Hello all!  This is one of the few times in which I would be able to log on until the coming Gnomesday, so I thought I'd make the most of it!
Okay - what, precisely, is the purpose or function of the magical formula within the Ximaxian magic system?  Are they really all that necessary?  For example, if a mage of fire desired to set an object aflame, he would merely focus upon the element of fire residing in that object's cár'áll and strengthen the xeuá links connecting the fire ounía within it while concentrating upon the property of heat, one of the physical representations of fire.  At least, I'm pretty sure that's what he would do; check me if I'm wrong.  This, I believe, would result in the conflagration of the target of the spell.  Where, I ask you, is the need for a formula within that work?  As Marv has said to me once before, magic is naught but mental concentration.  No staffs, no wands, just the mind.  Why then, are magical formulae necessary?

Some times, such objects can allow one to focus their mind better.  ie) Take your example.  Now a magus might find it easier if he has a point to focus all his efforts, like the end of a staff touching or almost otuching the abject that he/she wishes to set on fire.  Or he may find that he is better able to ease his mind if he meditate.  Some people meditate by making sounds, like Buddhist (if I am correct).  At least this is how I see it.  They are not needed, but are their to help people.  ie) Help a student achieve the desired effect untill he can achieve it without use of such things.

Magic is extremely difficult to handle, otherwise everyone could do it. That's why there exist various means to help people casting it - like a map helps you to find the right house somewhere in a town, though theoretically you don't need one.

Such means are reagents, magical formulas, spell books with casting descriptions and/or spell icons as shortcuts to name just a few - all that helps you to get the mind into the mood of concentration and focusing. It's not directly necessary for the spell, but helps your preparation for the casting. There are only very few mages I'd say who can neglect all that completely - those are the most powerful, others mostly require some sort of anchor to make their casting possible.

The Thergerim, for example, as a race seem to REQUIRE reagents in their spell-casting.  They view them as tools to get the job done, rather like any work:  tunnelling, casting, forging, cooking, or hunting... just as a spade, a hammer, a knife, a bow are all taken for granted as necessary in those tasks, so too a magical implement must be ready to hand in order to 'perform' a work of magic.  :hammer

It's a rather matter-of-fact perception which has little truck with the more mystical side of magery.. and secretly, I suspect, most dwarves think ANYONE could be a mage if he or she simply had the dedication, patience, and excellent memory required...  :p

:lol  Arti you made my day :lol

Magic formulae are comparable as said by Gar to the mantras that budhism uses, when you hear a budhist say the ohm in meditation you know he is trying to reach higher realsm with the crown chakra, when you hear a mage shouting some uncomprehensible words at you... better flee if you don't want to end in a undesirable situation...

Hello all! It's been a minute since I poked my nose in here. Can't remember if I ever did anything useful.

Ah, too bad that internet is so restricted in China, Ferra. Can't be much fun surfing the web that way if Big Brother's watching you... Hope you enjoy your stay nevertheless!

Hi, dear Arti and other developers!

This year I am in China and cannot use any Google services including YouTube. For this reason I stopped uploading new Nepris videos. I can also not read any comments there.

It just crossed my mind that this information might be useful to you.

Cheers

Short note: We had a bit of downtime Friday/Saturday night due to a server change. Site went online first, message boards took a while longer - now everything should be back to normal.
