I'm doing my additions in yellow.

a) Categorisation
Herbarium/Medicinal Herbs/Healing Herbs/Yahrle

b) Basic Overview of the Plant
Yahrle is a common healing herb that is also referred to as "Meadow Hop", "Military Herb" or "Staunchweed". It is found mostly in sunny grassy areas throughout Caelereth and is used to treat wounds, dispel melancholy and can supposedly cure baldness and bring about a vision of a future mate.

c) Description
This is a common herb that stands two palmspans and three - eight nailsbreadths tall. The stem is angular and rough with spear shaped leaves alternating laterally around it. These leaves are one palmspan and one-seven nailsbreadths long and three nailsbreadths broad, clasping the stem at the base, the segments are very finely cut, giving the leaves a feathery appearance. The leaves and stem of the Yahrle give off a very pungent peppery smell. It flowers from late spring to early fall, with the blooms white or pale lilac. The petals being like minute blades, in flattened, loose heads. The whole plant is more or less hairy, with white, silky hairs pressed close to the stem and leaves.

d) Territory
The Yahrle can be found in various places throughout Caelereth, mostly in sunny grassy areas like the Aurora Fields or the Heath of Jernais in Santharia or the Wilshirer Heath and Celeste Lowlands in Northern Sarvonia. It will not grow in deserts such as the Ráhaz-Dáth desert or in excessively sandy areas.

e) Usages
This plant is used in the treatment of wounds, the dispelling of melancholy and is also reputed to be a cure for baldness.

Treatment of Wounds
Healers and herbalists throughout Santharia and amongst the human and elven tribes of north Sarvonia will more than likely know of and use Yahlre in the treatment of wounds. The Ice Tribes, including the Remusians, and the Ashmari are exceptions to this. In the case of the Ice Tribes, the Remusians and the other tribes, instead use varro for this purpose. When using Yahlre, the whole plant is harvested, dried and made into an ointment that is applied to a wound to stop any bleeding.

Dispelling of Melancholy
Melancholy has been defined by the Mindsmoothers as being a state of deep sadness and loneliness. Excessive amounts of time spent by oneself is another indicator of melancholy. It has been suggested by the White Nehtorian Healers, that Black Dog, a deep melancholy brought about by the scurfy disease, may be dispelled or reduced through the use of Yahlre. In any case, the flower can be dried and one or two petals boiled in one or more firkins of water. This tea is then drunk for dispelling melancholy. If this tea is too strong a person can become violently ill. Thaelcar, a Whitecoat from Voldar, capital of the Province of Valdynn in Santharia in southern Sarvonia has observed that if too much Yahlre is in the tea, the patient's melancholy increases and the patient has become violent and dangerous.

Cure for Baldness
Finally, Yahlre has the reputation of being a preventative of baldness. For this to work, the head of the patient needs to be washed in the Yahlre tea described previously. This cure cannot be confirmed.

f) Reproduction
There are two methods of reproduction for the Yahrle plant. The first of these is by its creeping roots. The Yahrle's roots spread out along the ground seeking good soil. It is believed that this is a key reason for the Yahrle being unable to grow in deserts or sandy regions.

The second method of reproduction is through seed dispersal by birds. These birds include the coa-coa bird, the garthook bird and the wynd racer bird.

g) Myth/Lore/Origins
It is said by the elves that this is one of the herbs dedicated to Coór, in earlier days, being sometimes known as Coór's Nettle or Coór's Shadowing, and was used for divination in spells. It has also been used in folk superstitions. They swear, a scup of ground Yahrle sewn up in fine cloth, placed under the pillow before going to bed, brings a vision of the future husband or wife. The words used depend on the area of Santharia in which the commoners live. Centoraurian peasants around the Aurora Fields are likely to say:

"Oh pretty herb of the meadow
reveal unto me while I sleep
my bosom friend I am to know
a life of joy on the morrow I reap"

While those elsewhere, such as Erphoronian maidens around the Heath of Jemais are more likely to say the following:

"The moon is high, and night winds blow.
In a piece of cloth I sew
This little flower
with the power
To show me what I wish to know.

The work is done! I gently trim
The edges as my light grows dim.
I cut the thread,
Place 'neath my head
Oh please let it be him!"

Here is the original entry ...
Common healing herb, also refered to as Meadow Hop, Military Herb or Staunchweed.

Appearance. This is a common herb that stands 2 palmspans and 3-8 nailsbreadths tall. The stem is angular and rough with spear shaped leaves alternating laterally around it. Usages. This Yahrle is used in the treatment of wounds or dispelling melancholy. The whole plant is harvested, dried and made into an ointment that is applied to a wound to stop any bleeding. The flower alone can be dried and one or two petals boiled in one or more liters of water. This tea is then drunk for dispelling melancholy. If this tea is too strong a person can become violently ill. It has the reputation also of being a preventative of baldness, if the head were washed with it, although this cannot be confirmed.

