« on: April 11, 2009, 12:01:49 PM »

Name: Deklitch Hardin

Gender: Male

Age: 19

Race: Human

Tribe: Erpheronian

Occupation: Researcher

Title: Elf Friend

Overview: Born Erpheronian and raised as a Black Butterfly Rover, Dek has a zest for life and a love of risk and challenge. Possessing both acrobatic and singing talents, Dek was a favourite and popular performer amongst the Rovers during his childhood and early adolescence. Now that he is older and not as agile, Dek has not performed acrobatics for a while, however he still likes to sing. In recent times he has learnt to read and write Tharian and has joined the Compendium, travelling the lands of Santharia as he seeks the truth about his mother and the world around him. When he needs a break from the rigours of travel, he takes a break at his house on the outskirts of the elven city of Silven, or with the merchant Cyradin Lawabel of Xaramon Province in Sarvonia, where he is able to experience relative peace and quiet from the 'poet' Sordoc.

Appearance:
   Height: 1 Ped, 2 Fores, 3 Palmspans

   Weight: 1 Pygge, 2 Hebs, 1 Hafeb

   Hair Colour: Red

   Eye Colour: Grey

   Physical Appearance:
Dek's short red hair, piercing grey eyes and freckled light skin tone suggest his ancestry is Erpheronian and this assessment can be backed up by the profile he presents to the world around him. The belief that he would grow to be a tall man has borne fruit as he is just under two peds in height. His voice deepened during his adolescence and as was expected, it has developed into a good strong tenor, a skill he puts to use when he meets with his fellow compendiumists or acquaintences from throughout North and South Santharia.

Even though it has been a few years since he last plied his childhood trade as an acrobat amongst the Black Butterfly Rovers, the training regime he went through during that time has remained with him until today. He still trains his body hard, and he has now developed a muscular physique. His childhood practice of keeping his hair cut short has continued until today, and in addition he keeps himself cleanshaven. He believes that both practices are desireable as he thinks they make him look neat and professional. Dek has his black butterfly tattoo on his right arm, just below his shoulder blade, however he has no other tattoos anywhere on his body.

Dek can sometimes be seen limping due to injuries he suffered as a child while performing his acrobatic feats. While working, Dek is serious as he concentrates on the task at hand, whether it is recording his insights into what he has seen, interviewing someone or reading through the accounts of others. However, the infectious laughter he had as a child is still present, barely below the surface of his professional image, and it doesn't take long for him to be sharing a joke, story or song with companions. He has always been energetic and lively and a bundle of energy who is never afraid to put his best foot forward, whether that is his left or his right foot, he isn't sure yet.

   Clothing:
      Day to Day
Dek no longer wears the flashy and colourful clothes which he wore as a child amongst the Black Butterfly Rovers. He has given up the yellows, greens and blues of his youth for a white tunic and grey leather trousers. His shirt is short sleeved when he travels around the Kingdom of Santharia, and his trousers are long, reaching to his knees. On the occasions when he travels north, to the lands of the Kuglimz, the Kanapans, Icelands, Eight Winds Bay or as a guest of the Kurikum, he replaces his short sleeve tunic with a long sleeved one.

Dek wears good leather shoes on his feet which he purchased from a merchant near the city of Naios in Xaramon province of Santharia. These shoes are black in colour and are reportedly from the leather of a Kyrattin. Dek also has a cloak that he purchased. When the weather turns cold, he wraps himself in his cloak to keep warm. His cloak is a matching one to the one he had when he was younger, red and yellow in colour, and together with his tattoo, is his main link to his past as a Black Butterfly Rover. Deklitch mainly wears this cloak when he travels through colder climes to keep himself warm.

      Official Clothing
When there is an official compendium function being held, such as a party to celebrate the acceptance of a new member into the Compendium, a holiday celebration, an awards ceremony, or the like, Dek dresses in his formal attire. This attire consists of a toccon long sleeved white shirt, black long trousers, black jacket and black neck tie. A black and white cane, black top hat and his standard black leather shoes finish off the ensemble.

Personality:
Confident in his own abilities, Dek goes into most situations with the strong belief that he can achieve anything he sets his mind to. When he was younger, this belief manifested itself in the areas of acrobatics and singing. Now that he is older and less agile, he has given away the acrobatics and instead has focused his attention on reading and writing. Dek changed his focus in order to seek out the truth about things in the world about him. Whether it was his former life as an acrobat, his former and current life as a singer, or his new experiences as a compendiumist, he always pushes his body, mind and voice to their collective limits and beyond, a fact that has seen him out of action from time to time due to injuries suffered. At these times, he is morose and isolates himself from others, not keen to wait until he has completely healed before returning to his preferred activities, despite the recommendations of others.

Growing up, the biggest regret in his life has been his very limited knowledge of his mother and his father's refusal to talk about her to him. He recalls very little of her, and throughout the years, his father has refused to talk to Dek about her. Dek never blamed his father for his reluctance, the youth just wants to know about her so he can move on to better times down the track and have a renewal of his own life, the renewal promised by his belief in Nehtor.

Apart from the times he is unable to perform or work due to injury, Dek is happy, friendly and very keen to be as helpful as possible to others. When he is the midst of performance or research, he is contented and gives it his all. Dek's friendliness on his travels and his return visits to Remusia, Eight Winds Bay, the lands of the Kuglimz, and the Santharian Kingdom has garnered him friendships amongst his fellow Compendiumists and regular citizens from around Sarvonia.

Strengths and Weaknesses:

   Strengths:
Equally skilled with both hands - While most around him prefer to use either the right or left hand, mainly the right hand, Dek is able to use both hands with equal skill. For as long as he can remember, he has used his dagger in either hand, completed tasks with either hand, commenced his part of acrobatic performances with either his left or right hand and writes with either hand. As an acrobat, this ability led to injuries to him as the other acrobats in his performance expected him to start off with his right hand or left. He also finds at times that writing with his left hand smudges the writing and drawings he has made which results in his work being unclear when reviewed by more senior compendiumists.

