Deklitch's Black Butterfly Rover Camp

Overview

Black Butterfly Rover Camps are the ultimate word in mobile homes! That is because the Rovers literally take their homes with them as they move around Southern Sarvonia. The Rovers that Deklitch Hardin is attached to frequents the northern provinces of Santharia, as far south as Manthria. The usual practice of the Black Butterfly Rovers is to find an area close to the city which they are visiting, that has enough space for their wagons, a communal fireplace, an area for their horses to graze, an area for them to ply their crafts and perform and perhaps a stream for the natural beauty and cleaning/recreational uses such a resource would provide.

Location of the building
Currently, Deklitch's Black Butterfly Rover Camp is situated in Southern Santharia within the United Kingdom of Santharia. Although the Black Butterflies make their camps throughout Santharia, Deklitch's camp is currently in the province of Nermeran about ten - fifteen minutes walk away from the city of Nyermersys.

As the Rovers want people to come to their campsites for their shows, it is in their best interests to make sure that the entrances to their campsites are easily accessible. As a result, access to the performance area, together with Rover Nancy's carriage, is made easy for visitors.

Description
Outdoors:
When approaching the Black Butterfly Rovers Camp, one would firstly notice a group of wagons and one carriage that seem to be set up around something that could well be a firepit or something along those lines. The carriage, bright pink in colour, is quite different to the others in terms of appearance. Signage proclaims to all that can read that it is 'Rover Nancy's Carriage' and Rover Nancy is often found standing outside her carriage encouraging men, all men, to come and 'visit her'. Of course, there are times when she is not standing outside her carriage ... at those times she is normally either plying her trade, sleeping or eating with the rest of the Rovers. Rover Nancy's Carriage has the same dimensions as the wagons.

Two of the wagons are grey in colour. These have images and words on them indicating that these are food and store rooms for the Rovers.

The other wagons are brown in colour. These have images of beds on them and are used for by the Rovers to sleep in of an evening.

The wagons surround a fire pit where the Rovers gather to eat and talk at day's end. This area is also used for teaching, discussion, sing alongs, story telling and other activities amongst the Rovers. This is also where the Black Butterfly Rovers get their tattoos when they join the troupe.

Each wagon has the same dimensions, regardless of its colour and purpose. At one end of the wagon is the platform on which the driver sits when the Rovers are moving to a new location. This platform is wooden. Along one length of the wagon there is a door about half way along the wall. This door opens outwards, but is closed most of the time. Along the opposite side of each wagon there are two windows, one at either end of the long wall.

Garden
As the Rovers take their houses with them, they don't have a garden as such, instead they prefer to use the natural surroundings of the land around them. Native plants as well as water and the local fauna make up the natural environment around their camp.

Indoors:
Rooms
Each of the wagon colours used have a different function to perform in order to meet the housing requirements of the Black Butterfly Rovers. As the Rovers sleep in the wagons at night, and travel in them during the daytime hours, the wagons need to perform a variety of services.

The pink carriage houses Rover Nancy. It has a large double bed, luxuriously appointed with pillows, sheets and blankets as needed. This bed is placed along one of the narrow sides of the carriage and is joined to that side of the carriage.

The grey wagons both hold the Rovers array of cooking equipment, food stuffs and other equipment that they need to use in order to exist. They carry dried food stuffs with them that won't spoil easily which are supplemented by fresh fish caught from streams nearby the place the Rovers camp and meats and breads acquired from nearby marketplaces. They also have containers that carry drinks that are enjoyed by the Black Butterfly Rovers.

Furniture:
As the Black Butterfly Rovers are wanderers, who carry their lives in their carriages, their furniture but sturdy. Also, as the carriages are quite often on the go, the items of furniture need to be bolted down. Beds double as chairs for when the Rovers do work. Shelves are built into the sides of these two wagons in order to carry things and tables are nailed into the side of some wagons, or into the floorboards to prevent them from flying around while the rovers are on the move.

NPCs
Each Butterfly Rovers Troupe have a Rover Nancy, and Deklitch's is no exception. Without fail, these women are loving, caring and giving individuals who provide the men who come to see them everything their hearts desire and more. Rover Nancy's have the occupation of making men ... all men who come to see them ... at ease and willing to share things with her.

Adults:- there are a number of adults in the troupe, with a full range of skills and abilities including cooking, teaching, fortune telling, singing, acting, dancing and making products. Most adults are also given responsibilities around the camp including caring for the horses, seeing to the wagons and so forth. They are also, of course, responsible for the instruction and training and safety of the younger members of their troupe.

Children:- there are a number of children from a number of different tribes and races. All have found a home in the Rovers. As with the adults, the kids contribute to the successful running of the camp, while learning specific skills useful to the Rovers and performing in the nightly shows that are put on for the nearby city. Dressed in brightly coloured clothes, the children of the Black Butterfly Rovers go into the local settlements in order to advertise their performances.

Thanks for reading through it, Thaelel. I've considered each of your points, and while there are some I agree with, there are some I disagree with. I've raised my points of disagreement in the colour of orange throughout this post.

Why an 'are' there? There is only one Deklitch Hardin, not many of them, thankfully.

Good point, now why didn't I pick that up, will be fixed up

No, I mean 'not outside'. She is outside her carriage or she is not outside her carriage ... I chose to use not outside rather than inside.

No, I mean fauna ... I've already talked about flora (the native plants) and now I'm talking about the animals. :D

Seems you are right. I was confusing 'The Rovers that are attached to Deklitch' with 'The Rovers that Deklitch is attached to'. Sorry! Roll Eyes

The others are all standard in terms of size and other features. That is the standard way that the carriages are produced. The pink one does not have the same features and is therefore 'less standard' as it was modified than the other ones. In this case, 'less standard' = 'different', but I prefer 'less standard' to 'different' in this case..

I think the ways to descrribe something that is not standard are 'not standard', 'above standard', 'below standard', and 'not as uniform'.

No, I mean 'not outside'. She is outside her carriage or she is not outside her carriage ... I chose to use not outside rather than inside.

Once again, I prefer my way of describing it to yours.

Ok...

No, I mean fauna ... I've already talked about flora (the native plants) and now I'm talking about the animals. :D

They decorate carriages with animals? Ah well, some people are stranger than others  :D!

Altogether an excellent "home". Well done!

Why, thank you.

No problem, happy to do it any time.

No, they don't decorate the carriages with animals or plants.

People in an ordinary house would have a garden with flowers and trees and so forth as well as animals that live in those things/use them etc. The Rovers don't live in an ordinary house. So, the native plants that live there can be considered their garden outside of their carriages/camp. Along with the animals that would live there anyway.

I'm not sure where you got the idea that they decorate their carriages with animals and plants from, because I most definitely did not mean to say that, and I am unclear on where you get the idea from that I did say that. Maybe you could explain where I did say that so that I can address it.

Sorry, looks like it because of the following on from the previous sentence. Perhaps you should put 'The natural environment around their camp is made up of...' to avoid the confusion of readers like me.  blush

Why are they using carriages and not wagons?

They take all their belongings with them, and I would imagine that beds, furniture, food etc would add up to quite a bit.

I might be wrong about this, but isn't a carriage quite light while a wagon is more the big and heavy type?

The reason why I chose carriages was because I thought it said carriages in the entry on the BBR. I've just rechecked and see that it says wagons and caravans. Thanks for picking that up ... I'll get it fixed.

And it has now been fixed!
