Atrii smiled. "I would talk, but I have little to say, as always." He continued to walk. "But I am very glad we are finally underway again, I can't stand just sitting around."

Silence, Complete silence is the sound of a ranger about to end your life.

Shaint walked on through the heavy sands and light winds kicking sand twords the face and into the eyes of him and his party members making them often hurt and itch,

"Atrii, one who has little to talk about is quite un interesting to talk to we should be approaching the great city of Strata in time and you will have plenty of things to talk about.....fun will come while in the city but the duties we have come first"

Shaint spoke and kept walking he still seemed quite cool....the air around him was not as Gararion but the same as any other however he had not began to sweat....

Shaint's head drifted back to his folded arms and looked forward "so Desolate is the desert....if only life would flow through freely it could be such a nice place" Shaint smirked but then went back to a serious in thought frown....

A great many footsteps had been taken sence Shaint had last spoke... they where approaching the city of Strata...slowly threw the sand it became visable....Shaint smirked and looked over his shoulder "We approach Strata" he suddenly stopped and had a course of thought.....

"wait...we might have a problem.....a big party traveling into the city....especially with the many different races.....and someone saw us we might have problems about....."

Tristin After Qui left Lord Bobbo asked for the story to begin. "There are four ruling houses in Strata, " began the Tristin.  He paused when Lady Lucirina rose up and asked to be excused to ask Qui a question.  The Tristin thought this curious, but nodded.  He then continued after popping a date into his mouth and washed it down with some wine.  "Oscar, your special brand of wine is most excellent."

"Um.. thank you M'lord." Oscar replied, curious as well as to what Lady Lucirina wanted to ask Qui and then he stole a glance at Lord Bobbo to see what he was thinking.  But Lord Bobbo's face was unreadable.

The Tristin continued. "The four houses are as follows; The Ruling house, the Executing house, the Administrating house and the Inspecting house.  We Tristins were the head of the Ruling house.  The political and law makers of Strata.  Your family, M'lord Bobbo were the head of the Executing house.  Troas's family heads the Administrating house and the Graza's family headed the Inspecting house.

What my forefather did not forsee when he put the power of the Administrating house of justice which was to condem or put into prison any, including any of the heads of the other houses including my own, the Ruling house, that one would come along and not be willing to work side by side, but would want the power to rule.  That one was Troas.  By manipulation of certain facts, people and the underworld of Strata he trumped up charges against those who opposed his rise to power.  Your father was one of those.  When your father resisted and discovered Troas's plans, Troas had him and his entire family murdered, fortunately you escaped.  How I do not know, but you can tell me later.  Graza's family was bribed to go along with Troas.  His house ruled all of the trade going into and out of the city.  He could actually put the city into a deadlock.  Once that was accomplished and with your family out of the way.  He then attacked mine.  But before he could murder mine, my father took us into exile in Avennoria.  Troas then made himself supreme Ruler and the other rulers of the other three houses were either dead and replaced by Troas's puppets or were bribed or scared for their lives and allowed Troas to do as he pleased.  It has been two decades of his rule.  Over the last decade I and my father, who passed away just this last year, planned our return.  We began to search out those who were dissatisfied with Troas's rule and enticed them to join our cause.  We became the Rebellion.  Though we prefer the term Freedom fighters.  Now after this time we are ready to strike.  We have spies in the city. We know alot about Troas and his ruling power and his army.  Somethings we did not know.  Things such as that an heir of the Junakin house was still alive, or that Troas had secured the services of others.  Just who was that man that Bahar had told me was called Malok.  Do you know?"  The Tristin asked.

Qui Qui stood upon the top of the wall looking Eastward watching the slow but inexhorable advance of the sand cloud coming their way.  It blocks out the sun as it advances, he thought.  Then his thoughts strayed to Lady Lucirina. Why does she make me sweat?  Make me stumble over my own words and even thoughts.  She makes the deserts flowers and beauty pale beside her.  My heart beats faster whenever she is near and when she speaks, she takes my breath away.  But she is Lord Bobbo's lady! My thoughts will surely betray me eventually.  I must find a way to leave. I will not dishonor the Tristin or Lord Bobbo.

