Elf, Quaelhoirhim / Ylfferhim / Sanhorrhim

« on: December 29, 2005, 06:21:22 AM »

okay ppl here it goes.

Name:            Cherri Rowandyn
Nickname:      Yliasía Silarná (meaning moon-hair.)
Race:             Female Elf
Age:               162
Tribe:              Quaelhoirhim/Ylfferhim/Sanhorrhim
Occupation:     Student of Wind Magic
Title:               Elemental Mage

Appearance:

Cherri appears to be about 25 in human years, but is actually 162 in elven years and her life should end by the time she reaches the age of 575.  Her hair is the color of moonlight and is worn loose with several small braids throughout. Her eyes are a dark violet lit by an inner fire.  She stands just a little under two pegs and carries herself with a grace and beauty that belies the strength she possesses.  Her skin is soft and supple and the color of the purest white marble.  Her features are true to her blood lines and fit that of the perfect elf, or at least most humans would say.  She is usually garbed in a hunter green dress belted around her waist.  Along the edges of the sleeves of the dress as well as the collar there are blessings, pieces from the "O Lady Fair" prayer.  She usually wears a scarlet red cloak with hood during the colder seasons.  Attached to her belt are several pouches containing rare and common herbs.  Cherri wears a pair of light brown durable soft leather mid calf boots of remarkable craftsmenship.

Background:

Cherri is the daughter of Carolus and Irit Rowandyn.  Her father, Carolus, is a result from the mingling of two tribes:  The Sanhorrhim (his father's tribe) and The Quaelhoirhim (his mother's tribe).  Irit, Cherri's mother, is a full blood from the Ylfferhim tribe and traveled in her youth as a Bard to surrounding elven tribes to teach the children other elven tribal lore.

The story of how Cherri's parents met always hit that romantic streak in her and she loved to hear her mother sing the story.  While out walking with her mother one day while she was a child, Cherri asked her mother to sing this very story.  As she listened to her mother sing the images of the story floated through her mind.  Her mother, young and one of the more beautiful in her tribe was always a little different from the others.  Irit always wanted to travel, but not too far, and would never have admitted it to anyone for such a thing was unheard of.  Irit had been gifted with a beautiful singing voice and became a very talented bard.  Soon after aquiring her title, she set out to visit other tribes and teach the children of other tribal lores.  One bright sunny morning, Irit was traveling through the Zeiphyrian Forests on her way to Elving and humming the story she was thinking to tell the children there.  Usually she traveled with a group, but the group had decided to head toward Brinsley and she had wanted to go Elving.  Irit was lost in the story, which by this time she had began to fully sing instead of just hum, and took no notice of her surroundings.  Suddenly the wind shifted and an uneasiness filled Irit.  She stopped singing, the story dying in her throat.  All she had to protect herself was a small silver dagger at her waist which her fingers now itched towards.  Irit kept walking, her ears picking up every sound in the forest and her keen sight searching for the unseen danger she felt in her gut.  Without warning a small group, numbering only two or three, of lesser drakes appeared seemingly out of no where.  Irit stopped dead in the path she had been following and slowly drew her dagger so as not to attract too much attention using fast movements.  She tried to remember what she had learned about lesser drakes and at that moment her mind held nothing helpful.  The larger of the lesser drakes seemed to sense the fear building in Irit, and Cherri feeling her mother's fear faultered in her steps for a moment.  Cherri loved the story, but often forgot how real it seemed everytime she heard it.  The Drake drew closer still and Irit was ready to fight with her dagger if she should need to, but the need did not arise.  Just as the Drake lunged for Irit an arrow flew past her followed by two more finding their target.  Once wounded the Drakes fled back into the forest leaving Irit shaking and startled.  A male elf emerged from the shadows of the forest and bowed gracefully before her.  Irit stared at him in disbelief and forgot that she still had her dagger unsheathed.  The stranger smiled at Irit as he placed his bow across his back.  He introduced himself as Carolus of the Sanhorrhim and Quaelhoirhim Tribes.  Irit remembering herself quickly sheathed her dagger and curtsied before him and introduced herself.  Carolus inquired where it was she was heading and offered to escort her there himself since he was heading to Elving himself.  He was planning on opening a shop there since he had just came from Vontron to stay with the Quaelhorhim Tribe.  While walking he shyly admitted that he had been taking another way to Elving but had caught Irit's voice on the subtle wind and was determined to find out who the voice belonged to.  He had actually been following her for sometime, but had been afraid to approach her since he could tell she was lost in the story in which she had been singing until the Lesser Drakes appeared.  They talked the rest of the way to Elving.  Soon after Carolus began courting Irit and after only a few short months of courtship they were married.  As long as Cherri could remember her father would still ask her mother to sing.  Cherri had gone to sleep many nights hearing her mother's voice softly singing of the love she felt for her husband.

