M'ruk if it's not too much trouble, would you mind sourcing the words? Linking to the post/entry or whatever they came from?

I for one don't recognize quite a few words in there, and they all seem to have the hallmarks of one creator. It would make it easier for discussion if, should someone want to see if there was an explanation for the word, given when it was posted in the vocabulary thread, or if it is already integrated.

Just in case you don't understand the whole link set up: (And this is using curly brackets {} in place of square [] ones)

{url=your link here}Text here{/url}
So, the url, the actual link, fits between the brackets, while the text that goes in between the two tags becomes the Link in all it's beige glory.

So in your case, the word Link would be replaced with the word in question, and the url tags would have the post or entry where it was mentioned.

You want to make sure you've got the right link. If you're linking from an entry on the site, right click the link in the side bar and click "copy link location" or the link at the top of the entry that leads to the section with the word in it which you can do the same way.

Don't copy and paste the link from the address bar at the top if you can see the scroll to the left, because you'll always get http://www.santharia.com/startup_new/mainframe.htm which is a link to the home page. It seems that the board does this automatically for urls like the one I've placed here, but it takes up space and look ugly.

If you don't want to copy the link location, you can right click and hit "open in new tab" (I'm not familiar with the myriad of browsers people use, but it is my understanding that most browsers will allow you to do this) and this will give you the correct link in the address bar.

If it's a post, what you can do is right click the subject line of a post, hit "copy link location" and then paste it into the right spot in your tags and it will always bring someone back to the same post in a thread. Handy if you don't want to force people to read through 7 or eight pages to find one post.

If at all possible. Some of them might not have a source perhaps? No one said this was going to be easy work after all. buck

I give M'ruk at any rate an aura +1 for collating this list, so that we can finally prepare it for the site!  thumbup

On the other hand I'm not so sure if it helps that much to link every single word - the sources must be in the Orcish Vocabulary thread anyway, or? Maybe there should be some debate on this word and that word, as some might not really fit or were made by people who had little understanding of the whole concept, but I guess it would suffice to just try to filter those out that are problematic, and get a final list out of it.

Thanks Artimdor! I'm on page 7 of 8, so hopefully I'm nearly finished.

I'm not really sure Valan. I mean, there are only a few pages of the vocab thread, so it can't be that difficult. If you really insist, I suppose I could do it, but I think it's not really worth it at the moment.

Valan the problem with linking to the sources (besides taking an inordinant amount of time) will be that each word has many sources.  I did a simple search for a couple of words and came up with multiple sources.  I would recommend just simply searching on the words that are unfamiliar instead of trying to link each and every one.

Make= Ssal, Ssalo
-Weapon= Arg'Ssal (lit. Wound maker)
-Challenge= Khq'Ssalo (Lit. fight maker)
-Challenger= Khq'Ssalo (Lit. fight maker)
-Light= Ligt'Ssalo (lit. Shadow maker)
Medicine= Puush
Most of what sounds wrong here derives from the suggested word for make. It seems as though it should be a sibilant noise, a sort of hissing which I can't fathom an orc making. A drawn out sound like that (also the double U in medicine) seems at odds with the harsh, sudden quality much of the rest of the language.

Process= Waid

Process? What on earth do you mean here? To process? Wiktionary tells me that the verb form of process (which now no longer resembles a word itself)  means "To perform a particular process." or "To treat with a substance" As a noun the only definition that makes sense is "A set of procedures used to produce a product, most commonly in the food and chemical industries." It's also a particularly un-orcen sounding word.

To enter (as in a contest or conversation)= In
Why would orcs need a word for this? What is the genesis for the word? It sounds a lot like making words for the sake of making words, which isn't the kind of thinking the would have generated orcish.

High= Ha'akh
Noble, High, Worthy = Ashz (Ashz'oc = tribe)

Volk= space, dwelling
Residence= Darg'iv (lit. place of living)
These two both seem to conflict. In the first, because there is nothing to modify Ha'akh to be with regards to physical height (we're really high up) meaning as opposed to High (as in High King or High Elven) in a metaphorical sense. In the second, they're seemingly synonyms which we don't really run into anywhere else in the language. To make it more compelling, Volkek-Oshra is the name of the ximaxian orcs. So it seems to make more sense by virtue of already being attached to something on the site.
To break it down Volkek, Volk'ek, Volk'Oc or "Settled Orcs". While it doesn't mean much, Oshra sounds a lot like "Osther" as in the Oshther-Oc tribe.

Longsword= Ha'akh Ha'k
Length is a thing very easily denoted through gestures, and orcs don't seem the sort to make distinctions between different kinds of sword.

Ha'akh= Long
As above, but also, why the apostrophe there? That implies that it's two separate words, but I doubt you could break them up further.

Huge= Hef
Hulking= Hef
Imposing= Hef

Violence= Dak
Sudden= Dak
It seems that the first three definitions could be two words since the one is a comparative (see above on length and gestures), the latter are for all intents and purposes synonyms, while in the second they are seemingly unrelated terms.

