All right, here goes! The bombox palm, just written!

The Bombox Palm

The U'ufápherán, usually refered to as the Bombox palm, can be found everywhere in the swampy jungles and on the seacoasts of tropical regions. It’s leaves, trunk scales, and it’s remarkable fruit are used commonly among the people of tropics.

Appearance

The Bombox palm is relatively tall, up to six peds, and has a thin light-brown trunk, made up of small sharp triangular scales pointed upward. The leaves, flowers, and fruit grow in the upper part of the palm. Leaves sprout from the top and unfold in a similar way to brake leaves. The oldest leaves grow in the bottom of the crone and as they fall, the upper ones move down, and so on. The size of a grown leaf usually varies from 1-2 peds in length and 0.5 of a ped in width. The leaves are sleek and are dark green on the upper side and slightly lighter on the lower. Their tough surface and flesh make them very valuable in various usages.

The flowers are white and hard to notice, for they are very small and appear in the foundations of leaves, but the fruit is the most interesting part of the palm, and the reason for its’ name. The fruit, slightly bigger than a coconut, has a round form and a very smooth black surface. It starts off as greenish-pink and, as it grows, becomes red, purple and then black. The fruit in its’ early stage of development has a light-green pulp inside; all right to eat if one is starved, but in a grown fruit the pulp dries on the sides, emptying the interior, and leaving the seeds free inside, without the support of the pulp . The seed is released when the tight surface of the fruit cracks, sending it around in a several ped radius, accompanied by a loud explosion.

Territory

Bombox tree is very common on the coasts of Central and Southern Sarvonia, Northern Nybelmar, Yamalquain archipelago, and also, on the various isles of the tropical belt.

Usage

The coastal tribes have found many uses for this remarkable tree. For example, the leaves are used for roof covering, elements of clothing, when cut in strands - weaving baskets, sandals and such, and making various fans and cone-like hats, which are very important in hot climate. The sharp trunk scales are sometimes used as tools for piercing or cutting food and cloth. Also, some tribes are known for using the fruit of this palm in wars, in order to scare the opponent with noise, since grown bomboxes can also blow up when they are thrown or shaken.

Myth/Lore

It is said among the coastal tribes of central Sarvonia, that once on a little island the God Grothar in his fury of a storm had shaken a coconut palm forest with thunder so great that all the coconuts suddenly began to burst. The pieces of coconut flesh flew far, far away in different directions and settled in the regions where the Bombox grows now. From these pieces of flesh later on grew trees with a vivid memory of a growling thunder, and their fruit ever since then is imitating thunder and calling to their past days on the lively little island.

Quite interesting. Very detailed. *looks back over it* Nothing that I can see should be a problem, so await others' okaying it. Hmm. Who's Mod in herbarium? *checks* I guess you wait until either Bard Judith might come in, or Uragel does, or Artimidor checks in and okays it. I'd criticise, but can't think of anything. Just a note: coconut milk can ferment when out in the sun too much. Perhaps this might be included?

It does? Well, I don't really know where I'd say it, since it's not really about coconuts. But I've encountered another problem... see, I recently discovered that climate works quite differently from the one on earth, so on the southern pole there's no ice, but a desert. So I got worried about me telling of the terrietories - I simply put there the lands that'd usually be tropical on Earth. So please, do you have any suggestions on that? Whom do I ask about the climates and all that?

to speak with Arti: More detailed!
The fermented coconut should be part of it! what else can be cooked from it, how can it be used further? Can it be dried and an item for sale? is it used in cakes or in more spicy meals?

to the territory, this tropical belt is to vague, I don't even know where it could be. Please ask others what to write, name places and people, not only "tribes"

For the southern Sarvonian continent i can tell you the places:

A few might grow in Strata (because of their fruits), though the water is there restricted and they don't like brakish water. But they could grow on the west coast near Thalamabath where it will be a bit wetter and you can mention an entry from me still to come: Parts of the cloud forest near Varcopas and Varcopas itself should be warm enough and have enough water.
And the bards town Bardavos has a warm climate and water available all year.

Had another look at it: Why costal?does that mean it tolerates salty water?
And how could the elven(?) name be translated?

Ooo, a tough critic! Well, definitely justful. When I was writing this though I was looking at some other discription for reference, as not to miss anything, I guess I missed! :

But I'll fix it al right. Thank you very much for reading so closely, I really appreciate! Again, the thing is not a coconut, and it can't be cooked or used for anything foody; that I've described... originally. Or do you think it OUGHT to have all these other qualities?
(Ah! give the poor plant a break! It ca't be perfect, you know!, lol)
As for places and people, you're right. But was jsut realy lazy to try and find out who exactly lives there, where these things might grow.

About the coast, palms usually grow on the coasts because of the climate there, and all the special environment that the ocean provides, they jsut like it that way. (at least on Earth) So I made this palm in a traditional palm way.
Elven name... the last part, pheran, means tree, and the first I just made up, but maybe it doesn't need an elvish name. I think it won't. So I'll fix what there is.
Thanks for your advice.

