Human, Kasumarii of the Korenjaan Order

« on: May 30, 2006, 03:32:23 PM »

Name: Kali Rae

Gender: Female

Age: 21 years

Tribe: Kasumarii (Kar’ii) of the Korenjaans Order

Occupation:  Freelance Spy

Title: Raven Songbird

Height: 1 ped, 2 fores and a nailsbredth

Weight: 1 Pygge, 2 Hebs, 2 Ods

Hair: Black

Eyes: Dark Hazel

Overview:
Kali is a shy young woman skilled in the finding of information.  From the age of eight she grew up on the streets of Isthrius and taught herself most of what she knows now.  She is no stranger to killing and has no qualms in slipping a quiet dagger through the ribs of an unsuspecting adversary, but is not a killer by profession; she tends to think of herself as a spy.  She is skilled in the art of stealth, as taught to her by her late brother, and uses it well.  Her skill with her blades, while not stellar, is adequate and she can defeat most foes without formal combat training. She was harshly judged and demoralized as a child which has lead her to develop both a terror of failure and a stubbornness that does not easily allow her to give up.  She also is very insecure, especially around strangers.

Physical Appearance:
Kali’s appearance is quite striking.  She has the pale skin common to most Kar’ii, but her hair is midnight-black, and her eyes, a dark shade of hazel.  Although unknown to most, she inherited these unusual traits from her father's side of the family.  One would have to go back four generations to find blood that wasn't Kar'ii, however her grandmother's grandmother was of the Kanapan tribe.  It was thought that her dark colouring was lost in her children, but now, several generations later, it has re-emerged.  The contrast between her skin tone and her hair give her a fierce look.  Her features are slender; her nose is slim and slightly pointed.

Although it is rare that one sees them, her back and arms are covered in scars given to her by her father when she was young.  She has the usual slight-of-build of her people, with skinny but strong arms and legs.  Her hair does not fall quite to her shoulders and she keeps it tidy but usually wears it down.  She often lets it drape into her face so as not to have to look at the strangers she passes in the streets.

Clothes:
For her everyday attire, Kali wears a tunic and breeches of a heavy dark-brown fabric and good make.  A dark, hooded, fur-lined cloak is often draped over her shoulders to keep out the harsh northern elements, and she wears black boots of hard leather.

She owns one well tailored dress of blue linen embroidered with silver, and a matching pair of slippers for times when she is required to mingle with high society.  She owns two silver bracelets and a silver chain necklace that she only wears with the dress.

When her profession requires her to do any “indoor reconnaissance” she wears a shirt and pants of tight, black padded leather.  She has shoes of soft black leather for climbing, and usually wears a black bandana tied across her face so that she is not easily identifiable.

Personality:
Kali is an introvert by nature.  If left to her own devices she would seldom leave her dwelling, let alone engage in conversation.  When necessity forces her out of doors she walks with her head down, hair in her face so as to avoid contact with everyone around her.  She deliberately takes detours to avoid crowded places and seeks to avoid all contact with people.

Such has been the path of her life, however, that this is rarely possible for extended lengths of time.  Over the years, Kali has learned how to force herself to be social and has developed something of a split personality because of it.  She still detests social interaction with strangers, but can play her facade well enough to appear completely at ease, even at a huge gathering.  At least at the beginning.

If faced with a situation in which she must mingle it is necessary for her to meditate and dwell on it beforehand.  She is able to call on her well constructed, bubbly, and cheerful self and can enter the situation calmly.  Although she does nothing to call attention to herself she is often found delightful by the gentlemen of the party, and sociable by the ladies.  She can engage in small talk, and sometimes gossip (for her profession lends itself extremely well to juicy gossip).  She is often able to identify with people from all walks of life, having experienced both poverty and high society herself.

This sort of behavior puts an enormous strain on Kali, and she finds it very difficult to maintain.  The longer she is in contact with people, the more nervous she gets.  She starts by taking quick glances around her, as if she is keeping an eye out for someone she detests and would rather avoid.  This progresses into a more nervous looking around like she is looking for a sneak in the shadows looking to snatch her away into the night.  She fidgets and becomes pale; she begins to sweat.  At some point during the night, someone is bound to notice that she is not the same outgoing, talkative girl she was an hour ago and will inevitably ask "What's wrong?"  Whenever she is confronted directly like this, Kali panics.  She often tries to mutter something about not feeling well but her words are often lost to her company.  She then runs out the door, and back to her dwelling where she lies down, heard drumming, trying to calm herself.