Keeps in Shape - As a youngster, Dek trained as an acrobatic and tumbler, he also engaged in running races with others amongst the Black Butterfly Rovers. As he went through his adolescence and got to see more of the world, he was exposed to games such as Kikkit, Break It Down and Goal Ball. Now that he is older and less agile, Deklitch has stopped on the acrobats and tumbling and now focuses on the running and lifting of weights. As he has been doing that for many years, he is both strong and athletic looking. He would never seek to start a fight with others and where possible would use the speed he still possesses to escape from dangerous situations. Since joining the Compendium, his speed was put to use as he raced from Compendiumist to Compendiumist delivering messages and manuscripts to the appropriate people. As an Apprentice and Member of the Compendium, Dek still enjoys running and keeping in shape which aids greatly in getting away from those seek to gain advantage or notice through him, such as the 'poet', Sordoc.

Trained to fight with the Knife - The Black Butterfly Rovers train all their members in how to use the knife to defend themselves in the event that they are attacked. Dek is no different to any other member of the Rovers and received basic training as a knifeman. He is not very skilled in the use of the dagger to defend himself, but so far he has managed to avoid cutting himself with his knife or getting himself killed.

Literate - Since the age of fifteen, Dek has been learning to read and write. He has found it difficult at times, but he has persevered and has begun to master reading and writing in Tharian. He is trying to also master Styrash, but he has found that language to be more of a challenge, particularly in terms of its modals and tenses. Mastering these languages will mean he is able to write down his own findings instead of having them translated by translators from the Compendium.

Singer - As well as being trained in the skills of an acrobat, Dek was also taught how to sing a variety of popular songs by the Rovers. He is able to sing with or without the accompaniment of music or other singers. The other Rovers, especially his teachers, commented favourably about his singing voice and he took this praise on board. As an adult, his voice has changed from his boyish soprano to a tenor, and he uses his love of Singing and Music to examine and report on the different forms and styles of music throughout the Sarvonian continent, as well as singing from time to time around a campfire or in a village's music hall.

Compendium - As a researcher for the compendium, Dek has a huge support network behind him of scholars, pages, artists, musicians, magic experts and a lot of others. As a result, whenever Dek travels, more than likely he'll have someone to stay with. Furthermore, there are a variety of settlements up and down the Sarvonian continent about which he has written and has promised to return to in the future. For the most part, these places have a tavern or an inn which are happy for Deklitch stay at for a reduced cost.

   Weaknesses:
Overconfident - Dek believes that there is nothing that is beyond him. When he was younger, this was a problem while he was a tumbler and acrobat, as he took on risks that were beyond his capabilities. As a singer, he would attempt songs he wasn't ready for and sometimes strained his voice as a result. As a compendiumist he has taken on all challenges presented to him, and has sometimes presented work that isn't up to his normal standard.

Old Injury - While performing for the rest of the Black Butterfly Rovers one evening, Dek misjudged the distance from one of his fellow acrobats to the next one and he came down hard on his left ankle. He sprained it and was forced to rest from it for a few weeks. He was keen to get back to performing and came back before the sprain was properly healed. As a result, the sprain flares up, impacting on his mobility at times.

Thrill seeker - Dek craves the rush that comes from trying new and dangerous things including singing in front of different audiences. This resulted in him taking risks that were beyond him while a member of the acrobatic section of the Black Butterfly Rovers, such as the injury he suffered mentioned previously. It also sees him seeking out new experiences and challenges. As a researcher, this sees Dek travelling throughout the continent of Sarvonia, into a number of dangerous situations and locations, any one of which could result in his death.

Proud of his Heritage - Dek is proud that he grew up as a member of the Black Butterfly Rovers. He makes no attempt to cover the tattoo he has indicating his membership of the Rovers. The tattoo is on his right arm, just below the shoulder blade. Due to the stigma attached to the Black Butterfly Rovers, merchants with whom he has dealings are reluctant to sell him merchandise, for fear that he is going to steal from them. He is also pleased to talk about his time with the Black Butterfly Rovers, particularly his part in their lives.

Seeking the Truth - Ever since he was a youngster amongst the Black Butterfly Rovers, Dek has always wanted to know the truth about things. As a Black Butterfly Rover, he wanted to know the truth about his mother. Despite the warnings he received from his father and other Black Butterfly Rovers to leave it alone, he pushed and questioned and sought the truth. There were some outside of the Rovers who also attempted to drive him off the search, but Dek paid no heed to them either, and in time saw him become injured. As an apprentice in the Compendium, he is on the look out for weird, wonderful and dangerous situations that have a mystery behind them, or a truth in them that deserves to be revealed. This continues to run the risk of Dek getting injured.

His Regrets - The biggest regret that Dek has in his life is that he doesn't know much about his mother. This is compounded by the fact that his father and even other Rovers have refused to talk about her. Dek wants to find out all he can about her and has followed a variety of different leads on her background. This has resulted in him spending time on what could be a futile search, time that could be better spent elsewhere and on other things. It has also resulted in him asking questions of people - questions that some would rather not be asked, and which have, on occasions resulted in him being injured.

Deadlines - The life of a researcher in the Compendium is a life of deadlines. Stories and articles have to be submitted on time. Members of the Compendium have their own areas of interest, and so when he works with such people, Dek needs to be aware of times and dates and fit his schedule around theirs. At times, this impacts on Dek being able to fully seek the truth in what he's investigating. So, he's got quite a few entries on the go and things he wants to identify, 'when he's got the time'.

Sordoc the 'Pest' - From time to time on his travels, Deklitch has unfortunately encountered a 'poet' of extremely limited talents who calls himself 'Sordoc the Great'. This individual, once he heard that Deklitch worked for the compendium, foisted himself onto Deklitch, causing the young man no end of troubles, as Sordoc believes he is the greatest of poets ever in the lands of Caelereth. Sordoc considers himself Deklitch's friend, and that Deklitch will willingly take Sordoc's work to the Compendium to get published in the Compendium.

