Garret watched as Denrykmar tried to get up, but he quickly returned to his position. He was about to offer help again, but he was already trying once more and succeeded in gaining his feet. He wobbled a bit. Garret stepped forward to help him but his friend ignored him and rushed over to his horse's side. Garret watched in amazement as he dropped down to one knee beside the horse.

"No, you can't die," Denrykmar pleaded.

Garret knew how much that horse meant to him and understood that it would be deviating to him if the horse didn't make it. It wasn't looking good though. The horse was breathing heavily and it seemed as if lifting its large head would sap the rest of its energy. Denrykmar checked the horse for any injuries as Garret stood by silently. He was ready to offer his friend help. Garret knew that his friend wouldn't be ushered into the city until he had taken care of his horse so he waited. Denrykmar grabbed hold of the horse's reins and stood, calling to the horse and trying to coax it too it's feet. It took a lot but after a while of work, and plenty of yelling the horse finally got to his feet.

One the horse was alright Garret saw Denrykmar look over to where Mallowart was. The sargeant was kneeling beside the body of a fallen soldier, with tears running down his face. Garret knew he couldn't go over there; he was too physically and mentally weak for that right now. He didn't know very many people here but even the death of one he didn’t know created an inner pain. Garret walked over to Denrykmar's side and put a hand lightly on his shoulder.

"Let's get into the city, you need that wound looked at and I'm pretty sure how you attracted that unwanted attention is a pretty good story." Garret said the attempting to lighten the mood, "Well, at least now you know not to bring home vicious wolf-like creatures."

Denrykmar nodded at his friends suggestion.  "Yes, lets get inside, but I need to see Altario, or the general.  I saw something, Garret.  Something those orcs were wiling to give up their lives to stop me from telling you."   He started toward the city, but he stumbled and nearly fell.  He handed the reins to Garret, futher proof of both their friendship and the seriousness of his wound.  He would never give up Zekar to someone he did not trust, especially after the horse being injured. "See to it that Zekar is treated well tonight.  He is a hero.  And see if you can find me a horse to ride, for I'll never make it to the headquarters."

Denrykmar sank to one knee.  He looked at his wound, closer now.  He could make out the different layers of flesh in the wound, and a yellow layer of fatty tissue.  It almost made him vomit.  It looked as though one of the wargs sharp fangs had caught him and slid through his skin like a sharp blade.  He had never been wounded before, and deep inside, he felt fear because of it.  Did that make him a coward?  Was he less of a man as a result?

He let the cold wind sooth him for a moment, forcing down the bile that threatened to spill from him.  He opened his eyes again, swallowing large gulps of air, beads of sweat on his forhead despite the frigid temperatures.  "Then after, I'm getting so drunk, I'll sleep through the rest of this war."

"Yes, let's get inside, but I need to see Altario, or the general. I saw something, Garret. Something those orcs were wiling to give up their lives to stop me from telling you." Denrykmar said. Garret watched his stumble slightly as he turned toward the city. The he handed the horse reins to Garret, speaking again, "See to it that Zekar is treated well tonight. He is a hero. And see if you can find me a horse to ride, for I'll never make it to the headquarters."

Garret scanned the field for a moment, though it looked like none had taken the time to saddle a horse. It had been a quick glance but Garret couldn’t afford to waste time on. Denrykmar had sunk to one knee and he was inspection the wound. It looked bad and Garret knew he couldn't leave Denrykmar out there while he went off to look for a horse. The man's breathing was almost as labored as the horses' and beads of sweat grew upon his forehead. Garret knelt next to his friend.

"It's just a little ways to the Western Gate and you can't be out here with a wound like that much longer." Garret said, "Let's go, it will only get worse and then you might not be able to get there without me carrying you and I doubt I have the strength for that."

Garret waited for Denrykmar's reply. He could support most his friend's weight to the gates and then they could find him a horse and someone to escort him to headquarters. Garret would have counseled him to seek a healer first but from what Denrykmar had said the news was urgent. Belatedly Garret thought about the wound and the dangers of keeping it exposed right now. He grabbed his sword and cut a few somewhat clean strips of heavy cotton from his blood-soaked and destroyed cloak, holding it out to the injured man.

