Human, Eyelian

« on: March 24, 2006, 05:30:23 AM »

Comments are welcome!

Name:  Naya More’ek
Gender:  Female
Age:  30
Race:  Human
Tribe:  Eyelian
Occupation:  Beast Master
Title:  Wolf friend (female Eyelian)

Appearance:  Slim and dark-tanned, Naya stands at about 1.4 peds, which is smaller even than the average Eyelian. She has a dark complexion, with dark-brown hair bordering on black, almost always tied back in a pony tail, and a sun-tanned skin that is slightly darker than cinnabrown. Even her eyes are very dark, the difference between the iris and the pupil being rather minimal. Her face is not so much beautiful, as it is exotic. It will never put a man under a spell that he can’t get out of, but that is not what she wants. If ever a man should be interested in her, it has to be for her good character and not for her good looks. Her arms and legs are rather muscled, although not as much as a male Eyelian.
A striking characteristic is the tattoo on her right arm, which shows the head of a wolf baring his fangs. This is the surest sign that she is a member of the Wolf Clan of her tribe.

Clothes:  Clad in the traditional garb of her tribe, she wears a sleeveless shirt and a short skirt, to just above the knees. The skirt is sognastheen, while she has two shirts, one Teki red and the other Sou’cald blue. Two simple golden rings adorn her ears, having had her lobes pierced in her childhood. She also has an ornately crafted bracelet, given to her by her parents when she came back from the wilderness.

Personality: Naya is a friendly and outgoing woman. She has a warm smile and a friendly word for all who she knows. Rather trusting, she forms friendships easily. Although she could be a good leader of people had she wanted to, she never felt the need to do so. She is quite happy to ‘live and let live’.
She is a little naïve, in the sense that she doesn’t suspect people to do her wrong and even if told about mischief, she will give them the benefit of the doubt. Only when proven wrongdoing against her or her friends will she become angry. This is never for long, and she easily forgives, but afterwards she will not trust that person ever again. It is not because she forgives, that she forgets.

Strengths: As a beast master, Naya has the ability to speak with animals, which is of course a major strength. However, one needs a certain amount of time to learn an animal’s language; she can not talk to just any animal. Up to now, she has learned to speak to the wolf, the eagle and the fox. She is best at talking to the wolf, it also being her spiritual guide. Second best is the eagle, as she has spent several years with one that she had rescued as a young bird. She is not yet very fluent in the language of the fox, and the one that she had learned the language from had unfortunately died.

From a young age already, she has been trained as a sword fighter. Her Eyelian built body, small but slim, allows her to be quite fast, and she walks and fights in a well-balanced way. Her experience is a strength too. Over the years, she has learned many different moves.

Weaknesses: In a fight with people that are bigger than she is, her size is a definite disadvantage. She doesn’t have the same reaching span that the opponent has. The other is usually heavier, therefore he can put more strength in his attack, although this is countered slightly by her own strength, which is greater than her size would make out.

Her preferred arm is right, but some years ago she has broken her right wrist. It mended nicely, but even now the wrist is still weak. If a swordfight lasts too long for her wrist and it grows tired, she is almost obliged to switch to her left hand, with which she fights less well.

Being quick to trust people can be a weakness. Although she has some intuitive feeling about whether a person is good or bad, she may still be mistaken. If she has given her trust to the wrong person, she can be manipulated, as long as it’s not too obvious, she is after all not stupid, either.

History: When she was born in a small Eyelian village in the Rimmerins Ring, as a member of the Clan of the Wolf, her father went into the ‘Lodge of Purification’, as all Eyelian fathers do when their child is born. He went in during the morning, and prayed and fasted for a day. At a late hour of the evening, a voice that seemed to come from the heated stones whispered one word to him: “Naya…” Then all was silent again. He knew that the Two Gods had given him the name of his daughter through one of the spirits. Happy, he went home, took the newly born in his arms, and showed her to the village. “This is my daughter Naya, as the Two Gods have named her!” he said, with the traditional words.
Growing up, Naya was a happy child. She laughed a lot, and played with the other children in the village. Hers was a happy family. When she was seven, her father began teaching her the basics of the swordfight. There are not many Eyelians who fight with this weapon, but her father had travelled a lot in his youth, and he had learned from a true master of arms. Because of his short built, he fought with a shortsword, as does Naya now. He had given her a shortsword for her very own on her tenth birthday, ordered especially with the Quaelhoirhim. It was still rather long for her at that age, but as she grew older and a little taller, it was the perfect length for her to fight with.
The exercises that she had to complete were tiring and boring, but she was determined to complete them, as they would help her to be balanced and to fight well, even though they didn’t seem to have anything to do with fighting. They trained her muscles, her sense of orientation, and her balance.
At the age of twelve, she went into the ‘Lodge of Purification’ for the first time herself. This was a momentous event, as it signified the start of her womanhood and of the Seeking of the Spirit. This ritual may become a little clearer if we read this letter, which Naya sent to an elf friend of hers.

