A musical theme for your reading pleasure: The Beauty of the Wilds

Mithrea Amor
"One who learns from what he sees"
Male
Alive 46 years so far
A human of the Gondolwenmith folk
Surviving as a woodsman if he can be said to have any occupation

The Last Krean

Overview
Born with both his hearing and sight impaired, well into his childhood during one remarkable day they were inexplicably restored. Having been seriously hampered by then compared to his peers at the average learning stage, he not only came to compensate for these setbacks but he acquired exceptionally acute senses and a penchant for language and observing nature.

Mithrea seems to be "face blind" and generally socially blind as he has serious difficulties interpreting both verbal and non-verbal social gestures, and has many ways of expressing himself that are idiosyncratic (unique to him). It seems he is just as alien to the people around him as they are to him, yet when he is outside amongst the animals and trees they greet him as one of their own, their reality changing in order to reciprocate his thoughts.

The Krean magic of his roots is intuitive to him, and he has had the opportunity to learn at the Academy of Nybelroid as well, but he would never do anything that in his mind is callous towards nature as that would ruin what he believes to be the only friendships he can hold. Much like others are with their own peers, he is very socially conscientious towards "non-sentient" life, not just sharing feelings and impressions but having what he thinks are full blown verbal conversations with trees and birds.

Height
Two peds, one palmspan

Weight
Nearly two pygges

Hair Colour
Dirt encrusted urmarillion

Eye Colour
Sognastheen Green

Physical Appearance
Adorning his pale, mottled flesh is a coat of his own unusual amount of body hair as well as fur and tree sap, from ankle to neck and wrist. To complement that there are bits of leaves and brush gathered in bunches to cover his privates, and keep the top of his head down to his brow free of sweat. Twigs, bird droppings, and mud all add texture and "pleasant aroma" to his coat, with a matted beard laying down just past his chest, completing a picture of undeniable charm.

Calloused feet that haven't seen soles in nearly three decades convey this man, encrusted permanently in mud. Interacting with the world are hands nearly as calloused and flecked with dirt.

But beyond the filth and gruff, hard features is virility like an eternal youth, and bright darting eyes that betray relentless interest, set above a childlike and cavernous smile. Always wide eyed, always spry and normally wearing his emotions on his sleeve (whether or not he knows it), there is only one mode of countenance for him and that mode is intense.

Clothing
Perhaps the oddest detail of a series of oddities that one might notice when first laying eyes on Mithrea, is his clothing which makes him bear an eery resemblance to a were creature. Some time in the past he gave up on dressing according to the customs of the people he found during his periodic excursions away from the wilds. Now wherever he roams he wears a single piece of clothing that seems to him like a second skin.

When he first made this "second skin" he bade his animal friends to collect their shed fur and his tree friends to patch together layers of fur with sap. As they patched more and more fur on him he became quite fond of the look and was loath to discard the finished product just to fit in when he went into town. So, he returned home and apologized profusely, asking his friends to forgive him for wasting so much of their effort, and they gladly clothed him again "saying" that it was only fitting that he dressed like his own friends and family instead of dressing like a stranger.

Personality
Probably the first thing an acquaintance would notice is that our subject is about as capable of relating with people as an oak tree. The oak tree remembers so much, contemplates so much, but alas the tree cannot relate any of this to man-folk as he cannot understand what they are flapping their jaws about and neither do they recognize his own rustlings. Mithrea's experience of reality is so utterly unlike that of others that even if he had the social intuition that many naturally have he would nevertheless be at a loss as to how he could ever use any word, or string of words he has ever heard, to describe what he sees and feels.

Symptomatic of his condition suddenly reversing, there is little difference to him between hearing something and seeing it. This is because every time he sees something in his head he simultaneously hears something, something that is actually very specific to that thing he just saw. And the same is true the other way around. A hypothetical example of this phenomena would be that blue skies always "sound" like sweet viol music, and sweet viol music always "looks" like blue skies to him.

As it regards to other people, he has trouble understanding some of the most basic social concepts. Sarcasm, veiled implications, satire, etc., are utterly incomprehensible to him let alone all of: the vocal inflections, differences in tone of voice, facial expressions, metaphoric speech, changes in posture and body and hand gestures, and the general social context behind everything. When he tries to understand any of it, it progress to the point that he irritates people and it is so perplexing and demoralizing to him (how that he can't do what seems natural for others), that it causes severe anxiety. After having enough breakdowns and episodes as a result of this unnerving experience,  he has learned to simply leave such situations when he has to.