"Here, at least bind that until you can get some help," Garret said, holding out the strips.

Carefully, Denrykmar lifted his arms in the air.  He knew there was no way he could bandage himself, so he waited for Garret to administer the first aide.  He only knew that they had to get to Graviaro, and Altario.  At the speed the orcs were moving, it would not be too long before the main army arrived at the city's wall.

How many of Remusiat's proud young men would die in the coming weeks?  He had come so close to becoming the first, it made him shudder.  But this was far from over.  So much bloodshed, so much pain.  "Hurry Garret, and ignore me if I scream," he tried to joke.

Sargeant Mallowart

Mallowart directed the gathering of the fallen warriors body, and had it sent to the barracks.  They would clean him up their, and see to it that the body was taken care of.  As for the orcs and wargs that lie dead, he had them placed in a large pile and had carteloreen oil poured on them and set alit.  Their dirty and putrid bodies would never see the inside of the city.  Dark smoke trailed as a black pillar into the sky.  It was satisfying to see, though a thousand orc deaths could not make up for the loss of one of his boys.  He sighed, and a grim expression came over his face.

Now, what about that fool who tried to get himself killed?  He would deal with that immediately.  He stomped off in the direction of the guards office near the gate.  He opened the door and stepped in, waving the two guards that escorted the man her, that they should leave.  He knew they would be just outside the door, should he need them.

Mallowart glared at the newcomer.  "Lets start with your name.  After that, we'll discuss your lack of brains."  He sat heavily at his desk, awaiting the response from this man.

He was interupted by the door opening and another man entering.  It was the night sargeant on duty, Kressfell.  Mallowart nodded his greeting.  "We have here a hero."  His voice was biting sarcasm.

Kressfell, a longtime sargeant in the guards, looked at the man in the room.  "Oh, do we?  A real live hero, here, with us?  I'm honored."  He mockingly bowed to the man.  He turned to Mallowart.  "Sorry to hear one of your boys went down, Mallowart.  But, I hear you did a fine job in dealing with the attack.  The scout okay?"

Mallowart nodded.  "He'll be fine.  Cut up, he was, but not too bad.  If it weren't for his horse, that boy never would have gotten back here."  He frowned.  "Keep a close look out tonight, Kress.  I got a bad feeling something is going to happen.  Don't know why a group of orcs that small would risk coming this close to the gates just for one man.  He knows something important.  I'd bet your stripes on it."

Kressfell grinned at Mallowarts ease at betting his stripes, but he nodded in agreement.  "I reckon you are right.  I'll make sure my men are extra vigilant."

Mallowart nodded, then faced the man across from him.  "You deaf, boy?  I asked your name."

Garret watched as Denrykmar lifted his arms into the air. He nodded and laid the strips across a bent knee, then took a smaller piece and folded it up. The wound looked pretty bad and Garret could guess that one those wolf-like creatures had caused it. He shook his head slowly, he wasn't a healer. He only knew the basics of bandaging a wound, but at least that would help. His ears picked up his friends voice and the strained humor within.

"Hurry Garret, and ignore me if I scream," Denrykmar said.

Garret nodded and took the folded cloth and put it over the wound before carefully wrapping the strips tightly around it. When he had finished he inspected the knots carefully to make sure none with come undone before a healer could get to him. He nodded to himself, it would hold, he hoped. He looked back up at his friend.

"That should hold till ya can get to a healer. Let's get inside and find ya a horse," Garret said, extending his arm to help him up and give him support as they made their way to the city, "we should find someone to escort ya to headquarters all as well."

With each bandage Garret applied, Denrykmar felt like calling out, but he bore the pain in typical Shialt-eck-Gorrin silence.  He felt beads of perspiration build on his forehead, but he was quite proud of the fact he did not call out, nor pass out.  He stood with Garrets help and leaned heavilly on his friend, as they walked through the western gate and on their way to the army headquarters.  The news he carried needed to get told as soon as possible.