Unfortunately for Dek, Sordoc turns up with alarming regularity in the region that Dek goes to research and pesters the researcher with his works about the Paxen, the Kraken, the Thunderfoot, the Wison or other large animals, but mostly it is the Paxen. Additionally, some people who see Dek, think that he must be a companion to Sordoc, and Deklitch has been refused admittance to some places, out of fear that Sordoc will grace them with his presence, poetry, readings, songs and interpretive dances.

Religion:
Dek's religious observations and beliefs were formed by his father and the rest of the Black Butterfly Rovers. He believes in the Twelve, and plays particular homage to Nehtor. Dek has mourned for most of his life about the mother he never knew and for his father's depression over her death which has meant that his father has been unable to tell him about her. However, he has hope that Nehtor will bring renewal to his mind and an ending to the sorrow that has plagued him for most of his life. His life among the Black Butterfly Rovers has taught him tolerance of the beliefs of others and does not attempt to impose his beliefs on those he meets.

Since Dek began working within the Compendium, he came across many different thoughts about the gods and goddesses which impacted on his beliefs. He came to recognise Ava and Co'or and even the belief system of the orcs, and the multitude of gods of the Zhunites in distant Nybelmar. Nehtor is still the god that he pays homage to above all, however. The renewal that Nehtor promises has come into Dek's life in its full strength and Dek is content with his lot in life.

History:
   The Rovers
Deklitch's father was of the Rovers with an eye for the ladies. As the Rovers were passing through Astran, he explored and spied a beautiful young lady, or at least she was beautiful to him. He thought she was classy and that her house was classy. They exchanged ... pleasantries over the course of the next two weeks ... and then Deklitch's father and the Rovers left Astran. Deklitch was the result of the pleasantries exchanged.

Deklitch's father returned with the Rovers to Astran about fourteen months later, and saw the boy's mother again. She was being disowned as she refused to give up Deklitch for adoption. She revealed herself as a minor noble. She had a husband picked out for her, lands promised to her, a small fortune. She just had to give up the baby Deklitch, which she had refused to do, and so she was disowned, and lost the land, the money and the promised husband. If Deklitch was the offspring of her promised husband, he would have inherited the lot, but with Dek's father being a Rover, Deklitch was illigitimate. The situation brought disgrace down on her family and on the nobleman's family, and so disowning her was the only solution. Deklitch's father spoke with her and offered her the Black Rover Butterflies to be her new family. She was uncertain at first, but she finally accepted, and joined the Black Butterfly Rovers.

Before long, Deklitch's mother and Deklitch were integrated as part of the lifes of the Black Butterfly Rovers. Deklitch's mother got the tattoo on her right shoulder that would mark her as a Black Butterfly Rover and performed a range of duties around the camp of the wanderers. The young Deklitch grew from a young baby into a toddler and then into a young child who started to talk. His red hair was a gift from his mother, and this made him stand out. He was a happy little child who laughed constantly and people found it difficult to remain angry with him despite his many curiousities. From a young age, he was fast and active and on the go all the time, seemingly unable to sit still for any length of time.

Deklitch was four when disaster struck his family and the Black Butterfly Rovers. A freak accident involving a horse that escaped its harness and seemingly went berserk, just as Deklitch's mother was returning from a nearby lake with water. It struck out at her with its front legs, knocking her to the ground and cracking her skull on a jagged rock. Before the healers of the Rovers could reach her, she had died. Deklitch's father had been responsible for the horses and so blamed himself for her death, even though it was a freak accident. His father was unable to work with the horses since that day, as her death was a guilt that gnawed at him.

The boy showed a variety of skills during his growing up. As previously mentioned, he was a fast runner. In addition to this, he was a skilled tumbler and acrobat. As time went on, he revealed himself to be a fair singer as well. He worked on the tumbling and the singing until he was more than competent at both. As time continued, he performed as part of the Acrobatics Troupe, although he did cause problems at times, starting off on either his left or his right foot, despite training to start on his right. He couldn't understand why others restricted themselves to one or the other, and why they expected him to do the same. To Deklitch, it was natural to use either foot or arm to start off with and this led to injuries and confusions for both himself and others. "Put your best foot forward, Dek," he was often advised by his elders, but Dek wasn't certain whether that was his left foot, or his right foot. In the fullness of time, he received the Black Butterfly Rover tattoo just below his right shoulder blade. He wears the tattoo proudly as a badge of honour.

During one performance, Deklitch had to start on his right foot, run towards a dwarven lad who would flip him up and over into the air, where Dek would perform a somersault and be safely caught by another couple of the young Rovers. Dek started off on his left foot, however, and this caused troubles as he wasn't in position when he got to the young dwarf. As a result, the dwarf wasn't able to get a good enough grip on Deklitch and didn't quite toss him far enough. Subsequently, Dek fell hard on his foot. The young Rover had to spend time on the sidelines, and he felt the loneliness of that keenly, and he pushed himself to return to performance. Against the advice of his seniors, he returned early. He was keen to push himself to his limits, and beyond and this saw him reinjuring the leg. This would be a problem that would plague him on and off during his life, and ultimately saw him drop out of acrobatic performances altogether. At the same time, however, it resulted in him focusing more on his music and singing and in time led to him learning to read and write.

While Dek was s a young boy, his band of Rovers travelled through Xaramon province. While they were stationed near a town, he had to act as the older son of a woman who had lost her husband and beg for money from passer bys. Most people just ignored his pleas for assistance, but there was one person, a youth just a few years older than Dek, who stopped and was quite generous to him, more than doubling the other coins in his begging bowl. His eyes met those of the other boy and he expressed his thanks for the coin. In a day or two, the Rovers would pack up and move on, and as far as Dek knew, he would never be back there again.

Towards the end of his time with the Rovers, Dek discovered that they were returning to near Astan, the city in which he was reportedly born. He set out by himself into the city streets to find out the truth about his mother. His father had hinted at things, and he thought of things ... in any case he wanted to know the truth. His curiousity landed him in trouble, as he was waylaid by some local youths who insisted 'that the Duke only had one daughter', and that was their mother. Dek didn't take the hint and so they attacked him, punching and kicking him and leaving him injured in the streets.