Suddenly Lady Lucirnia was standing next to him and asked him to teach him how to use the knives he had given her.  He was so startled that he almost fell off the wall. He walked back along the wall, giving space between them.  He stammered. "M'lady...M'lady you should not be up here.  You..You may fall and get yourself killed.  I could not bear such a thought.  Please M'lady go back down." he pleaded. His thoughts were just the opposite. Please stay up here and keep me company.  Your voice is like the sweet waters of an Oasis to a dry and thirsty man.  Your beauty outshines the desert night sky.

Suddenly Qui shook his head violently, as if to throw his thoughts far far away from himself. And he then sternly repeated his reply. "M'lady, I must request that you remove yourself from the top of this wall.  I will help you down.  Once on solid ground I will find an instructor for you.  To show you how to throw those knives I gave you.  I have too much to do."

Qui held out his hand to help Lady Lucirina climb down the wall.  He forced himself not to look directly into her eyes.  For he knew if he did, he would melt. Uncle Oscar once told me that when love came it would strike through me like a sword through a silk scarf.  I had laughed when he told me.  Now I know what he means.  It is much more than any man can bear.  I wonder how others can do it?  Just please do not look at me, M'lady and do as I ask? he pleaded in his thoughts.

Gararion stopped along beside Shaint and listened to the words that came from his mouth.

"This is true friend but I believe that this figure you saw was did not have good intention thus it is not tied with good people.  Unless this city is truely filled with evil then I think we shall have no problem entering.

Nevertheless if we do maybe we should be prepared to do a little saying of ones mind with something that humans prize so much....coin."

The elf stood smiling at Qui as he took a few steps back and spoke at her.
"M'lady...M'lady you should not be up here. You..You may fall and get yourself killed. I could not bear such a thought. Please M'lady go back down."
Lucirina was suprised over how Qui treated her, his words saying one thing while his eyes said another.
She smiled and was about to explain to him that it was rather difficult for her to fall down from a simple wall, having climbed many trees that were more tall and less secure than the wall she was now standing on.

"But One will not fall, do not worry....."

Her words cut short as he shakes his head and once more spoke to her, his tone more stern and hard than the first time.
"M'lady, I must request that you remove yourself from the top of this wall. I will help you down. Once on solid ground I will find an instructor for you. To show you how to throw those knives I gave you. I have too much to do."
Lucirina was not one to anger quickly but this was ridiculous.
Looking at him with a flash of anger in her green eyes she spoke once more, her voice having a soft yet icy tone.

"One understands if Milord is too ocupied to teach One the art of the throwing knives, and One appreciates that Milord will find One a instructor.
But there is one thing One want Milord to understand.
One is not a frail flower that need to be protected at all times.
One have survived alone for more than a human age, taking care of Oneself and One will not do something as ridiculous as fall down from a wall.
One is sorry for bothering Milord Qui and One will leave now...alone"

Turning on her heels and ignoring his hand the barefooted elf moved to the side of the wall and climbed down once more, her movements agile and fast.
Once she is down on the ground again she puts on the mocasins that Oscar gave her and started walking toward the tent of the Tristin once more, her movements giving away the anger she was feeling as her steps were fast ovr the sand.

Bobbo said nothing as Lucirina left. Inside his thoughts were racing. How can this be? Lucirina loves him? Or maybe the other way around? Or maybe both? he thought. He then reassured himself by thinking She would not leave me for him. She loves me too much as I love her. Bobbo had not let any bit of his thoughts be shown by his expressions or and outward sign, as he had learned to do all his hard life.

Bobbo listened in interest to the Tristin's tale of the houses of Strata. He nodded at each point and was startled by the evil of Troas.

"Certainly, my lord, we must create a new form of government when we win back our kingdom to prevent such a thing from happening again," he said when the Tristin finished.

In answer to the Tristin's question about Malok he said, "I do not know much about him except that he calls himself a 'fire druid,' whatever that may be."