They walked in silence, passing concerned Remusiat citizens who had heard of the squirmish at the gate and had ventured out to see what was happening.  Rumours flew faster than the quickest hawk, Denrykmar mused.  It wasn't long before the army headquarters were spotted.  Soon, he would be able to deliver the news.  Altariio should be back from Urimpaar by now.

He glanced at Garret, who selflessly helped him along.  "Thank you, my friend.  I thought I was orc bait out there.  Next time one of us needs saving, I get to be the rescuer, all right?"

Garret had watched as Denrykmar had silently sat through the pain of applying the bandages. Once he was done with the bandages Garret helped his friend up, the injured scout leaning heavily on him. They made there way through the Western Gate and the city, heading toward the army headquarters. Many citizens crowded the streets, those that didn't know about the happenings at the gates trying to find out the news. Thankfully the army headquarters came into view. They were almost there when Denrykmar glanced over at him.

"Thank you, my friend. I thought I was orc bait out there. Next time one of us needs saving; I get to be the rescuer, all right?" Denrykmar said.

Garret couldn't help but grin, "All right, as long as you don't bring anymore wild animals home. They may look cute but they can and will kill you, as I'm just you've realized."

"You deaf, boy?  I asked your name.", demanded the sargent.
"My name is Vincent Varkatzas", replied Vincent, "and most people would consider it unwise to say a Kasumarii has a lack of brains when it comes to battle" He said this and the cold, hard shine returned to his eyes. As it was he was already resiting the urge to kill both men and leave this god forsaken place to the orcs.

Sargeant Mallowart

Mallowart arched an eyebrow.  A Kasumarii?  Was that intended to be a warning?  Mallowart leaned forward, his strong hands gripping the edge of the desk.  "Listen here, boy.  This is Remusiat, and this is our home.  You are a long way from your's, you remember that.  You are a visitor here, in a place that doesn't like a whole lot of visitors, especially ones that interfere where they have not been invited."   He relaxed a bit and sat back in his chair.  He breathed for a moment, regaining his composure.

If this had been a normal day, perhaps he would teach the whelp a lesson, but it was not a normal day, and it was far from over for him.  He still had to take care of the arrangements for his fallen soldier.  It fell on his shoulders to take the news to the general, and then to the boy's family.  No, his night was far from over.

"Get out," he told Vincent, simply.  "And don't let me catch you getting yourself into trouble again, or next time I won't be so generous."

Zaggins.  He knew the family.  Knew there were two sisters still living with the parents.  Dammit.  He hated this more than any other duty or requirement of the job.  Tonight he would deliver the news that would destroy a family.

"Get out,"  the soldier said  "And don't let me catch you getting yourself into trouble again, or next time I won't be so generous." Vincent nodded and headed toward the door.

Before he exited he turned around and threw a small pouch of coins onto the ground in front of the Sargent and said, "Here, give this to the family. There should be enough in there to cover the costs of a decent funeral. War will lead to hard times ahead and the family will welcome the extra money"

Vincent then turned around and ducked out the door. One outside he looked at the orc blood that covered his hands and frowned. Pictures came flooding back of his grandfather lying broken and bloodied on the ground..... He quickly pushed the thoughts away and continued walking.

Sargeant Mallowart

Mallowart looked at the pouch of what he assumed were coins, if the sound of them hitting the desk were any indication.  He snorted derisively, but picked up the pouch, nodding to himself.  The family definitely would be able to to use this, with Zaggins no longer bringing home an enlisted man's meager pay, the family was going to be in for some hard times.  He slipped the pouch into one of his pockets, then looked over to Kressfell.  "Well, as much as I hate this, I'm heading over to Zaggins' family home."  He stood up from the desk.

Kressfell nodded with understanding in his eyes. He too had been required to do that on many occasions, and it never got any easier.  "Very well, my friend.  And get some sleep tonight.  If you are correct, in that something is going to happen, it might be the last opportunity you get for awhile to sleep soundly."

Sighing, Mallowart placed a hand on Kressfell's shoulder as he left the warmth of the guards office.  "Just be careful, Kress.  I love your wife too much to have to deliver this kind of news to her about you."