A woman, middle aged and with a friendly face found him, and cared for Dek. As the youth regained his strength, he thought he recognised her voice, and he did recognise the song she sang, but she denied any knowledge of him or the song. Once he recovered sufficiently, he was returned to the Rovers, and was ordered by his father not to seek to find out any more of the past of his mother. Despite his assurances to his father, Dek made a solemn promise to himself ...

Regardless of cost, regardless of danger, regardless of anything, he would track down his mother's past.

A year or so after that incident, Dek decided to leave the Rovers. Not speaking about it to anyone in the camp, he packed up his meagre belongings, and the boy left the Rovers ... for the world outside the Rovers, armed with nothing more than a small knife, his wits, his singing voice, his speed and his skill in reading and writing. Dek didn't realise it at the time, but his father was watching him leave, and said a silent prayer to Nehtor to give his son a new dawn.

   The Compendium
Deklitch quickly became disillusioned. He'd expected that people would be like the Rovers and that they would be welcoming of him. Dek found out quickly that this wasn't the case. Merchants refused to deal with him, innkeepers refused entrance to him, and in time Dek came to realise it was his Black Butterfly Tattoo that was ostricizing him. Deklitch was proud of his heritage, and refused to cover it up. In time, Dek made his way across Manthria to the city of Marcogg, where he first encountered someone calling themself a 'Compendiumist'. Dek asked what that was, and he was told of the team of researchers that were looking into all parts of Caelereth. The boy expressed interest in it, and was invited to report to New Santhalos to become a Page.

Deklitch set off at once, his rudimentary ability to read helped him follow signs south and west towards New Santhalos. When he reached that city, he applied to become a Page, and after an assessment process, which involved speed (to get work from Compendiumist to Compendiumist as quickly as possible), memory (to recall where all the Compendiumist offices were) and strength tests (to carry several loads of parchments, quills and other objects), Deklitch was accepted as a Page.

After a while, Dek impressed the researchers enough to be given opportunity to revise entries that needed updating, and then in time to carry out his own research, under the guidance of a senior member of the team. Deklitch worked long and hard at this work, and in time presented entries that were accepted into the Compendium.

During these early days, Deklitch had a scribe with him, who would translate Dek's semi literate writings into a form that was readable. During this time, Dek and his scribe made their first trip north, to the land of the Remusians, in order to research the Paxen. While there, Dek had his first encounter with a talentless 'poet' named Sordoc.

Sordoc quickly established himself as a bane to Dek's existance. Sordoc believed he was the greatest poet ever to walk the surface of Caelereth, and had seemingly attached himself to Dek, to the youth's chagrin. Sordoc proceeded to give scrolls of his writings to Deklitch and insisted that the youth send the works to the Compendium for publication. The scrolls made their way into a nearby fire. Over the next few years, Sordoc continued to cause problems for Dek, although Sordoc's high volume poems gave the youth ample warning ahead of time to avoid the poet should he wish.

Sordoc's presence made life difficult for Deklitch, as even on occasions when Dek was in a place, if Sordoc was also in that place, he would greet Deklitch as they the two were old friends. Depending on the antics of Sordoc, Deklitch could occasionally find himself forcibly removed from cities and villages as a result. Deklitch was raised to be polite to all, and so he suffered Sordoc without too much complaint, despite the urgings of others.

Dek was able to develop his writing abilities and to travel further afield, including to the former lands of the Kyranian Kingdom and to the Ice Coast and the lands of the Kuglimz in northern Santharia. In time, Dek got the news that he was waiting for, he was an official apprentice and he was able to start on his masterwork, which would see him advance further into the ranks of the Compendium. Deklitch headed north once more, to the land of the Kuglimz, and then even further north. He had heard tales of a massive whirlpool at the heart of Eight Winds Bay, home to the Blessed Sea Elves, the Arthyrón as well as Blue Druids. Initially basing himself at the Banshee Crest, in time, Dek went further north by boat, curtesy of some of these elves. He became an honoured guest amongst these elves who found his human ways a delight, and he set to work, discovering the truth of the Bay.

He also discovered many new things about these elves that weren't previously included in the Compendium about them, but his mentors in the academy wanted him to focus on getting the work on Eight Winds Bay finished, and then to work on other things. Dek followed their advice, but he did make the occasional trip south to find out what he could about games from Santharia as well as the city and academy of Ximax. While, searching for details of games, Deklitch found himself passing through the city of Naios in Xaramon Province. While meeting with the owner of the Red King inn, he encountered a young merchant, just a few years older than himself. Each felt they recognised the other, and suddenly realization hit Deklitch ... this was the young boy who generously gave Deklitch coins years earlier. They reconnected and became fast friends, a friendship that extended to the merchant's young nephew, as well. Now, Deklitch has a place to stay while in Naios, if he doesn't want to stay in the Red King Inn ... at the home of Cyradin Lawabel and Raworaan Chesabalt.

Today, Dek would be found searching for the truth somewhere on Sarvonia, adventuring with others, staying with compendiumists, or at his little hut on the shores of Eight Winds Bay, just on the outskirts of Silven where he is known to the local elves as "Styáey'isyrór" or Elf Friend, due to the amount of time he's spent amongst them. No matter what he does in his life, Dek will never forget his origins as a Black Butterfly Rover, or his dedication to seeking the truth, no matter the cost.

Weapons
Deklitch has a pair of knives that he made while part of the Black Butterfly Rovers. These are small, sharp and don't quite match with each other. He knows to stab with them, but he's also aware that they aren't much use against just about any other weapon ... so he generally makes sure he doesn't get into armed conflict.

Possessions:
Dek travels relatively light. He carries his paperwork identifying him as an Apprentice within the Compendium, as well as certifying his identity to other members of the Compendium spread across the Sarvonian continent, should he need their help. In addition, he carries parchments and quills for his work for the compendium, each stored in its own compartment with Dek's pack. Dek's pack is made of the leather of a kyrattin and tied with drawstrings. Also in the pack are some trail rations and a water flask, maps of Sarvonia, as well as snippets from the Compendium that enable him to search out more things to discover.