Dear friend,
In your last letter, you have asked me to describe my passage into womanhood. Although we rarely tell this to outsiders, we do not make a secret out of it either. Therefore, I will tell you what you have asked.
It happened when I had seen twelve summers. Many women of my tribe experience it at that age, though for a very few it starts earlier and for some later. I knew that I was ready for the Seeking of the Spirit when I first started bleeding. That is traditionally the sign for women. I know not what it is for men, you would have to ask one of them.
I was very nervous on that first day, nervous but excited. I knew that the ritual would start on the following morning. As I have already told you, the Seeking of the Spirit is one of the three great spiritual times among us Eyelians. With the other two being the Naming at birth and the Returning of the Spirit at death, this is the one spiritual time that we experience consciously in this body. The day that one knows it is about to start is therefore momentous.
On the morning of the following day, I awoke with the same sense of nervousness and excitement. I washed and dressed ritually with the help of my mother and aunts. This part of the ritual is known only to Eyelians, and I will not tell it to you. I can say, however, that I was dressed in a white shirt and skirt. I then walked barefoot toward the Lodge of Purification, escorted by my mother and one aunt. All who saw us stepped aside, for they knew what was about to happen.
At the door of the Lodging my mother and aunt both took my hand and led me inside, symbolising that I was at that moment still a child that needed her family to guide her. I would come out a woman who could make her own decisions.
Inside the Lodge was one other person, once mother and aunt had stepped outside and closed the door. It was the spiritual leader of our village, Rafigan. He was there to keep the stones in the fire pit hot and pour water over them so that they steamed. He also provided the water that I was allowed to drink.
For five days, I stayed in the Lodge. I fasted, prayed and meditated, lost in thought. Sometimes hours went by without me saying a word. At other times, Rafigan and I talked and talked, about my hopes and dreams for the future, but also my fears, or my past life.
In the evening of the fifth day, the bleeding stopped. This signified the end of my sojourn in the Lodge. When I went out, there was noone to greet me. Not yet, for the Seeking was but halfway done. Rafigan gave me a knife, and I left my home, still barefoot. Gradually I travelled north into the wilderness. I had many dreams during the week that followed. I still remember all of them, as I remember everything from those two weeks. But I won’t bore you with the de*****ion. Only one is important.
On the third day I was sitting on some rocks, meditating. I heard the howling of a wolf. Then I saw the shape of the same wolf coming closer. He was bigger than a regular wolf, and he seemed translucent. When he was close enough, he sat down on his haunches.
He sat and watched me for a long time. It was than that I first began to understand the language of the wolf. Then, he began to fade. Soon I could no longer discern him. Yet I knew he was still present, if unseen. Even now, when I need advice or guidance, I can talk to him and he will help me. At times his voice is but a whisper on the wind, or he comes to me in a dream. And sometimes, if the matter at hand is grave enough, he appears to me as he had the first time, while I am meditating.
When I returned to the village, a feast awaited me. My mother and father gave me a present, as is custom when a child has become a woman or a man. It was the golden bracelet that you have seen on my arm. I also received the image of the White Wolf of my tribe on that day. Even to this day, I am proud of it.
I hope, dear friend, that I have answered your question adequately. I look forward to your next letter, and to your incessant questions about Eyelian life. I remain
Yours truly
Naya

In the course of her life, she travelled to the wilderness a few times, always to learn the language of the animals. On her first trip, she encountered a pack of wolves, into which she was accepted in due time, partly thanks to her spiritual guide. Because of the deep bond she shared with the wolf, she was able to learn its language more quickly than she would another animal’s. She stayed with this pack for a few years.
During the second journey, she saved a young eagle from dying. She did not stay in the wilderness quite so long as with the wolves, but the eagle stayed with her when she went back home. He taught her the language of the eagles, in which she is now also quite adept, although not as much as in the wolves’ language.
On the third journey, when she was 26, she met an old fox. He started teaching her his language, but unfortunately died of old age before she could become adept at it. She has not yet met another fox to continue with the teaching.
After the fox’s death, she began to roam Santharia rather than the wilderness. At one point she met a young lone wolf. His paw was wounded, and she tended him, while at the same time making perfectly clear just how strong she was, both physically and mentally. When he was healed, he had accepted her as his pack-leader, and he followed her where she went.

Weapons: Naya owns a shortsword. It is tied in a scabbard on her back. It was given to her by her father when she was ten. It is a well-balanced blade, forged by the Quaelhoirhim. An intricate design runs from the middle of the blade down to the hilt. The centre of this design are the words ‘For my daughter, of whom I am proud’ in Stýrash. The hilt itself is bound with leather, now formed perfectly to fit her hand, through years of using the sword.