Outside, the wind had not died down, and in fact, may have increased.  He wrapped his arms about himself and trudged in the direction of the Zaggins home.  As he headed in the direction of the home, which was located in the southern area of the city, where most of the houses could be found, he thought he caught a glimpse of Prince Timeras riding his stallion, but it was only for a moment.  No, it couldn't be.  The prince would have no reason to be in this area of the city.  Mallowart dismissed it.

Finally, he stopped in front of a modest Remusian, typical in its design; stone walls with a carteloreen framed roof.  He pounded on the rawhide stretched over wison horn door that stood before him.  He could hear noises from inside, and a moment later the door opened and a grey haired older woman stood.  She smiled at the sargeant, "Well, hello Mall, how are you tonight?  Please, come in out of the cold."  She pulled him into the modest sized home, its central fire and fur lined walls making it very comfortable.  "What is it that brings you to our....."  Her voice trailed off as she saw the pain in his eyes, and the realization of what this visit meant suddenly dawned on her.  She began to shake her head and tears filed her eyes.  "No, no... tell me it isn't true.... tell me anything......nooooooo".

Isoto, using the sun's position, headed towards the Western gate. The snow crunched under his feet, white, crisp, bloody. Bloody? Isoto stopped, he had stepped in blood. He bent to one knee and took a sample of the partially frozen goo.

He held the crimson mass to his nose and smell, orc, so this is where the battle had taken place. In a way Isoto was upset that he had missed the fun. Isoto stood and looked around, he wsan't a patient elf so with a loud call he cries. "Does any one know where I can find Sargeant Mallowart or Sargeant Kressfell." Isoto typically did not yell uot for people but he was in somewhat of a rush to learn as much about the city and its plight before the orcish army had a chance to strike.

The glint on Isoto's shoulder caught his attention, the pins Altario had pinned on him reflected in the sun, the sun bore against the bronze pins casting a faint shadow. Just another reminder of the impending battle soon to ensue them all.

Sargeant Kressfell

Kressfell sat in his office.  He had just come back from checking on the men's positions.  As always, they were at their stations and needed no correcting.  As much as Mallowart was proud of his boys, Kressfell was as proud of his men.  Years of intensive training went into his men, and each knew their role.  This was his source of pride, next to the pretty woman he had the honour of calling wife, and his two children, both boys with immeasurable energy.

There was knock on the door.  He looked up from the desk.  "Yes?"

A guard stuck his head in the door.  "Excuse me, Sargeant, but there is a disturbance outside.  An elf is shouting for you or Sargeant Mallowart."

Knitting his brow, Kressfell pushed himself back from the desk, the squeak of carteloreen bone sliding across stone floor ringing in his ear.  He tightened his coat and stepped outside.  The brightness was a bit daunting at first, and he shielded his eyes from the sun, which was getting lower in the sky.  He saw a shadowy figure up ahead, and surmised that it was the elf.  What would an elf want with him, he wondered.  He approached the figure.  "I'm Kressfell, Sargeant of the Guards.  What is your business with me?"

Before the figure could answer, Kressfell spotted a glint of metal on the elf's collar.  His eyes widened in surprise when he recognized the cause.  There was a Aide de Camp insignia pinned to the elf's collar.  How did he get that?  That was Captain Altario's!  "Where did you get that?"

“I received them from Captain Altario himself,” Isoto stood and readied his explanation, he knew that many would ask him why he bore Sir Altario’s pins, “ Sir Altario has been promoted and I am the new aide to the General.”

Isoto knew there were other matters to attend to so he spoke bluntly, “Sergeant I need every archer under your command to equip themselves with a set of incendiary arrows.” Isoto smiled when he said this, “It’ll give those damned orcs something to think about.”

Isoto stood in the cold as he eagerly awaited the Sergeants reply, his reply would mean a significant deal, if he listened it meant he respected the position Isoto had been given and if not it meant Isoto had a long road ahead to prove himself.

The problem was all the men seemed endeared to their former aide and they would not be as welcoming to a new comer, a drow no less. As Isoto thought he stood firm and rigorous against the bitter cold nipping at him.