Cherri began to express an interest in magic at an early age.  It started with the whispers she heard as the winds blew through the forest while she was playing.  Sometimes if she listenend hard enough she could hear the whispers guiding her or warning her of a danger not yet know.  Since she was a child Cherri was taught how to use a bow, short swords and daggers by her father.  Her father grew up in both Vontron and the Zeiphyrian Forests.  Spending part of his childhood and into early adult hood with the Sanhorrhim tribe and the rest he will spend with the Quaelhoirhim tribe.  His father's family has a ship that Carolus and his family may use when need arises for such in Vontron.  As a child Cherri loved to play in the shadows of the Zeiphyrian Forest seemingly to disappear within them.  Cherri loved music and loved to sing.  She had been told that while she sang her audience could actually feel down to their core all the feelings of the story she sang and if she was passionate enough about the story she told images would often fade in and out of the listeners minds, much like when her mother would sing.  It didn't always happen and was more of a fluke than anything substantial.  Her father, being one of the best craftsmen in the region, became familar with many different types of people from all over the world. So Cherri began to work with her father running errands and doing other small tasks.  She met many different races of people and was intrigued by them all.  Cherri was never shy and loved to venture from The Zeiphur to The Quallian and back, but never alone.  As she grew older she became more interested in the magic the mages used to create the dual levels of the larger cities such as Elving.  Cherri would venture there occassionally and talk with the mages.  One suggested that she ask her father about attending school to study.  She mentioned this to her father and mother.  Her father agreed and decided to send her to The Twin Towers since it was the closest school.  Cherri has been studing at The Twin Towers since she was of an acceptable age.  And has recently passes her level four test and is now studing on a level five.

Personality:

Cherri is a kind and usually even tempered elf.  But be warned, she can be a force to be reckoned with, even if it is mostly in a passive agressive way.  Cherri enjoys helping people, which is why she makes an exceptional healer with herbs, and wants peace about her.  She likes adventure and enjoys traveling and meeting different races, but she also enjoys the tranquility of the forests.  Cherri is honest and blunt to the point that some have accused her of being unfeeling, but she is quite the opposite tho she will never let you know or see it.  There is something about her that sets her apart from others in her tribe, but no one can really say what it is.  Cherri is a romantic at heart, but is not so naive that she falls for very much.  In the romance department she has been way too busy to think much on it.  She doesn't trust easily, but is usually reliable unless something out of her control occurs and this is rare indeed.  She loves all well natured animals alike.  She also has a passion and love for the water, but has an equal fear of it as well and so has not pursued this avenue.

Weapons:

Belted on the right side of her hip is a silver dagger specially made for her by her father with two intwining dragons along the handle and an amythyst stone the color of her eyes rests in the pommel.  Along the double edged blade there are vines and leafart engraved.  Cherri carries a staff made of precious wood, from the Bolder Forest, her staff allows her to help focus her magic.  Her staff was purchased for her by her grandmother on her father's side in Vontron and sent to her The Twin Towers.

Jewelry:

Resting in the hollow of her seemingly delicate neck rest a necklace made of such sheer gold it seems to have been spun from the mists themselves.  Incrusted in this necklace are a multitude of sparkling gemstones from the Quallian Forest.  Around her head, to help hold her hair back from her face, she wears a gold headpiece inscribed with knotwork.  In the center front of this head piece there is a dark blue gemstone flanked on each side by two violet ones the same color as her eyes.  This headpiece came from her mother's side of the family and was a gift to her great grandmother.

Magic:

Conjure Wind, Reflection, Vanish, Confusion, Elightenment, Sense Aura, Shape Smoke, Wind Walking, Clap of Thunder, Cloak of Shadows, Insubstantial Shield, Spectral Sight, Static Trap, Telekinesis, Aura of Smothering,  Aura Sight, and Chimaera.

Spells regularly used:

Cherri as stated before has no real battle experience and thus doesn't know off hand what spells she will need most.  There are a few however that she has picked to work further on that she feels may come in handy later on.

Conjure Wind-this was the first spell she learned and Cherri has worked on building this spell from being a slight breeze to larger gusts of wind.  The large gusts she can not maintain for longer than a couple of minutes, but she is working on strengthening the duration.