I didn't read closely enough! And drawn away by the fermented cocnut milk....well, I would say, don't mention the coconut,we don't have one here yet,  but give the size in palmspans. And why not make something to eat while your fruit is yet unripe? Cook it? Well, but you don't have to do this. But you don't have to stick to an earthen plant either , invent something new, a reason why they should grow it in Strata with limited water.Maybe an extract from the unripe fruit which is a aphrodisiaca, LOL???Sorry, my fantasy drives me away....
Or the seeds, could they be of any use? As ornamentation for some cloth? Or as a spice?or a drug?

Invent.....

Umm... ok, I see. So it doesn't really have to have realistic qualities, really? Ok! Then I'll definitely make something up! Just wait! Only yeah... wait for tommorow, I'm too tired to write English today...

Territory

Bombox tree is very common on the coasts of South-Eastern Sarvonia, around in Adanian sea especially, Northern Nybelmar, Yamalquain archipelago, and also, on the various smaller islands of the tropical belt.

Usage

The coastal tribes of South-Eastern coast of Sarvonia, which include some elven and some human, have found many uses for this remarkable tree. The sharp trunk scales are sometimes used as tools for piercing or cutting food and cloth. Although pulp, present in the young fruit, is considered useless, it is said that the coastal people of Serpheloria have found a way to use it in medicine when cooked in a special way, which they choose to keep secret.
Also, in the past, the fruit of this palm is known to have been used in wars to scare the opponent with noise, since grown bomboxes can also blow up when they are thrown or shaken.

Myth/Lore

Many old parchments have been uncovered of the old coastal villages. Some contain history; some tales and myths.
It is said that once on a little island the God Grothar in his fury of a storm had shaken a coconut palm forest with thunder so great that all the coconuts suddenly began to burst. (P.S. I'm Russian)
And I really don't think I want to say anything else about this palm. Did I miss something again?

Ok, a few comments here:

1.) At newer entries we also have a "Reproduction" section, so I suggest to put everything concerning reproduction in an own paragraph.

2.) I see you haven't worked in Talia's proposal concerning the territory of the Bombox, but I suggest to do so. Also the Serphelorians are too far north and the "tropical belt" you refer to will lie much more to the south. This probably is something you don't know: The sun in Sorren, also called the Injèrá, see a first rough entry at the Compendium (will be updated soon BTW), moves in circles from east to west in front of the flat (!) world of Sorren, not around it in fact. Therefore the hottest climates are to the south (desert continent of Aeruillin), and the icelands are to the very north. The tropical belt may be much more south therefore, I suppose it covers the southernmost part of Santharia (parts of the desert of Rahaz-Dath) and the north of Aeruillin.

All right! Thanks for the info, I see this now. I'll fix it... and I don't really know about these territories, but I'll try to find out whatever there is.
I'll also fix the reproduction and all that, k! Just wait a bit!

The seed is released when the tight surface of the fruit cracks, sending it around in a several ped radius, accompanied by a loud explosion.

Territory

Bombox tree is very common on the coasts of southern Sarvonia (in Manthria, Sanguia and south Enthronia), southern Nybelmar, and the southern islands of Yamalquain archipelago. Some also grow in northern Doranthakar and southern Denilou - on the coasts of the Burning Sea.

Usages

The coastal tribes of Southern Sarvonia, which include some elven and some human, have found many uses for this remarkable tree. For example, the leaves are used for roof covering, elements of clothing, when cut in strands - weaving baskets, sandals and such, and making various fans and cone-like hats; very important in hot climate. The sharp trunk scales are sometimes used as tools for piercing or cutting food and cloth. Although pulp, present in the young fruit, is considered useless, it is said that the coastal people of Denilou have found a way to use it in medicine when cooked in a special way, which they choose to keep secret.
Also, in the past, the fruit of this palm is known to have been used in wars to scare the opponent with noise, since grown bomboxes can also blow up when they are thrown or shaken.

Reproduction

Bombox only grows on the coasts because the ocean is it’s way of sending the seeds to other shores. Even after months of “travel” the seeds remain alive on the water, and the currents and take them far, far away from home. Thousands of strals away! Bombox also likes it’s roots in the sea-water, so it will already become “sick” and dried up if set a stral away from the shore.
Flowers are fertilized by a very common way – through insects. There are two kinds of palm – male and female. The male ones have bright orange flowers with only thrums, and female flowers, though unnoticeable in blooming, have a very strong and sweet aroma. Insects get attracted to the brightness of the males, and the pollen sticks to their bodies. If they later on fly to a female flower, they drop the pollen off into the flower and it is fertilized.

Myth/Lore

Many old parchments have been uncovered of the old coastal villages. Some contain history; some tales and myths.
