--Her animal friends can sense if she is in danger, and will help to protect her.
--She stands a chance of managing to avoid enemies because she can move silently.
--Her skill with her Zarathian dagger and her R’unorian Commoners dagger has saved her life more than once.

Weaknesses:
--She chatters so much that she sometimes she gives away something which was not meant to be heard, which could prove fatal if the secret was very important.
--She is disorganized, and if one day she is asked to treasure an important item, there is a high chance that she will lose it.
--If she needs to work hard for something other than healing, dancing and practicing with her weapons, she will put it off for as long as possible.
--Her love of pranks means that sometimes she goes too far.
--Her love of exploring could put her in danger.
--She takes many risks, and one day she could be caught.
--She is willing to put herself in danger for her animals.

History:
One spring morning, Fen’s mother, Brook of the Bear clan, was taking a stroll through the Quallian forest, when a male Pard appeared only a few dashes away from her. Behind the Pard were two cubs and his mate, watching their father hiss at Brook. The Pard was no doubt only trying to protect them, but at that moment, Brook was too terrified to think properly.

The Pard chased Brook through the Quallian forest. Unfortunately, she had deliberately gone to a deserted part of the forest for a quiet stroll, so no one was there to help her. Luckily, the Pard decided not to hurt her, even though he could have easily done so, and indeed, it would have been expected of his ferocious nature. However, once Brook was a good distance away from the cubs and their mother, who had not taken part in the wild chase, he abandoned her and went back to his family.

Brook sank to the ground; strong and fit as she was, she was still worn out from running, and too relieved to do anything other than lie against a tree, thinking about how close she had been to losing her life. It was only when she had regained her strength, that she realized she was lost. She vainly tried to find a part of the forest she knew, cursing the Pardurin the whole way through. She walked for hours, and in the end she gave in to exhaustion, and the world went black for her as she collapsed.

Many hours later, Brook woke up in a warm, soft bed. She instantly recalled the Pardurin and vaguely remembered collapsing. What was she doing here? She sat up, alarmed. Then she saw an elf walking towards her. He wore a look of genuine concern on his face. Even so, she eyed him warily, shrinking back a little. He started to speak to her in Thalian, and she recognized the characteristic melodious accent of the Ylfferhim in his voice. She learnt that his name was Feredir and he meant her no harm; he had been taking a quiet walk as well, had found her lying unconscious on the ground and brought her back to his home.

Brook stayed with the Ylfferhim for a few days. During that space of time, she and Feredir grew extremely close, and they soon developed feelings for each other. When Brook returned home, she convinced her family to let her marry Feredir and move in with the Ylfferhim permanently. Soon after their marriage, Brook gave birth to a little girl, whom they named Fenmarel.

Fen’s parents wanted her to experience the life of both the Ylfferhim and the Eyelians, and later have a choice between the two tribes of where she wanted to live. So Fen spent the first ten years of her life with the Ylfferhim, and the next ten years she spent with her Eyelian aunt and uncle. By her twentieth birthday, Fen knew fluent Ylffer and Eyelian, she could sing extraordinarily well, and she learned the basics on how to tame some animals and to roughly know what they are trying to say. Her knowledge of herbs and healing she learned from both tribes.

All too soon, the day came when Fen had to decide where she wanted to call home, and which tribe to live in. Fen had a difficult decision to make, and so she did what she always did when she had to choose between two things; she chose neither. She had heard of the Black Butterfly Rovers, and at the time when she was still undecided about what to do, she heard that they were only camping a few strals away. She had always wanted to travel and experience new things, and she rather fancied the life of a rover, although she was quite aware of the consequences of that choice; being shunned and thought of as vermin and witches. However, she knew that the Black Butterflies did have their fun.

So Fen rode over to the Black Butterflies to ask if she could join them, without telling any of her family, since she knew they would not approve. They easily accepted her, and welcomed her into the group. But Fen’s delight was short lived; she had to face her family, and tell them the news.

But when she came home and rather reluctantly told them of her decision and why she chose it, they took it much better than she had expected. They were sad, and would still prefer her not to join the Black Butterflies, but they believed in letting people make their own choices, including their offspring. With a slightly teary goodbye, Fen left her family and started her life as a Butterfly.

Fen found it very easy to make new friends. Soon, it was not an uncommon sight to see her partying with a large group of Black Butterflies. She did not need to learn to move stealthily, and she was a natural entertainer. Her love for dancing and performing increased as time went by. She became one of the most experienced people in dancing and healing, and many would gather to marvel at her dancing, or request her advice if they were ill. At first, Fen was slightly uncomfortable with the tales of woe and sorrow told by her friends, but she gradually grew used to it. She also learned to block out the insults from people who considered her a bad person.

