Reading two series at once right now.  Rereading both, to be more accurate.

First is the Dragonlance Chronicles.  Just started Dragons of Winter Night.  When I was younger, I think these were my favourite books.  I loved them, and I haven't read them in over twenty years.

Second series is the A Song of Ice and Fire books, starting with A Game of Thrones.  I only discovered this series two years ago when I was given the DVD First Season of the HBO series.  I immediately fell in love and this has now become my favorite series.

It is because of GoT that I rebought the Dragonlance books.  It made me want to reread them.  But, truthfully, reading them again, I find them a bit juvenile for my adult tastes.  I suppose that was the target demographic that the books were aimed at, so I do not hold that against them.

GoT is the story that I wanted to write back when I was trying to write a novel.  It is based more in the realm of fantastic history than High Fantasy.  There are no Mages in Flowing robes and pointy hats, no elves, etc, (though there is one Dwarf :) ).  It does have magic, and it does have dragons, so the fantasy is there, but it is not a clear cut good vs evil story.  The characters are deep and well defined.  And it revolves around politics.  Who is backstabbing who.  And heroes die.  Villains thrive.  You really do get drawn in.

Oh, and I read the Horoscope, too.  Apparently people will be listening to views today.  Who knew?

Just finished The Martian by Andy Weir. Really good book.

Oh dearest Ryldor, dust thou know thy charm?; The clever smile soft upon thy face; Seem like a promise for to do no harm; Whilst I, enjoying thy tender grace; Should gaze in admiration at thy eyes; As azure as where highest heaven lay; Reflections of the clearest, truest skies; They seem to melt my very heart away!; And if thy lovely words were not as true; As thine eyes blue, still I'd believe thy claim; Of magedom. Magic turned a rosy hue; My cheeks. A spell thou cast upon this dame!; Thou art a most capricious scoundrel, yet; The sweetest gentlemen I've ever met.; ~ Rayne Avalotus

*SPOILERS FOR GAME OF THRONES*

I've been reading select chapters from the "Game of Thrones" books, managed to borrow them from a friend. Love all the greyjoy story-lines they missed out in the show and the Arya stuff was good to. So many changes, it's quite incredible. The books have a lot of value and I would recommend them if you've watched the show.

The Earth Sea Trilogy, almost finished. I always reread select chapters from The Wheel of Time as well. Not many books compare with that series, though I hear A Song of Fire and Ice does (game of thrones). I need to pick up the first book.

It's been all non-fiction of late.

What If?: Serious Scientific Answers to Absurd Hypothetical Questions by Randall Munroe. Gets super technical at times, but great fun if you're into that kind of stuff. Written by the guy who draws/writes the XKCD cartoon.

Proof: The Science of Booze by Adam Rogers. Helps to be a (in my case retired) lush.

The 38 Most Common Fiction Writing Mistakes by Jack Bickham. Just started this, but we'll see if it helps my writing here at Santharia any.