Once she has had an encounter like this with one particular group of people, she finds it extremely difficult to go back to them.  If she does, she begins the night with a defisit, already feeling nervous from the get go.  This phenomenon is less pronounced among small groups of people, and even less if she is having a one-on-one conversation with someone in a private room.  She can often chat for hours with a single person, provided they are not in a public space.

Needless to say, this makes making friends extremely difficult for Kali.  She only has a small handful of friends with whom she feels comfrotable.  She often speaks less to them then she does with strangers because she doesn't feel as if it is her duty to speak with them.  She is content with their company, and content simply to listen to their conversations and remain quiet herself.

Strengths:
Kali’s biggest strength is her ability to find information.  From looking in the right chest in a dark room, to asking the right person, Kali is an expert at finding out what she needs to know.    She has developed several techniques ranging from careful questioning of people she suspects of having useful information, to simply breaking and entering peoples' houses.  She is often able to coax information even from stubborn individuals through flirtation, careful flattery, and other such manipulations.  When at the height of her game she could be considered "silver tongued."

After many years of careful information hunting, Kali has a keen sense of detecting lies.  Although a skilled liar will be able to deceive her, most normal folk would have a rough time trying to convince Kali of an untruth.  If Kali suspects an untruth she is able to phrase questions in such a manner that it makes it hard for her victim to maintain his or her story.  She works at confounding her opponent and making them slip up, contradicting themselves or stating inconsistencies.

She possesses the usual set of skills for someone who routinely breaks into other’s houses.  She can move silently, climb walls, and get through most locked windows and doors however a good padlock will completely stump her.

If caught in a situation where she needs to defend herself, she fights ably with Manni’s blades, one in each hand.  She uses the blades more like knives then swords.  If Kali finds herself in a situation where she is able to strike a fatal blow from the shadows, she will do so without hesitation.  Although she has done well teaching herself to fight she is easily outmatched by opponants with formal training.

Weaknesses:
Kali is very insecure.  She is highly skilled, but if in a position where she is being watched, she becomes clumsy and uncoordinated.  Even if someone is listening to a conversation she is having with someone she is probing for information she can become tongue-tied.  Sometimes she becomes insecure even if she so much as suspects an observer.

Her fear of judgement borders on paranoia and she becomes agoraphobic when venturing in markets.  Whenever she is forced out of doors during the day she will go to great lengths to avoid the more heavily populated areas of the city.  She will cut through alleyways and slums to avoid people.  If she is required to venture into the market she is sure to keep her head down and ignore all those around her.  One afternoon several years ago she found herself in the public square during a hanging. The crowd pressed around her, shoulder to shoulder, cutting her off from any escape route.  There she had a panic attack and started to suffocate.  Wild eyed and panic stricken she pushed her way violently through the crowd and ran breathless into a deserted shop where she laid shaking and gasping for breath.

She has a terrible fear of failure and may try and pursue an endeavour even after she has failed at it.  On one occasion, Kali had been hired to discover the identity of a strange, secretive traveler that had been making trouble for her employer.  The traveler had taken up residence at a local inn that was located centrally in the city.  She snuck into his room just after sunset and, thinking him to be out, set about browsing his possessions before she noticed that there was a figure in the bed.  He was sleeping but Kali was made nervous by the sight of another person in the room.  When she attempted to remove herself through the window from whence she came, she knocked over a small chair, waking the stranger.  She made it out before she was caught, but upon review of the situation the following morning she discovered that the traveler had left.  Still seeking his identity, Kali left Isthrius to track the stranger through the countryside, despite the fact that her employer was thrilled that he had left.  Kali ended up venturing into the wilderness and almost dying in the harsh northern climate.

Her dislike of social situations makes it difficult for her to make friends.  The only way that she can meet people is if someone approaches her first, or she is doing "work" on them, probing them for information.  Understandably, most people she interrogates aren't inclined towards friendship.  Her true friends are people that have approached her with words of kindness.

