Found another disease when I was researching some stuff for my history.  This excerpt is from the hisroty tables of Southern Sarvonia, in the era of SanthWar III (the last one, called the Coming of Coor'Melor).  The yellow bit is the only really important bit:

Quote
288 b.S. The Defeat of Hourelin
Although the orcs took Carmalad, an outbreaking clan war for power between the orcish hordes prevents the races living south of Carmald of further assaults from the darkfriends. Gathering a joined army, consisting of human, elven and dwarven forces, the alliance strikes back, retaking Carmalad only a few months after the orcs have taken control over the haven, repelling the orcish hordes to the Silvermarshes and finally defeating the main forces there and at the fields further north which later on become known as the Blood Fields. The orcish chieftain Hourelin dies at the battlefield.

In this respect very much credit has to be given to the Erpheronian heroine Caeorphynn of Carmalad who loses all her ancestors at the Battle of Carmalad at 292 b.S. Caeorphynn has refused to leave the continent without having taken revenge for the death of her family, instead she flees south and finally participiate in the counterstrike, freeing Carmalad and killing more than six dozens of orcs by her own hand. She is well known for her courage to ride with Hourelin's severed head on top of her spear into the midst of the orcish horde, chasing the troops into all directions with her presence only. Caeorphynn dies weeks after the defeat of the orcs at a malicious illness named Urgroum's Call, a feverish infection of which many brave men die who have fought in close combat against the hordes of the darkfriends.

Thought it might be useful  :)

Ooh, nifty!  Thank you, thank you, thank you!  This could lap over into the gray area of mundane healers practicing mystical stuff--orc taint corrupting the warrior's soul, praying over warriors who've fought with orcs...Thank you, Grunok!

'Kay, I'm bored of diseases for now, so I'm gonna start a tidbit on diagnostic tools.  Thanks goes to the Masterbard for providing the impetus to start this thread.

Urine flasks--urine was analyzed for:
  • Color (colorless to dark yellow or brown, or even blue in certain disorders)
  • Clarity (clear to turbid with clots, pus or sand)
  • Odor (odorless, putrid, rancid, or ammoniacal)
  • Taste (sweet, sour, bitter, tasteless)
  • Viscosity (thin to pasty)
  • Quantity
Of course, all of this was very subjective, and likely varied widely from one practitioner to another.

Calipers--a pair of curved tongs joined at one end, like a very delicate crab's claw.  These could measure head diameter; this was crucial in discovering someone's personality, or at least how big their head was.

Scales--different sizes were employed for weighing nearly anything that could be weighed, from specimen samples to organ weight at autopsy.

Scarificator/Lancet--used to draw a drop of blood, which would be smeared between two of the examiner's fingers and studied in a similar fashion as urine.

...And, maybe just a blurb about some treatments.  This will mushroom soon, I promise!

Simples--made of herbal ingredients, taken raw or in teas.

Bezoars--stone formed in the guts of ruminants (cows, goats, etc.), thought to be an antidote to any poison if either ingested whole or dropped into the contaminated food or drink.

Bloodletting--application of leeches to drain blood.  Precise placement of leeches according to the malady detected often had symbolic relevance.

Masterbard, is it okay with you if I put a link to your Treacle entry here?  I'm lazy, and this would make it easier to reference in the future.

Absolutely - though I think I prefer 'theriac' ... or perhaps our own "Thariac", aka "King's Heal-all"?  :) (wicked grin)

Oh, and I'm SO glad you added urine flasks and simples!  I kept meaning to IM you about them and you've beaten me to the punch.  Bravo!

Here's my first draft.  It's still very rough, and I acknowledge that is more just a list than an actual entry submission.  All the same, could I ask for comments on this part, please?

Survey of Herbal Remedies of Present-Day Santharia

FEVER, COLDS, INFECTION
Anemonel Flower (Aelvásh Merín)
1) Dried leaves are crushed, soaked with Anemonel petals, then mixing with other herbs that help neutralize the poison in Anemonel-->Aelvásh’már (liquid)

  • Reduces hives and swelling from sometimes fatal allergies.
--Found in forest regions in Northern Sarvonia

For moderate strength, it is common to use about 200 orms.
    2) Powdered lotann leaves, about 3 ladles.
    3) Fresh alth’ho roots, about 15. (other grasses may be substituted)

  • Boil the water in an iron pot. When it's boiling, add the lotann leaves, the alth’ho roots, the sunflower pedals, the icemilk sap and the mil'no leaves. Put a lid in the pot and let it boil for 35 minutes. Make sure that leaves and roots are cooked asunder. If not, squash them with a fork, and boil 5 minutes more. Well, that looks actually quite spiffy and pretty well researched, Kelancey! :D - Must have been quite a lot of work to collate all that!

Well, on the matter of integration (notices that the last post moves a bit away from this Forum's topic, which deals with History): Well, how about trying to get that information now into entry form into the Miscellaneous section? I could imagine it to look as follows:

A general introductory paragraph or two, then we make various sections, just as you split them up here:

- Fevers, Colds, Infections (actually this list sounds like a list of illnesses, not remedies ;) - so you might change that)
- Antivenin and Antidotes
- Psychotropics and Stimulants
- etc.

Each section would be accessible through quicklinks from the top of the page. Ideally each section would also contain a short introduction what are Stimulants, Antidotes etc.

Then we'd list all the remedies in alphabetic order similar to what you did here already, but elaborate the details one after the other. E.g. in smaller sub-sections on Preparation, Locations where they can be found, Effects, so that we have a nice compact paragraph on each remedy with everything we need.

That's quite an undertaking to get that all done, but I could imagine it to go up that way and be a tremendous help for everytone who needs a cure - so it would be a life-save thread! ;) You could try your hand on the first section for example if you want, Kelancey, and we then could already integrated it. Or pick specific remedies from all section and add them bit by bit, we don't need to have all at once, but something elaborated to give the whole official page a start would be cool...  cool

At any rate: fantastic work so far!  thumbup

Thanks to both of you, Artimidor and Nsiki, for your comments and advice!  I've started a new thread in the Misc. forum just on herbal remedies.  It's gonna take me a little longer to do the herbal remedy stuff than I'd initially imagined, but I'm enthused to work at it.

Once again, thank you both for your guidance!

*Valan filches some parchments from around the corners of the pile before sauntering off attempting to look casual and tripping over the hem of his robes.*

I'm amazed you can see the Altario projects pile considering it is dwarfed by my unfinished projects. For which I apologise.

I think they're under that big pile of unfinished Altario projects.  :)