Vanish-again this is a first level spell that Cherri has thought will be useful in the future and has worked very hard on this Illusion class spell.  If the harbor in Elving shall ever need protecting, Cherri hopes that her knowledge and skill in this area will help the other mages to hide the harbour.

Sense Aura-Cherri hopes to one day beable to tell how old or strong a being is using this spell.  Ever the planner, Cherri likes to know as much as she can about a potential threat and thought this would be very useful.

Clap of Thunder-this was one of the first offensive spells Cherri learned and seemed to have a natural knack for and so has become quite good at it.  She has been able to cast this spell on a group of 5-6 with excellent results, but has trouble with groups larger, usually missing anything outside the sixth target.

Cloak of Shadows-was a must for Cherri to learn and learn well.  Since she wishes to pursue being an Elemental Mage, hiding her strength from opponents helps to give her an edge.  Most see her and think she is weak and possesses little strength.  She prefers it this way.

Static Trap-again Cherri likes to know what is coming if she should ever be in a situation where she has to fight.  Cherri has not worked on this spell as much as some others, but she can cast this spells effectively enough.

Aura of Smothering-this spell can be very dangerous if casted by a very powerful mage and for long periods of time.  Cherri does not like the idea of taking another's life, but she is working on achieving this very thing if the need arises.  Cherri is not so innocent to know that sometimes it comes down to kill or be killed.  Currently she is able to extinguish fire and take the breath of a target for a few moments, but nothing more.

Chimaera-Cherri had to learn this spell is she ever wished to travel unaccompanied by her father or her father's friends.  Her father ever protective of his only child, and female at that, will not allow her to travel alone unless she is able to use this spell effectively.

Training:

Cherri is currently at a level 5 at The Twin Towers.

Strengths:

Cherri comes from bloodlines known for their magic.  She is a very skilled healer with herbs and learns quickly.  She is also a very promising elemental mage.  She has a determination and focus that is hard pressed to be matched by her fellow classmates.  Once she makes her mind up about something, she pours everything that she is into it to see it completed.  She is honest and tries to understand things and ideas that do not come naturally to her.

Weaknesses:

Cherri still has a great deal to learn before her and sometimes her magic doesn't last as long as she would like for it to.      While Cherri has known many people, they have mostly been people who wish her no real harm so she has little in the field battle knowledge.  Her temper can also cause her to act rashly without thinking of the consequences.  Since Cherri is an elf and very closely tied to the land, if she enters into a land that is very sick or dying she suffers pain and if in this land for long periods of time, it begins to affect her health as well.  While Cherri focuses intently and diligently in her studies, sometimes when she focuses too hard on something she can lose sight of things going on around her.  If she becomes overly frustrated sometimes there are adverse effects that occur around her for no apparent reason.  She doesn't mean for these adverse things to happen, such as a nearby planter cracking or breaking, and is trying to learn how to keep these things from happening. She has never figured out who the whispers belong to she hears in the winds, but has learned to listen carefully.

*Okay, have re-edited and added how her parents met and also changed her schooling a bit.  I also made her a Magic section and a list of current spells she has taken an extra interest in.  Please look back over.  Anyone else have to run multiple windows when creating their CD like I do.  I have three windows just in Santharian open.  :crazy           *

My comments are in crimson.

Name: Lady Cherri (called Cherri by friends)
Race: Female Elf
Age: 138
Tribe: Quaelhoirhim/Ylfferhim
Occupation: Mage
Title: Elemental Mage and Healer

Appearance:

Lady Cherri appears to be about 24 in human years, but is actually 138 in elven years. Her hair is the color of moonlight and is worn loose with serval small braids throughout. Her eyes are a dark violet lit by an inner fire. She stands about just a little under a peg and a half and carries herself with a grace and beauty that belies the strength she possesses. Its also not possible for her to be that short. Elves of her tribe stand at an average of two peds. She can either be slightly taller or slightly shorter than that, but half a ped is too great a difference. Her skin is soft and supple and the color of the purest white marble. Her features are true to her blood lines and fit that of the perfect elf, or at least most humans would say. She is usually garbed in a hunter green dress belted around her waist. Along the edges of the sleeves of the dress as well as the collar there are blessings embroidered. I don't know what you mean by blessings being embroidered into her dress. Please elaborate upon that. She usually wears a scarlet red cloak with hood during the colder seasons. Attached to her belt are several pouches containing rare and common herbs. Lady Cherri wears a pair of light brown durable soft leather mid calf boots of remarkable craftsmenship.

