Chymicals and Elemenes

The ‘Tabula Peryodiq’ of Santharia

those substances of matter in solid, gaseous, or liquid form
as they are known to the sentient beings of the Kingdom

All substances belong to one of the four Elemental categories – the most commonly-agreed upon have been used, as there is still much dispute among alchemists as to the exact classifications.  Where there are two names given, the first is Gnomic or Tharian, the second the Terran nomenclature.

Please see the Tabula Elemene’s index page for the ‘Great Diamante’, which shows many (if not all) common substances in relationship to each other as gnomish alchemists have classified them within the Trej Blaks (three of our four Elements. Gnomes consider Fire as a fourth grouping but less important than the other three) Some Trigusteme (practical, or applied) alchemists have adopted two broad categories for substances; aceeds (AH-seeds - ‘peaks’) or alchalines (AL-kal-eye-nez - ‘vales’).

These Gnomic words are used to describe an esoteric way in which the fluid forms of the substances interact with each other on a peculiar sliding scale, and in which, for some mysterious reason, the centre or ‘balance point’ is defined by – of all things – purple kail.   Common natron and saleratys are also set at the centre of this scale; for further details we suggest you contact your local gnomish alchemist.

Broadly, however, aceeds seem to be substances from which the human (or gnomish) body detects a burning or sour sensation, while alchalines are ‘softer’.  Blood, milk, urine, saliva, and so on are all grouped as alchalines,  while Wudaigre, Kitraure juice, Spirit of Etherus , and Baveran Aceed (produced when salts are converted to soda ash and the waste product dissolved in water) are all classified as aceeds.

YRTH PERYODIQA (Earth Substances)

Gold - a metallic, shiny yellow substance, soft and malleable, considered valuable for its scarcity and resistance to corrosion (from the Gnomic 'korrude', to decay or break down)  Used primarily in making jewelry, coinage, tooth substitutes, some magical reagents
Silver - a metallic, shiny greyish substance which tarnishes easily but is useful and not toxic (Gnomic 'toxik', meaning 'poisonous')  Also commonly used for jewelry and coinage
Copper - rust to orange to coral-coloured metal, easily workable - a common and inexpensive metal of many usages.
Verdigris / Granther-copper  (copper carbonate) - greenish-blue, or 'aged' form of copper
Tin - white or grey soft inexpensive metal, found in small cubic shapes - often used for pots and cheap 'tinware'
Lead - soft greyish metal, resists corrosion, poisonous
Zincum / Draketooth (zinc) – soft silvery metal found in sharp crystals
Bronze (Tin, Copper) - an 'alloy' (Gnomic 'al-oi', or 'combination') of a metallic brown colour, inexpensive to produce
Brass   (Tin, Copper, Zincum/Zinc) - an alloy, dull metallic gold colour
Pewter ( Tin, Copper, Ithmid/Antimony) - an alloy, dull silvery-grey colour, soft metal
Mithril (native to Caelereth and Middle-earth – a sort of super-platinum) - bright and untarnishable silvery colour, highly resistant, stable, flexible, and so on. No longer actively mined in Sarvonia, or so the Thergerim claim.  Extant supplies are almost all made up into weapons, armour, jewelry, crowns, and the like.
Blood-ore (hematite, iron oxide) - rich crimson crumbly ore, one of the sources of iron, the multipurpose workhorse metal.
Iron (takes various forms on Caelereth) - blue, black, red, white, etc. ores available
Steel (tempered iron) - a stronger form of iron which requires high temperatures, among other conditions, to reproduce
Royalrock (manganese) - a peculiar substance which stains a Santhran-purple hue
Alsetite / Lodestone (native to Caelereth, quasi-magnetite) - contains an unusual force which always draws towards the centre of Caelereth.  Highly useful in navigation, though more so over earth than water.
Platinum - strong silvery metal, dissolves in aqua regia but otherwise does not tarnish or wear.  Similar to mithril but not as useful.
Fyrite (native to Caelereth) - a pink to orange metal, quite decorative and often used for inlays.
Heme (native to Caelereth) - a flexible metal which comes in various shades of green, from moss to birch leaf.  Also a decorative metal.
Aurium (native to Caelereth, quasi-gold) - an expensive golden metal mostly used where the appearance of gold but the strength of steel is required, such as a king's battle helm, or a protective gorget
Chalk (calcite, limestone) - there are too many different uses to list for this soft whitish stone, but everyone knows it from their childhood as a rock which can be used to scribe marks on any dark, flat surface
Alum (a mineral salt) - strongly astringent, found in rounded, opaque crystals.  Non-toxic, important in tanning and some culinary applications.
Mithrilan (another mineral salt) - a silvery liquid metal - see the entry for further details.
Seruse (white lead, lead carbonate) - a flat, pale, spongy substance - also toxic, should be handled with care
Ithmid (antimony) – a poisonous metalloid, black but with irridescent shimmers of colour along its surface
Stibium (sulphide of antimony) this was used as a cosmetic commonly, but alchemists are warning against its use, claiming it is toxic longterm
Olibanum (frankincense) a type of scented tree resin which can eaten, burned, used as kohl, etc.
Arznikh  / Quer-garlick (arsenic) – very poisonous, but recognizable by its strong scent, reminiscent of rotten garlick.
Orpiment (yellow arsenic sulphide) – poisonous, but an excellent yellow pigment much in demand by artists.

