Shavak

Overview
Worshipped by a cult known as The True Vision, Shavak is a powerful High Demon who lives on a world he calls Vesti Allna. None know what it really is, if it is actually a world of it's own or just part of the Underworld. No one except for Shavak and the demons he rules.

Appearance
7 peds tall, with shoulders and chest 3 peds wide, tapering to 2.5 peds at the waist and downward. He is thickly layered in muscle and looks somewhat human, but with a hairless body. His eyes are feline in shape, but with human pupils, aside from the fact that they are green. His hands have claws .5 peds long, the claws on his feet half that. His teeth are many, and sharp as daggers. He walks on the balls of his feet like a predator stalking prey and is a sight to be feared when more than his eyes are seen. Usually he is covered by a blood red cloud, though, and only his eyes shine through.

Mythology

The Myth: Shavak is believed to have once been the god of Vesti Allna. But at some point a force opposed him, whether Vesti Allna's inhabitants or some rival god. The paradise Shavak had built with the help of his people was destroyed by the force sent by his opposition. In turn Shavak turned that force into demons, the demons that now serve him. With them he destroyed his rival, but only had a broken, charred world filled with demons to rule over. That is the story that is told, but it is not true.

The Fact: Vesti Allna is a continent in surrounded by an ocean of blood in the Netherworld on the underside of Sorren. Shavak was once a powerful demonologist, one of the first, and he actually created breeds of demons. He was able to change his form many times, and that power he still uses to change the forms of the Visionaries that follow him. One day a High Demon appeared to destroy him, as he was getting far too powerful. Shavak ended up killing the High Demon, feasting on it's body and becoming one himself. He travelled to the Netherworld and discovered Vesti Allna, bringing his demon minions with him to set up a dark empire. Soon he became bored with his continent and sent a vision to a demonologist in Ximax and started The True Vision cult.

Symbol
His symbol is that of his own eyes, as that is what most see. The True Vision has used this symbol in their CoA.

Followers
Visionaries, cultists of The True Vision, worship Shavak like a demon-god. The human cult is filled with powerful demonologists and demon-worshipping clerics, all of whom are transformed and sorted into castes by Shavak when they join the cult.

-----
Here's the High Demon worshiped by The True Vision. I'll be putting up the demons who serve him later, as well as an entry for Vesti Allna, the Netherworld continent he rules.

Tarq:  great entry and all, but could we possibly keep demons OUT of the Bestiary?

They SHOULD be in Cosmology and Religion.

For one thing they don't fit the Beast profile in the Compendium, and for another they are scaring the Dune Mice.

Shooo!

This one is designed as a deity thing, but all of my other demons have been beasts, and designed accordingly. Not all demons are necessarily a cosmological thing.

Tarq, High Demons are in Cosmology. Our lower demons, like Jhulny here *pats it on its squishy head* can stay here, but ever since Khalkoroth *pats him on his rocky, horned head* tried to start an insurrection among the sheepies, *dodges charging Black Hart* the High Demons have been kicked out. *Blast-Pow-fizzzz....*
Just do a People description, and tack on Special Abilities. And head to Cosmology. Incidentally, which of the High Demons do you want him to supplant? Fire, Ice, Plague, and maybe Fate are open, though I think Fate might be a bit much, and I'm working on a seperate history for her. (she being Seyella's split personality from when the Tree of Life was busted) Chaos far, far too powerful, so no to Shavak supplanting him.

Sorry, Tarq, I have to disagree with you again, seriously this time.

"Beasts" by common consent have been defined as non-sentient or semi-sentient.  They include the common categories as have been suggested elsewhere of insects, birds, reptiles, water creatures, herbivores, carnivores, domesticated animals, and so on.   In some cases the rules have been bent a bit so that someone could fit in his or her pet project which wouldn't have been accepted as a "Race"...

However, demons ARE an accepted part of Santharia and they are commonly considered to be sentient.  They have their own territory, hierarchy, dwelling places, rules (albeit evil and twisted) and ability to process information.  They are also known to exist in another 'sphere' of reality (the Netherworld) from which they can apparently be summoned.  They are associated with vice, evil, foulness, destruction, and all things wicked, by religious definition.  They are the antithesis of good, purity and holiness...also religious terms.

Thus I would have to say that no, demons are not beasts, as a cuuloo or Sor'yint horse might be considered.  Nor are they a 'race' such as human, pyserpent, dwarf, or brownie, which all came physically and spiritually from the Tree of Life and reside in the Upperworld of Aae're'chaan.  And High or Low demon, as concepted here, they appear to be constructs of spirituality (though they take a very physical form upon summoning, of course) and as such belong in the Cosmology/Religion section.

From a less logical point of view, if a person unfamiliar with the Santharian Dream, such as a Sorren RPer, is searching for information on the site, where is he/she most likely to look for it?  If he wants info on elves, he automatically clicks the Race link.  If she would like to look up a map of an area, she will go searching around the Places link.  And if he is interested in Demons, the first instinct would be to click Religion - possibly then Races - maybe People if no information is still forthcoming - and the Bestiary would be somewhere further down that list, if at all!

Anyhow, there's my two san's worth.  Anyone else got an opinion on this?  It's not just that the whole concept of demonology disturbs me, although that is indeed a factor, to be honest; but I genuinely believe that for organizational and logical purposes demon listings should remain under Cosmology both in the board and on the site.

With respect,
Bard Judith

I agree with you. The boy just doesn't want to be wrong.... * giggles*

Just came to a realization, however. If a race DOESN'T come from the Tree of Life, then they aren't considered fully sentient? * ponders thought of cerians in the near future...*

I know this one doesn't belong here, I was just tired, but still, I've designed several demons that are more beast than cosmological evil thing. Three of which I remember that do not live in the Netherworld, nor can they be summoned, and aren't really sentient.

And Xarl, he's not supplanting any High Demons. He did destroy a High Demon, yes, but that was a very long time ago, not long after the WoC, when there were people powerful enough to create High Demons.

Just a short note:

I'd see the Mhorashty and Sephet more in cosmological context as well. They're sentient but not "god-like" however they make good allies for higher powers even though they're chaotic demone and do stuff because chaotic demons do this stuff.