Background:

Lady Cherri is the daughter of Carolus and Irit Rowandyn. Her father, Carolus, is a result from the mingling of two tribes: The Goltherrhim (his father's tribe) and The Quaelhoirhim (his mother's tribe). Irit, Lady Cherri's mother, is a full blood from the Ylfferhim tribe. The Goltherrhim are extinct, so it is not possible for her father to be descended from them. Also, earlier you stated that Cherri is of the Quaelhoirhim tribe, yet now you say that she is descended from three tribes. Please list all of the tribes she is descended from at the top of the CD. It will not be possible for her to be descended from the Goltherrhim. Once a long time ago, Irit's people (meaning her ancestors) ventured into the Northern Sarvonia Continent to stay with relations in Injerin tribe after the Battle of the Winds to help restore the lands during the Years of cleansing. Irit's people became well respected as great healers and were given the titles of Lord or Lady. These titles have been passed down from generation to generation since. Only one or two of Irit's people made their way back to Southern Sarvonia. You cannot rewrite history with your CD. First of all, the Ylfferhim were not even a tribe during the War of the Chosen, nor are there any records of the Quaelhoirhim making a journey to aid the Injerin. Anyway, there really is no need for your CD to mention ancient history, as you only did so to have the title of Lady. Elves do not have lords or ladies, so if your char earned that title then she did so whilst in a human city. This also means that the titles of Lord and Lady could not have been passed down through the generations. Lady Cherri began to show signs that she possessed great potential at an early age. First it started with the whispers she heard as the winds blew through the forest while she was playing. Sometimes if she listenend hard enough she could hear the whispers guiding her or warning her of a danger not yet know. As she grew she studied the healing magik with her mother. What do you mean by healing magic? Currently three systems of magic exist: Ximaxian, Clerical, and Druidic. Each of these has magic that can heal, so please be more specific. Lady Cherri also began to study her grandfather's well detailed books on elemental magik. She could not have learned magic from a book. Her father, being one of the best craftsmen in the region, became familar with many different types of people from all over the world. He became very close friends with a very powerful human elemental mage. When the mage met Lady Cherri he told her father that he saw great potential in her. That she had the potential to do great and powerful deeds if she was tutored properly. I find it highly unlikely that a mage would randomly walk into a craftsman's workshop and tell him that his daughter possesses great potential. Anyone can learn magic if they are dedicated enough to do so. If anything, your char would have sought out a teacher, not the other way around. Lady Cherri ventured far from her home with the Quaelhoirhim tribe to study with her teacher, Urho Merten. Lady Cherri earned wages while being tutored by Urho. She ran extra errands, kept his house, tended his garden and after she had studied the healing arts a while longer she began to assist the local people. Healing those who were ill and restoring the land that needed help. Once again, what do you mean by the healing arts? Do you mean mundane means such as herbs or are you referring to magic? Remember, there is not a system dedicated entirely to healing. While she was not offically trained as a bard she had always loved music and singing and would occassionaly do so for special events. She had been told that while she sang her audience could actually feel down to their core all the feelings of the story she sang. Lady Cherri stayed with her teacher studying with him until he passed from this world. After her teachers passing she did as he instructed with his property and made her way back to Southern Sarvonia. Her teacher had given her a ship to help her reach her homeland again. Where was his home? You're saying that she returned to Southern Sarvonia yet you made no mention of her leaving. By the way, with a tutor she will learn much slower than she would at Ximax. Lady Cherri docked in Elving and paid to have her ship, The Lethargas, taken care of while she was absent. She made her way back to The Zeiphyrian Forests. This is the first time Lady Cherri has been home for well over 30 years.

Personality:

Lady Cherri is a kind and usually even tempered elf. But be warned, she does have have the blood the the Goltherrhim tribe running through her veins and can be a force to be reckoned with. Once again, she cannot be descended from the Goltherrhim. Anyway, she doesn't need to be descended from them to possess a temper. Lady Cherri enjoys helping people, which is why she makes an exceptional healer, and wants peace about her. She likes adventure and enjoys traveling and meeting different races, but she also enjoys the tranquility of the forests. Lady Cherri is honest and blunt to the point that some have accused her of being unfeeling, but she is quite the opposite tho she will never let you know or see it. There is something about her that sets her apart from others in her tribe, but no one can really say what it is. Lady Cherri is a romantic at heart, but is not so naive that she falls for very much. In the romance department she has been way too busy to think much on it. She doesn't trust easily, but is usually reliable unless something out of her control occurs and this is rare indeed. She loves all well natured animals alike.