"And now for the tale of how I survived these long years. After my father died, my mother realized that she could not stay in Strata any longer. She tried to escape. I am almost certain she was heading to Oscar, for I think she knew he was friendly to our cause. However, elven assassins caught her first. They shot her in the back with arrows and she died in the back allies of the city.

"Now I was still alive. The elves had thought that I would die alone anyway and didn't bother to kill me; I think they couldn't have beared to kill an infant child anyway. However, something happened then that they did not intend; I was found by a lowly thief, Juan.

"Juan, though he was a thief, was a good man. The man found me in the allies and felt compassion for me. He took me in and raised me as his own. True, we never had a lot of food, but I was raised safely.

"He must have supported our cause because he told me everything when I grew old enough to understand. He told me never to give in to Troas. He told me that I was the son of one of the old nobles of Strata who had been removed from power. He did not know which one I was from though.

"Then when I was 15, Juan was captured by Troas's 'Authorities' and condemned to death. There was nothing I could do and I watched from afar, tears in my eyes, as they hung him.

"Of course then I was on my own. Juan had tried to teach me his trade, but I was not stealthy enough and too clumsy to excel at thievery. There was nothing else for it, so I became a beggar.

"Yes, those next few years were hard. I barely had enough to eat. Every once in a while a generous soul would give me a copper that I could buy a loaf of moldy bread with, but not often. I became thin.

"The people began to complain about me. They said I was a nuisance and a vagrant. So Troas's men came and took me. They drafted me into the military. I will admit, I learned a lot about warfare in those years, but I will never forget the mistreatment I recieved from them. Never.

"Eventually my term was up and they got me out. I returned to begging. The people lost their faith in Troas's ability to deal with me, so they drove me out on their own, forming a small militia. I'm sure Troas was not happy about that.

"I have wandered the lands for several years since then. I have been through many hardships and pains, including the one that took my left hand . . ."

Bobbo lifted the stub of his left hand in explanation.

"Sorry for the gruesomeness of my tale, but it is the sad truth," said Bobbo.

Shaint smirked "I knew that my wealth from being an old hire warrior would indeed help me in a quest" Shaint's hand slipped a pocketbelt from a hidden compartment inside of his pack and he held it firmly "It's not big...but it's pure gold"

Shaint flipped the bag and held it in his tight fist Shaint hid it back in his bag and adjusted his sword's sheeth for a quick draw "....Shall we continue for I believe there is enough for the whole tavern of 'The Thirsty Herald' " Shaint took a step and continued walking slowly approaching from the east it was a fairly large gate....

Qui Qui watched silently as he watched Lady Lucirnia climb down the wall as if she were born to climbing. I should have listened to her, he thought. I did not mean to make her angry.  It's just that I am so confused.

Suddenly he scrambled down the wall, and ran toward Lucirina, "Wait!... M'lady. Please."  He reached out a hand toward her right shoulder to turn her around.

Tristin The Tristin listened to the woeful tale of Lord Bobbo and then looked over at Oscar.  "Oscar did you know Lord Bobbo's mother?"

Oscar thought a moment. "I am not sure, M'lord.  I had many dealings with many people over the years.  The ones that were associated with the Resistance were few, but I am sure word of mouth could have been a way for her to know of my existence and knowledge of my whereabouts and help to the Resistance."  Oscar glanced at Lord Bobbo.  "M'lord if only I knew.  I could have helped you out sooner and perhaps your mother would not have died.  Either way since you are here, though somewhat worse for wear, your mother's and Juan's deaths were not in vain."

The Tristin nodded and replied. "Truer words were never said my friend Oscar.  Lord Bobbo, I have learned throughout my years that Seyella, the Goddess of Destiny, takes us through many trials and paths before we fulfil our destinies.  I believe those trials and paths are meant to strengthen us, to help us learn from them, if we are willing.  Many see trials as something to be bitter about, others like myself and Oscar here, see trials as something to learn from.  If only we are willing to look beyond the situation we are currently in and try and see the 'big picture' as Seyella does."

