Domesticated Pig

« on: July 24, 2007, 07:26:05 PM »

Don't laugh, especially you Vesk and Phyth! buck

Name: Buri Ironforge (Pets don't use last names, just an indication of his owner.)
Gender: Male
Age: 10
Race: Pig
Breed: Domesticated Pig
Occupation: Thorgas' Familiar, sometimes used to dig up edible roots to eat. He can also be used to predict the weather.
Title: Chubby Boar

Overview: Buri is very fat pig, much like his master, who loves simple things in life such as eating and sleeping. His favorite food is the tuberroot, and his favorite activity is "scratch my belly" time.
Height: 2 fores
Weight: 220 ods
Hair Color: Brown
Eye Color: Dark Brown

Physical Appearance: Buri is a very large boar, standing at the height of 2 fores tall, but with a length of 1.5 peds. This length is roughly equal to the height of his master and the pig is nearly as heavy too, with a weight of 220 ods. He has two yellowish tusks, about 2 palmspans long, and a coat of shaggy, coarse hair in the color of brown. Buri has a short tail, topped with a tuff of black hair, and a sensitive, turned-up snout which he uses to locate food. Lopped ears makes the pig cute; though his size deters any description of it. The boar has a pair of shiny, dark brown eyes, probably due to sleeping so much. Sometimes those eyes can also be piercing, if anyone finds it foolish enough to offend a boar his size.

Clothing: Pigs don't wear clothes, though he has a soft, leather collar, in the color of black, wrapped around his neck. This is to distinguish that the pig is something very precious to his master, who had treated him as a son when Thorgas did not find any mate.

Personality: Buri tends to be an introvert, and as such prefer sleeping and eating than to running around and impressing people. Despite this behavior, he is very friendly to others and loyal to Thorgas. He is also highly protective of the dwarf if he feels that he is being threatened, Many a time that some passerby would taunt and make fun of the short, bearded fellow, which Buri does not tolerate; he would gore and stomp the offender with the slightest hint of provocation.
Buri is sometimes lazy and stubborn, if he feels like it. He is lazy in the sense that he'd prefer lying around and sleeping rather than to trot around. Thorgas seems to spoil him into further lazyness him by scratching his belly, an activity that both enjoyed very much. Lastly, his obstinancy can get a little out of hand. Many a time has Buri sat down in the middle of a road despite Thorgas' coaxing and pushing. People find it hilarious indeed to see two obese creatures pushing around, the dwarf trying to push the pig out of the way of wagons, carts and such.

Strengths and weaknesses:

Strengths:

Overgrown and sharp tusks: The pig's primary means of defense. His strength could prove to be essential in building up his momentum as a preparation to charge towards an offender, thus making it harmful and even fatal to those who would be unfortunate enough to underestimate it's use.

Sheer size and weight: As if the tusks weren't enough, the pig also has this valuable asset of being big; He could simply impose his will over an enemy, using his heavy bulk to crush and decimate those who are incompetent enough to provoke both dwarf and pig.

Ability to predict the weather: This is not strange for a domesticated pig. Farmers have used them to foresee what the weather might be, as they are very sensitive to climatic changes. They are known to burrow beneath straw and leaves if there is a storm approaching.

Sensitive snout: His keen sense of smell is very useful in detecting sources of food otherwise not obvious to the casual observer.

Weaknesses:

Slow: With his size comes this disadvantage; he needs to trot slowly first to gradually gain his full speed, which is not exactly fast.

Sensitive snout: The most important part of the pig can also be used against him; offensive smells unfamiliar to the pig will drive him off.

Cannot communicate his thoughts to others: This is normal to other animals, but in a world where people and not animals dominate, this is a serious setback. He cannot communicate with Thorgas and others about what he needs and wants, and he also cannot warn his master about hidden strangers and bandits detected by his keen sense of smell. He could only make grunting noises and strange movements, but it is often misinterpreted.

Glutton: Food is one of his greatest weakness. It can disturb him and thus makes him a vulnerable target to others with malicious intent. There are many instances where Thorgas had to rescue him from poachers who had trapped him with food used as lures.

Stubborn: Like father, like son. If Buri is feeling lazy or if he doesn't want to do anything, like walking for example, he would just lie in the comfort of his stall or any other place he deemed comfortable. Thorgas always had a hard time coaxing Buri to stand up and walk. First he entices him with treats; Buri will just eat it then return to his nap. Then Thorgas will use threats, but Buri will not mind it. He knows, as an instinct and from experience, that Thorgas will never harm him. Lastly, the aged sorcerer will push him in a futile attempt to make him stand, which will never work since Buri is as heavy as the dwarf.

Tasty Looking and many parts aside from his meat can be used: It has been said that the only useless part of a pig is it's squeal, and this is one of the greatest problems a pig could face. If he would be put on sale at a market, Buri will be a choice piece of meat because every cut from him is perfect. The ham, fatback, flank, and loin are but few of his parts that will catch the attention of butchers and drunkards alike. Many times has the pig been chased by ruffians and poachers because of his size, as he would surely go for a high price in the market. other inedible parts of a pig can also be used in some ways. Pig's hide can be used to make gloves and boots, and his fur can be used as a coat for protection against cold weather, or for the tips of paintbrushes. Because of this, poachers who have caught sight of the pig often called him as a "trotting treasure", though they don't live long enough to spread this as Thorgas would burn them alive in anger.

