Wow, I've been all over lately. But I do have a question about a weapon. Is there such a thing in Santharia as a chain-like weapon. Um...for any of you who have played DnD, it's called a spiked chain. Basically, it's a long chain, I dunno how long, but it has spikes on either side of it, the person hold it in the middle and can damage and trip opponents. I just thought it would be an interesting weapon. I thought I looked, but I didn't *think* I saw anything like that.

Hi there Kareesh,

you can always use the search function for matters like this, see the 'looking glass' on the top right of the menu. I did a quick search and found nothing similar to the spiked chain whatsoever. Maybe you can attach the weapon to a culture which might have developed this weapon in a logical way. Most non-standard weapons, like for example all those fancy martial arts weapons from the far east, have been developed from farmer tools, so maybe you can think of something similar.

I dunno if I would start work on it yet. I have quite a bit on my plate right now. Well....ok, some stories that I have a brain freeze right now. But maybe sometime in the future. When my schedule frees up a bit in the summer, then I should be able to produce more stuff.

Hm...I'll have to look at different cultures and stuff to see where this would fit in at. Also, I don't really know what type of farmer's tool it would evolve from. Maybe tying something to the end of a rope....Hm....*ponders*

If someone wants to take this up, they may. I don't really mind. Or if they have any input in it. I could just start with the basic layout in my spare time.....Dunno...I guess I'll just see where it takes me.

I just broused thru the weapons at wikepedia and the closest real world example I can find is a manriki. From what I read its usually about 11 inches long but I don't see any reason why you cant make one thats a lot longer.

sounds like a cool idea

Check out the Chinese rope dart.  It's a very long rope (or chain, in which case it's known as a chain dart) with a metal dart attached to one end.  Quite a versatile weapon, if a little hard to use.  Doesn't look anything like the (apparently fictional) spiked chain weapon google showed me though.

Isn't this quite similar to a whip?

This is a picture of it according to the DnD book. It's the long chain-thingy in the middle on the bottom. According to the book, it has a 10 ft. reach, but I'm thinking that would be too big to handle. Of course, one could size it down according to their needs. I would think that a person would hold it either by the large circle in the middle, or the two smaller ones. I'm not a huge weapon expert, so I don't really know how one would wield it.

perhaps this can be developed from a bolas-like hunting weapon? that would make some sense, apart from the fact you're not throwing this one.. Maybe you could make a smaller version as a ranged weapon as well..

Like I said, I don't know much about weapons, although I would like to learn. I just thought it would be an interesting weapon to add to Santharia.

Ruil, our weapons expert seems to have disappeared - but yeah, wouldn't mind having such a weapon in Santharia as well, whoever would like to develop it:)

Here's the description according to the DnD Player's Handbook v. 3.0 (I think....) Just putting it up for anyone who's interested about where I got the idea and stuff. I already posted the pic....

Quote:
Chain, Spiked: A spiked chain has reach. You can strike opponents 10 feet away with it. In addition, unlike other weapons with reach, you can use it against an adjacent foe. Because the chain can wrap around an eneymy's leg or other limbe, you can make trip attacks with it. If you are tripped during your own trip attempt, you can drop the chain to avoid getting tripped.

The rest of it is technical stuff. I dunno if I could develop it or not....if no one else really wants to, I could do it, but it will have to wait till I'm done with some other stuff.

One way it could have come to existance would be:
Stick -> club -> mace -> flail -> ball & chain -> spiked chain

Or it could have come about from somebody looking at a whip and a flail and putting the two together. Something like that. I would think that it would come more from a whip's background then a flail's background. But that is IMHO.

Well, chains are sometimes used as improvised weapons.  I figure someone could decide to put spikes on them, creating such a weapon.  That'd work, no?