He paused a moment and then continued.  "It may be that the skills you learned as a thief, as a member of Troas's army, and even the loss of your left hand, will all be used to help you regain your house and help me gain mine and finally overthrow Troas's and his regime of terror and deciet.  I saw you with 'Avenger' your swordsmanship is most expressive.  I believe the loss of your hand has given you skills with that weapon that a man with two may not have.  Your knowledge of Troas's army will be benificial in helping us plan on how to move against him.  Yes, I truely believe that you were sent to us at the right time and the right place.  However... I do have a question to ask.  It is more of a personal matter and I do not wish to offend you but I must ask it."

Oscar quickly said.  "In that case M'lords I will excuse myself."  He bowed to them both and walked out of the tent.

The Tristin continued.  "You say your mother was assassinated by elven assassins...Yet you seem to have chosen an elven woman as your lady.  It seems curious to me that you would trust any elves, considering..."  He paused and then continued.  "If I am bringing up matters that do not concern me, then I pray that you forgive me and I will not broach the subject again."

Oscar saw Lady Lucirina heading toward his way.  She looked and walked as if she were angry. I hope Qui has not done something... stupid  Then he saw Qui behind her and plead with her to wait. Oscar's face grew grave. What did Qui do?  Lady Lucirina looks awfully angry.  Maybe I can help smooth things over.  Oscar started to head toward them, a smile upon his face.

Bobbo smiled gravely as the Tristin explained his viewpoint on trials. He nodded and understood all he said.

In reply to the Tristin's question about elves, Bobbo sighed and said, "Elves are like men, some are evil and some are good. I have been hurt just as much by men as by elves and yet I still trust men. Just because they live longer than us and have pointy ears, that does not make them different. I do not believe people should punish an entire race because of what a few of their wicked do."

Lucirina stopped as she felt a hand on her shoulder and the pleading words of Qui, yet she didn't turn around.

"One already appologized for bothering you Milord, what else do you want from One?
Didn't Milord have much to do?"

Her tone just as icy as the one she used while talking to him earlier, he could feel her shoulder rising as she took a deep breath, as to control her temper. Small strands of long hair lifted by the breeze caressed over his hand, feeling like strands of the finest silk moving over his skin.
As Oscar approached Lucirina turned his head in his direction, making her whole mane of chesnut hair brush over Qui's hand and letting the soft scent of her move in his direction, a scent of wood and spring flowers.
As she spoke to Oscar her voice was cheerful once more and a soft smile rested on her lips, a smile that did not reach the green eyes that still had a spark of anger in them.

Gararion now looked apon this elf.

I'd never thought I would see a elf be so proud of having such a loot.  Surely my own coins are good cause for costs run high for one in my field and when one is on such a quest like myself thou needs a little help here and there when one can obtain it.  But to flaunt ones wealth so freely, and for an elf in that manner, how strange does this young ones mind act..

Gararion followed as they closen in on the gate of Strata....followed in silence....

Tristin "Ah, M'lord Bobbo. See, your trials have even given you wisdom concerning other races and more importantly has given you insight into the character and condition of the hearts of Ava's creations.  You are correct in what you say; there are evil and there are good."

The Tristin paused as he gathered his thoughts.  "A fire druid you say?  Troas must be getting desperate.  Fire druids are a sect who follow Forios.  They are usually not easily bought.  They have their own agenda.  They are also very rare.  My grandfather had gathered a large army and had rooted out their sect and killed, we thought, all of those who follow that old, antiquated religion.  Since he did not seem to stick around, he must have not been that powerful, or had not that many followers to come up against us.  How did he escape?  Through some magic I suppose.  It has been said that magicians and those who practice it need time to recover after using up such power.  It is probably the same with him.  We will not see him for awhile, but we may run into him again."  He paused again, then smiled and said.  "Shall we go and see what this sandstorm that Qui mentioned heading our way has stirred him up so?"

The Tristin rose, opened the tent flaps and waited for Lord Bobbo to do the same.