History:
It was a fine morning when the farmer, Jastar, came to the pen to inspect his pigs. Most of them were pregnant, and judging by their sizes the man expects to have many healthy piglets, and with this comes the opportunity to make lots of money. The pregnant sows and their mates were separated from those not carrying the unborn, for the purpose of checking each individual carefully. Sighing contentedly, the farmer poured gruel at the feeding troughs of the pigs. The smell of the food woke the sows. They trotted over to the trough, accepting the food the farmer offered them. In one of his pens he kept his prized pig; a large, fine boar, with beautiful fur and strong legs. This pig has won in a contests among pigherds, and undoubtably one of the finest boars in the land. Thoughts of the contest alternating with the income he will generate from selling the pigs made his day wonderful indeed. He hummed a happy tune as he walked towards his hut.

A few months later, the sows gave birth to the piglets. The farmer and his wife looked on, overjoyed at the healthy piglets. The pen was filled with squeals and grunts, as sows gather their babies and fed them milk. Jastar looked on happily, counting in his mind the total gold he will earn with such healthy pigs. He looked at the pen where he kept his prized boar and their litters. There were 6 healthy piglets, evidence of their heritage and the care of the farmer. One of the piglets is the soon to be Buri, and he was the largest of the litter. Weeks passed, and with careful attention the farmer gave to his sows and their litters, the piglets became exceptionally large; large enough to turn into ham and bacon. Finally he decided that on the next week, he would travel to the market and sell the pigs.

The day came, and Jastar was busy with preparing a wagon to carry his piglets. He formed a caravan of 5 wagons, each carrying cages with piglets in them along with some items to barter. One crate contains Buri. The farmer thought it better to separate him from the others due to his size; he wouldn't fit with others in one cage. They also knew very well than to butcher the pigs and deliver the meat to the institute; the meat will spoil before arriving to their destination. Thus the journey started, their first stop is the magical academy of Ximax. He knew his pigs would fetch a good prize in the academy, whose kitchens expect the delivery of pork. The caravan lurched forward and started the trip to the academy.

Finally they saw the many towers of the institute. The farmer urged the caravan and its drivers to speed up to avoid spending the night in the wilderness. In their haste, two of their goods tumbles down, one is a cage and the other a basket of fruit, the sound of its fall inaudible amongst the neighing of horses and grunting of other pigs. The force of the fall coupled by the weight of the pig destroyed the cage, and the fruit from the other container scattered about the place. The sleeping pig, surprised by the unexpected rescue, sat there, looking at his surroundings. Upon seeing the fruit, the pig jumped up and ate them. After satisfying his hunger, the pig went to a nearby bush and went to sleep.

Morning came, and the piglet was hungry. He let forth several loud squeals, some which reached the ears of a dwarven traveller. The dwarf approach cautiously, his staff in his hands, and stepped into the clearing. The dwarf looked around, taking note of the destroyed cage and the fruit seeds scattered about, and then finally turning his attention to his find. The pig, upon seeing the dwarf, jumped up and approach his sack, where he found a delicious meal. The pig gobbled them up and stared at the stranger, anticipating for more food. The dwarf laughed, and decided to keep the pig. Thus, he was given the name Buri, and finally found someone to love and care for him.

Weapons: Pigs are not capable of handling weapons other than his natural weapons, namely their tusks and hooves.

Belongings: His collar that Thorgas gave him. Although this strap of leather is considered valueless in other's eyes, Buri adores it and gets very angry at anyone who tries to remove it.

Familiars: Thorgas Ironforge, a Mitharim dwarf who managed to stumble into the clearing where Buri slept is the most loyal companion the pig could ever have. He stands at 1.5 peds tall, weighs 250 ods, and measures 4 spans at the shoulder. Thorgas is a pale skinned dwarf with green eyes, brown hair and beard. The length of his beard is one-half of a ped.

Any other weaknesses I could add? I don't want the "Physically handicapped" type. I want to make the pig as whole as possible. cry

lol...great CD Thorgas grin

Well, a weakness could be a stubborn streak.  If Buri decides he not in the mood to travel that day 9for example) it would make for a comic read for Thorgas to have to spend time trying to motivate the pig...treats first, then threats, finally trying in vain to physically push him....

Familiars:  Thorgas Ironforge

Last, as a quick critique.. You have a mixture of present and past tense scattered throughout the history section (maybe other sections that I missed, but definately the history section)

On a personal note, could you describe Buri's ham areas and his bacon bits just a little more in detail *mouth watering* evil

Great idea, Altario! grin

Familiars: Thorgas Ironforge. Haha, now my brother is looking at me for laughing all by myself. LOL

And yes, I'm still in the process of writing the CD and there are bound to be many errors hardly visible to me. By tomorrow I will fix all of them, and have the exclamation message icon up.

Thank you for the quick critique. :P

EDIT: That is why I deliberately did not mention those parts. Rolling
