Greenbark Brownie

« on: January 13, 2008, 01:45:09 PM »

Name: Pipook “Pip” Blindeye

Gender: Female

Age: 18

Race: Brownie

Tribe: Vale “Llaoihrr”

Ethinic Group: Greenbark

Occupation: Brownie Hunter (“Prowler”)

Title: Blind Hunter

Character Portrait:

Overview: A hunter separated from the rest of her group while out hunting, Pipook “Pip” Blindeye wanted to see the rest of the world instead of going back to her home. With her myrddin falcon friend, whom she rides for long journeys, she travels the world, seeing new wonders every day and realizing that there’s more to the world then the small Vale she was raised in.

Appearance:
Height: 1 palmspans and 4 nailsbreadths.
   Hair Color: Sognastheen
   Eye Color: Cyhalloi Snow

Physical Appearance: To a normal human observer, Pip would seem just like a walking leaf. Yet, if one was the same size as her, they would see that she is much more than a walking, talking leaf. Her skin is a light gnastheen. Her clothes blend in with her skin tone as she wears leaves she collects from various trees and bushes. She makes them herself and has to make them quite frequently, for after she picks the leaves, they can die quickly, leaving her with brown and crumbling clothes.

The only piece of clothing that doesn’t match is her small cape, which is made from the fur of a common rat. This rat, deperate for something to eat, tried to attack her when she wasn’t on her guard. Killing the rat, she cooked the meat and carried it with her while she turned the fur into a cape. Because the cape is so long on her, and it even has a hood, that some people, and animals, at a glance take her for a small rat or a mouse.

Even though both her parents were Greenbarks, Pip was born with white eyes, natural only for the Birchbark Brownies. Her father figured that there must have been a Birchbark married into the family at some point in history.

The hair upon her head is a dark sognastheen. She usually keeps her hair up in two buns, one on each side of her head.  The shorter hair which lies on the front of her head frames her face, but sometimes it annoys her because she has to keep pushing it out of her face when she’s hunting.

Upon her back are three scars given to her by the common rat that surprised her when she was separated from her group. They are all in a row and are just beginning to fade. Because it is down the middle of her back, no one is able to see these unless they were to see her unclothed.

Personality: Pip is a curious young Brownie out in a world that she does not know. Yet, even so, she keeps an optimistic air about her. Having Uheiohah with her makes her feel safer. She is always is friendly towards other races, especially humans. She wants to be friendly towards them because she has come to realize that they are in control of the world, and if she is hostile towards them, then it would end badly for her.

She talks frequently to Uheiohah when they’re alone. If she doesn’t, then she will fall into a slight depression, thinking that she never should have left home. To Uheiohah does she tell all her fears and secrets. One fear that she has is she will never find her way home and never get married. Another fear is that she has been kicked out of her clan, thus loosing all the work that she had put into it in the few years that she was there.

Strengths:
--Small size: Her small size allows her to go places that most people aren’t able to go. This helps her when someone asks her to do something that they can’t do, or when she has to hide from the bigger folk.
--Very good with the blowpipe: This allows her to bring down small prey or enemies.
-- Uheiohah: She allows Pip to go long distance very quickly. She can’t carry over extremely long distances as she would get tired too easily.
--Knows how to use poison, but not how to make it. She only uses this for killing enemies that she has no intention of eating.

Weaknesses:
--Small size: Even though her small size can come in handy, Pip has been mistaken as prey by larger animals, and often she is ignored by many of the large folk.
--Naïve: She doesn’t know a whole lot about the world, so sometimes she assumes things, only to be proven wrong.
--Fear of rats: Because of the incident in the woods, Pip has a fear of rats, which makes her nervous and likely to miss with her weapons a lot more.
--Not fluent in Tharian. She knows the basic concepts, but putting them together and pronouncing them correctly gives her a hard time when trying to communicate with other races in Santharia.
--Doesn't know how to make poison. If she runs out of poison while out hunting, or just out anywhere, she's in trouble. Much of her small income must go into buying poison, which in of itself can be hard as she can't speak fluent Tharian and a lot of the "big people" can't hear her very well.

History:
Pipook “Pip” Blindeye was born in the Vale of Brownies to two Greenbark Brownies.  Her father was part of the Hamm’rer clan while her mother was part of the Hotfinger clan.

When she was born, the first thing everyone noticed about her was her completely white eyes. At first, her parents worried that she was blind, but as she grew older, they noticed that she followed their movements with her head, thus implying that she was not blind. The only explanation that they could offer was that a Birchbark has married into the family at some point in the past, and it was just showing through in Pip’s eyes.

Pip’s childhood was normal for any other Brownie. A few decided to pick on her because of her eyes, but because of her attitude towards life, she merely shrugged them off and kept on going. She even took the surname of “Blindeye” willingly, thinking that it would make her stand out from her peers.

15 years in her life, the Choosing Day had come. She took the test, and found that she had the skills to be a part of the Prowler clan. Happily, she took the position, knowing that the test couldn’t possibly be wrong.

Indeed, the test seemed to be right about Pip. Her skills with the blowpipe excelled against the other students. Soon, she was at the top of the class, and she was one of the few students chosen to go out and hunt the animals for Choosing Day the next year.

The year after that, she was chosen to go hunting again, but this time, she would never return and see her family again. She had been instructed to go track an unusual set of prints. Knowing that she could handle it alone, Pip set out on her own. The tracks disappeared and Pip turned to go back.