History:
Kali’s parents, Garrel and Kumi’la, were both Kasumarii assassins of high renown. They left their home on the island of Guldor before Kali was born, taking with them their youngest son, Manni, and leaving their eldest behind to complete his training at the Kar’ii academy.  They crossed the sea and landed in the Celeste Lowlands, in northern Sarvonia, and began forging a living as freelance assassins.  They did very well for themselves, as Kar’ii assassins are in high demand, so when Kumi’la became pregnant again they were able to settle down in the city of Lu’Weilima during the pregnancy.

The six months of rest nearly drove Garrel out of his mind.  With nothing to satisfy his fierce bloodlust he became aggressive towards everyone around him, including his wife and son.  The day of Kali’s birth came with much anticipation from her mother and brother, but it served only to further the disharmony between Garrel and the rest of his family.  Kali’s parents and siblings were all of typical Kar’ii colouring, with hair of the lightest blond and eyes of pale blue.  When born, Kali’s skin was light enough but her hair was midnight black, and although she was born with blue eyes, they would later darken to a deep hazel.

Upon seeing his daughter, Garrel went into a rage.  Thinking his wife unfaithful he stormed from their comfortable lodgings, grabbing his moonblades as he went.  Kumi’la, Manni, and the newborn girl sat huddled together in their lodgings throughout the night.  Garrel returned in the morning covered in blood without one of his moonblades, however he seemed distant rather then angry.  He refused to talk about what happened that night but it became clear to Kumi’la what had happened.  Over the next week, stories spread about the murder of an entire family of Erpheronian emissaries and their housekeepers.  There were several witnesses that claimed that they had seen a man with white hair and two vicious-looking curved blades entering the house that night.  One of the blades had been recovered from the murder scene and was easily identified by local scholars as a Kar’ii moonblade.  It seems as though Garrel’s finely tuned assassin skills has deserted him in his rage.

The midwife attending to Kali’s delivery put two and two together and alerted the local bailiffs as to the whereabouts of the killer.  By that time Kali’s family had already packed up and resumed their life on the road and were never seen in that region again.

After that incident they resumed their life on the road as hired killers.  They trekked northeast into the more unsettled areas of the Sarvonian continent.  They took many jobs infiltrating and killing orcish leaders and other enemies of the Kuglimz tribes.  Before the year was up Kumi’la became pregnant again but Garrel refused her any rest.  They traveled through the lands of the Losh-Oc Orcs and arrived in the lands of the Kanapan in time for Kumi’la’s delivery.  In the city of Isthrius she gave birth to her fourth child, a normal boy, to whom they game the name of Saul.

They stayed in this region for the better part of the next seven years, during which time they treated Kali like dirt.  Encumbering her with more then she could carry and forcing her to march to the point of exhaustion, she was treated more like a slave then a child.  Her father was downright abusive, both physically and emotionally, and her mother was apathetic to her plight.  In Kumi’la’s eyes Kali was a demon sent to her to destroy her life and alienate her from her husband, and so did little to protect her.  Her only ally was her brother, Manni, who had grown well and was progressing into manhood.

Manni was being taught the ways of the Kar’ii by his parents and took it unto himself to educate his little sister.  Although she was often hungry and tired, Kali enjoyed her lessons with Manni and practiced hard on her spare time so as to impress her brother.  She turned out to be quite a gifted child and learned very quickly.  Her parents seemed to ignore their private lessons and Kali was able to learn many nuances of the art of stealth, and very rudimentary combat skills.

Unfortunately her time with Manni was short lived.  As soon as Manni was eighteen years of age, he began helping his parents do their work, but he always felt responsible for the protection of his siblings; he was never entirely focused on the task at hand.  One night, when Kali was eight years old, the family had set up camp in the forest just outside of a small town in which their next victim lay sleeping peacefully.  As soon as Manni, Garrel, and Kumi’la had left, a band of ruffians happened across the campsite.