Familiar
Sordoc the Great is a 'poet' who believes that his skills are far greater and more impressive than they actually are. Due to his mistaken belief, he believes that everyone deserves to hear him sing, watch him dance and listen to his poetry. He has been the bane of Deklitch's existence especially since Sordoc heard that Dek works for the compendium. Dek is too polite to tell Sordoc to 'get lost' and so has to put up with the poet's presence from time to time. Fortunately for Dek, Sordoc doesn't know (yet) of Dek's house on Eight Winds Bay, and so he can remain there in relative peace and quiet.

Just for the historical record ...

Name: Deklitch Hardin

Gender: Male

Age: 14

Race: Human

Tribe: Erpheronian

Occupation: Entertainer

Title: Truth Seeker

Overview: Born Erpheronian and raised as a Black Butterfly Rover, Dek has a zest for life and a love of risk and challenge. Possessing both acrobatic and singing talents, Dek has long been a favourite and popular performer amongst the Rovers. His overconfidence has curtailed his acrobatic feats somewhat as it has resulted in him suffering injuries to his ankles. Fortunately, he has his singing to fall back on, and he uses this to feed the rush he gets from performing.

Appearance:
   Height: 1 Ped, 1 Fore, 3 Palmspans

   Weight: 1 Pygge

   Hair Colour: Aeruillin Red

   Eye Colour: Barsa Dusk (grey)

   Physical Appearance:
Dek's short red hair, piercing grey eyes and freckled light skin tone suggest his ancestry is Erpheronian and this assessment can be backed up by the profile he presents to the world around him. His current height of just over one ped suggest he'll come close and may even surpass the average height of Erpheronian males. All of this speaks volumes of the man he is in the process of becoming as he goes through the changes associated with adolescence. Among the changes that is occurring as he goes through adolescence are the changes to his voice. When he was younger, his voice was firmly in the soprano range when singing. Nowadays, it is warbling uncertainly between his boyish soprano and the tenor he seemed destined to become.

He has been an acrobat within the Black Butterfly Rovers since early childhood. This vocation has strengthened Dek physically and resulted in Dek gaining a well toned and muscular body. His acrobatic endeavours have also resulted in Dek keeping his hair cut short so it doesn't get in his eyes while performing or practising his routines.  Dek has his black butterfly tattoo on his right arm, just below his shoulder blade.

Dek can sometimes be seen limping due to injuries he suffers from accidents during his acrobatic feats. While performing, Dek is happy and friendly and has a smile on his face, a twinkle in his eye and laughter on his lips. He is energetic and lively and a bundle of energy who is never afraid to put his best foot forward, whether that is his left or his right foot, he isn't sure yet.

   Clothing:
      Day to Day
Dek wears the bright clothes associated with the children who are part of the Black Butterfly Rovers. In Dek's case, he wears a strata yellow, gnastheen and uderza blue coloured short sleeve loose shirt that is big enough for him to grow into. He also wears adlemirene coloured leather pants. He managed to earn enough money to buy himself a pair of good shoes which he wears while not performing or practising his craft. Dek also has a cloak that he purchased. When the weather turns cold, he wraps himself in his cloak to keep warm. His cloak is aeruillin red and korwyn in color and is worn whenever he travels through cold regions.

      Performances
When performing or practising, Dek wears a tight colourful shirt and trousers that allow for ease of movement and is distraction free.

Personality:
Confident in his own abilities, Dek goes into most situations with the strong belief that he can achieve anything he sets his mind to. This confidence is heightened when it comes to the area of acrobatics or singing. Dek is always pushing his body and voice to its limits, and beyond, a fact that has seen him out of performance for periods of time. At these times, he is morose and isolates himself from others, not keen to wait until he has completely healed before returning to his life as an acrobat and singer.

The biggest regret in his life has been his very limited knowledge of his mother and his father's refusal to talk about her to him. He recalls very little of her, and throughout the years, his father has mostly refused to talk to Dek about her, although he has started doing so in recent times. Dek doesn't blame his father for being reluctant to talk about her. He just wants to know about her so he can move on to better times down the track and have a renewal of his own life, the renewal promised by his belief in Nehtor.

Apart from the times he is unable to perform due to injury, Dek is happy, friendly and very keen to be as helpful as possible to others. When he is the midst of performance he is contented and gives it his all.

Strengths and Weaknesses:

   Strengths:
Equally skilled with both hands - Where most of the children and adults around him prefer to use either the right or left hand (mainly the right hand), Dek is able to use both hands with equal skill. For as long as he can remember, he has used his dagger in either hand, has completed tasks around the Black Butterfly Rovers with either hand and has begun acrobatic performances leading with either his left or right hand. In acrobatic performances, where others rely on him to be starting on a particular foot/hand, this has caused problems and some injuries as it results in him not quite being in the right place at points in the performance.

Trained Acrobat - Since a young boy, Dek has been training as an acrobat and tumbler. Starting off with simple tumbles and turns, it wasn't long before he was graduated to more complicated tricks including more complicated partner and group tumbles, balancing acts, swings and human pyramids. Sometimes, an added level of risk is added in with the use of knifes in the performances. As an acrobat, he is also skilled at climbing trees and walls and at balancing on narrow surfaces. This training has two additional benefits for him. Although he has neither the strength nor the endurance of an adult, his strength and endurance is greater than that which would be expected of a youth of his age.

Trained to fight with the Knife - The Black Butterfly Rovers train all their members in how to use the knife to defend themselves in the event that they are attacked. Dek is no different to that. He is not very skilled in the use of the dagger to defend himself, but so far he has managed to avoid getting killed.

Fast Runner - If Dek is caught in a dangerous situation, his first act tends to be to run away. Growing up in the Black Butterfly Rovers, he proved himself to be quite good at running, winning many of the races that were held between the children. Due to his limited skill with his daggers as a weapon and their extremely short reach, running away has proven to be an effective strategy for him.

