This thing comes courtesy of one of my latest Biology lessons. Principle: Its brain doesn't die first, its respiratory system does.

Appearance
The Vilerat, to most appearances, is a slightly green-skinned giant mouse. On average they are two handlengths long and one handspan wide, are covered with green-tinged fur except for the wormlike tail, have a pointed nose, whiskers, and two very noticable incisors. Often they carry parasites.

Special Abilities
The Vilerat, besides being one of the ugliest and most prolific beasts of Sorren, is unique in its method of death. Before its brain dies, its respiratory system does. This results in its flesh becoming highly acidic within seconds. Within one minute of respiratory shutdown, it melts into a puddle of vile yellowish goo that can melt almost anything, called vilique. It takes one hour in an open space to dissapate. Said fluid is one of the more unpleasant ingredients in several spells of Ximax.

Territory
The Vilerat is found nearly anywhere there is garbage, rotting flesh... basically, if you don't want to touch it, there are Vilerats somewhere near it. They are most numerous around the major cities of Santharia, like Santherra or Nybelmar, where they exist in vast warrens, deep within the sewers.

Diet
It doesn't matter what stage of decay it's in, Vilerats will eat it. From the fresh victim of an assassin to a piece of month-old spittleshell, Vilerats will eat anything that we consider edible, and a great deal that we don't.

Habits
The vilerats are only observed to have two widely known habits. When their warrens are threatened, they swarm anything that might be attacking it. As one of the survivors of one of these extermination campaigns can testify, it is an "utterly terrifying experience. Even the killed ones' stench helped them... I only could save one man... Jara-aaahl!"
Gavan Kuldyir died in the Nyermersys Asylum, 223 A.S.
Their other habit is when outnumbered, they will tear into each other, producing puddles of vilique to attempt to even the odds.
Otherwise, they act as normal scavengers, stealing food by night, breeding and sleeping by day.

Mating
Vilerats basically breed every chance they get. Male meets female during scavenging, they'll breed. The female gestates for three months. The young are nurtured in the warrens until they are large enough to strike out on their own, generally three or four weeks.

Well, thoughts?

Don't want to meet one of them!!
Why don't you call them rats?
I only hope, that they aren't found as far South as Strata! RatBrownies are enough . Have you thought about their relation to the Ratbrownies?

Actually a very good addition to the ecosystem.

People throw ecological balances way out of whack with what they consume, and even more with what they don't.

Rats are nature's answer to people (oh, what a charming thought!) - at least to city people.  Smaller communities usually have ways to process and filter their wastes back into the ground (hey, now we have toilets, thanks, oh Mistress of the Shendar!)

Oh, Talia, BTW,  I can't believe YOU are the one voting to call them just rats!  Usually you go for exotic and difficult- to -spell nomenclature with apostrophes scattered throughout   :)   ;)     :P  !

Personally,  I like "Vilerats" - distinctive, descriptive, and easy to remember....  well done!

And, of course, I'm nature's answer to all that is good in the world!

Anyway, looks fine, but I think Talia is right when you could just call them rats.

You misunderstood me, Judith! Vilerat is great, just in the description I would replace 'giant mouse' with rat-like creature.

Assume you mean Santhala and Nyermersys, huh?

Damn, I thought that at least Santherra was right... Lemme get this straight. Santharia: Country. Santherra: State. Santhala: City. And I did mean Nyermersys... I don't know what I was thinking.

Xarl,
Sounds like an alright addition to the sewer ecosystem to me. However, to quote Talia "Have you thought about their relation to the Ratbrownies?"
They would make good rivals, but we somehow need to either strike an equilibrium between the two groups, or have them somehow naturally separated.....they seem like they would come into constant conflict, which is fine by me, but we need a reason why one or the other has not yet been completely eliminated. Ideas?