GAEZ PERYODIQA (Air Substances) – most gaseous substances which are known are classed under Air, understandably.  You must take our word for it that certain other forms of matter may also fall into this category due to esoteric rules and specifications of gnomish alchemy.

Flojiston / Petregaez (nitrogen) - not much is known about this gaseous substance except its name; Gnomes are currently performing euxperi to determine more information.
Aer / Aeraeus (air, mainly oxygen) - believed to be given off by plants, observed to be consumed by flame, necessary to support life
Aermatre (mercuric oxide) - reddish substance from which aeraeus can be extracted
Drakesbreath (helium - extractable from natural gas in swamps and marshes)
Marsh miasma / swampgas / peatfarts (mostly methane - also hydrogen, ethane, propane, butane, and pentane, as well as carbon dioxide, nitrogen, helium and hydrogen sulfide.  Not all of these are known/ observable/distinguishable in Caelereth!)
Steam (water vapour) - the vapour that water produces when heated.  When cooled, it becomes water again, with no change.
Cask-rime (cream of tartar, potassium bitartrate) This whitish substance can be scraped from old wine casks and is primarily used with salatyrus as a leavener for bread.
Bittergreen / Zharnikh (arsenic, copper arsenate) - a toxic green substance associated with Arznikh
Wudaigre (wood vinegar / acetic acid / pyroligneous acid) Obtained by dripping water through burnt wood, usually a yellowish-amber mildly aceedic liquid with a tart, flavourful taste which can be used to make or preserve food

AQUIA PERYODIQA (Water Substances) – usually, but not always, liquid substances are in this group.

Water - the queen of liquids, and the standard against which all others are measured - a clear and refreshing substance which is surely the gift of the gods
Alcohols - produced and distilled in many ways from many organic substances
Quicksilver (mercury) - a silvery fluid, produced from cinnabar - poisonous!
Cinnabar (mercury sulphide) - a grainy scarlet ore found in association with hot springs - poisonous
Saleratys ( sodium bicarbonate, baking soda)  a whitish powder used as a leaven for breads and other baking
Salt (sodium chloride) - occurs as rock salt, also produced from distilling seawater
Kobald / Goblat (cobalt) - found as a grey-blue flaky ore, usually associated with desert areas, makes a rich blue pigment
Camphor - thick white resinous/waxy substance exuded from certain trees (needs entry!)
Spirits of Pine (turpentine) - an excellent solvent (from the Gnomic 'solv', meaning to vanish) extracted from tree resins
Kohl (antimony trisulphide) - also known as Stibium, used to darken eyebrows and lashes
Spirit of Etherus / Etheric Aceed (acetic acid, vinegar) - this is similar to Wudaigre or Vinaigre, another type of mild aceed.
Baveran Aceed (muriatic acid / hydrochloric acid) - produced by mixing salt with vitriceed
Potash (produced from wood ashes) - a strong 'vale' useful in making soap

IGNUPYR PERYODIQA (Fire Substances) – many of the aceeds are classified in this category, but there are a number of others which also lend themselves to a fire label, whether obviously or otherwise.