Singer - As well as being trained in the skills of an acrobat, Dek has also been taught how to sing a variety of popular songs by the Rovers. He is able to sing with or without the accompaniment of music or other singers. The other Rovers, especially his teachers, have commented favourably about his singing voice. Along with the other changes associated with adolescence, his voice is changing from soprano to tenor, which has brought a new dimension to his singing together with a range of new songs.

   Weaknesses:
Overconfident - Dek believes that there is no acrobatic feat and no song that is beyond him. He has taken risks that are above and beyond his capabilities as both an acrobatic and a singer. Outside of the Black Butterfly Rovers, he is likely to attempt to use both of these skills learned and honed within the Rovers to achieve his objectives.

As a result, the sprain flares up from time to time, and this impacts on his ability to perform his acrobatic tricks or to run from trouble.

Thrill seeker - Dek craves the rush that comes from trying new and dangerous things including singing in front of different audiences. This resulted in him taking risks that were beyond him while a member of the acrobatic section of the Black Butterfly Rovers. It also sees him seeking out new experiences and challenges.

Regrets, he's had a few - The biggest regret that Dek has in his life is that he doesn't know much about his mother. This is compounded by the fact that his father and even other Rovers have refused to talk about her. Dek wants to find out all he can about her and has followed a variety of different leads on her background. This has resulted in him spending time on what could be a futile search, time that could be better spent elsewhere and on other things. It has also resulted in him asking questions of people ... questions that some would rather not be asked, and which have, on occasions resulted in him being injured.

Religion:
Dek's religious observations and beliefs were formed by his father and the rest of the Black Butterfly Rovers. He believes in Avá and her twelve gods, especially Nehtor.

History:
   Birth
"Father, I have brought you the beer you wanted," Dek said, putting the mug down in front of him, "and the fruit, now, you promised me you would tell me of my mother and of my birth."

"Your mother and your birth," his father replied after a long pause during which time he put some of the fruit in his mouth, "indeed I did, my boy, indeed I did. Listen to me ... and listen good ... for I won't repeat myself. Your mother was a beautiful woman. I had no idea who she was at the time ... just that her house was fancy, much like herself. Unknown to me, she was a lesser aristocrat, and our activities would have implications for her. The Rovers were performing in Astran at the time, I was a musician and I was exploring the city when I came across her. We hit it off straight away and we became very close during the two weeks the Rovers remained there. You were conceived during those two weeks. Being unaware of who she was, and that she was now pregnant, I left with the Rovers for other cities."

Dek's father paused and then took a swig of the ale, before continuing, "Fourteen months later, we were in Astran again, and she and I met once more. She was as beautiful as ever, only now she had an addition ... you, Dek. You were almost 6 months old ... and her illegitimate heir. She was being disowned as she refused to give you up for adoption. She told me then that she was a minor noblewoman, promised in marriage to a Duke from those parts. She had minor lands, as well, and if you had been considered a legitimate heir ... you would have inherited them."

Dek's father took another swig of the ale, before continuing, "I was a nobody, and as I was your father, you were illegitimate. Along with me, she brought disgrace down on her family and on the family of the Duke. She was to be disowned. Following the tradition of the Black Butterfly Rovers, I offered to take her and you with us. She was uncertain, but she ended up accepting the offer and that began your association with the Black Butterfly Rovers," his father paused at that point, and said, "If you don't mind, I'd like to be alone with my memories ... I promise you ... more stories later, including how she died."

Dek nodded and left his father, "Hey Dek," that was another of his fellow acrobats, "Want to train?  I've got a new part of the act."

Dek grinned suddenly, and he seemed younger, "Of course, lead on."

* * *

   Early Days
"Dek," said the old woman, "stop gathering wool and pay attention, what I have to say is important. The lessons learned in the past should be followed in the present so we don't repeat the same mistakes they made. Take for example ..."

"Dek," she said again, "what's the matter?"

"Did you know my mother?" Dek asked, "I was speaking to father the other night, and he promised to tell me more stories about her, including how she died. I am curious, but I don't want to intrude myself on his thoughts."  'I also wish I had known her' he thought.

"I remember well the day when your father brought your mother and you into our lives, Dek," She replied, "your father was enthralled by her, that we could tell quite easily. She would smile at him, and he would do whatever she wanted. We were unsure whether her influence would be a good one for us. She was nobility, after all, and the nobility and the Rovers don't exactly see eye to eye on too many things. However, our concerns proved groundless. She agreed to get the tattoo, hers was on her right shoulder. Whether she danced, sang, acted, taught or wrote, she gave her all for us."

"Her right shoulder," Dek repeated, looking at his right upper arm where his tattoo had been placed.

"Yes, that's where it was put," the old woman said, nodding.

"Three years she was with us," the aged crone said sadly, "I remember her last day with us as though it were yesterday. She was returning from a nearby lake. It was a freak accident. A horse got lose and went berserk. It lashed out towards her with its front legs, knocking her to the ground and striking her head on a jagged rock. She died before our healers could get to her. Your father blamed himself, still does today, for her death."

She fell silent at that and Dek knew instinctively there was more to the story and asked "Why does father blame himself for her death?"

"Your father was responsible for ensuring the horses were secured at that time, Dek," she answered, "He hadn't checked that horse before then, he was on his way to it. He hasn't been assigned to that duty since.  He couldn't do it."

"You mean that he's lived for all these years with that guilt," Dek asked.  His thoughts were in turmoil, "But that goes against everything he taught me we stand for and everything that we believe in, as Black Butterfly Rovers we're meant to be looking forward to the renewal of the new day, to a better future."

"We are, Dek," the crone put a gentle hand on his cheek, "but it isn't always as easy as the words suggest.  Now, you know about her death, anything else you want to know?"

"No thanks," Dek replied, "I'm good, for now."

"Well then, why don't you go out and practice, you've got a talent in what you do, you know," she said.

