I have absolutely no idea where to put this. So I thought of Seeker and Valan evil.

Firstly, how advanced is Santharian mathematics? They have numbers; do they use a decimal system, in the same way as we do? Have they created the concept of "nought", as more than a placeholder? Fractions? The idea that multiplication and division are inverse? Negative numbers? Dividing and multiplying by negative numbers? Dividing by a fraction? Powers and roots? The fact that they are the same thing? Negative powers? The concept of infinity? Precepts of algebra? Calculus? Integral calculus? Pi, as the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter? Trigonometry? Pythagoras' Theorem? "E"? Is it concentrated on practical geometry?

That opened up, how about law? Is it primitive? Summary? Capital punishment? Corporal punishment? Trial by judge? Trial by ordeal? Trial by jury? Professional advocates (in the cities?)? You see at what I am driving. I just want to stimulate discussion on these things.

Thanks for reading my rant.

The first three on your list, zero, fractions and their computation, multiplication and division as inverses, will likely be known to gnomes.

The law would best be addressed to Artimidor.

The question might be - do all laws of maths apply in Caelereth? Physical laws do only apply as far as it is convenient for us... gravity works differently...  grin

I think, Talia, for the sake of simplicity and reason, numbers are still numbers and work the same way. Changing the way things work for the sake of changing them is verging on silliness.

I think maths has to work the same way. It's not possible for it to work any other way, because it all comes down to fundamental principles.

Oh, and I wonder if you saw the last few items as well Valan: Pi, trig. and Pythagoras? Pi and Pythag. seem gnomic to me.

Pythagorean theorem, and the basics of Pi (3.14 and a few other digits) for certain, trig and calculus seem a little far ahead.

To some extent we have to 'backstory' mathematics.  For example, since we must presuppose lenses and the science of grinding them to create eyeglasses and telescopes, we must have the math and physics to support that.  If we can make clocks and gears that work, we must have a concept of pi.  (Of course, the hobbits invented pi.  Or do I mean pie?)   And so on and so forth.  Work from preexisting technology to derive the laws!

I never said that, Valan. Please don't presume (?) things I did not say!
As I'm not fit enough in maths, I can't say, if it would be necessary to bend something as we had to do it in physics. So that was just a not seriously meant warning.

Are Shabby and Dek the same person in my mind.  Strange.

Ah yes, forgot to point out to Shabakuk that Chapter 5 is ready for testing - will do so now!

I am pleased it is going well for you though Seeker ... can't wait to try it and die. :D
18 May 2012, 09:35:13
No, I didn't Seeker. :( I think it is Master Anfang who is doing the testing
18 May 2012, 08:30:42
Dek-   shoals is going very well.  Art is starting on chapter 6. A very important chapter.  Did you test chapter 5?