Weapons:

Belted on the right side of her hip is a silver dagger specially made for her by her father with two intwining dragons along the handle and an amythyst stone the color of her eyes rests in the pommel. Along the double edged blade there are vines and runes inscribed. Lady Cherri carries a staff made of precious wood, from the Bolder Forest, which has been passed down through her father's family. Each person possessing the staff has added their own touch to it by inscribing something short on it whether it be a blessing, rune, or spell. This staff sounds like an artifact and will be extremely difficult for you to get it approved. If you'd like to keep it, then you'll need to tell exactly what it does and how your char obtained it. Inheritance is not a suitable explanation.

Jewelry:

Resting in the hollow of her seemingly delicate neck rest a necklace made of such sheer gold it seems to have been spun from the mists themselves. Incrusted in this necklace are a multitude of sparkling gemstones from the Quallian Forest. Around her head, to help hold her hair back from her face, she wears a gold headpiece inscribed with a runes and blessings. What do you mean when you say it is inscribed with runes and blessings? Is it another artifact? In the center front of this head piece there is a dark blue gemstone flanked on each side by two violet ones. This headpiece came from her mother's side of the family passed down from generation to generation since before the Ylfferhim's became seperated from the Quaelhoirmhim. The last piece of jewelry Lady Cherri owns is a silver and gold broach in the shape of the Wizardleaf. This broach is true to the plant it was replicated from. Each of the four leaves will change colors according to which element is closest. This broach was enchanted by Lady Cherri's grandfather on her father's side who was said to have been a full blood Goltherrhim and a very strong mage. Her grandfather could not have been of the Goltherrhim since they are extinct. You'll need to explain how she obtained each artifact, and I count three in your CD. I would suggest choosing one artifact and dropping the other two as you'll have enough trouble with just one. Once again, inheritance is not a suitable explanation.

Possessions:

Except what has already been listed else where on this page, there is a chest on board the ship which has a few books and some clothes. Lady Cherri is currently home, but when she travels she carries a rucksack containing clothes, food, etc.

Strengths:

Lady Cherri comes from bloodlines known for their magik. She is a very skilled healer with both herbs and with the healing magik. Once again, what do you mean by healing magic? She is also a very promising elemental mage. Which element? Also, any magical char needs a section in their CD describing their abilities and where they trained. She has never figured out who the whispers belng to she hears in the winds, but has learned to listen carefully.

Weaknesses:

While she has learned a great deal, Lady Cherri is not a master in either healing magik or as an elemental mage. This is not a weakness since few truly master magic. She is not immune to diseases and sometimes needs the healing of her mother's tribe, which can cause a problem if they are no where around. This is also not a weakness as no one is immune to diseases. While Lady Cherri has known many people, they have mostly been people who wish her no real harm. Her temper can also cause her to go into an uncontrollable rage due to her Goltherrhim ancestors. The Goltherrim ancestors will not be possible.

Roads go ever ever on,
Over rock and under tree,
By caves where never sun has shone,
By streams that never find the sea.

Erian, just because a "Tribe" is extinct, does not mean that all its ancestors are. A tribe is is like a church building. The actual church is the people. Just because the "tribe" is extinct does not mean that all traces of that heritage just uped and vanished as well.

Quote:
The Goltherrhim are a now extinct tribe that once lived in the Goltherlon Forest. The High Wars agains the Helcrani caused these elves to dwindle in numbers, and they eventually left their massive forests to live with the Sanhorrhim, their more successful and peaceful brethren to the west. Few pure-blooded Goltherrhim live to this day; their blood has mixed with the Sanhorrhim.

The first paragraph in the Goltherlon entry. Pay attention to the last sentence. It is possible to have Goltherrhim blood, though minimal. As long as they are not Pure-Blooded (because they are very rare) one can be in the bloodline, even if a bit distant.

okay, so I need clarification.  Can Cherri be descended or not from the Goltherrhim tribe or not.  I've been told yes and I've been told no.  I will get started on making the other changes.

Okay, now I have a question about her inability to learn from a book, elemental mages carry spell books with them and record there spells in it, right?  At least that what I get from this exert:

"Spell Books and Tomes of Prayers
While Elemental Mages use Spell Books, clerics prefer Tomes of Prayers. Spell Books contain magical formulas, which are needed to cast spells. Tomes of Prayers contain mantras, short prayers. Each mage/cleric usually carries such a book with him/her and transcribes newly learned spells into these books."