Dek nodded, and left, her words tumbling through his mind, and they continued to tumble, even while he was tumbling through the air.

* * *

   Sing ... Sing a Song
Dek waited impatiently to start singing. The acrobatic performance earlier in the night had gone without a hitch and Dek was waiting in the wings for the fortune teller to finish her part of the proceedings. When she had finished it, he moved out and began his song,

"When I was just a little bitty boy just finished crawlin' on all fours,
I used to sneak into Rover Nancy's Carriage for an hour or maybe more,
She was visited by nobles and peasants as well 'n' merchants, some with bald heads
They paid her silverbards, and tried ta keep pace with Nancy in her big carriage bed."

The song continued, and the audience clapped and cheered, and Dek finished it with a flourish and a bow to the audience. Nancy came and stood alongside Dek, and hugged him fondly, before saying to the audience, "he's only kidding folks, I charge goldbards, not silverbards, and I promise you I now check the entire carriage before we start."

The audience laughed at that, and Dek's face was now redder than his face as he hurriedly left.

   The Great Mother Hunt
'Astan, we are back in Astan,' Dek thought as he walked into the town, ready to spread the word about the Rovers. His mind was awash with thoughts and they tumbled over each other in his attempt to express them. 'This was where my parents met', he realised, 'maybe I can ...' Any attempt to find out more about his mother from his father or from the older generation amongst the Rovers had proved pointless. They weren't talking about it any more. He knew enough though that she was from here and that she was a lesser noble of some kind, so he decided to do some research of his own.

He turned up into a fancy looking part of the city and walked around, listening and watching. A noble, in a fancy looking carriage turned his nose up at Dek as he sped past. "Get out the way you layabout!" shouted the driver at Dek who dove out of the way, splattering his clothes with what Dek hoped was mud, but based on the smell probably wasn't. At least his acrobatics came in handy, as he quickly got back to his feet again.

Dek kept on walking into that part of the city, trying to work out what he'd do. There, ahead of him, were some kids, older than him, fancier than him, but still.

"I'm looking for the duke's house," Dek said to them.

"Sirs," one of the other youths said without looking up at Dek.

      "I'm sorry, I don't understand," Dek replied.

"You call your betters sirs, knave," the same youth said, not looking at Dek, "and from the smell, I can only assume that we are definitely your betters."

"Sirs, my mother was the daughter of the duke. She and my father met twelve or so years ago, he took her and me to the Rovers, and I grew up as a Rover, sirs. Please, I just want to know more about her, sirs. She died a number of years ago," Dek said.

The other youths all looked at Dek, their expressions growing grim, and Dek looked back at them, not knowing whether to stay or to run. They did not look happy.

"Knave, the duke had one daughter," the same youth said, "my mother. She is still alive, knave. I am sick of people doing things like this, knave. Attempting to buy into our fortune."

"I don't want a family fortune, sir," Dek said, "I only want to know about my mother. Can I see your mother? Or the duke, sir?"

The other youths exchanged a knowing look, and the one who seemed to be doing the talking for them, said, "Sure, we'll take you to the duke, knave. Come with us."

Dek smiled, and said, "Thank you, sirs. My name is Deklitch Hardin, but most people call me Dek."

"We'll call you knave, knave," the spokesman for the group said and the youths all surrounded Dek, "come on, let's go."

This was the first time that Dek felt any kind of concern about this, but by then, of course, it was too late for him to do anything ... and besides, he was being taken to see the duke.

They led him up towards one of the fancy houses, and then beyond it. They eventually reached what seemed to be a dead end alley, and all but the spokesman remained at the open end of it.

      "I don't understand," Dek said, "the duke isn't ..."

That was as far as Dek got, as the spokesman for the group delivered a punch into Dek's midriff, doubling the younger boy over. Then, he knocked Dek to the ground. And punched him in the face. Dek tried to get away, but it was no use. Eventually, the older boy stopped.

"There's more of that for you, knave, if you continue on with this questioning. The duke only had one daughter. Only one," he lifted his hand to punch Dek again, but instead pushed him down into the ground, "can't waste my time here any more. Come on, let's go." The group of youths left.

Dek's face and stomach were sore and he knew his face was bleeding. Dek couldn't move without pain. He had no idea how long it had been that he was lying there when he heard her voice.

"Well then, what have we got here?" Dek saw that the voice belonged to a middle aged woman with a pleasant smile.

"My ... name ... is Dek," he gasped.

"Dek, you are in a bad way," she said, and as Dek lost consciousness, he heard her speak, seemingly from a distance.

Dek woke up and found himself in a giant bed. He had a bandage around his head and his stomach, and he heard ... he heard the woman who had found him sing a tune that he remembered from his childhood, one his mother would sing to him.

Dek joined in with her on one of the last verses, "And you will grow up someday, Will be brave at heart; On a steed will ride away To fulfill your part."

The woman looked at Dek, her eyes opened wide with wonder momentarily, but she quickly recovered.

"You know that song then," she commented softly.

"My mother sang it to me when I was younger," he said, "before she died. I remembered it. Did you know her? She was the daughter of the duke."

"The duke only has one daughter," she said, "and that daughter is still alive."

"But ...," Dek protested, she held up a hand.

"Dek, listen to me, the Duke had one daughter, that daughter is still alive. You are mistaken, please drop it," she said, "you need to concentrate on getting better."

Dek nodded, and then said, "how do you know the song that my mother taught me? No one else from the Rovers know it."

"It is common in these parts, Dek," she explained, "part of being Erpheronian."

"I feel I recognise your voice," Dek told her, "from long ago. Almost as though as ..." his face drained of colour, "you ... you sang it to me, as well as my mother."

"Dek, you have been hurt. You are imagining things. The first I have ever seen you was when I found you outside. Believe me, leave it at that. Don't go into things that you don't understand, that you can't understand," she said.

Dek looked at her, not believing what he was hearing, "I only want to know who my mother was. I don't want anything else."

"I'm sorry, I can't help you," Dek fell into sleep again, but as he did so, he heard a man's voice, "we had to do that, Canissa ..."

