Hopefully this nice little flowered plant will replace Lavender in our Santharian dialect. ^_^; It's really rough since I was kind of in a hurry to get it all done and finished. Let me know what you all think and let me know what I might add.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Allia

Categorization: Flower

The Allia is a small plant that bears a flower ranging from a soft violet to a grayish purple in color. This plant bares a dark purple berry cluster that, though poisonous, can be used for dying clothes. It is found across mid Santharia, thriving in heaths and fields as well as near forests.

Description: Allia is a rather small plant reaching no larger than a fore in height. It has a slender, deep-green stem from which leaves, shaped like elongated arrowheads, grow from. Leaves vary in size, appearing larger at the bottom of the plant and smaller at the top, but usually grow no larger than half a palmspan in length.

The flower of this plant, which usually blossoms in mid to late spring, is found in various shades of purple, ranging from a soft yet rich violet color to a duller, grayer purple hue. The flower contains five petals, two of which are larger than the others. Instead of growing facing upward, these flowers grow facing across with the two larger petals on the lower part of the flower and the three smaller ones on top. This makes it easier for insects, especially the Melise, to enter the flower and spread pollen among flowers.

In early to mid autumn, the petals fall away and a berry cluster is formed. This berry cluster contains a multitude of small berries connected to a central spire that grows out from where the flower once was, The spire to which the berries are connected, often called a berry spire, often curls in elegant fashions. The berries usually start out as an orange or orangish-yellow, but eventually ripens into red and finally a rich purple. These berries are often harvested for cosmetics or dye, though hey are poisonous to most animals.

Territory: The Allia is found in a wide range across the middle of the Santharian Kingdom, commonly living in heaths and meadows as well as near forests. They are found as far north as Voldar, growing around all but the northern most border of the Thaelon Forest. They are commonly found in the Heath of Jernaís, the Aurora fields, and the Heath at Salazar. The are also found around Vontron, the Shivering Wood, and Quallian, save the forests’ Western border, as well as around Istarin, Paelelon, and Almatrar. Allia also grow on the northern border of the Zeiphyrian Forest and around the all the borders of the Auturian woods except the western. It grow no farther south than the Tolonían Heath. These plants tend to be picky about there they grow and will not grow in or near an area where another Allia or some large plant has taken root. For this reason they are never found in clusters or bushes.

Usages: The Allia’s purple berry is poisonous and may be used for such a purpose. Ingestion of this berry usually leads to death within a few days. A victim of these berries may experience severe stomach pains. Some magi, especially clerics of Nehtor, have been known to be able to undo the effects of the poison. Allia berries are also used for dyes, most commonly to the Catharian tribe. In autumn, Cathairan women and children may be seen colleting these berries in baskets and aprons just for this purpose. They’re often used for various cosmetics as well. Allia are not usually planted in gardens due to their finicky nature.

::shrugs:: I don't know. I got the name from the latin term "Amellus" meaning "the purple Italian starwort." o.o;;

Well, my only critique would be that now we have a positive surplus of blue/purple-berried edible plants about.

It could engender confusion in Santharian berry gatherers, as all of these fruits seem indistinguishable!

Perhaps the Amellia berry could be inedible, or a different colour, or used for a cosmetic instead of food, or shaped like a cluster of tiny berries along a central spire.....

Just an idea!

PS. Amelia with one 'l' is a girl's name, while Camellia with a 'c' and two 'l's is a lovely flower.   How about Amelus, or Allia, or Mellia, so as not to cause any connotations?

I'd like to keep the berry purple so that it can replace lavender without any confusion. However, I will be happy to make it an inedible plant used only for dye and cosmetics, and I will also be hapy to make is a cluster of tiny berries alone a central spire.

What sort os cosmetic products should it be used for? Like... hair dye? o.O;

Allia sounds like a good name. ^_^;

Well, at least it doesn't remind you of Emillia or some other such name, eh? It might be that people in Santharia name their children after this flower. ^_^;;

Maybe we should do an entry on Children's names.. like a baby name book.

Woah!

Did Rayne just volunteer me to be part of Greybark's "Daddy Project"?   :lol     Gotta go back and read that post again...

Oh, and of course it's a hair dye!  How else does Rayne's hair get that lovely lavender...er.... allian.... colour, as shown in her signature portrait? :D

Now Graybark's daddy project, Mommy Judith. ^_^; I think I'll let him chose a name. I mean some sort of book featuring popular Santharian names found in different regions. It might be helpful to RPers.

Hello Rayne!

Erelen decided to try his hand on a plant next, and he made a first rough sketch of the Allia. See below... Like him know if there is something you have to comment. He'd also like to know especially if you can tell him if there is any color inside the flower mayhaps.

Let's see. The shape of the flower is off. The two larger petals are meant to be on the bottom and the three smaller petals are meant to be on the top. ^_^; Also, a darker violet might be nice.

It's a very beautiful drawing, though. I'm flattered that Erelen chose my plant to draw. He's a very talented artist indeed!