Qui Qui sighed, She is still angry with me. he thought.  Then as if he was struck by lightning her hair brushed across his hand.  He could smell her scent.  It made his blood boil.  Before he knew it, before he thought about it, before he could stop himself he said turning her around. "M'lady, I may die because of what I am about to do, but I must do this or I will die if I do not."   He then kissed her.  Her lips were velvety soft, her scent filled his nostrils and nothing in the world could compare to how he felt at that time.  But then the kiss was over.  He fell to his knees.  "Forgive me M'lady."  he repeated over and over again.  He stood up and ran toward his horse, jumped on and yelling for the gates to be opened he galloped out of the fortress.

Oscar Oscar saw the look in Qui's eyes.  He tried to speak but his tongue stuck to the roof of his mouth.  He watched in a faciniated terror as Qui kissed Lady Lucirina.  Then he watched Qui fall to his knees, then rise and jump upon his horse and ride away.  Oscar rushed up to Lady Lucirina.  Breathlessly he muttered to her. "Forgive him M'lady.  He is just a youth.  I do believe he has never done anything like that before and probably has never felt that way before.  I will tell you a secret.  Those knives he gave you were given to him by his mother to give to the woman whom he falls in love with and becomes his bride when the time came.  You have touched him like no other woman has...or ever will I suspect.  I also fear that we may never see him again. He has disgraced himself in the eyes of his Lord, his men and especially to you and Lord Bobbo, considering that you have already been...given.  I pray not... but who knows the hearts and minds of men but Ava herself."

Oscar looked back and saw the Tristin standing there watching also.  A frown upon his face.  Oscar wondered if Lord Bobbo had seen as well?

Lucirina felt the strong hand on her shoulder almost force her to turn around and face Qui, his face had a strange almost unreadeble expression and as he spoke his words made no sense to the elf.
"M'lady, I may die because of what I am about to do, but I must do this or I will die if I do not."
Her eyes grew wide as she felt him pull her even closer and kissing her. What in Avá's name was happening?!
She was too suprised and too shocked to say or do anything, letting him kiss her without opposing any resistance.
As he fell to his knees in front of her and begged for her forgiveness all she could do was continue staring at her with green eyes filled to the brim with confusion.
Before she could shake herself to reason once more Qui was already heading for the gate at full gallop and then leaving the fortress.
Slowly she lifted a hand to place it over her mouth, her lips still slightly warm and humid from the kiss she had recived.
As Oscar rushed to her side she looked at him as if she was looking at someone she didn't know, her eyes distant and filled with confusion, she listened to his words in silence.

"Forgive him M'lady. He is just a youth. I do believe he has never done anything like that before and probably has never felt that way before. I will tell you a secret. Those knives he gave you were given to him by his mother to give to the woman whom he falls in love with and becomes his bride when the time came. He has disgraced himself in the eyes of his Lord, his men and especially to you and Lord Bobbo, considering that you have already been...given. I pray not... but who knows the hearts and minds of men but Ava herself."

Her eyes grew even wider as she moved her hand from her mouth to her forearm and felt the cold hadle of the knife hidden there.
So it was a present of love... ment to be given to the woman he was to wed. And he had given them to her, a insignificant bard that he hardly knew but that had stolen his heart away.
And now, he was disgraced, on the run... escaping from his master the Tristin and from Bobbo... and from her.
Her eyes welled over in tears, how could she be so stupid not to notice what he was starting to feel for her, how could she not have stopped it?
She saw Oscar turn and spotted the Tristin in the opening of the tent...Had he seen everything? what would he think of her?
Covering her face with her hands she ran toward the tent she had shared with Bobbo, long sobs escaping her lips as she ran.

The group had now come to the great gates that keep unwanted people out of Strata.

Gararion looked at the gate and wondered if they would would be unwanted guests.  Gararion could easily pass through these walls un noticed if wanted but surely he couldn't do all the work for this party.

Gararion looked at Shaint.

"Is thou ready to depart with his treasures?  I do hope so."

