@ Art: I assume now, that the Manthria map is the Master map from which all measurements of distances are taken from or through it they are defined. It does not work with the Santharia map if (I don't have a major mistake in my calculations, which I will check again), but the distances are roughly the same as we put them down ages ago. Just slightly bigger. (Dragons Maw-Cape Strata is now 5600strals instead of 5000 strals). But I think we can live with that.

New day, new measurements..

I checked it again, and the scale on the Santharian map does say different things  than the Manthrian map . The distance from that bay near Saloh to Ciosa is roughly 1000strals on the manthrian map, 540 on the Santharian (taking the scale there)

I guess I should take the manthrian map as ultimate reference?

I guess the Manthrian map is still the reference, as whenever entries are written the measurements found there are applied to describe the distances. If definitions aren't put on the site in a way, then all work that went into it unfortunately drowns in the Forum depths.

Well, that was exactly what I planned to do, not an entry which can go up to the site, but a list of references, so that every one can easily interpolate from there what distances he/she needs. Maybe that could be either a sticky or a link in the main first post "How to do places"

I take then the Manthria map as distance reference for all other maps as well.

This is a very useful thread!

I am confused about the size of the continents however:

Is N-S Nybelmar (495) distance shorter than the diameter of the Autrian Woods (593)? Surely that cannot be right? Oh dear! The continent seems to be A LOT smaller than I imagined...

Talia, I cannot get my head around these measurements. If you look at "the World of Caelereth" map, the distance between E-W Nybelmar seems a lot longer than the Bay East of Saloh  -  Ciosa ( Gebl‘s Nose) 1000 strals ...

I thought Nybelmar was roughly the size of the Sahara desert?

Oh yes, I miscalculated at one point (just exchanged two numbers) and all was wrong. You should not do such stuff when tired. Will change it asap.

I'm just glad somebody else is doing all this map work!  hug The only way I can get my head around distances is when somebody says "it's about the size of your head/foot/Athens/the distance between the bathroom and the bedside when one has to answer a call from nature"... :P

It was about a factor 10 wrong! Just tell me, which distances (from which town to which town etc ) you want to have, I'll do a bunch for every map, but not all is possible of course.

Just a note: I think that this should go on the site as a general table e.g. in the Places section, perhaps under the category maps, because everything that only is on the Forum gets lost at some point. Too many sticky threads make the Forum difficult to handle and nobody will eventually notice the sticky topics, plus what is on the site and isn't entirely correct has a tendency to be noticed and get corrected. Therefore I'd like to put it in the Places Forum, so that you can always look it up.

The entry then would be called "Distances in Caelereth", and aside from this list of distances per continent (which can be constantly expanded) it should have a brief introduction, e.g. on how difficult it is to actually measure distances, that maps aren't entirely easy to obtain and draw them correctly, that we try to give an approximation nevertheless.

Also important to put into such an entry would be details on how long it takes people approximately to ride e.g. 100 strals, that couriers change horses at stations and can deliver important messages in this and that time. Just to have the most important key things mentioned in the entry based on a bit of research. If we get all that into an entry on the site, this would be perfect, and would solve quite a bit of a problem that arises regularly every now and then.

Well, I thought  that this is just something for developers and you could either make it sticky or link to it from the main thread. So it would not get lost in the forum's depth. I had an idea for Santharia to make an entry out of it (a man who uses our doves to measure the distances from A to B), but not for the entire stuff. I don't think , that we need to add more distances to each post, for how many should be there, when is it enough? I explained how to make up the distances, so everybody can do it himself. It is different, if new areas are developed.

Of course do we need an entry about how long it takes from e.g. New Santhala to Marcogg, by foot, by horse etc, could be a book ordered by the king (yes! bio!) , who had his own riders running and testing how long it takes from A to B. I'm tempted to set up a proposal, but I have not the interest in doing it myself. This determining the "developer's distance is enough work! ;) (More than I thought, as always!)