Luckily for Kali and Saul, the adults were not yet out of earshot and heard the commotion.  They made their way silently back to camp and assessed the situation.  There were twelve men, all lightly armoured carrying an assortment of worn, rusty weapons.  Kali, who had been hiding with her brother in the tent, and unaware that her family was planning an attack from the darkness of the forest, had grabbed two cooking knives and was planning her escape.  As soon as one of the brigands stumbled into the tent she sprang on him, using the element of surprise and her youthful exuberance to slip a knife past his patchwork armour, and into his gut.  Taking no time to examine her target she quickly instructed Saul to stay close and ran and full speed out of the tent with the intention of hiding in the forest.  Manni, seeing his younger siblings in danger, ran out of the forest to their aid.  Unfortunately, one of the ruffians had seen the movement, and was already moving to intercept the youngsters.  Upon seeing Manni, he let fly a deadly throwing knife that caught him in the throat.  Manni stumbled and fell, knocking over Kali and Saul as he went.  Garrel and Kumi’la sprang into action, Kumi’la with her bow, and Garrel with his moonblade.  All twelve brigands lost their lived to their blades and arrows that night.

In Garrel’s eyes Kali was solely responsible for the death of Manni, and the same night beat her unconscious.  Numb to the pain, Kali’s only thoughts were on Manni, her beloved brother, and how she would never have an ally within her family again.  Her family packed up camp and trekked back to Isthrius.  Once back in Isthrius, Kali made the decision to leave her family and ran away, taking with her only clothes, a small bag of coins, and Manni’s blades.

From the age of eight, Kali grew up as an orphan on the streets of Isthrius.  She was alienated by the other kids because of her unusual appearance and introverted nature, found her company in older folk.  When she was little, she made a dishonest living in inns and pubs helping unscrupulous people cheat at card games, and as she got older she started doing more complicated work finding information for anyone who wanted to pay her.

Throughout her adolescence she continued to practice and elaborate on the arts of stealth and basic melee combat taught to her by Manni.  Although she was young when he died, Kali clung to every bit of Manni that she could and remembered many of his lessons in detail.  She developed her own fighting style using her brother’s blades and became very stealthy.  From the ability to move silently, to the scaling of walls, she proved herself able to forge her own route.  As she took harder and harder jobs, she learned how to manipulate people into giving her information that would lead her to her ultimate objective.  Over the years she developed a reputation in the streets as “the girl who can find stuff out” and started doing work for more and more upper class clients.

As is the case with most people of her profession she gradually accumulated enemies.  People don't take kindly when their privacy is invaded and their private lives become public.  One night after a midnight "indoor reconnaissance" run she was returning home when she ran into a group of thugs in an alleyway.  They roughed her up badly that night, and the next morning she started getting death threats from more then one source.  Although stubborn, Kali is not foolish and saw this as the time to depart.  Within two days Kali was packed, still looking battered and bruised, and on a ship heading for warmer climates.  She had booked passage through one of her few friends, sympathetic with her cause and worried about her wellbeing, and was able to sail free of charge.  The ship ended its trip in the port at Carmalad.

Kali took this opportunity to start anew.  She resumed the work she had done in Isthrius, although it was much more difficult as she had no contacts or reputation.  She learned from her mistake as well and now never stays in one place for too long.  She lives in her carryhome and wanders the continent looking for ways to make money and survive.

Hi Drasil,

Thank you for that.  In between my perusals of the site, I've been watching my CD sinking lower and lower on the page, almost being swallowed by the second page never to be seen again.  I've been keeping busy reading plenty of others' CDs as well as catching up on the recent happenings at The Thirsy Herald (well worth reading, very entertaining) and I can't wait to join in.

Hello Kali! Welcome to Santharia. My comments shall be in the ever-ugly color: Orange

Name: Kali Rae

Gender: Female

Age: 21 years

Tribe: Kasumarii (Kar’ii) of the Korenjaans Order

Occupation: Freelance Spy

Title: Finder of Information

Height: 1 ped, 2 fores and a nailsbredth

Weight: 1 Pygge, 2 Hebs, 2 Ods

Hair: Black (Why does she have this odd hair color for her tribe? Maybe she is not of pure Kar''ii heritage? More of my own personal want to know. Though this CD did keep me wanting to read more.:)  )

Eyes: Dark Hazel

Overview:
Kali is a shy young woman skilled in the finding of information. From the age of eight she grew up on the streets of Isthrius and taught herself most of what she knows now. She is no stranger to killing and has no qualms slipping a quiet dagger through the ribs of an unsuspecting adversary, but is not a killer by profession; she tends to think of herself as a spy. She is skilled in the art of stealth, as taught to her by her late brother, and uses it well. Her skill with her blades, while not stellar, is adequate enough that she can kill with relative ease. She was harshly judged and demoralized as a child which has lead her to develop both a terror of failure and a stubbornness not to give up. She also is very insecure, especially around strangers.