Myth/Lore. It is said ny the elves that this is one of the herbs dedicated to Coór, in earlier days, being sometimes known as Coór's Nettle or Coór's Shadowing, and was used for divination in spells. It has also been used in folk superstitions. They swear, if ten grams of ground Yahrle sewn up in fine cloth, placed under the pillow before going to bed, having repeated the following words, brings a vision of the future husband or wife:

"Oh pretty herb of the meadow

my bosom friend I am to know
a life of joy on the morrow I reap"

What happened to the original description, overview, and usages?  When doing a rewrite, you need to respect as much as possible the original author's intent and direction.  In this case, there are no errors to repair or bring into line with the new standards of the site; you are merely expanding upon and fleshing out details that may not have been available or weren't included in the original entry.

I'll keep my eye on this one, as I remember giving it its alternate name of 'Staunchweed', and l'd like to see what you have in mind for it.   Enjoy!

Thanks for clarifying that Judith.

I had the existing entry saved as a word document on my computer and just forgot to copy them across into here. I then got distracted, saved my work in here without checking the other stuff was there, and ...

Anyway, I'll fix those things up right away. :)

I thought I had actually put that stuff in it, but apparently not.

Just one little thing. Litres isn't a Santharian measure. Neither is grams. Perhaps 1-3 firkins, and a scup? Also, can the petals be dried like tea leaves, or will they loose their potency?

Litres was written in the original entry, as were grams. I was aware they are not measures used in Santharia. I understood from what Bard Judith said I wasn't meant to be touching that stuff, just adding to it. The following was what Judith said ...

Please be patient with me ... RL and work are both eating up a lot my time at the moment, and yes, that started happening on about 3 May, without warning.

Sorry to be a cause of confusion: I did not proofread the original entry, merely scanned it to make sure there were no obvious omissions or sections missing, as in Dek's first post.    Of course if there are factual errors, or things you think are errors, make a note and check with the experts in the area - you'll probably be given free rein to fix them.

Well ... after a break of perhaps far too long, I'm back to have a go at getting this one completed :D

I put the original entry in its entirity at the bottom of the first post in this thread. Above this, I have the version which I am adjusting.

I'm really not too sure about plants in general (they have a bad habbit in real life of dying when I go anywhere near them). :(

With a sudden 'Poof!' a peculiar and strangely familiar little elf in pale gray robes appears. She glances at the flower, pulls out a parchment, writes a poem, folds it into bird, and tosses it in the air. Then, with another 'Poof!' the peculiar little elf disappear again, leaving stardust in her wake.

The moon is high, and night winds blow.
In a piece of cloth I sew
This little flower
with the power
To show me what I wish to know.

The work is done! I gently trim
The edges as my light grows dim.
I cut the thread,
Place 'neath my head
Oh please let it be him!

Thank you so much for that lovely poem, Rayne. Here's an aura for you.

I've integrated it into the entry now.

Just a random idea - what type of "violently ill" are we talking about here?  Sickness or some sort of hyperactive happiness?  Also, how would one diagnose a patient with melancholy?

I really have no idea ... my understanding of anything to do with medicine is even less than my understanding of anything to do with plants, and considering I have recently killed 80 plants at home here ... that tells you my level of ability with regards to being able to explain how one diagnoses melancholy aka absolutely non-existant.

Yeah, it's about time to get this one done!  cool A few things:

- Make sure to write alternate names also between apostrophes if mentioned for the first time, in this case that's the Overview.

- As for the "violently ill" part I thought maybe it just results in some fever, headaches and stuff, and if someone who suffers under melancholy drinks it and gets fever and headaches the melancholy is likely to increase. So all in all it would be counterproductive to the desired effect, and therefore needs to be taken with care. Maybe work that in, at least that's some common sense I could think of ;)

And basically I guess that should be it for an update of this entry. I guess it just lacked a bit of refinement, a proper Overview and the Reproduction section, and now we have Rayne's poems as well, so I'd say we could put up the revised version soon then if there are no major objections and ideas on what to add!

I've highlighted that entire usages part of it, as I did some looking around the site and was able to get a few more cross references in, including to a disease which has melancholy in it, to the Remusians who use varro instead of yahrle, as well as to the mindsoothers, whitecoats, Voldar and Valdynn.

Anyway, let's see how that goes.

*haha* I saw that this unsually named disease "Black Dog" was indeed actually already referred to in the Scurfy Disease entry :) Funny name. But anyway, I see you've further touched up the whole thing, and it looks good to me - so I'll mark this one for integration then I'd say  thumbup

And you also get an aura +1 for finally concluding what was started in May - always good to see something being finally completed!  thumbup

Thanks Art ... I'm pleased to finally have my 'mandatory' visit to the Herbarium out of my hair. I'm going to leave the Herbarium to those with green thumbs, rather than me with my brown thumbs.  grin thumbup

In any case, I saw a small spelling mistake in the Overview section.

I wrote "It is found mostly in sunny grassy ares throughout Caelereth and is used to treat wounds, dispel melancholy and can supposedly cure baldness and bring about a vision of a future mate."
that 'ares' should be 'areas'. Should I alter the actual entry to fix that, report it as an error or can you take it up from here?
