I wrote this basic overview in a different thread, but nobody saw it, so I moved it here. Now I would like feedback before finalizing some of this, please? I didn't get some in the other thread after about a week of waiting, but perhaps here will not be so bad.

Well, here are some details about the ships...

Created in the town of Whisper, by a man high on the team that built the airships, who was in charge of designing the actual physical ship, along with coordinating the piecing together of parts - they needed someone who wasn't putting their complete attention to putting it together to give some instructions, and he was the logical choice. I will come up wit a name for him later, but he's not nearly as famous as Ganrim Windrider. These ships are considered quite a few steps below airships, and not much farther above sailing ships, but to other civilizations are amazing relics. They were built for a while quickly, but production has died off some in recent years. Anyway, this man settled down for about ten years; living off of the wages building airships got him was plenty for life, but he got restless. He wanted another undertaking, but a complex one, and he slowly built the idea in his head. Finally, when the planning was done, he asked a few water and wind mages that were friends of his to come along with him to work on it. Then, they all moved to Whisper, a town on the southernmost edges of the main island of Quel'tra'loh. For five years, they tested different processes, and finally decided on the most efficient one. They had by this time built ships, but hadn't completed them, so that they would be ready for actual testing. A deep keel was built on the boat, that was quite wide near the bottom of the boat. Through this was made a tube, with various easily enchanted metals and stones lining the inside. Then, they imbued these stones as a whole wit the power to draw water through them. This would serve as the main propulsion, but they also enchanted the sails, which were woven of a thick thread made of the skyweed: both strong and smooth. This would not let the least amount of wind through, but was much lighter than canvas. The stern of the boat was set with a large gemstone, set upon a high pedestal. It was imbued with the power to allow a mage to easily call up a small wind or to change slightly the direction or intensity of an already present wind. In this way, they made sure that the sailors would need mages, and thus would possibly hire them from Quel’tra’loh. These were all properties of the larger ships, used mainly for trading or carrying cargo, though a few would be used as warships.

A second type of ship was also made, called a Surfrunner, which was a much smaller and more maneuverable ship. It affected the ocean immediately around it, and created a wave at the stern, then used it to push the boat. A magic-user would need to control these, and it was mainly kept around the seas of Corloth as a fast messenger ship, and an escort. These boats had to be manned by mages, so that they could control the wave, for it was too hard for the common person to use levers to steer the ship; there would need to be at least five controlling the intensity of the wave, its speed, the amount of dulling of outside waves, and other problems of the like. One major problem with this is that the boat didn’t keep the wave from breaking, so it had to be carefully monitored and kept below a certain level. They also didn’t work well close to shore, where the shallowing sea floor would cause it to break anyway, and catch the boat in the wave. No sails were ever put on this craft, because they just raised the center of balance. They also had a very shallow draft so as to stay upright while surfing along the angled surface of the wave, so at lower speeds could also go up very shallow areas. Sometimes a wave cannot be kept up, so the people manning the vessel would have to break out the oars and punting poles.

----------
Not yet very detailed, these are the ideas that I could come up with in about ten minutes. I wanted to give an idea of where I was going with it to see if it fit in with the ideas already presented. Please inform me if I should change it. It will become more elaborated anyway, and I am going to uise the Surfrunners for my own private use, though a few may have been sold.

Looking at the date this was posted and the amounts of views I am the firs to comment.

I like these ships but the first seems to be a little powerful.  How many mages would there have to be hired to man the ship.  I can only see the use of one, using the gemstone to alter wind.  It has speed from its own modified jets as well as the power from the wind that a mage could control.

Is this mage a from a certain element or from any element.  Also what level of mage if you don't mind posting.

For the both ships could you state what knid of mages needed and what levels.  It seems that they are far more advance ships than any on the ocean so I would assume they would be a) Hard to come by and b) Hard to man.

I guess the ideas sounds nice, Stormcrow, especially if you only need ten minutes for them, though of course bringing them in proper shape is necessary. See e.g. Capher's Avennorian Ships entry (and the sections used there) for details on how ships can be made into an entry.

So what would be interesting for example is when and why these ships were used (and why they aren't used much today anymore), e.g. there could be parts around Quel'tra'loh where strong winds are pretty seldom, so that the usage of magical means was necessary.

Interesting stories/myths could be about abductions of mages in order to capture such ships, but maybe it could be the mages' oath of Quel'tra'loh to remain loyal to their homeland till their death and to not tell others how to activate the runes on the ship etc. So there sure is some stuff for legends I'd say.

Finally! Thank you, peoples, for comments. I will, of course, be fixing them up to scale. Thanks Art for the tip on how to do ships.

For the first ship I am a bit sketchy on the details, and anything can be changed. To keep down on its power, it will probably need a couple of mages to power it. I assume that they would have to be from Air, as that's what the magic is using, but perhaps any mage can use it because of the stone. I'd have to think about that for a little while. The stone is meant to increase their power, so lesser mages couldn't do much with it, maybe just a breeze to sooth the sailors, but a great archmage guy could call quite a gale with enough power.

Manning them wouldn't be too hard except for the small problem of finding the mages. Getting the ships themselves would be quite difficult, as there are only probably about 50 originally, and maybe 25 by now.

Perhaps the mages of Quel'tra'loh had them specially imbued with powers that make them hard to figure out by mages, and thus other magical powers would have a hard time using them. I'm sure this would result in the attempted capture of Corlothan mages, but not much.

Much to think about. The next step will be to put what I have here into that mentioned format.

Agghh! Busy week. About 4 tests, one of which was today and supposed to be very evil. Studied a long time for it, and it turned out to be easier than I expected. Anyway, I won't be putting this into the format today, or Saturday, and probably not Sunday. Maybe next week, if everything goes well.

You see, I almost never study for tests. I just began to last year on some of the harder ones. And I know that it isn't becasue I studied that it was easy. I thought that there was going to be more on it than there was, so I ended up studying much of the material for no reason. But oh well.

I don't think that I have studied for a test (Not including exams) in 3 years. I seem to still get 80s and 90s without studying. :D

Anyways... I'll be waiting to read the final version. :)

I have never known reality,I am not part of what you call normal.I do not belong in space or time,I linger inbetween,Ever present yet forever parted.

Ah, too bad that internet is so restricted in China, Ferra. Can't be much fun surfing the web that way if Big Brother's watching you... Hope you enjoy your stay nevertheless!

Hi, dear Arti and other developers!

This year I am in China and cannot use any Google services including YouTube. For this reason I stopped uploading new Nepris videos. I can also not read any comments there.

It just crossed my mind that this information might be useful to you.

Cheers