To stink= Sif with frown
I thought we were going to avoid things like this? Link

Death= Morta, Lak
Why two words for one thing?
This is the sort of thing we're trying to avoid I think. Why would orcs want more than one word for something?

Warrior = Uckzuck
This should be two separate words. Unlike darg'iv and volk it makes sense to have these two words. Uck is likely used more often in the formation of new words, since it's easier than Zuck.

Worthy Warriors = Ashzuck
This should be broken up somewhere with an apostrophe, likely just after the Z.

You're also missing a few words from the vocab thread. That all said, can we put off integrating this until the discussion on orcish basics is completed?

What about entering a battle?

Imposing= Hef

Violence= Dak
Sudden= Dak
It seems that the first three definitions could be two words since the one is a comparative (see above on length and gestures), the latter are for all intents and purposes synonyms, while in the second they are seemingly unrelated terms.

There can be synonyms in Kh'omchr'om, and some words can mean more than one thing

To stink= Sif with frown
I thought we were going to avoid things like this? Link

Ok, I'll delete that to avoid complications

Death= Morta, Lak
Why two words for one thing?
This is the sort of thing we're trying to avoid I think. Why would orcs want more than one word for something?

Ok, I'll remove Lak

Warrior = Uckzuck

Ok

Worthy Warriors = Ashzuck

Ok

You're also missing a few words from the vocab thread. That all said, can we put off integrating this until the discussion on orcish basics is completed?

1) I went through every single post and put in all the realistic words, so I don't think I've missed any.

2) I think vocab can be put up without grammar.

Thanks for the suggestions, Valan. I think it's all been corrected now.

@Valan,

Violence and suddenness, while not synonyms, are fairly similar in meaning, especially in a warrior society like that of the Orcs. No-one could put violence and slowness in the same basket, there is often some suddenness (although maybe ambush and sudden are even better synnonyms? Just an idea).

Also:
Here,here, and here (and read on)

As I recall, there was a big discussion about this around the 5th page of the New Vocab Here thread.

Oh, and M'ruk, Cha means Woman and Cursed/Enchanted, an interesting insight into Orcen culture, no?

M'ruk, you collected all these words from different threads and entries? That's impressive work indeed! Aura from me, too.

I know nothing about Orcish, but it seems to me that there could be different words for "sudden violence" and "slow violence".

Sudden violence would refer to fighting, beating, surprise attacks, etc.

Slow violence could refer to cruelty (e.g. torture) and maybe also to premeditated acts of violence; alternatively or in addition, slow violence could mean actions whose effects are gradual or take some time (e.g. poisoning). But I don't know whether orcs would need such a distinction?

Anyway, I believe there is a similar (but not identical) distinction in the some terran languages' metaphors of violence, although it's expressed not in terms of speed, but in terms of temperature (think of 'hot-headed' brawlers vs. murder 'in cold blood', for example).

Not to jump on the bandwagon, but definitely a bardic aura point for you as well, M'ruk.  Collation is an arduous task of research which requires even more dedication and affection for the Dream than sheer invention, and often becomes a thankless one as well.

 In this case, you need not worry about defending any of your words as you have not been the originator;  your efforts have made it possible for those who care about consistency and the orcen language to spot discrepancies, duplications, omissions, and the like far more easily.

One note on my part:  no orcen sibilance?  I beg your pardon, my good fellows, but have you TRIED speaking with two tusks protruding from your mouths?  Attempt to simulate even Tharian with a couple of chunks of wood, or overbaked cookie fragments, or the like, held firmly between your jaws and keeping your lips permanently apart, and see if you aren't as sibilant as sleepy snakes!

Mind you, it needn't be overdone, but avoiding 's' sounds altogether would be unreasonable.  How about such melifluously orcen sounds as:

T'st
Gnosh
S'btt
Gr'as
Shi'bor
Xas
S'aak
Ptuus
Hq'su
Ghu's'ghi
Kus
Wrosz
...

just as a start....

Thanks for the auras, everyone, and also for the suggestions. I'll be sure to add quite a few of those words, Master bard, and I'll put up some variations on the word 'violence', Shab. And I am grateful that you follow other threads, Athviaro, because your input has helped many entries around the site, I think.

Again, I just want to reiterate that I think comments are very important, and I think taking them into account is part of the 'job description' of creating entries and being an active member of this community, so I am very happy for you to comment. :)

Thanks M'ruk

Just a question for anyone who thinks they know *begins to lay a trail of cookies for Tharoc*, and it's this: What does Ch'ron-P'thok mean, exactly? Because I was thinking a simpler work would be M'oc - not orc. I knoow it doesn't belong here, I'll make a post in the other thread as well.

*Examines large pit covered in branches, covered in cookies, and the trail through the deserted forest* There, the combination of cookies and a chance to show off his knowledge should lure that big green Tharoc here like flies to honey.

Oo, are you still here? *Flees*
