The atlatl.  Interesting weapon, perhaps we could find somewhere in Caelereth to put it.  I don't think I'd want to do the entry myself though, unless I happen to get some very good ideas for it, so I'm just putting this here and hoping someone will get inspired to write something.

Not quite.  The 'spear' is actually quite flexible, and the atlatl itself is used a little like a sling, to throw the projectile at the target.  The links at the bottom of the page lead to pages with more detailed information on how the weapon works.

the idea of the atlatl is to serve as an arm extension, increasing the arc of the spear when launching, wich effectively increases the speed at wich it flies... the longer the lever used, the more force it exerts..

This is a very old weapon, I saw it in an amusing film about  a group of early humans searching for fire. Don't know, if it was show in English. If you find it, I recommend it - and it shows, how this weapon is used (It was an advantage when fighting with groups which had just a normal spear or when hunting animals, for the distance to the prey can be longer)

The film:

To make it more Santharian the throwing arm could be made of bone and it could be used by some of the desert peoples. Making an atlatl is actually very easy, I learned to make one in a wilderness survival class I took.