Malthanune (vitrium, vitriol) Also known as “Vitrinune”,  it appears as bluish-green nodules, slightly reflective but powdery.  Very dangerous, do not touch with bare hands!
Vitriceed (sulphuric acid) - found in mines containing high levels of brimstone and volcanic areas
Brimstone / Coor'sbreath (sulphur)  -yellow crystal,  melts to blood-red liquid, burns blue with a foul aroma
Ithildin (native to Caelereth and Middle-earth) – a silvery metal, which phosphoresces (from the Gnomic 'phozphor', 'glowing')  by moonlight
Aquia Vortiz (nitric acid – nitrogen dioxide) a product of combustion, mixed with water.  Many of these 'combined' elements are unique to the Gnomes, who have not shared the exact processes necessary, preferring instead to market them as products.
Aquia Reghi (nitric & hydrochloric acid) – see Aquia Vortiz, Baveran Aceed
Karphol-aceed (carbolic acid/phenol – byproduct of coal oxidization, also from benzene) - handle with care
Benza / gum benzoin (benzene) - a colourless, sweet-smelling liquid which burns well
Bitumen (petroleum) - dark, sticky, organic - believed to be vast deposits of dragon fewmets
Ash-aceed, lye (sodium hydroxide – strongly alkaline)
Torch-ore (magnesium) - whitish soft ore, very flammable
Saltpetre (potassium nitrate) - found on cave walls, dungheaps, morjual waste as yellowish-white crystals with a very sharp, salty taste.  Do not ask how this was determined.
Graphein  (graphite, common form of carbon) - a highly slick black soft material, protects from certain energy discharges, such as magical errors, and can mark on light surfaces rather as chalk does on dark
Querrock / Luminite Metal (neo-plutonium) - this is a silvery metal which has an irridescent glow ranging from green to blue, and is naturally warm to the touch, in small quantities.  It can be melted at very high temperatures and formed into jewelry, which retains its peculiar glow, but prolonged contact has recently been discovered to cause illness: irritation and even burns of the skin, and a feeling of nausea (this illness is known as 'Luminita'ven'suti' in Nybelmar).  Soluble in various aceeds, but great care should be taken.
Pitchblende / Luminite Rock (neo-radium, uraninite/pitchblende) - appears as a black rocklike substance with a greasy lustre, in irregular bubbles and bulges.  It also gives off a blue-green glow, not visible by daylight.  Can be carved like other rocks, but also causes the same skin burns and feeling of sickness.
Ghostine / Luminite Clay or Luminite Wax (unique to Caelereth, some properties of thorium) - a malleable substance resembling a greasy black clay, which has the characteristic baveran-greenish blue phosphorescence.  It can be molded into various shapes but does not dry as genuine clay does, and despite its 'wet' texture,  burns with an extremely hot, bright light.  Useful primarily in very small quantities in glass manufacture, and in the production of some aceeds.
Kerostone (Coal-oil, oil shale) - an oil-impregnated shale or flaky rock, very flammable

THIS SECTION STILL NEEDS EXPLICATION, all else done!

PNEUTRAE (‘Peaceful Substances’ – neutralize both aceeds and alchalines, or even poisons)

Natrun ( natron, mostly saleratys & soda ash)
Nahsalt / Saleratys(sodium bicarbonate, baking soda)
Bezoar (native to Caelereth, a natural substance similar to bone found in certain animals)
Jeyriall’s Milk (magnesium hydroxide suspended in water – from brucite, associated with marble)
Charash  (activated charcoal, highly porous form of carbon )

Thank you so much Judy!  Just pondering about one element, Mercury.  How would alchemist handle this or harvest it.  Then again, the romans did so I guess its not a problem.  Perhaps a special tool?

