To Gnufruk: Below you all references to goblins (sentences where the word "goblin" appears) are listed which you can currently find in the Santharian web. Nothing really spectacular, so there's enough space for detailed elaboration. And here we go:

***

ORCS (Compendium entry):
The numerous different orcish tribes and races with orcish roots like the OGERS and the

GOBLINS are spread in all parts of the known world and have brought havoc over many lands,

not only over the SARVONIAN continent.

AVAESTHORÍA PREFACE & CHAPTER III (german version):
Goblins are mentioned as creatures of darkness among others like orcs, ogers and trolls.

GNOMES, THEOLOGY:
It seems that Shanmoirei and his minions did many efforts to extinguish the races, but the

gods defended themselves and their creations against them. So dark ones, as Shanmoirei and

his daemons are also called, started to create their own races that should dominate. Thus

goblins and other races came into being. (see the whole text for details - elaborated by

Xaron)

COSMOLOGY OVERVIEW:
The races described in the "Cárpa'dosía" are just the initial four main races in the world

of Aér'ai'chán. Of course these were not the only races emerging from the blessing spirit

of Avá, but all those other races can all be derived from mixed elements, which gained

Spirit from the Thought of Avá (e.g. goblins, trolls, halflings are still in question

etc.).

CONFESSIONS OF A SANTHARIAN THIEF (by Ormelor):
I go back on a long line of mixed blood. Goblins, elves, centaurs, sidhe, kobolds, unicorns, gargoyles, humans, satyrs, dwarves, dragons… Name any race, and somewhere along my family line, you will find them…

***

Note: When developping goblins please try to keep the general picture of goblins in mind (Tolkien, AD&D or other role playing games). We shouldn't be too far away from the concept which is commonly used.

According to Tolkien "goblins are dwellers in darkness who were spawned for evil purposes. In earlier days they were called Orcs. Black-hooded, red-eyed and hateful in nature are these Goblin people, and though they are now reduced to beings committed to minor deeds of mischief, they were once a race bent on vast plans of terrible tyranny" (quoted from "A Tolkien Bestiary" by David Day, (c) 1979)

Or:

"Roundheaded imps with snub noses and wide, grinning mouths, Goblins possess greenish, yellow skin and tender, toeless feet. (...) Goblins wear clumsy, stone clogs. (...) Mechanical devices appeal to the clever cruelty intrisic to Goblins; they have invented many machines of torture as well as those useful in warfare and siege. Utility and strength mark most of their creations, but beauty eludes them. (...) Skilled miners, living in underground kingdoms, often an entire mountain range may be webbed by their passages (...) All Goblins have Nightvision and are blinded in daylight. Their average life-span is 80 years. Goblins stay below ground by day, but night sees them swarming the lands in search of amusement. These wily creatures are deceptively strong." (Rolemaster: Creatures & Monsters, (c) 1995)

I like the Rolemaster version best, because they refer to Goblins as a little more independent. Tolkien meant that Goblins were just a big tribe of Orcs (although they were less numerous and were shorter with better sense of smell).

The word 'Goblin' means (directly translated to norwegian) 'Tusse', that has nothing to do with Goblins that all ('Tusse' was someting peasants belived in in norway at the end of the middle-age, it was a hairy little creature, more like a small Troll).

I think that since the typical Goblin likes to hide in mountains and under the earth, they could have been a mix of Fire and Earth...

If Goblins like to hide in mountains and under the ground, that would have caused war with the Dwarves sometimes, wouldnt it?

Of course, not all Goblins have to be this way...

The Orcs betrayal against the Elves , corrupted them, right?
But Goblins and Ogers (i belive it is Ogres) were just roaming the wilderness at that time. And also, Goblins and Ogers are not actually orcs, they are just mixes of Fire and other elements (that would be like saying that Brownies are actually Dwarfs). That dont make them corrupted, or what?
Proposal: The Goblins and Ogers that later joined the Orcs in their cause became corrupted, but the ones that didnt care, stayed neutral in mind, like the Humans...

Well, that was all...

Yup, Fire and Earth, that's evident, but I'd also add a little Water to the goblins - at least Fire and Earth also are trolls, but goblins aren't maybe that ferocious or dangerous like orcs or trolls, and they are weaker than those two races (though if encountered in groups the can be deadly) - see the Gnufruk pic: Goblins can also look cute;)

War with the dwarves could be arranged, yup. Just needs to be elaborated.

And, yes, we can have different kinds of goblins, who just settled at different locations, although "good" goblins of course won't be as friendly as hobbits e.g. But at the famous tavern somewhere at northern Sarvonia there will live some friendly ones, eh?

We need a Compendium entry here too, Gnufruk! If you intend to write one have a look at the descriptions of the other races - try to stick to the main things to describe: Appearance, Cosmological Origin, Mode of Living/Habits, Family, Society and Culture.

Ok...
Good idea about the water...
Now you will have to add some more to that 'Creation of all things' dingy (cant remember its name... was it Carpa'Dosian myth or something like that?), because im going to make the Compendium entry for Goblins! And later, perhaps, the Ogers (i belive it is spelled O-G-R-E-S)...

P.S. The famous tavern will soon be finished...

Yup, that's fine - looking forward to it:)  And you're right: It indeed is called Ogres, "Ogers" is the German version...

