Ezorakk'lagdan, Scourge of the North
«
on:
12 December 2008, 13:49:20 »
An idea that has been brewing in my head for awhile...an intelligent and powerful dragon who ruled the north for many years before finally being destroyed and raised as an undead monster who currently haunts the Mists of Osthemangar.
Overview:
Ezorakk'lagdan, called the Scourge of the North, was a mighty Ice dragon who dominated and ruled the far northern lands of the Caaehl'heroth peninsula during the years of approximately 180 b.S to 410 b.S. As one of the most powerful and cunningly intelligent creatures of the North, he made his home in the many ice caverns of what is now known as the Icelands of Aeh'Os'th'er'oc. More than a simple predatory beast, Ezorakk'lagdan was a cunning and fiercely intelligent creature who was worshiped as a god by the Osther-Oc barbarians and was eventually enslaved by the dark master of Osthemangar during the Third Sarvonian War. Eventually, Ezorakk'lagdan rebelled against the powers of the tower and led a band of orcen, dark elf and demon rebels against the evil powers in a fateful cataclysmic war. The legends are told among the Osther-Oc shamans that Ezorakk'lagdan fought the mighty dark master of Osthemangar himself and was destroyed. It is said that the dragon's spirit was so powerful that it couldn't be vanquished completely. Instead, it was merged with the Mists and that Ezorakk'lagdan is forever bound to the tower and cursed to haunt it until the end of the world.
Appearance:
In life, Ezorakk'lagdan is often pictured as a massive beast, more than 25 peds in height and slightly over 55 peds in length from tip of his head to the tip of its tail. Covered in brilliant irridescent scales of bluish and white, the ice dragon was a monstrously beautiful beast whose countenance instilled fear and awe in all those who looked upon him.
Like most ice dragons, Ezorakk'lagdan thrived in the cold environments of the far northern Sarvonian continent. His hide was tough and withstood all manner of cold and bitter wind. His head was a massive, with a mouth easily enough to fit three to four people inside (demonstrated on more than one occasion, according to popular orcen lore).
In flight, Ezorakk'lagdan loved to soar high above the mountain peaks of the Aeh'Os'th'er'oc lands in search of his favored prey - pinnip seals and frost wyrms. During clear skies, the great drake's flight could be seen for miles away. The flapping of the beast's wings made a heavy whoosh sound sending men and beast alike scurrying for cover on the ground. Ezorakk'lagdan enjoyed the fear he instilled in what he considered lesser beings and he took his time circling lower and lower until his great body touched the ground with a tremendous thump that shook the surface like a minor earthquake.
The great dragon's claws would grip the ground and curl under leaving deep chasms easily a ped in length. His legs were as tree trunks, with thick cords of muscle rippling underneath his gleaming blue-white scaly skin. His neck was long, with his head in constant motion, swaying from side to side in search of prey or danger (not that he feared much danger to himself anyway).
In life, the great Ezorakk'lagdan was known in orcen lore as the grandest of ice dragons, and perhaps akin to a god himself. In death, his wondrous appearance is less about the creature he was and more about the vile, horrid appearance he is now.
More recently, whispered stories among the Osther-Oc tell of a massive beast that haunts the Mists of Osthemangar. The shamans have collected numerous accounts of a large predator that roams the mists, half hidden and obscured by the thick fog, whose very presence instills great fear. It is said that the great beast is the long dead Ezorakk'lagdan.
The undead dragon has been described in different ways over the centuries. Many accounts are fleeting with little great detail as a sighting of the creature sends most victims running for their lives. However, most accounts agree that the dragon's appearance now is but a shadow of his former glory. The beast is a walking skeleton with tattered wings and a hide stretched over the bones looking to rip and tear at any moment. His head is a half skull with several what look like dark burn marks upon it. It is said that these wounds were the result of the fatal battle between the dragon and the Master of the tower long ago.
Ezorakk'lagdan stalks the Mists like a great ghost enshrouded in the thick fog. His pallid colored bones are hidden quite well within the mist and witnesses can never get a full look at the beast. His eyes shine with a hateful, malevolent glow that is often described as a dark green in color. Some say that when Ezorakk'lagdan approaches, one can hear the loud scraping of his tail as it sweeps the hard ground and the deep rattle of his footsteps as he approaches.
Most all accounts can agree: the undead walking form of Ezorakk'lagdan that haunts the Mists is a terrible sight. Most witnesses can barely remember what they saw, and most are so shaken by the experience that they cannot speak for many days afterward.

Ack! You took one of my ideas!
I am actually glad there was going to be a Dragon, it seemed to be a need.

Hi Azhira, I'm waiting for that one to come alive as well, ah well, maybe not alive..

I think it should be 410b.S. to 180 b.S. ?
Are dragons not thought to be just a "myth" like in more southern fields? I thought there was an agreement about that. Could be different in the North, but still, it/he lived quite "recently" compared to the time the area is settled. --> Iceelves of Iol
Well, what I wanted to do is post an image - when reading your description the picture of the WoW intro Dragon (Undead) sprang into my mind.

I quite enjoy this entire idea, Azhira. And I also think those pictures are quite cool, Talia. I can't wait until this idea develops fully.

Thanks everyone.
Dragons are not as mythical in the North as they are in the South. The far north icy regions of the Sarvonia hold a fair number of frost and ice drakes.
Kalta'Goor
, for example, holds snow drakes and some ice dragons and can be seen by those daring to cross the icy seas and brave the extreme cold. Due to the relative few inhabitants and colonies of other races, the dragons were able to survive in these remote reaches.

And I'm pretty sure we already have illustrations for a Frost Dragon/Drake, at the very least. Didn't Faugar do a whole set of elemental dragons at one point?

Both the Icedragon and the Frostdragon have already entries. I posted the above pictures as an inspiration to describe an UNDEAD dragon, not a living one and not as an example for a picture, Judy. Apart from that, these beast on my pics are not frostdragons, but kind of undead griffins, used as riding beast. (as I learned yesterday, just to keep you informed

If I remember right, the scarceness of sentient dragons or dragons in general is not because they were hunted or persecuted in a way or the other, but due to the Year of Darkness where most of them died.
Well, I think an undead sentient dragon is cool, but I would date its lifetime a bit earlier. Maybe he died in the year of darkness? That would be a cool, would "interlink" the world.

Eh, your pics are certainly undead dragons, Talia (
Sindragosa
is the dragon you posted).
These
are undead riding griffons.

Well, but as we actually have something like this drawn, someone might as well be creative and find a way to integrate this picture up there

Woah, nice! And there are hills and mists AND ruins. Now mind you, those are dolmen-y things, not actual dwarven ruins, but I'm sure that could be easily explained.
In fact, I know what those are - the standing stones are alsetic energy points, and some of the earliest 'monuments' ever raised in Caelereth. There are a number of pictures and references to them on the site already, so when the Alsetic entry goes up (la la la, Judy, get duff in gear there) I'll do some crops from those pictures to show various areas of alsetism...
So who's gonna write up icky Ezakky? Er, I mean, the tremendous and terrifying Scourge of the North? Azhira, do you think you can alter your ice concept a bit towards making him a now-bone monster, to take in this cool illustration? I promise, I'll explain the stones...

Well, I am writing the entry and I definitely can use that bone dragon pic! An excellent find, Deci!
Give me a few more days to get some more written up.