Physical Appearance:
Kali’s appearance is quite striking. She has the pale skin common to most Kar’ii, but her hair is midnight-black, and her eyes, a dark shade of hazel.

Clothes:
For her everyday attire, Kali wears a tunic and breeches of a heavy, dark-brown fabric and good make. A dark, hooded, fur-lined cloak is often draped over her shoulders to keep out the harsh northern elements, and she wears black boots of hard leather. She owns one well tailored dress of blue linen embroidered with silver, and a matching pair of slippers for times when she is required to mingle with high society.

When her profession requires her to do any “indoor reconnaissance” she wears a shirt and pants of tight, black padded leather. She has shoes of soft black leather for climbing, and usually wears a bandana tied across her face so that she is not easily identifiable.

Personality:
Although she may seem outgoing, Kali is an introvert by nature. Over the years she has covered up her introvert self but it still gnaws at her when she comes into contact with those with whom she is not well acquainted. When presented with a social situation she is able to make conversation, as uncomfortable as it may be, but will tend to make excuses to retreat and avoid further contact. She is confident in her own abilities but is terrified that she is being judged by everyone else in the world. When left alone she carries herself with confidence but in the presence of others she gets nervous and shuts down, however this phenomenon isn’t as pronounced when she is among friends.
Space New Paragraph
Her hate for failure has left her with a stubbornness that keeps her from giving up, even if her task is hopeless, or her battle already lost. Sometimes, when faced with a failure she tries to invent some reason that she did not lose. Kali is, however, a loyal friend and will return kindness shown to her and do anything for those she considers her friends.

Strengths:
Kali’s biggest strength is her ability to find information. From looking in the right chest in a dark room, to asking the right person, Kali is an expert at finding out what she needs to know.

If Kali finds herself in a situation where she is able to strike a fatal blow from the shadows, she will do so without hesitation. The blood of her assassin parents still runs in her veins. Some note that she is not as skilled as a true Kar'ii should be worded into here. Her formal training stopped at the age of eight and was self-taught after that. Though this character might be a fair inclose combatant I would think she is not excellent in any shape of the word. When compared to a fully trained knight that has been taught martial skills throughout there lives.

Space New Paragraph
Her fear of judgement borders on paranoia and she becomes agoraphobic when venturing in markets.A couple of instances where this has hindered her in the past would make this a very nice weakness.

Space New Paragraph
Although she spent most of her youth in the wilderness she learned very little about survival away from civilization. When she leaves the city she is useless at looking after herself. This is really not a weakness as most people could not survive for long in the wild.

Her family packed up camp and trekked back to Isthrius, killing that night’s target on the way. Once back in Isthrius, Kali made the decision to leave her family and ran away, taking with her only clothes, a small bag of coins, and Manni’s blades.

From the age of eight, At the age of eight this character would have learned near nothing about assassination. Maybe she would learn skills through her rough life but she would probably never rival a fully trained Kar'ii. Kali grew up as an orphan on the streets of Isthrius. She was alienated by the other kids because of her unusual appearance and introverted nature, and grew up mostly in the presence of older folk. When she was little, she made a dishonest living in inns and pubs helping unscrupulous people cheat at card games, and as she got older she started doing more complicated work finding information for anyone who wanted to pay her.

Throughout her adolescence she continued to practice and elaborate on the arts of stealth and melee combat taught to her by Manni. She developed her own fighting style using her brother’s blades and became very stealthy. From the ability to move silently, to the scaling of walls, she proved herself able to forge her own route. As she took harder and harder jobs, she learned how to manipulate people into giving her information that would lead her to her ultimate objective. Over the years she developed a reputation in the streets as “the girl who can find stuff out” and has started doing work for more and more upper class clients. She has recently turned twenty one years of age and is starting to make good money as a gatherer of information for those in need of it.

There were a few grammatical errors but I am sure you would find them yourself with a simple read over.

I hope these comments help you on your way to a speedy title. I have to agree with Drasil here ... a very well written character and a wonderful read throughout.