A few months after joining the Black Butterflies, she found, to her horror and dismay, a very young female Zeiphyrian Hunting Hound lying in the dirt by a roadside, and dangerously close to death. It was shockingly thin, with its ribcage clearly visible through its matted fur. Fen did not hesitate to take it in and nurse it back to health with her knowledge of healing. She did not dare to think of what might have happened to get the dog into this state. Once the dog was completely recovered, she tried to let it go free, but it refused, and insisted on staying with her. So Fen named the dog Tari, and let her follow her wherever she went. That was the start of Fen’s ‘collection’ of animals, and it is still growing.

Fen is still traveling with the Black Butterflies, and she swears that she will never leave them. She is completely satisfied with her life and lives it to the fullest.

Weapons:
Fen has a Zarathian dagger and a R’unorian Commoners dagger, both of which she bought herself. She favors daggers above all other weapons, and her reason for this is that daggers can be easily concealed. When people argue that daggers are not the only weapons which can be hidden, she would reply that daggers are more suited for her, and would not offer any other explanation. She treats her daggers as if they were precious stones, carefully cleaning them at least once a week.

Belongings:
Fen's belongings consist of her daggers, clothes, jewelry, her packets of herbs, her little collection of pranks, money and nothing else. If a stranger were to come across Fen, she would appear to have no possessions whatsoever. She has a considerably less amount of belongings than most of the other Butterfly Rovers.

Familiars:
If all Fen's animal friends were to be considered her familiars, she would have too many to name each one individually. However, there is one animal which stands out from the rest, and is closer to Fen than any of the others. That animal is a female Zeiphyrian Hunting Hound who goes by the name of Tari.

Tari, like most Zeiphyrian Hunting Hounds, is of powerful build, and looks like a glossier, shorter and stockier version of the Eophyrhim Hunting Hounds. Tari has a snow white belly, but the rest of her is completely black. She is very affectionate with Fen, but wary of all other people. Often you will find Tari on Fen's lap, observing the world around her. Sometimes Fen will use her to deliver messages.

Tari is the most sensitive to Fen's emotions. She is always on the alert for enemies, and always sleeps with Fen in her bed at night, with one ear cocked, listening for suspicious noises. Tari never leaves Fen's side, and follows her around everywhere, although she does go off for short periods to hunt for food for herself; Fen is determined not to let Tari forget the wolf-like skills and instincts of the Hunting Hounds.

Hello, Fenmarel!

Your character is looking very interesting already! One thing I noticed: you say: who looks as though she would die than talk to them. You forgot the 'rather' in that sentence ;)

Apart from that, 32 is very young for a half-elf. If you look at the elven age calculator, you will find that a human + Ylfferhim give this: 50% Race (Human), 50% Ylfferhim, and will live a maximum of 315 years. So you see why it is very young, so I'd say she's still growing up.

How much does she look like an eyelian and how much like an elf? For example, does she have pointy ears, or round, or half-pointy? (more pointy than a human's but less than an elf's). Does her 'fit and healthy' body come only from her lifestyle or does her elven heritage have anything to do with it? And so on.

You say that she weighs 2 pygges. That's 100 kilo's. In combination with 1.6 peds, that's not 'fit and healthy', that's fat ;) You can use the Santharian Measures converter to calculate how much you want to weigh. Both the Age calculator and Measures calculator can be found to the left, in the list that begins with 'where to begin'.

That's it for now. You're doing a great job already, and somehow I get the feeling like you've been on Santharia before *grins*, so keep on going like this and you should get a title soon!

With regard,
Simonne

Thanks, Simonne! :)

I checked on the elven calculator, and it says that 32 years old, and I would have the approximate knowledge and training of a 26 year old. That's practically grown up, isn't it? That's how I want it. But thanks anyway! :D

I will edit her appearance when I next come online.

By the way, look at my last name, switch the second 'l' and the second 's' around, then read it backwards. ;)

Writing style??? Familiar??? You could not have read my CD (unless you looked through the approved characters archive), cuz I was already approved before you came! Just. I think the day I was approved was the day you posted your CD.

Jiro, if you read the last sentence of my reply to Simonne, you would know who I am by now. :D

Oh, and thanks for the praise about the personality. grin

People will have to give me advice on what weight I should be, I'm afraid. I always measure weight in kg, so I'm not too sure with ounces, stones, etc. buck

And I have done the edits.

Hey, you all think I'm a newb but I've been here for more than 2 years. Don't ask what my old characters names were, it's a long story. The point is I've been here long before you were approved.  ;)