Suddenly, she realized that she had never seen this part of the forest before. She had been so intent on finding the creature that had made the tracks she had forgotten to pay attention to her surroundings. Cursing herself at being so careless, she also realized that she had done a perfect job of covering up her own tracks.

While she was trying to figure out what to do, a common rat came up from behind her. Taken by surprise, it was able to managed one scratch across her back before she realized that it was behind her. Giving a scream, she fell to the ground. The rat, thinking that it had won, took it’s time to investigate her body. This gave her enough time to take one of her blow-pipe sticks and dip it into the poison. When the rat finally came to investigate the damage that it had done, Pip moved quickly and jabbed the stick into its neck, killing it almost instantly.

She was bleeding quite badly, but the leaves which made up her clothes acted as a bandage and stopped the bleeding. Because she was by herself, there was nothing more she could do about it. The scratches were in an odd place and she couldn’t reach it. She prayed that it wouldn’t get infected and went along her way.

The next day she knew that it hadn’t been infected, because the pain wasn’t as bad, and she couldn’t feel the sharp, shooting pain she knew she would get if there was an infection. She slowly loosed the muscles in her shoulders and back and headed on her way.

By now Pip had realized that she could now see what the outside world was like. She no longer had anything attaching her to the Vale. Her mind was made up. For now, she would not seek out her home, but instead, go exploring.

After only a few days, she heard something in the underbrush. It sounded like a high-pitched crying. Under further investigation, she found that it was a myrddin falcon hatchling that had fallen from its nest. The only damage that she could see with it was a broken talon and a broken wing. After splinting them with some branches, Pip decided to stay with the chick until it was old enough to take care of itself.

After a month had passed, the falcon was able to fly. Pip, not knowing that they still stayed with their parents, figured that it would now leave her and go to find itself a mate. Yet, the bird still followed Pip. At first, this annoyed her, as she didn’t think that she needed anyone, or anything, to accompany her on her journey. But the falcon wouldn’t go away.

Finally, Pip relented and allowed the falcon to follow her. She figured out that it was a female, for by studying other birds, she had come to realize that the females of the avian races were usually more drab in their coloring. She named the falcon “Uheiohah” which means “youngling wing”.

When Uheiohah got older, Pip would ride her long distances, making her journey easier. Uheiohah viewed her like her mate. She never goes out searching for a mate, and always stays by Pip.

Weapons:
--Bow with a quiver full of small arrows.
--Vial filled with a poison. Used on the tips of the arrows and sticks
--Blowpipe with small, sharp sticks as ammo

Belongings:
--Rat cape
--Weapons (see above)

Familiars: Uheiohah, her myrddin falcon, was found by Pip when Uheiohah was just a hatchling. Uheiohah is a typical female of her kind. Her feathers are all dull gray, except for the belly, whereas they are all white. Her golden eyes shine bright, and dazzle whenever light shines upon them.

This looks interesting already... Just so we're clear on this, she's called 'Blindeye' because of the whiteness of her eyes, right, and not because she's actually blind? Because if the latter is true, she can't 'see' the wonders of the world ^.^

Anyway, looking forward to reading the rest of this character...

@ Pip, it is not neccessary to use Santharian colours in the CD. While it is nice, green is green and white is white, and it may confuse people who wish to check your appearence.

Nic, then those people should just look up the Santharian colours. There are three or four of each colour listed on the site, at least, and they're not all the same. It shows that Pip has done her research, and gives a very nice Santharian feel to the CD :)

@Simonne: Yes, she's called Blindeye because she has white eyes even though she's a Greenbark. That'll be explained in the appearance section and also in her history.

@Niccoli: If a Santharian is describing colors, then they would use the Santharian color wheel, not the real world one. To me, it's the same thing as having to use the Santharian measurements. ;)

Not exactly constructive, but my real name is Pip, so I thought I'd introduce myself and say hello.  I'll try and not get confused when people speak of you, Pipook.

Added everything....now I just need to finish the history and personality.

@Ruil: I know someone else with the name Pip. Although it's a nickname. And around you, I'll just go by Pipook. ^_^

Hello Pip! A delightful read as usual for you. I only have a pair of suggestions for you after reading this over. The addition of a semi-potent weakness would be in order to create balance. Also: Her weapons should be listed as separate strengths with examples of her skill in each. Not lumped together, as they are indeed their own strengths.

I finally finished her and I hope that the added weakness is weak enough. Kinda had me stumped on that one. :\

Hey Pip, sorry to give you some bad news but if you know how to use poison, it should probably be added as a strength, though this could be only a minor one depending on her proficiency. Also, she seems to be able to splint bones.  However, how is her Tharian?  Our average peasant can speak it, so if it's anything less than fluent that makes a good weakness :).

Also, you seem to have been typing whilst on the IRC:

Quote
--Very good with the blowpipe: This allows her to bring down small prey or enemies./me has a list of
--Very good with the bow: This allows her to bring down larger enemies.

Otherwise, woo, Brownie!  Woo! Ahem....

Nice CD  ;)

Hello again Pip! Personally everything looks wonderful to me, though I still feel that her Strengths outweigh her Weaknesses. I would recommend the addition of something to balance her out a tinge better. Her age is also questionable for the amount of skills she possesses, but I'll get with Rookie and have her give us a brownie standpoint. Looking great and not far now!

Just  bumping it up. I changed some of her S&W so hopefully she's a bit more balanced for her age.

I'm still thinking of a new way of leaving the clan for her, thus still a work in progress. I might have something but we'll see. ;)
