Leather is the lightest of all armors, though it is still tough enough to resist many types of weapons. Leather is defined as any armor made from the skin of an animal, ranging from the lightweight rabbit leather (used mainly for ceremonial purposes) to the heavy, rare, expensive, and almost metallic drake leather.

DESCRIPTION: Leather is worn in many different ways, ranging from simple bracers to a full suit including aprotection for every part of the body. Helmets made from leather range from simple, metal-reinforced helms to elaborate hats decorated with feathers and jewelry to leather caps. Leather is generally brown and made from the hide of domestic creatures, such as cows, sheep or goat, wild animals, such as deer and boar; and more exotic animals, like Giant Spiders,  Ráhaz'Estár Snakes, and even Wargs.
Leather can be dyed many colors, though it's natural color is brown. This is because the bark used in the tanning process changes the color, be it red, tan, or purple to a deep brownish color, much like the bark it is soaked in.
There are two ways of ranking leather. The first is by amount of protection. The second is flexibility. There are three tiers in both ranking systems. The first tier is best, and the third is worst. This system was designed by a merchant and armorer commitee who meet biannualy to review current placement.

HARDNESS SCALE
First Tier
Drake
Giant Snakes
Giant Wolves

Second Tier
Boar
Bear
Cow

Third Tier
Sheep
Goat
Deer

FLEXIBILITY SCALE
First Tier

Second Tier

Third Tier

USAGE
The most common leather armor (deer) is very flexible, allowing for unhindered movement at the cost of some protection. It will generally stave off most projectiles from medium to far-range, but spears will easily puncture it.Swords are generally poor preformers against leather, though it is almost useless against blunt weapons like hammers or maces. It is used mainly by scouts, bowmen, and others who tend to avoid melee combat. Agile warriors will also commonly use leather

DEVELOPMENT
Tanning and armor making are combined in this ancient art.
The first step is to procure the necessary animal hides and clean and dry them properly to prevent rotting. Then, the top layer of skin is removed, leaving the thicker, useful layer that will eventually be tanned and the bottom layer of flesh, which is removed in a procees called fleshing. In fleshing, the flesh must be cut away perfectly. One slip of the knife can cause the entire skin to be ruined. Once the skin is fleshed, it is cut to the neccassary thickness, after which it is cleaned again, using acids and salt. The skin is now ready for tanning.

The leather is placed in an immense vat filled with bark from the Oak and Maple trees and water. It is left at high tempertures for several days, after which it is ready for finishing. The tanned leather is mixed with tallow and grease to give it a waterproof covering. The final step is drying. It must be left out for a certain amount of time. if it is left out too short, it will become soft and limp. If it is left out for more then about a week (this will vary depending on weather conditions, including heat and humidity) it will begin to rot.

Leather has been used in different industries (such as clothes- making, book-binding, and shoe-making) but all of these use different methods of tanning the leather. The method mentioned abouve is the only way to  properly treat leather for protection pourposes.

HISTORY
Leather is the oldest type of armor, and records of it being used date back to ancient conflicts and skirmishes in the Age of Awakening. It was most likly developed as a by-product of hunting, in an effort to use as much of the animal as possible.

The first leather was most likly made by primitive humans who hunted boar and deer. Elves are also a likly contender for the first leather, as they have a long history of crafting it and seem particulary skilled in the craft.

Famous leather makers include; Tannian Hithus, the man who refined the leather making process and discovered the best barks for the tanning process, Felishh Cava'hiem, an elven seamstress who came up with the current process of crafting leather, and the husband-and-wife huaman team of Tallin and Nilliz Hetfer, well known for thier dangeourus exploits into the dens of exotic animals to craft some of the finest leather known to Santharia.

I have something to say: DON'T METNION DRAGON LEATHER. dragon scales exsist, but leather??? also, as I know, dragons aren't that easy to find, so I doubut you can make an armour with something you won't find and won't want to find.

My comments will, as always, be in green

I'm no armour expert, so I can't really say anything on that. I did put some thoughts that came into my mind as I was reading. Is there any more history that you could put, like how people started using the skins of animals for armour? Just a thought. Over all very well put together.

Also, I think that there is dragon leather. I'm not positive about that. I mean, their skin is kinda like a snake, so if you take the scales off, surely you could use the stuff underneath, right? Again, I could be wrong.

I have a few comments

Leather should come in more colors then brown especially exotic leather from strangley colored animals.

but swords and other bladed weapons will eventually hack or pierce through most types and most types are almost useless against blunt weapons like hammers or maces.

Some of the animals on Caelereth are extremely tough and their leather should be able to take quite a blow

Expand the development their should be more then one process for making leather. Especially if it has been made for a long time and it is widely made.

I'd make this entry longer go in to some more detail check ou this leather entry in wikipedia to help you get some more ideas.

Also, the entire Coór'hém tribe wears black leather :)

It will generally stave off most arrows and spears (not an expert on armour... but leather armour seems more used to prevent grazing blows, not full on blows from spears. Piercing weapons like that would likely pierce through leather almost immediately. Just my opinion on that.), but swords and other bladed weapons will eventually hack or pierce through it and it is almost useless against blunt weapons like hammers or maces. It is used mainly by scouts, bowmen, and others who tend to avoid melee combat.