Hi Twen,

Thank you for the critique.  I've elaborated on my weaknesses, and downplayed my melee ability so that it's clear that she's not an expert at it.  Also, I've added the spaces between paragraphs as needed. Any changes are in orange, except those made to fix errors in grammar.  I'm not particularly good at proofing my own work but I did find a few errors.  About her hair, I meant for it to be either and unusual assortment of genes or a cruel twist of fate.  I suppose Kali's mother could have been unfaithful but I never intended for that to be the case.

Thanks again and happy hunting,

Kali Rae

"Wonderfully done Kali! I think you were just holding back when you first wrote your weaknesses .... now they are just." :jawdrop

You have your first approval, though I question that her family would of left their homeland without setting out for missions determined by their people. But such happenings are not out of the question so it is really not an issue. ~goes to place the +~

Thank you Twen, I'm glad you enjoyed my writing and I'm looking forward to getting more involved with the Santharian RPG board.  Unfortunately it looks as though I may not have regular internet access for the next couple of months, but rest assured: As soon as I do I'll be sure to dive headlong into The Santharian Dream.  There's always the possiblilty that I'll be able to find someone with internet out in the country but my hopes aren't too high.  In the meantime I've been inspired by this site to flesh out one of my own RPG worlds.

'Till next time, and I hope that won't be too long, adieu and happy hunting,

Rae

Ok, now that I'm back in the realm of the non-internet-impaired I'd like to finish the character creation process and get titled.  I'm doing school at the present but I've settled into my courses, and have had a chance to evaluate how much free time I'm going to have and I'll definitely have enough.  Thanks to everyone for making such a friendly and inviting community.  I'm looking forward to being a part of it.

Adieu, and happy hunting,

Kali Rae

Your CD looks really good, though I have only read the history. I'm no Karii expert, so I have to send somebody else your way. Do they really have always two moonblades?
The only thing I found which is a bit unbelievable is, that an eight years old one runs away with two moonblades and manages to keep them! Maybe you hide them somewhere and retrieve them later, when you are older and more capable to defend their possession?

Ah, I see what you mean, however I didn't intend for Manni's blades to be moonblades.  They are described in the "weapons" section as daggers, much smaller then a moonblade (I believe anyhow).  If you still feel that I should amend that I would have no problem.

Thank you for reading it through,

Kali Rae

Kali, you are nearly there.

You need still get to Santharia, for now you are still Northern Sarvonia.
Then, an explanation for your dark hair would be fine. Maybe a hint, that there was an anchestor who was not from the Karii tribe? (Could be a grand-grandmother)
And at last: So far your character is a bit contradiction - introvert, but she needs to be outgoing when doing her job - very difficult for an introvert person. Please add a short paragraph which explains how she manages to be both? Maybe in the direction of a split personality, that when she works she slips in another person, denying her true nature? Her orphan youth and her feelings of guild due to her brothers death could have driven her into that direction (apart from the fact, that all abused children tend to develope multiple personalities).
Surely an interesting char to play!

Talia,

I have revamped the "personality" section entirely, and it is much more to my likeing.  I hope it is to yours as well :) .  Also I was wondering if there was somewhere specific that Kali should be?  I'll just add to her history to get her into Santharia but I was wondering if there was a specific province, or even city, that would be a good place for her to end up.

Finally, I feel that it is important that the origin of her looks remain unknown to both her mother and father.  I have no problem adding the geneolocal origin of her features, but I'm not sure the best place to put it.  I could tack it onto her history somewhere, but I can't think of a good way of doing it without making it an "aside" or something of the sort.  If you know any tricks of the trade that would allow me to add that information without disrupting her history, please let me know.

Thank you so much for your time, and 'till next time, adieu,

Kali

What about putting it in her appearance section? It would be somewhat of an aside, but *shrugs* I personally think that it would work better there then in the history.

As for where she ends up, I don't really think it's all that important. You could leave it as she's just wandering Sarvonia. *shrugs* That's what I said both of my characters were doing in their CD's. Plus, that gives you a bit more freedom to chose which stories you would like to join. *nods*

Hello,

Ok, I added the origin of her dark colouring in the appearence section.  That works very well, thank you for the suggestion.  I also added two paragraphs at the end of the history, getting her to the south and added, as you suggested, that she's wandering.  That leaves things nice and open-ended as you say.