When Dek next gained consciousness, he was in the Rovers' camp. He had people looking down on him, concern on their faces, his father amongst them.

"We were so worried, Dek," his father said.

"I'll be fine," Dek replied, "I think I found where mother came from."

His father's face grew weary at that, "forget it Dek, I don't know what you think you found out, but just forget it. I've already lost your mother, I don't want to lose you as well."

"Father," Dek said, but then his father gripped him.

"This is for your own good, Deklitch Hardin. Listen to me. Forget about trying to find out about your mother," his father told him.

"Departure in twenty minutes," announced one of the other Rovers.

Dek looked around in confusion, "but we haven't performed yet."

"We are going, Dek," his father said, "and forget about trying to find it out."

Dek nodded, but silently he told himself, regardless of cost, regardless of anything, he would track down his mother's past.

* * *

   Old Injury
They were attempting a new trick and quite naturally, Dek wanted to do the most difficult part of it, part that required tumbling and leaping with a knife in each hand. He felt the thrill go through his body when he offered to take on that role.

He started, weaving in and out around the others, his body a constant wave of motion. This was the first time they had done it with the knives, previously they had just focused on the movements, until they got the moves correct. Now they were doing it with the knives and so far it was going fine. Now it was up to the part that was similar to previous versions of it, the part where Dek had suffered that first injury some seven years earlier.

It was, in theory, a simple thing to do, that is if Dek did it the way it had been practised. He never understood why he had to start off on the right foot or right hand for these tricks, it really didn't make any difference to him. To him, it just depended on what hand or foot came down at that point, and this time, he reached out with his left hand. The other child swore softly and had to adjust slightly, which didn't quite give the power that was needed to enable Dek to leap to the next part of the performance.

The event of seven years earlier flashed through his mind. Of course he was younger than and couldn't leap as far as he could now, but those events came unbidden. Despite himself, he felt the slightest tingling of fear go through him as he realized it was perhaps a bit far to go before the next child. That child was desperately trying to adjust, but wasn't able to, and Dek came down hard on his left ankle. Pain shot through his body, as Dek crumbled to the ground.

"Dek," the cry went up almost in unison from everyone watching, his father, the other men, the women, the other children, all cried out and came to him. That was what it meant to be a part of this group, they were all in it together, they all watched out for each other.

A healer inspected his ankle gravely, and said, "He has injured the same ankle again.  He should sit out of performances for the next three months."  Dek felt sadness go over him at the pronouncement, 'three months, she might as well have said forever', he thought to himself bitterly.

"It should have been your right hand, Dek," the first child, a dwarf said to him, "like we practised, your right hand, not your left hand.  I'm sorry you are injured, however."

"Thanks," Dek said shortly, already wanting the security of being alone to engulf him as he dealt with this, the latest in a series of injuries.

* * *

   On his own
Where he was, what town or city, he didn't know, but the red haired youth watched as the group entered a building that had the telltale signs of being a tavern. Dek was sent here to see what he could find out about this place, and to see if the Black Butterfly Rovers could buy some food. Dressed in his brightly covered travelling clothes, with his cloak about his shoulders, he looked much like any child who lived here.

That last trick from five months ago was taking longer to heal than he was used to, and he was getting restless. He desired the thrill of being an acrobat again. He was starting to feel that he needed to strike out on his own for a while, and this place seemed as though it might be suitable. He did have the singing to fall back on as well, afterall, and he did know a variety of songs that were meant to be popular in taverns.

Taking a deep breath, he walked towards the doors over the tavern. He would never forget his roots as a Black Butterfly Rover, he promised himself that. Even though he might be something else in name, he would always be a Rover at heart, no matter what life threw at him.

Weapons: Dek has matching daggers, one tied to each of his shoes.  He helped to make them out of scrap metal and has used them as part of his performance.

Possessions:
Dek has a small, Black Butterfly Rovers sack on his back that holds his small number of meagre possessions when they are not in use. He is wearing the colourful clothes that are standard to the children of the Black Butterfly Rovers together with the cloak and shoes he purchased. Before leaving for here, he was given a water skin so he wouldn't get thirsty and he managed to secure some fruit on his way here as well. Finally, he has his daggers, which are mostly used as part of his acrobatic performance or for cutting food, but which can also be used as weapons if needed.

OK, your CD is great! I only found a few minor things to fix, and then a mod should be along to check you out for possible approvals. Excellent job, and I look forward to seeing you play this character. grin Thumb up

Thank you for your check Morden.

I have gone through and made the changes you recommended and fixed up a couple of other things I saw in it.  The changes are in Maroon.

Regarding the shoes, my thought was that Dek just had the shoes when he was in the world outside of the Rovers.  I am happy to remove all mention of the shoes throughout the CD if you'd rather.

No, I think the shoes are okay. You just hadn't mentioned that he had them before then, so I wanted to make sure that you knew that fact about the Rovers. But, it does say that some do wear shoes, so you can definitely have shoes.

Thanks for bringing Dek up, Kalina.

Anyway, the changes I wanted to make to Dek have now been completed. I added a strength and weakness, changed a couple of other strengths and weaknesses a bit, and added bits here and there to his history, personality and appearance sections. All changes have been coloured.

I also changed his occupation and added in an overview on him. So, he is ready for comments, and hopefully another set of approvals.

My only qualm, spell out the "1" which is in your appearance section.

Regrets, he's had a few - The biggest regret that Dek has in his life is that he doesn't know much about his mother. This is compounded by the fact that his father refused to talk about her. Dek wants to find out all he can about her and has followed a variety of different leads on her background.

How does this play out as a weakness? It seems to be just a section of history really, not disadvantage to him, at least in the way it is worded.

I think I've explained it better now in the weaknesses section. I have also given an example of it in the history. Basically ... he spends his time in what could be a futile search, asking questions of people who would rather keep the past in the past and silent. In short, it is forcing him to act in a certain way, expending energy and time on a search that could ultimately be futile and put him in further danger, particularly if he asks the wrong questions to the wrong people.
