The legs of the cock appear to be it's forelegs, with a body shaped a bit catlike, sitting on the hind legs.

Well, maybe so ...

But what wonderfully mischievous faces these taenish have! And that chick - so cute. Although actually, I think it's laughing at us, and won't hesitate to bite off your finger if you make the mistake of going by appearances. It's even winking, isn't it?

I always thought it was a shame the taenish didn't have an illustration. I didn't imagine the feathers to be so thin, almost hair-like, but I notice the entry isn't very specific about this aspect. You're not by any chance planning an update of the taenish entry, Judith? Anyway, aura for duochromatic pastorality!

I'm not a good critic of visual art, but I wonder whether the shadow of the cock's leg & claws should be sharper?

I like the feather colours, and I think the background is fine as it is.

Wonderful pic, Bard. :)

Like Mira, the cock looks like the legs are forelegs.  But, as the hen and chick don't really show the legs, you could change the description slightly in your update so the taenish are even more exotic and do pull themselves about on front located legs with no real back legs.

Love the colours, and agree with Shabby that the background is perfectly fine as is.

So the Taenish bird entry will have "before and after" pictures, eh?  lol

(grins) Yeah, I noticed that too, Az...

And thank you all for the perspective on the legs; they do look pretty far forward.  I think in the process of trying to create a plumy tail the proportions of my original body altered and I didn't pay attention.  I'll keep them standard birds with two legs in the right place and just fix the picture.

I think since this is the basic 'chicken' of Santharia, with one in every pot as t'were, I want to make it as useful as possible.  Hence the extremely fuzzy, fine feathers, which will make wonderful pillows and feather ticks (and which can be used in amanters' art, millinery, and the like, because of their nice colouration...)  The spurs can be mounted in the end of simple wooden handles and used as household tools (for pricking out patterns, punching holes in thin leather, scoring card, etc.)   And of course the breeding for brighter colour.  I might also add in that the eggs come in various shades ranging from the most common white/off-white through soft mottled purples and blues such as allia and cerubell...

Yes, Shab, they do have distinct personalities, mostly mischievous; that concept definitely evolved as I was drawing them!   I'll make sure the clutch I'm saving for you are all hand-trained before I present them, though....

This is a really great pictures.  My favorite parts are 1) the Taenish laying on the ground.  The feathers on that one are done so well it is very striking.  2) I love the hay/straw it looks very realistic great. 3)  the wood looks very realistic too, just about perfect.  Better than I can achieve.

Well done.  I love that the Taenish is not a chicken.  It is a Taenish.

Better I don't show Helen-Elise this chick, otherwise she may get the idea, that holding them in our garden (or less nice looking ones) would be a good idea! She loves hens anyway (next to cats and mice).

Seeker:  I'll tell you a little secret for those feathers...and the straw!
It's called 'optipustics' and it's a fabulous random brush technique pioneered by 'Project Dogwaffle'.

http://www.thebest3d.com/dogwaffle/

You can get the free version, PD 1.2, on this page http://www.thebest3d.com/dogwaffle/free/index.html

and while it's limited in many other areas, clicking the 'optipustics' enable button and playing with the different presets
will give you beautiful fir branches, pine garlands, grass, feathers, and the like.  You can then fiddle with the sliders to
figure out different custom 'brushes' that will create different lengths, angles, and randomness.  I often use this to create specific textures over a project which I
started in Adobe Photoshop, such as the Council Tree or these Taenish, and it's great fun for backgrounds with grass and lichens as well.

Try it out - it's fun to play with and you just might want to add a new arrow to your quiver!  I am envious of your mastery of proportion and light, so please
give ME some hints there in return.

 XO,
Judith

Aura +1 given, very enjoyable picture I have to say, Judy!  thumbup

What problem I wanted to mentioned as well ("foreleg") were mentioned already, so nothing new to report from here. Just address these and it will be perfect!

I like Shab's comment that the chicken is laughing at us - lol it really looks that way. And that they seem to represent other personalities, well done at that, it comes across nicely! Also if you'd like to update the taenish entry, this would be very helpful - this way we can flesh out our version of a Santharian ground bird according to the picture. And that this one is somewhat different from Earthen birds is even better, it's the Santharian version, and if we emphasize the differences in image and entry, the better!  thumbup

I see you have your priorities in order :D.   I have to get dressed, wash my breakfast plate, put on eyeliner, and head off to school (after a long ten-day thanksgiving vacation), so there are mine for today!

I played around with dogwaffler last night.  Wow you can do some neat things with this programme.  Now I just have to figure out how to pull what I can create from dogwaffler into my GIMP pictures.

Ah, you're a GIMPist?  I shall have to go look that one up again.

Yes, transferring between these different programs is often not that smooth: I find saving as a BMP is the only option for Dogwaffle (because what good are TARGAs?) and then opening it again in Photoshop to do further work with the brushes and features I'm used to, is often the best solution.

Aren't optipustics fun though?

Ah yes, forgot to point out to Shabakuk that Chapter 5 is ready for testing - will do so now!

I am pleased it is going well for you though Seeker ... can't wait to try it and die. :D

Dek-   shoals is going very well.  Art is starting on chapter 6. A very important chapter.  Did you test chapter 5?

I'm amazed you can see the Altario projects pile considering it is dwarfed by my unfinished projects. For which I apologise.
