The Carabery Tree

Categorization:

Tree, endemic

overview:

The graves of the dead, majestic and great, in the Ronoth Forest it grows. The legend tells that the trees grow from the cursed ground by the wish of the death. Keeping their history, making them graves and giving them peace, this is the service of this tree.

Description:

The Carabery tree is a endemic tree which grows in the wet swamp ground of Ronoth. The legend about Ronoth tells that Ronoth is the "Birth place" of the Carabery tree. It is a tree created by magic, the Belvali created the Carabery tree to make themselves graves. It is also called the "Shadow plant", because of it's habit to grow without sunlight. Indeed the tree cannot tolerate the sunlight. It has many big leaves which are protecting it from sunlight. The tree is very high it can reach great heights. The roots of the tree is very sensible on temperature, even a small change will make the oil in the roots getting hot which will cause the canals in the roots will become smaller and the tree will get a small amount of water. Its trunk is very huge, and its roots are partly in the water. The tree needs much water and shadow. The trunk color is a very dark green, it is very smooth and straight. Unlike the trunk the leaves are very colorful, they can get colors from light green to orange, this is because the sun is shining on them. Ronotheyan Dragons make their nests in the holes of the trunk or under the upper part of the roots. Carabery means "Shadow Giant", this word comes from a lost dialect which the residents of the forest early have used. The Ronotheyan dock, Cabaneri Iniari was built by this tree material. This is the reason for the dock's name which means "Shadowstar dock".

During the night the Carabery tree creates a "Stone skin" around it self, by releasing special oil which is hard when it's cold, and liquid when it's warm. This skin shall protect the Carabery tree from cold weather. The tree is very sensible, if the tree gets cold then the roots will freeze from inn. Because of this oil, the tree is a perfect nest, during the cold night it creates a warming skin. The Oil is transparent, which means it has no color, it is very sticky. To harvest it, people use bottles, it can happen that people get stuck in the oil while harvesting. It is said that the Carabery oil is used in the medicine to create salves to heal deeper wounds, because living creatures are warm the oil will create a sticky liquid skin in the wound which prevents bleeding.

Ronotheyan have used this oil to create homes which are warm and stable. If a peace of the Carabery tree dies, after a time it starts to petrify, at least it becomes a stone. The Cabaneri Iniari dock was built with this standard, first they constructed a easy wood construction, and after a month it petrified to a stone building. The tree part needs about 12 days to petrify no matter how large it is...

The Ronotheyan used the petrified parts to make Staffs of them, combined with a Ronotheyan Orb it is a powerful wizardry tool.

Territory:

The Carabery tree is endemic, so it grows only on the Forest of Ronoth. It is everywhere in this territory, there is no point on which the tree  lets the sunlight come in.

Usage

The tree was only used for construction as the main material of the Ronotheyan. By it's special ability that it petrifies after it's removed from it's roots, it is the perfect material, for stable buildings. Today the tree isn't much of usage, just the oil that the tree produces is a perfect warming box during the night. Also people used the oil to create salves.
Staffs made from this tree are legendary, every Ronotheyan mage had one.

Reproduction

The Carabery tree has a very specific kind of reproduction. If a Carabery tree reaches the maximal height, it starts to expand it's roots, after a time the roots come to the surface and create a new tree. All trees are connected with their roots.

Myth/Origin

The Carabery trees were summoned by the souls of the dead in Ronoth. They grow up and created a paradise for the undead. The first tree was the tree on which the Order of Ran'Sola was written, the tree expanded it's  roots and created the whole Forest of Ronoth.

Hello, Perab!

I see you are very productive, and I love how you are cross-referencing your ideas here, but I do have a word of caution. It's easy to get carried away
and make everything fit together in your own little area while ignoring the much larger existing world of Caelereth in which you wish to set your work.
Please see my comments on The Ralleb!  http://www.santharia.com/dev/index.php/topic,14648.msg185795/topicseen.html#new

I think this is one of the best suggestions, and would follow naturally from developing the Grove entry, so I would suggest to focus on this tree next.  I love your ideas about the oil - quite unique - but think you should extend the range of this tree somewhat.  Again, see my extensive comments on the Ralleb.

Regards from the Bard,

Mira isn't talking to those people though ... he's talking to someone who does have a computer and an internet connection, who can therefore access Google.

A colt is a young MALE horse.  A filly is a young FEMALE horse.

Well Perab you certainly have a bunch of entries going for someone who has not even completed one yet.  So in my opinion your best choice would be to concentrate on this tree. because I think trees do not need to be too complicated and I think it will be a good entry for you to learn a few things on.  By reading the entry I can tell you will need some help with the English phrasing, that is OK not everyone here in Santharia has perfect English. So as long as you are willing to accept some help there we should probably be able to get through this.

Certainly this entry needs some more details.  I like the oil and the hard protection and the fact it petrifies after it dies.  GREAT IDEA!  here are a few questions?

Need to explain why this tree does not grow anywhere else?  Is there a reason why you want it so confined?  Perhaps you can say it mainly grows in the Ronoth swamp and can be found in few other places.

How long does it take for the tree to petrify after it dies.  Does the carpenter need to rush to build the building before it gets to hard to work with for example. Is it brittle when it petrifies?  If not then I can imagine the people may make wonderful quarterstaffs from this wood that harden and become deadly.  Would make for another interesting weapon for example.  In fact there are probably lots of uses fro a wood that petrifies.

Please do not say that this is one of the highest trees in Caelereth.  We already have too many tree entries that want to claim that title.  Perhaps it is one of the highest trees in the swamp or something.

You say it cannot stand sunlight.  Are you referring to the trunk of the tree?  Because if this is a tall tree I imagine at least the top of the tree will be getting lots of sunlight.  What happens if it does get sunlight?

What color is the trunk?  What kind if leaves are on this tree?  What color are the leaves?  Does the skin change color when it gets hard?  What is the oil from the tree like?  What color is it?  How do people harvest the oil?

So hopefully that is helpful to start with.  thumbup

M'yeah, closed ecosystems, the bane of every fresh developer (myself not excluded, i might add, although i like to think i've later seen the rror of my ways there)

Perab, a big portion of the problems with your entries comes from the fact that you're creating one of aforementioned 'closed ecosystems', a region with as little interaction with its surroundings as possible, with no historical, geographical, ecological or demographical ties to anything we've already established.
While the basic work may have merit, we do require every new addition to be fully connected with what we already have.

In the end, that is probably going to take several changes in your basic concepts. This is also the reason we encourage new contributors to start with entries on plants, beasts, or miscelaneous objects, and to pick something -unrelated- to their own ideas.

To use myselkf as an example, back in the day i wrote about a tiny bird, a magic spell, and a type of reed before even submitting my concept of an own section of the map to the senior developers.

I think that making a few of such random contributions helps you get a feel for the established world as it is, as well as forcing you to read up on just about everything, and practice interweaving new ideas with the old ones.

I don't know if these have been pointed out to you Perab, but in light of what Mira says about doing something unrelated to "your" image first, may I direct you to a few resources within the Herbarium: this (plant entries needing to be done) and this (plant entries needing revision/expansion). This lets you write something already extant in the world and so learn about integrating properly when writing a plant entry, which will help you here; but also try writing about almost anything in the proposed lists that you want (ask first!) to get the feel of development with a framework in place. It'll also help your research skills and ability to find all the relevant material on site.

But I will try to repeat that, you want to advice me to finish unfinished works started by other members?