How about this:

Text between [ and ] are not part of the proposal, they are just notes.

GOBLINS, the. Lesser cousins of the ORCS.

Appearance: There exist hundreds of kinds of Goblins, but most Goblins are about half the size of Orcs with rather weak bodies and they have sharp pointed ears like their Orc brethren. The colors in their skin varies from green to grey to human flesh-like. Their noses tend to be quite long although countless others have flat noses, like the ORCS.
Goblins that serve the Orcs tend to be thinner than those that are free. Most Goblins like living in caves under the ground and many mountains are perforated with their tunnels and passages although some Goblins have found their way up on the 'right' side of the ground [Like the ones from the Nybelmar continent where Goblin Kings rules countries (pleezz!!).] Most Goblins living in the cold north of the Sarvonian continent have their bodies covered with fur, although some others [Living in the cold north of the Sarvonian continent] have rather naked bodies like the orcish tribe of RH'OMR'OC, that live just north of the TANDALA MOUNTAINS. Clothing is a common sight of Goblins, ranging from leather armour to towels to tunicas. When at war (mostly because of the ORCS) they tend to use the clothing they use every day or leather- or fur armor, sharp scimitar-like swords, spears, clubs, bows and everything else they can create or steal.

Cosmological Origin: According to the Cárpa'Dosían myth Goblins was created after the ORCS when the RAIN OF LIFE bearing the spirit of the High Goddess Avá the Beautiful fell on Aér'aí'chán. After the Orcs emerged from the element of Fire, there still was some Fire left. The Fire that was left managed to burn some Earth and then Water spilled some Water on the burned Earth, and are therefore called ...... [write some fitting stylish styrash here] by the elves.
Goblins share the same history as orcs.

Mode of living/habits: Goblins have a very varying lifespan, ranging from 20 (when they serve the orcs) to 80 (when they are free, like the Goblins in Nybelmar). At the age of 15, the Nybelmar Goblins start combat training, if they want to. Orc servant Goblins start to fight at the age of 10 or 11.
Goblins tend to set the females higher than the orcs.

The Nybelmar Goblins eat mainly roasted or boiled meat from sheeps, cows, deers or anything else their hunters can hunt.
The wild, free Goblins mainly eats birds or fresh meat, while the Orc servants mainly eats salty meat.
Cannibalism is also a common sight within the Goblin society. No Goblins really trust eachother, and the stupidest of them eat the ones they dont like. Violence dont play such a big role in the life of Goblins.

Family, Society and Culture: As many people mistake Goblins for small orcs, it is also common by humans, elves, dwarves and gnomes to think that the Goblins dont have a culture that all. In fact, the Goblins of Orcal [big city in Nybelmar, will make a compendium entry later] are even more civilised than the humans living in Strata, as they have build Orcal in a very human-like way, it looks kind of like Milkengrad, only with different architecture. Most Goblins tend to use the orcish KH'OM'CHR'OM tongue, although the wisest and most adventurous of them also speak the tongue of HUMANS, DWARFS, and GNOMES.
Goblins can be divided into three groups, each with different societies, cultures and religions:

The Orcal Goblins, the most civilised

The wild Goblin tribes in Northern Sarvonia

The Orc Servant Goblins

The Orcal Goblins are the most civilised, as they build large cities, fortresses and trading ports, have a more civilised look on strangers and manage to control their temper better than the other Goblins. The subjects of their king is free, like in the human realm of SANTHARIA. The Orcal Goblins belive in the Gods of Gork, the god of all hard things, and Mork, the god of all soft things {will make a compendium entry here too] .

The wild goblin tribes are very similar to the human barbarians, although some of them build small societies, like the famous trade port of Shadowdale [compendium entry coming up on this one too!].

The orc servant Goblins follow the same KH'AD'OM system as the orcs, and are mostly treated as KH'OS, being farmers and simple workers.

All Goblins call the ones that are gifted with magic abilities UON'KH'AL'ON. These are very rare at both orcish and goblinish socities. The most famous of them in all time is Gnufruk Gruknag Groku, the Pathfinder [will soon make a compendium entry here too] that was born in the year of 1632 a.s.
Many tribes of Goblins exist, but the following are the biggest, wisest or most civilised.

The Orcal Goblins, located in the country by the same name in Nybelmar,

The Shadowdalers, a very accepting and civilised tribe, located in and around the trading port of Shadowdale

And the Tho'gr'uk clan, the most rampaging goblin tribe known on the Aér'aí'chán.

I think im finished now...

That's pretty fine, Gnufruk. I would have done it pretty similar. Very nice and good job so far:)

Just continue on and finish your description! When it's ready I'll put it on the site. Perhaps I will make a few additions/changes on some minor things or just to elaborate on a certain part (e.g. adding some more interesting things from other descriptions of goblins I have here). No objections also to a goblin king in Nybelmar:)

P.S. Got your mail, and already have assigned the title of "Pathfinder (male goblin)" to your character in the RPG Board:)

Many thanx, Gnufruk! Will read the entry in detail and then integrate it on the site. Should be up at this weekend's update. Feel free to add further details at new Compendium entries. The more entries we have on associated topics to this entry the more depth we will achieve.

P.S. Don't forget to mail me your membership information so that I can add you to the team list, Gnufruk!