Why can't my character have been reading a spell book passed down from her grandfather and be learning something.  She doesn't become an all knowing and powerful mage because of it, she just is beginning to learn about elemental magic this way.

As as far as the blessings embroidered it has been mentioned before with no further elaboration and is acceptable.

"Intricacy was loved by these elves, they would embroider phrases and blessings into the collars and sleeves of their clothing, as well as knots and stylized leaf art."

So do I still need to elaborate or not.  I can and it's not a problem.  I just took for granted that people understood what a blessing is.

Okay as as far as healing magic is concerned, I have read thro The School of Wind magic and it is classified as a class 5 type of spell.  For the time being I will take it out from my CD until someone tells me something.  There is mention of healing the lands, and it doesn't say what type of magic was used.  I am beginning to think it would be easier to just say Cherri went to The School of Wind and studied there.  How long does it take to graduate from the school?  I think I read somewhere that it takes somewhere around 10 or so years.  I also read someone that basically only the rich people get to go to school.  Would Cherri even qualify to go to school?  I can't post her abilities and training until this gets sorted out.

As far as her teacher is concerned, he doesn't randomly walk in.  It states before that her father and him had become very close friends.  He is a mage and his friends daughter shows potential and interest in becoming a mage.  Why is inconceivable that he would teach his good friends child elemental magic?  Also you said that anyone can learn magic if they are dedicated enough to it, as long as it isn't from reading books written by other mages correct?  I'm really not trying to piss anyone off or buck the system here, but I need to understand before I can fix the problems or else they will just keep reappearing in different forms.

In my CD it does state that she ventured far from her home with the Quaelhoirhim tribe to study with her teacher, I just never said where she went.  I will if need be.

Also while reading in the Quaelhoirhimm race it mentions that they use magic to protect citites and towns and also use magic to create other levels for others races.  Where can I find information on what type of magic is used in this instance so that my character can learn and be taught this type of magic by others in her tribe.  And if my character decides to go to school and be formally trained could she do this still and how long would she need to be schooled for?  In dealing with the elemental mage part, does she have to pick only one elemental she can use or can she use more than one.

Now I have made the staff pretty much mundane except for the fact that the wood comes from the bolder forest.  Is it still considered an artifact?  What is the difference between heirloom and artifact?

I have made some changes, but not all that were pointed out.  Please re-read and let me know about the changes made and the other questions I have.

@Kalina: I am fully aware that just because a tribe is extinct that does not necessarily mean that their bloodlines have been completely eradicated. However, in her CD she stated that her father was half Goltherrhim, which is highly unlikely considering the millenia that have passed since the destruction of the tribe. She also stated that her grandfather was a pure blooded Goltherrhim, which is impossible.

@Cherri: You may keep the Goltherrhim ancestors as long as you elaborate upon her father's heritage. Simply saying that one of his parents was of the Goltherrhim tribe will not suffice since they no longer exist. I would suggest simply saying that he is descended from that tribe instead of saying that he is half Goltherrhim. If he were of either the Helcrani or the Sanhorrhim tribes, then it will be much easier for you to describe how he is descended from the Goltherrhim. It will not be possible for her grandfather to be a pure blooded Goltherrhim as any survivors of the war would have mingled with nearby tribes. From what I've read of your CD, you simply want the Goltherrhim heritage in order for your char to have a temper. As I mentioned earlier, she can become angered without her heritage being the reason for doing so.

Mages inscribe spells into books so that they may have something to refer to when they need a particular formula. Anyone not trained in magic would not understand what they were reading or its significance.

As long as the blessings are not magical then no further elaboration is necessary.

Each element has spells that heal, wind magic is simply more developed than the others at the moment. From what I've read of wind magic, healing is sphere three and I'm not sure what level a mage has to be before being able to cast such spells. Attending Ximax is not free, but as your CD states her father is a renowned craftsmen and would be able to afford to send Cherri to Ximax. Elves take longer to learn magic and other things than humans do simply because they learn more in depth. Here is the Elf Age Calculator and here is the Restrictions thread. Her time spent at the school will depend upon her tribes and the level she is when she leaves Ximax. As far as the healing magic is concerned, it would be best if you asked one of our resident magic experts, basically Marvin or Mina.

