THE MARTENS AND WEASELS OVERVIEW

OVERVIEW

Martens and weasels are slender, agile animals. They often have bushy tails, and large paws with partially retractible claws. The fur varies from yellowish to dark brown, depending on the species, and, in many cases, is valued by fur trappers.

Overview. The following martens and weasels have been recorded so far in the Compendium:

ARDOL WEASEL, THE ("BLUE-TONGUE")
Native only to the Peninsula of Iol in the far reaches of North Sarvonia, the colloquially known ‘Blue-tongue’ is a subspecies of ardol, a semi-aquatic, extremely adaptable creature known to make its home around waterways all over Sarvonia. Averaging around a ped and two palmspans long, the Blue-tongue is the smallest of the ardol subspecies. Encounters with this shy creature are rare, but sightings are common from a distance. Blue-tongues, as well as other subspecies, live in family groups known as ‘clans’. Return to the top

ARMOURED HEDGEHOG, THE
The Armoured Hog is a large, heavily armoured spiked desert predator found in the open lands of western Nybelmar. It is known to not run its prey down with speed, as the heavy armour weights it down, but instead rely on its nose and stamina to overtake its prey. Return to the top

The Common Ferret

FERRET, THE COMMON
The Ferret, commonly found in forest and plains regions, is similar looking to the rat but belonging to the weasel family, varying in colour, at 3 palmspans for a male and 2-2.5 palmspans for a female. This creature is commonly domesticated to hunt small animals (e.g. rabbits) but is also owned as a pure pet for its cunning and smart antics. The male and female live seperately except in mating season (and even then they live seperately only staying long enough to mate). Ferrets are seen as smart, cunning and curious animals. The name "Ferret" and "Weasel", which is a cousin to the Ferret, is used as an insult in some areas. Return to the top

FIRE FERRET, THE ("SCORCHER")
"Scorcher" (Fire-Ferret) is the common name given to a sub-species of Ferret that lives in deep volcanic caves, usually near magna outcroppings. This Ferret was first recognized as a unique species due to its metallic droppings, which contain a high concentration of minerals from the surrounding areas. This Ferret is also noticeable due to the light flame which it emits through the end of its leathery tail. Although hard to find, the Fire Ferret has been researched extensively for its potential usefulness. Return to the top

LEAF FERRET, THE ("RASHER")
The Leaf Ferret, known as "Rasher" when tame, are a gliding version of the common ferret. The Leaf Ferret only lives in the Brownie Vale and unlike the common version only can be found in trees which gain them their common name. Leaf Ferrets also have the ability to glide between trees which allows them to never touch the ground. The tamed version of this animal is known as a "Rasher" and is used as transportation and as a hunting or war mount. Return to the top

MÉLOR'AÉL, THE ("SHADOW EYE")
The Melór'áel (plural is Melór'áel as well), literally translating into "Shadow Eye", is an elusive quadruped animal native to the Nybelmarian forests. This subtle little mammal swiftly glides through the trees unseen and has a range of very unusual abilities, be it a very flexible neck, the capability to "meld" with its environment and become practically invisible or the very unique and still unexplainable way to communicate with others of its kind through mental means.

The Mimsy

MIMSY, THE ("STRIPED BANDIT")
The Mimsy, also known as "Striped Bandit", is a medium sized mammal that inhabits most of the Sarvonian continent. It is about one ped long from snout to tail tip where the long bushy tail is one fore long. Being a very popular pet since it is easy to train and lovely to look at, the soft fur however has also made it a favourite target for pelt makers as they use it to make fur coats and thick warm blankets, to the distress of many children who fear their favourite pet might end like this. Therefore most domesticated mimsies wear a collar to keep hunters from killing them. Return to the top

ROLLING HEDGEHOG, THE
Rolling Hedgehogs are a rather spiky little creature found trough most of Caelereth. It is the smallest known Hedgehog species, and is known as a cowardly little creature that prefers to “roll” into a small ball with all the spikes pointing outwards instead of fighting. Return to the top

The Throwing Hedgehog is a small, spiky creature found throughout the southern half of Caelereth. The Throwing Hedgehogs most unique characteristic is its ability to release its spikes and "toss" them towards a potential predator.

WOLVERINE, THE ("KINNVI")
The Wolverine (or Kinnvi, also called Lesser Wolverine in comparison to the Great Wolverine) is a large powerful animal just like its larger relative. It is covered in grey silky fur that is very soothing to stroke. However, don’t let its warm comfortable fur fool you, this is one vicious animal. Wolverines are very territorial and can be almost as tall as most humans if standing on its hind legs. The largest Wolverine ever encountered was measured at close to 2 peds and 2 fores.

WOLVERINE, THE GREAT
The Great Wolverine appears somewhat like a small-sized bear. Their large, rounded head has small eyes and short rounded ears. Feasting mostly on frozen meats and bone, these furry creatures have a mouth full of thirty-eight sharp teeth. With short, muscular legs, the Great Wolverine has five toes on each foot with long, razor sharp claws. Like the typical wolverine, the males are usually larger than females, weighing from 9 to 12 hafebs, while females weigh from 5 to 10.