It looks like a good start. I think more history on leather armour would be appreciated. Where did the idea of using leather as armour come in, who pioneered the technique? Just some more depth in that and I'd be happy.

I concentrated on spelling and grammar to help Arti out when this gets approved for the site. As I am by no means a veteran, just thought I'd try and lend a hand.

I don't think, you will find dragon leather armour. These animals are so rare, that they are believed to  be a myth, so mighty, that I dare to say, you nearly can't slaughter them to get their skin. Take drakes, they are special enough, this might fit better.

Also, it has been stated that leather armour is the lightest, and essentially the weakest of the armours. Why would anyone risk almost certain death merely for leather? I wouldn't:pet

Dragon Leather would proboly be much tougher and possiblly fire-resistant. I could try to come up w/ special qualities, but Ill proboly go with Tals suggestion and use Drakes.

I strongly recommend to do some more research opn leather and leather armour on the internet as Xera already mentioned. There are a lot of details one can find about leather armour to add to this entry - so far the entry is very basic, though quite ok what we have here so far.

As has also been mentioned explaining that leather is the most natural kind of armour would be good - as it is a by-product of hunting for food. Varieties of such kind of armour then would be bear skins and all that kind, which also protect from the cold, so trying to sketch that part wouldn't hurt.

Mentioning a sort of ranking concerning leather armour probably is also a good idea: some beasts might only provide very light armour (some even cannot be used for more than regular clothing), other beasts could provide pretty strong kinds of armour. Drakes, wyrms and larger serpents surely are the candidates for the best leather armour around. Also mentioning important dwarves or smiths, tailors, mages who are known for enhancing leather armour dramatically could be mentioned here. The elves could be very adept in this kind of work, they'd rarely wear plate armour.

So still quite a bit to do, though a good start has been made already - more details and Santhariarization please, and we'll have a cool and important entry here! :D

Alright, finally got back to work ;P. Anyways, to continue with the dragon debate, the dragons wouldnt be slaugtered just for the armor. Itd be more like if you defeated one in a fight, every merchant in the city would end up begging for some leather.

Nsikigan, Dragons are almost non-existant so the use of dragon hide as armor is virtually impossible. I think you should listen to Talia and just go with drakes. If someone wanted and had the resources they could have the leather enchanted but that would be very expensive making enchanted leather very rare. But again, dragons are pretty much a myth on Santharia so...

This is my first weapons Uri :)  Comments in lime

Leather is the lightest of all armors(What about cloth?  Though it is does not offer much protection from weapons, it still protects the person wearing it from the elements), though it is still tough enough to resist many types of weapons. Leather is defined as any armor made from the skin of an animal, ranging from the lightweight rabbit leather (used mainly for ceremonial purposes) to the heavy, rare, expensive, and almost metallic drake leather(I thought it was decided not to mention this).

DESCRIPTION: Leather is worn in many different ways, ranging from simple bracers to a full suit including a harness for chest protection, boots, gloves, bracers, arm protection, and helmets, plus neck protection(awkwardly worded.). Helmets made from leather range from simple, metal-reinforced(These would not be considered to be full leather than.  Use this as one extreme and plain leather as another) caps to elaborate hats decorated with feathers and jewelry. Leather is generally brown(no.  It can be dyed to any color.) and made from the hide of domestic creatures, such as cows, sheep or goat, wild animals, such as deer and boar; and more exotic animals, like Giant Spiders, Ráhaz'Estár Snakes, and even Wargs. Leather can be dyed many colors, though it will almost always turn out brown, no matter the color of the original hide(no.  See above comment.  It is just cheaper to leave it brown so it is commonly left that way). This is because the bark used in the tanning process changes the color(along with dyes afterwards). There are two ways of ranking leather. The first is by amount of protection. The second is flexibility. There are three tiers in both ranking systems. (Explain system more.  Its hard to understand if first tier is the best or the worst ect.  What factors are used for classification?  Are their any tools?  An official checker?)

HARDNESS SCALE
First Tier
Drake
Giant Snakes
Giant Wolves

Second Tier
Boar
Bear
Cow

Third Tier
Sheep
Goat
Deer

FLEXIBILITY SCALE
First Tier
Deer
Giant Snake

Second Tier
Sheep
Goat
Cow
Giant Wolf

Third Tier
Drake
Bear
Boar

USAGE
Leather armor is very flexible, allowing for unhindered movement at the cost of some protection(not ture.  It can hinder your movement to varying degress based upon the leather used(your teir system) and what it is reinforced with). It will generally stave off most arrows and thrown spears(nope.  Spears easily puncture leather. As do arrows at certain distances.  Instead here say projectiles released from a consierable distance), but swords and other bladed weapons will eventually hack or pierce(...Many swords and other bladed weapons have less of a chance to puncture then a spear.  A spear enters through a puncture wound, while it takes a while to hack through the hardened armor.  So, slicing is hardest, spears and other puncturing techniques are middle, hammers are most effective) through most types of leather and it is almost useless against blunt weapons like hammers or maces. It is used mainly by scouts, bowmen, and others who tend to avoid melee combat. True to only a certain extent.  Agility warriors, such as elves would prefer leather.

I think Iv'e left you with lots to think of for now.  When you edit just give me a bell-ring or color your changes.  On the whole, I like the entry though  Keep up the good work.  :thumbup