Gararion waited for no reasponse before he anounced there arrival.

"Gatekeeper!  We seek entrance within the town of Strata for rest and supplies.  May we be let within the walls of your city?"

Qui Qui had galloped Eastward.  He had not gotten very far when he felt the wind and sand beginning to pelt him.  He had completely forgotten about the sandstorm.  Then the ground began to violently shake.  His horse reared up, and neighed loudly.  Qui looked around.  There was nowhere to go.  His thoughts were upon his men and those he left behind in the fortress.  He wheeled his horse around and raced back to the fortress.  He yelled. "Open the gates and prepare yourselves."

Seveal guards standing watch from atop the wall, yelled down. "Sir Qui returns. Open the gates."

Qui galloped through the gates, just as the sun was completely blocked out.  He heard the gates close then all chaos occured.  The desert floor began to shake, heave and cracks opened.  The sand pelted and pounded against the walls of the fortress.  Inside the courtyard it was black as night and you could not see your hand in front of you.

Qui jumped off his horse.  He heard men yelling from up above and then heard thumps on the ground.  As if the men had fallen.  Several thoughts came into his head.  He yelled. "Men head for the Eastern walls.  It will be better there.  Look for any wounded."  His other thought was Lucirina.  Where would she go?  He headed toward her tent.  The tent was being buffeted but still stood.  He yelled. "Lucirina, are you in there?"  The wailing wind and sand made it impossible for him to hear if there were a reply.  Then he heard voices say that they found men who were injured.  Qui took a glance at the Lucirnia's tent and then headed for the voices. My men, I must help my men. Lucirina is probably with the Tristin and Lord Bobbo anyway.

Oscar Oscar had stood there dumbfounded as he watched Lady Lucirina run toward her tent.  He could hear her sobbing.  Then suddenly he heard the guards voice say Qui was returning.  He looked toward the gates when all Coor broke lose.  The sun darkened, sand forced by more than gale force winds swept into the courtyard.  In a blink of an eye Oscar could not see his hand in front of his face.  He could hear voices but that is all. What in Ava's name is this? he thought.

Oscar headed back in the direction of the Tristin's tent.  He felt strong arms take hold of him and pull him into the tent.  "Oscar get into my tent." It was the Tristin.  Oscar quickly asked. "Sire, Lady Lucirina is in her tent.  What about her?"

"I and Lord Bobbo will go after her.  You stay here."

The Tristin walked outside of the tent.  The sandstorm had intensified.  He was blown against the rope and poles of the tent.  He steadied himself.  The sand stung his face. He went back into the tent.  "I have never seen such a sandstorm." He wrapped his turban around his mouth and face and motioned for Lord Bobbo to do the same.  Then he walked out again.  Suddenly the ground heaved, and cracked open.  The tent collapsed upon Oscar and Lord Bobbo.  Sand began covering the tent.  The Tristin turned and began to start to dig out the tent.  But the sand fell faster than he could dig.  He yelled for help.

Then out of nowhere Qui and several of his men appeared and began to help.  Qui asked the Tristin. "Is Lucirnia under there?"

"No, Qui she went to her tent after your...indiscretion."

Qui stood up alarmed.  "Sire I know I will face judgment from you and Lord Bobbo for my actions. But if your tent has collapsed then..."

"Yes go to her.  See if you can help her, my son."

Qui stumbled toward the direction he thought her tent was.  But the air was so filled with sand and it was so dark that he did not know if he was heading in the right direction. He fell to his knees, the sand and wind was not quite as strong near the floor of the courtyard.  He began to crawl toward Lucirina's tent.  His hands feeling the way, but his unprotected skin was soon cut and rivulets of blood flowed freely down them and his face.  Then he felt the fabric of Lucirnia's tent.  It had indeen collapsed. I should have stayed, he thought.  He cried out. "Lucirina, Lucirina can you hear me?"   Qui began to dig furiously, like a dog burying a bone.  He cried again, tears streaming down his face. "Lucirina, Lucirnia!"
