Title: Further Forum Adjustments
Post by: Artimidor Federkiel on 05 March 2007, 04:03:53
I've adjusted some things here on the Forum as I already announced a while ago. Here are the most important things that I have changed:

  • The book icon on the top right of the main site with the text "Developers Forum" now opens the Forum directly at the Forum list, not at the first page.

  • The "news" were completely eliminated from the first page. The first page now is a pure newbie area and called "About this Board", which serves now as a newbie introductory page and contains short summaries of what you'll find in detail in the Help I'm a Newbie threads.

  • The "About this Board" page can now also be accessed through the first link on the newbie menu to the right and through the "I'm New" link in the button row on top. It is important that these links are there for newbies not to miss (so better twice), because we don't open directly with a page where things are explained for newbies now.

  • The title graphic on top was substituted as well. It is larger and has the purpose of this Forum ("World Development") integrated directly in the text. The way it is integrated now should also hopefully look a bit better than previously, where the pics were a) the same as in the Members Moot, b) sat too close to the top, c) were too small and d) had a not very nice lower edge.

  • Clicking on the main forum graphic now refreshes the Forum, just like at the subforums you get the this subforums index.

  • Latest news will from now on be presented directly in the Forum index, not at a seperate intro page. You should see such a new page already in the works right now

@Mina: As you mention that you want to do something like this for the RPG Board - well, there's still a lot of homework to do in this context from the RPG Admin side! The newbie threads are there, but are full with dead links, outdated information, detailed info on ezBoard stuff instead of SMF things etc. so that newbies surely have a rough time to understand what they are supposed to do properly. I've put up a Main Menu Review thread with a checklist in the Admin Forum in order to kickstart it, but the way it looks things are still have remained very fragmentary and the title page still speaks of "RPG Board Migration, Phase III in Progress".

I could help with a few things in order to make things similar to the Dev Board and correct a few pages - but if so, a revision needs to be done in full - and there's quite a bit of effort needed.

Well if needed, I can help with the locating of certain links and the such to make easier for yall. Just trying to make myself useful in some way since its a huge job for the few people. Or I can help in another way if needed.

Yeah, mainly because I procrastinate too much and work quite slowly in any case.

Concerning those ezboard-specific stuff, do you want them removed entirely or converted to being about SMF?

Well just let let me know what I can do to help and tell me exactly what to do for this or that.

*thumbs up*

Great work dear sage. Again, one step closer to perfection ;) It's especially great to have the front page gone and a nice header with announcements again!

@Clurion: Well, this is basically work an admin needs to look through, page by page, get the dead links out, find the replacements - you need the source code for that.

If we want to do it similar to the Dev Board as it is now, we should set up the Newbie intro page, though, with short explanations for each menu item. These short explanations (2-3 sentences for each, see Dev intro page), would still need to be written for example. So there is work that can be done if you have time for that...

@Mina: Concerning ezBoard stuff - well, this depends on what it is. Some thing make sense, others not. E.g. the cookie thing makes sense (it doesn't make sense though to have ezBoard troughout the explanatory text). On the other hand describing how to add a Forum portrait in ezBoard is pretty useless. Certain things could be copied directly through from the revised Dev Forum newbie threads (see here (http://www.santharia.com/dev/index.php/topic,4923.0.html)).

@Gean: Well, as usual I'm not entirely done. The "Show All Unread Posts" link for example at the main index is still something I want to have in at any rate. But we're going step by step, this step was quite important, though, I'd say. If it has awakened Mina as well a bit, the better!

I will be happy to do that once I find time, and look up what I need.

I just need to know what sections I need to right those for and the such, then I will begin when I find some time, after doing the needed research.

Well, just look at the current menu to the left at the RPG Board and you find menu titles like Character Descriptions, FAQs, Descriptions and so on. Most things should be pretty clear - those which are clear can be described already :)

The new header is much better, indeed and the Help I'm a Newbie! section is a great addition.

And here it is - the "Show all unread" link directly on the front page... The text might get a bit long, so I cut it to "All unread", perhaps will replace the other texts as well, but they are located in another file. At any rate this new link works now as intended! :)

[EDIT] Ok, found that as well, so I've cut the texts down even more, guess it looks much better that way.