Belongings: Her most precious belonging is the bracelet given by her parents. Without it, she feels rather naked. She would never dream of selling it, much less giving it away.

Familiar: Not really a pet, the young wolf that joined her on her journeys is her friend. He doesn’t have a name, as animals have no need of one. Equally, to him, Naya has no name. She is the pack-leader, but nobody else.

Hello Naya! Welcome!

You have a nicely written Cd here!
Please reread the Eyelian entry about the spirit guide - it is no longer a real animal which will come to you, but as the name says - a "spirit". If you want to have a wolf as companion, you need to work for it to get one. Either try to befriend a pack - or find a lost pup. But make it reasonable. Your sprit guide, the wolf (you may have dreamt, that a wolf visited you), may help you when a decision, what you should do or how to act is needed.

I must have formulated it wrong, because that's what I meant.

The wolf that accompanies her is not the spirit guide! But maybe I should change it so that is a bit  clearer. I just meant to say that her spirit guide is from the spirit of the wolf, which is why she has learned the language of the wolves first, why she has a deeper bond with them than with other animals. The others can't see her spirit guide. But maybe I should make it so that she can't see it either, but just knows it's there, would that make it more clear?

Good job. Prolly get titled before me....But that may be because you're finished and I'm not. I feel like an over achiever. -.-

Anyways...Just one little note from one Eyelian to another, in the Eyelian entry, it states that Eyelians usually use simple weapons such as the staff, bow, and spear. So, imho, you might want to give an explination on as to how your father know how to wield a sword. Just a couple of sentences to sum it up should be enough, I would think.

But, as of know, I'm not an Eyelian expert, although that is one of my dreams. ^^ Maybe a mod or an admin could say something about that, either back me up or contradict me.

Good job, all the same. You are a very good Eyelian sister.....even if you are older. Oh! Maybe we could be cousins! But I'm getting ahead of myself. I still need to finish mine. And get titled. I'm rambling. I'm sorry....

Hey Claudirea, thanks for commenting

It also states in the Eyelian entry that Eyelians trade amongst others with the Quaelhorim, from whom they obtain swords. Therefore, I guess there are also swordfighters among the Eyelians :D

Hmm....perhaps....*ponders* Perhaps a contradiction in the entry? Hm....*strokes chin and looks thoughtful*

Well, I have a test in 40 min. so I better go study. I guess we'll just have to see what the admin./mods. say on this issue. Although it won't have any effect on Claudirea.

Naya, Claudirea is right, you need a better explanation for your father being proficient with a sword. The entry says, that the Eyelians trade swords with the Quaelhorhim, but it doesn't say, theat they use it. they would be too long for them anyway. it is just the beaty of the swords which they like. Probably they are hanging over the fireplace!

So you have two options - your father travelled in his youth and learned how to use a sword , or you choose a Sophronian mother who might have some traits of her anchesters and know how to habdle this weapon. (The tribe of the Sophronians as described in the entry doesn't exist any longer, but their descendants still do and though they have mingled with other tribes, they follow some of their old traditions)

- a wolf can't behave other than a wolf, you need to be his "pack-leader"

Other than this I don't see any problems.

Yay! I was right about something!

Also, I was wondering, for Naya's benefit, if Eyelians could use daggers, since a sword would be too big for them. But, again, you would have to have an explaination as to how your father learned to weild a dagger.

Shall I end this haunting nightmare for you?

Hiya Naya! First off, this is a wonderful CD you have here.:thumbup
I saw that you are looking for a weapon about the size for your character and had some thoughts on weapons that would be proportional to her size.
One Handed Bladed Weapons
Knife
Dagger
Dirk
Shortsword (This is what Sting was from LOTR)
Rapier

Hand-n-Half Weapons
Longsword
Saber
Gladius

Two-Handed Weapons
Broadsword
Scimitar
Falchion
Cutlass

Those are my ideas on where certain swords and bladed weapons would fall for your character at her height. But I am no weapons expert so those are only ideas. Hope this helps you out a bit with getting your title soon.

Hey! I tried to adress all the comments.
-The wolf now accepts Naya as the pack leader
-The wolf that is her spiritual guide is not a living thing anymore (as described in the letter)
-She is now a shortswordfighter, learned from her father who learned it from a master in his youth.

I think that about covers it? If there are any other comments, please give them.

I think it's good to go. I don't see any major problems with it. Of course, someone else more versed in spelling and grammar can go over it. I tend to be really horrible at those things.

Hey Kareesh,

I study English, so spellingmistakes are (hopefully) down to a minimum. Of course, everyone makes mistakes and my native language is still Dutch, which tends to show now and then, but in view of my education it should be more or less all right *grins*

I saw your Claudirea is done, I'll take a look at her asap.