I just find it highly unlikely that a mage would find such potential in a child and want to train her. It would make much more sense if she approached him and asked about magic. I'm not asking for you to change the fact that a customer of her father's taught her, I just want you to elaborate upon it so that it is more feasible.

I would appreciate it if you mentioned where she went to study, as it sounds odd if she is returning to Southern Sarvonia yet you never mentioned her leaving.

This entry should give you some insight as to how the elves protect their cities using magic. Basically, they do so by using illusion to create a fake city for strangers to see. Only by saying the right words at the gate may one enter the true city. Illusion is mostly wind magic, so I would assume that is what they use. Yes, she may be taught magic by a mage of her tribe but she would learn slower than she would at Ximax. A mage can learn only one element. Since you're interested in the illusion used to guard the city, wind would be your best bet.

If the staff does not have any magical abilities, then it is not an artifact. However, her broach is definately an artifact and you'll need to elaborate upon how she obtained it. Inheritance is not a reasonable explanation as families do not possess such things.

By streams that never find the sea.

Anyone mentioned my name? :p

Healing isn't neccessarily sphere III. Burning Regeneration (fire spell of level 4) is probably even a sphere I spell (temporary boost of the natural healing speed).

For healing, a cleric will probably more skilled (at least at the lower levels). What kind of healing did you have in mind?

Well, as magic can't really be seen or felt (and I don't mean the results of a spell), so I doubt you can really spot someone with 'magical potential'. But as magic is related to the strength of mind he could of course spot one with a strong mind.
Also, it would be more likely that he would advise her to study in Ximax if he thought she was really talented (although money could be an isue in that case).

The formulas only have minor importance. Most of what they write down is how to cast it (possibly with a diagram).

Oh, and if you want a Goltherrhim heritage for your temper, how about just having some Goltherrhims in the family in the past and everyone always says that your temper comes from there or so?

And feel free to fire away those magic questions.

Is there any mention where the School of Wind is actually located.  I need to know how far she traveled for school and how she has to travel from school back to her home.  I am thinking not.  Also, do the schools give things to their students that have done exceptionally well.  Maybe my character could have come by her brooch that way given as a graduation present?  I have rewrote alot of things so please re-read and let me know.  I need questions answered further before I can continue or else I will have written more useless stuff.

Ximax teaches all four spheres. It's the biggest and most important magical institute, and also the only one currently developed. I think most student will stay at Ximax and only travel home during vacations and such.

I think - but I'm not completely sure - that you get something when graduating from level 6. That's of course just Ximax. Nothing stops you from receiving stuff from your parents, other family, or even friends.

I might look through the CD later if I have the time, but I just want to mention here that in a conversation I once had with Arti, I was told that Óh'mod'hál is an extremely rare ability, almost never found outside the Ylfferhim royal line (or something like that anyway, because I don't recall the Ylfferhim leadership to be hereditary).  I doubt that your character would possess it.  It should also be noted that the entry is pretty old, and I don't think all the parts fit anymore.

A few other things I noticed:
1. the Ylfferhim are a rather isolationist tribe.  They don't leave their forests much, and don't get that many visitors either.  They just don't intereact with other tribes much, so you'd probably have to explain your ancestry.
2. the Ylfferhim and the Quaelhoirhim, being amongst the most magical tribes, probably have their own magic schools.  Why send her to Ximax then?  BTW, if you change your mind and decide to have her train in her tribe's school, I think their magic system is probably similar enough to that of Ximax that you don't really have to change much.  Just remember that elves are not humans so their attitudes towards magic might be different.
3. "Since Cherri is a magic user, there are times when she needs to return to The Elandim to replenish her Cár’áll."  Uhm...What's the Elandim?  And car'all is not something that can be replenished.  Car'alls are the non-physical aspect of things, and all things have a car'all.  Magic doesn't use up car'all.  It just manipulates it.

@Mina: Just for future Reference, Elandim is another name for the City of Elving, in the NorthWestern part of the province of Manthria

EDIT: @Erian: healing in druidic magic can only done through black druidry, and thus, wouldn't be taught.

Am I missing someplace that has updated information?  I pull everything for my character from what is posted in the specific tribes section under the races icon.  No hwere does it mention that the Ylfferhim tribe doesn't venture out very far nor likes visitors.  It does say however "...and the Ylfferhim bards often travel to surronding elven tribes to teach other elven children basic lore."  And it says "The Ylfferhim are a small and isolated group of elves that dwell in the Quallian Forest. Decended from - as they believe - the Astyrhim, they are actually very closely related to the Quaelhoirhim at the nearby Zeiphyrian Forests and relations between the two tribes are close, if sometimes a little strained."  If the information contained in the races section is old and not updated and can't be relied on as a proper guide to write CDs from, please tell me where the most recent information is so that I won't keep making these kinds of mistakes.