An especially peculiar symptom he tends to have in social settings is complete sensory overload. Not only does he have overly acute senses, but he remembers everything he experiences and doesn't understand how or why people discriminate between what they do and do not try to understand. There is no such thing as "interests" to him because he is continuously interested and he never stops striving to understand and learn, learning is no means to an end to him but the end itself. It's as if he doesn't have a priority filter, some way to distinguish between relevant/irrelevant, interesting/uninteresting. You could be trying to get across a general idea to him while instead he is trying to memorize all the numbers and letters he sees on the menu or how many chairs there are in the inn.

So let's say that he was sitting at the bar in an inn, or attending a fair, and there was either too much activity whizzing past his eyes or simultaneous sounds (especially when there are numerous voices), his inability to be presented with any of that without trying to exhaustively contemplate it all causes him to just shut down. This only seems to happen when many people are present, as he has very much of a "one-track" mind and there is a certain threshold beyond which he has trouble concentrating. One like himself can't just decide to prioritize things and deal with all kinds of distractions, multiple things happening at once, there's simply an "on" mode and an "off" mode.

Similar to an animal out in the wilds, eye contact is unnerving to him and he often tries to carry entire conversations with someone without looking them in the face a single time. Every other part of a person seems benign, not the least threatening. But there is something disarming about looking into another individual's eyes and realizing that you are under the full scrutiny of their sensory equipment. It isn't unusual at all for others to be perturbed by this, unable to recognize that when he doesn't make eye contact it actually signifies quite the opposite, that he is doing his best to concentrate.

Much like interests are to most persons, what we might think of as an interest of his is one of his obsessions ("everything is interesting"). There are a number of subjects that he has practically an encyclopedic knowledge of, for example: the different magic systems of Caelereth. All indigenous forms of life on the Disk. Religions and their study in a comparative context. Anything historical in nature, but especially history and myth as it pertains to the ancient Krean people. In all likelihood he may be the Compendium's biggest fan, considering that there are probably very few aside from the contributors themselves, who have read it in it's entirety and continue to read new entries. He has quite the library nestled away under the roots of one of his best friends, rrrrrrwwwwhhhooossssshhhhfffrrr the Drasil tree, and they often like to "discuss" new entries as they share ideas and memories.

When he thinks of himself and how he relates with other people his thoughts are fraught with contradictions. Because he often finds the motives and actions of others to be callous, inane, thoughtless, or barbaric he nurses a superiority complex. It bewilders and disgusts him that violence is even a concept, especially so because the people "in the right" may have to harm others as well, either to defend themselves or to accomplish some greater "good". At the same time he nurses an inferiority complex because he feels that people can instantly have the better of him without even seeming to expend any conscious effort.

Yet as much as people confuse him, make him anxious, and even sometimes downright disgust him it is not at all unusual for him to develop an overwhelming infatuation for another person without he/she even knowing. He understands that even though he can't reliably assess the experience of another, they do have minds of their own and have just as novel an experience of life. They may be perplexing enough but the mere idea that they exist is marvelous to him, that countless thoughts and experiences can be occurring right in front of him. It is simply maddening to him that there are so many sensations out there being had that he can't share in.

There is one place where he is at home, so at home that folks think he must be imagining things: nature. He views all of the life he finds out in nature not just as subjects but as ones he can relate to. It isn't uncommon at all to find him carrying on "one-sided" conversations with horses, birds, flowers, or trees. In the forests where he chooses to live most of the time, trees are his most treasured friends as they are the wisest, most experienced individuals he knows. These ideas are so pervasive that he has synthesized the philosophy of the ancient Krean mages with his own religious ideas: that every living thing has a soul. They all think according to their own capacity. Some with little capacity and some with much capacity like trees. Trees are revered in a manner akin to ancestor worship, Drasil trees being a modicum of the mind of the Creator and arbiters of the secrets from the beginning of the First Wave, long before the War of the Chosen.