Edit: Another idea.  You don't have to use it though.  How about platnium belived to be a mixture of gold and silver.

Looks good! But are there Bitumen in Sarvonia?

There had  better be - it's a basis for all sorts of chemical materials.    I don't think gnomish chemistry (er, alchemy) would be possible without the petroleum distillates from natural tar sources...

More ideas?  Everything appreciated!

Well, i have never seen anything mentioning any kind of tar sources... (petroleum can be made from tar? i thought you needed oil! phew!) which means we will have to invent one. And lets make it a bit non-terran, while we're at it. Who has ideas?

Oh, my chemistry could be off there too.  I'm thinking of stuff like Byzantine 'Greek Fire' (which may have included naphtha, quicklime, sulfur, and niter), tar pits, peat compactions, shale beds... everything all mixed up together.... :P  However, Google informs me that bitumen is the heaviest and thickest form of petroleum / hydrocarbon, so I'm not incorrect there...

Wiki:  "Bitumen is a black, oily, viscous material that is a naturally-occurring organic byproduct of decomposed organic materials. Also known as asphalt or tar, bitumen was mixed with other materials throughout prehistory and throughout the world for use as a sealant, adhesive, building mortar, incense, and decorative application on pots, buildings, or human skin. The material was also useful in waterproofing canoes and other water transport, and in the mummification process toward the end of the New Kingdom of ancient Egypt. It is also flammable...."

Hmmmm.... Caelerethian 'bitumen' could be a non-geological source...  like.... mmmm....  how about dragon dung!     :D

I'm not kidding - we seem to have a plethora of dragons and drakes around Santharia, so why not put them to use?  Their fewmets would amount to quite a bit of solid material after the centuries, and would doubtless be both 'organic' and 'flammable'...

Large deposits of fewmets would eventually become a thick, viscous, smelly mass.  Humans stumbling (hopefully not literally) upon this substance and experimenting with it would find immediately that it was flammable - there you have it!   Not only practical, but alchemically appropriate, if you want a nice little easter egg to bear things out.

Brilliant, or not?

Astoundingly, i continue to be amazed at your bursts of creativity. One would think i ought to get used to them by now...

This does set a rather high standard for me to follow when the Oil Baron Dwarves are written.... *sighs* ;)

You are so kind!  So, you like it?  I give you the credit for inspiring me to think 'outside the barrel' (oil barrel, in this case)...

That's brilliant! (pun intended)

I guess that dragon dung would make an exceptionally hot fire.  Maybe Kuglimz farmers (the non-nomads in the Celeste lowlands--there are lot of drakes in the nearby mountains) could use it to "flame" their fields after harvest, thus improving soil quality.  Just a thought... :D

How many places really have enough dragons around to be able to find regular supplies of their poo though? Tee hee hee.  Or would it simply be a very valuable and rare fuel which was only used for a few things?

It builds up over centuries (think how long a recorded history Santharia HAS!) and is produced copiously.  I think we'd have enough for our medieval/renaissance usages - it's not as if we are burning it in internal combustion engines all over the face of the disc, after all... :)

Remind me to add it to the Resources list, and hopefully to the map at some point....

Brilliant! I've been wanting something like this for awhile now and actually considered doing it myself at one point, but you saved me the trouble. Now we are definitely building a strong basis for gnomish entries!

Just wondering... would this turn into a periodic table.  That would be cool.  We could have a picture with them all and you could click on them to be taken to a short description.  Just a thought.

Hi, dear Arti and other developers!

This year I am in China and cannot use any Google services including YouTube. For this reason I stopped uploading new Nepris videos. I can also not read any comments there.

It just crossed my mind that this information might be useful to you.