Also it states that "The Ylfferhim have a higher natural ability for magic than most elven tribes. In fact the tribe has the highest natural propensity for magic of any tribe in Southern Sarvonia, with a much higher than average number of individuals demonstrating an ability for sensing Oh'mód'hál. Over the years the Ylfferhim have utilised their talents for magic to protect their forest home and thus the Quallian is quite unspoilt."

I would really like to get my CD approved soon, but there are so many contraditions I keep running into it doesn't seem like I can please everyone.  Just like with the magic schools.  I already asked, either here in this thread or in the A Guide to Magic thread, if the elves had their own schools and was told that the only school that was developed was Ximax.  Even tho the tribes my character comes from may very well have their own system of magic school, I haven't found where it states that it is developed enough for me to use and pass my CD because it is underdeveloped.  How would you gauge at what level the elves are learning at since they would follow close guidelines with Ximax, but more in depth?  In what way would the tribal schools differ from Ximax besides the obvious it being taught by the tribe rather than at a big school?  Where is there information at that I can look to cut down on my mistakes so that I can get my CD approved?

I also read that under  Cár’áll Magical Aura "You can lose Cár’áll and add Cár’áll through magical means and/or belief, and you can change the structure within your Cár’áll to make you feel stronger or to make yourself feel more energized. In a way you can interpret Cár’áll as energy, as a power living in everything and which needs focus and alignment. "

It would make sense that when dealing with very strong spells, especially when you are still learning and will overexert oneself, that your energy would decrease and would become weaker (Or to put in another way you would tire yourself out).  Am I misinterupting this?  Or do magic users has a never ending means of casting spells?  The way I understood it Cár’áll is both spirtual and physical and can be manipulated in some form or fashion and that everything possesses Cár’áll in some form.  Now the how to manipulate Cár’áll is the in depth and complicated part, but the concept really isn't.  Am I correct in my understanding?  If not, then I need to understand it properly if I am ever going to get to RP here.

I don't mean to take up so much time or seem to give people grievences and make them mad.  I'm really not trying to "backtalk" anyone who knows so much more about how things work here than I do, I'm just trying to understand this complex way of doing things that you all have.  And the only way to do that is to tell you how I reached the conclusions that I have and ask for you to tell me where I went wrong in my research and thinking so that I can understand it and fix it so as not to cause so much trouble later.

P.S.  Do I need an expert in the Magic field and the Quaelhoirhim and expecially the Ylfferhim Tribes to take a look at this CD?

Well considering you have 2 of the top authorities on magic already commenting *Marv/Mina* and thee top authority on elves *Erian* (Outside of Rayne) commenting, I would say you have much of what you need already here.

The ability of Oh'mód'hál has basically been banned from players as long as I have been on the site (about 18months). If not my first character Valannia would of had it :biggrin Over the years the Ylfferhim have utilised their talents for magic to protect their forest home and thus the Quallian is quite unspoilt."

Hence the learning curve in the academy is quicker than an outside teacher. In what way would the tribal schools differ from Ximax besides the obvious it being taught by the tribe rather than at a big school? Where is there information at that I can look to cut down on my mistakes so that I can get my CD approved?

The entries on both tribes are correct and up to date. Mina is asking for you to explain how her parents met, he did not say that it was impossible. You just mentioned the easiest way for her mother to have left her tribe (Her mother could have been a bard that traveled to the Zeiphyrian Forests where she fell in love with her father or something to that effect;)  Also the entry mentions Ylffer mages leaving to study with the Quaelhoirhim, her mother could have been such a mage). And while we're quoting the Ylfferhim entry: "The elves rarely wander out of the forest though two small costal settlements exist outside of the Quallian, which are abandoned during times of war."

As Mina mentioned, the elven school will be similar enough to Ximax for it to be used in your CD. The major differences between Ximax and the elven school are setting (there is such a school in Elving, read the entry on the city for a description of it) and the races attending and teaching at the school (it will mostly be elves with maybe a few humans, basically only those permitted into the true city). As far as how fast your char would learn is concerned: I couldn't answer this earlier due to you not yet being sure about the tribes she is descended from.:p  It would take your char about 130 years to become a lvl 5 mage and she would have to be at least 20 when she began her training.