History

The Dark

It's somewhere on the coast of the little beauty of an isle, Caras. As Injera gifts her last few rays, a cacophony of different colors play across the horizon. For as far as he can see either way, Arnúndië Amor is fishing alone and enjoying the breeze, tasting the salt in the air. And here's a bite! But before he can even think to jerk and tug, a faint sound carries it's way over the hill, reminiscent of the death pangs of a faun.

That's no faun, he realizes as he listens again. His woman is well into her ordeal. Dread, anxiety, and pride mingle together and he thinks he is going to be sick. Without a further thought towards dinner he drops the rod and sprints home, barely able to believe he could trek two perries that fast without heaving.

"Well, you lazy bastard, I see you haven't got a single fish. What, did you expect me to eat air pudding when I finished pushing out this little curse you planted in me?"

"You don't mean that dear, just try to keep a level head. I can't believe the little one is here already... Are you okay? Let me draw some water from the stove. By Gondol, what in the bloody Disk am I supposed to do? Just watch you die?"

"Oh stow it you flowery little girl. Find me the tub and draw some water from the stove, and while you're at it go fetch some rags and wet them in the tub."

***********************************************************************************************

But Mithrea wasn't at all what Arnúndië and Ivieth expected. The boy was completely unresponsive and even if they opened his eyelids to take a look, the boy's eyes were mired in a grey film. Was he dead inside? Whatever "it" was, it didn't even cry, didn't seem to develop any recognizable personality for years. The boy just felt things with his hands, all kinds of things, and stacked them all day. Causing yet more distress, he couldn't walk until he was four and ran into everything anyways. But most perturbing all, was that he didn't even cry to signify that he was hungry.

Where was the person? Was this a curse? No laughter, no tears or cries, just quiet breathing and the occasional grunt. So they hadn't bothered to name him yet.

So I have a few questions:

1. Are Krean Mages something that can be approved yet?
2. Can you imbed Santharian colors in the text?
3. Aside from the issue of magic what do you folks think of the character so far? How do you like it?

1. I dunno, I'd have to check on that.

2. I don't see why not.

3. I haven't had a chance to read him yet.

Also, just a quick comment, could you change the red to a different color. I find it a bit hard on the eyes to read. Thanks. :)

Color changed. Should be easier to read now. Actually, I've been looking for a hue of brown that is easier on the eyes, to fit in with my CD's theme.

It looks like you're not completely done with him yet, but so far he looks pretty good, save for the couple of comments I wrote down. I'll bring up the magic thing to the rest of the mods, and hopefully we can get some sort of response.

I'll change your icon to the "In Progress" icon. Feel free to change it back when he's done. :)

So what's the word on Krean magic? I don't want to commit to anything before I know what is and isn't consider over powered, or whatever other expectations and trepidations there might be. Once we've got that squared away the rest of the CD should be easy to write up real quick, I just need to know how I'll be describing the whole magic issue in the history section.

I think I have a pretty sound idea of how Krean magic works, have been reading Coren's entries on it since well before it finally came up on the site... But of course I don't know how the mods here will expect me to describe it, how specific and vivid they need it to be in order for it to make sense. Just like with Ximaxian magic I'm sure there's a difference between just understanding it and being able to describe a spell properly when your character performs one.

So sorry. Was on another account was wondering why I hadn't heard back from people. Oops...

Anywho, it seems like not much has been said. Mainly the issue is that we don't have any magic experts active on the board at the moment. In fact, it seems like we barely have anyone active at the moment.  Undecided I know there are a couple of CD Mods who pop in from time to time, but again, no magic experts.

My life is pretty crazy right now, but when it slows down, I'll take a glace at the Krean magic entry and see what I think about it. :)

Hey, don't sweat it. You know me, I'm not itching that bad to get a CD approved, I guess some regulars here have probably noticed that every once in a while I try to write up a character that's without fail something hard to deal with (yeah it's my bad habit, hehe). A year ago it was some sort of prophet, late last year it was a character that not only practiced demonology but waltzed around with summoned minions, I've been trying to finish something really unique for a while and it's always been something a little off the wall and hard to approve. Oh well, it's been fun and eventually I'll work something out, maybe one of these times I'll write up the CD of the year like I've been gunning for.

Would love to RP a character with a congenital brain disorder like this one though, that would be a hoot right?
