Greetings,

Arti has suggested that I should come up with an elven name for 'Waters of Division' for my Eight Winds Bay entry.

I've looked in the Tharian-Styrash dictionary, and was unable to find a word for 'division'

However I did find one for break and breaking as well as one for water.

break (verb) ecúan

breaking (noun) (f) ecuá

water (noun) (f) már

land (noun) (m) cál

so, would

Már'ecuá'cál work? (lit. Water breaking land)

or just Már'ecuá (lit. Water breaking)

I'm thinking of breaking being similar to division, as in both we are breaking a whole into two or more parts. :)

Your best bet is to have Arti develop a new Styrash phrase for what you are trying to convey. Water breaking doesn't seem to sound quite right. He created new ones for my Empress Kash entry.

You just have to ask nicely and bring lots of cookies.  ;)

No, I would not want to live in a world without dragons, as I would not want to live in a world without magic, for that is a world without mystery, and that is a world without faith. And that, I fear, for any reasoning, conscious being, would be the cruelest trick of all.

Yeah, thinking about it, there's a difference between "break" and "divide", and also "split" (sheltán) isn't exactly "divide", especially when you look into the other meanings of sheltán, like "rip" and "tear".

So I guess it's best to create an entirely new word. I suggest the word sysán for "to divide", "sýs" meaning "2", so the action word to create two would be "sysán" then.

Waters would be maría, for the noun "division" I suggest syéth (m.)

Combined "Waters of Division" would be syéth'maría.

Thanks for that.

Now then ... next question ...

I am looking for a name that the Blessed Sea Elves would call the reeds at the mouth of the Libern river that catch the salt and which the elves later on harvest and use in their cooking and for trade with the other races. Looking in the relevant dictionary, I can find words for

salt water - noun (m) ón

saltiness - noun (m) puenér

salty - adj púe'én

would pué - noun (m) be a suitable word for salt?

then for reed ... can't find one for reed ... any suggestions?

The words you found are not the best examples of Styrásh, but they are not totally wrong either. And as they already exist, we should roll with it, I'd say.

As for making up new words: The principles laid down in the Styrásh Principles page of course should be applied if you make e.g. new nouns as far as endings are concerned. This is not the case with "pué" for "salt". I recommend to use the word "puér" (m.) instead.

As for "reed":

We have a word for "grass", which is "echár", and I'd like to construct the word as "wood-grass". We have a word for "woods" (I'd like to change that to wood/forest), which is "lón", but no word for "wood" (as in a "piece of wood"), so I construct that with a female ending as a minor form of "wood/forest",  "lonuá" (f.).

"Reed" I'd then say would be "echalonuá" (f.), quite a beautifully sounding word methinks :)

Thank you Art.

So, would I be correct in assuming the thing together would be "puér'echalonuá" (Styrash lit. Salt Wood-Grass)?

Or would I need to change either the word for salt to feminine form or the word for wood-grass to masculine form?

"Puér'echalonuá" (f.) is just fine I'd say. Take that one. No need to change anything there :)

Should I be putting these Styrash words for
Waters of Division
The maelstrom
Those reeds
The islands
That bird i've created
into the Language Additions thread on the left side of the screen?

I'm amazed you can see the Altario projects pile considering it is dwarfed by my unfinished projects. For which I apologise.
