On the flavouring issue your brought up, Alysse: Yep, any help to make categorization better would be appreciated, so if you have some time to spare to add entries to other categories as well, then go for it - I'll add them once you're done! :)

It's not always easy here to put everything into the right category (and additional categories that is), but I can only recommend that whenever new entries are made, all the correct categories should be mentioned right from the start at the submission - otherwise entries get placed in only one category.

A belated Happy Birthday Alysse! I sent you two mails on the 30th of August, but both came back as failure delivery. Maybe something is wrong with your e-mail?

Hello Alysse! Grun commented on one of my entries and she suggested I have you look over a grammatical aspect of it. If you would be so kind could you have a look here: Ode to Foiros (http://www.santharia.com/dev/index.php/topic,12122.msg146599/topicseen.html#new)

Hi Alysse,

Any opinions you have on the Sophronian Language (http://www.santharia.com/dev/index.php/topic,12258.0.html) would be most welcome.  I have based it very loosely upon Kuglimz, as they both come pretty directly from the same root (the Mynians).

Thank you!

Alysse, my dear northern sister...can you check my Kaaer beliefs thread (http://www.santharia.com/dev/index.php/topic,12710.msg152526/topicseen.html#new) and brainstorm some suitable name ideas for my Spirit Gods?

Light Father
Night Mother
Earth Brother
Swift Sister
Beastlord (another word for lord? Master?)

I do appreciate your linguistic talents!

Title: Re: Alysse the Likely!
Post by: Alysse the Likely on 08 July 2008, 22:23:26
Okay, let's see...will these do?

Light Father---Suriot (lit: "father [of] light"  from Kuglimz)

Night Mother-- Leirgor(lit: "mother darkness")
Another possibility might be Leirdyve (lit: "mother moon")

Earth Brother--Gynura (lit: "brother [of] plains/land")  or maybe "Gynturg" ("brother [of] stone")

Swift Sister--Bynugh(lit: "sister [of] running/speed") or maybe "Bynapyrl" ("sister [of] water")

Beastlord--Durgho(lit:"leader of animals"

Not all of these are direct from the Kuglimz.  I have tried to adapt them slightly for the Kaaer.

If for whatever reason you don't like or can't use those, or even just want more euphonious sounding words  :) , just let me know.  Those are the most direct translations I can give you.

I have no idea what euphonius means, but I'll use these! They're perfect!  :D

On this map:

http://www.santharia.com/maps/continents/sarvonia_north_1.htm

There is a forest on the upper right corner called the Wood Forest. This needs a new name. Is it primarily a Kuglimz forest? Or can we call it something Kaaer/Orcen?

Title: Re: Alysse the Likely!
Post by: Alysse the Likely on 23 July 2008, 21:46:13
Well, it's a bit further north than the Kuglimz main territory.  I think that it's more likely to be Kaaer territory.  I've always seen the Kuglimz people as not being further north than the Imlith mountains there.  No settlements, for sure; maybe the occasional traveler.  So Ka'aer is fine.

Hey, what if we called it the Palz Forest?  That means "Woods" in Kuglimz  :D

I'll look into it.  Perhaps there's some elven influence too.

Also, can you look into possible Kaaer/Kuglimz names for the stars and for a special artifact called the Mask of the Tree Cousin...(Ret'sur?). It is an artifact supposedly made from the bark of a Pendrowe. More explained in the Themed'lon history. :D

Did I mention how glad I am that you're back?

Aaaaaand Alysse!

I've been thinking of the translation for Kaaer'dar'shin...

Since the Kaaer are known as the First Born or the Hunters or even The First Hunters in their origin myth, can we invent some orcish/Kuglimz wording to reflect that?

I know I am so needy lately...quite unusual except in cases of needing names!  :P

Title: Re: Alysse the Likely!
Post by: Tharoc Wargrider on 24 July 2008, 03:07:50
I've done a little research and come up with this.

Ahn  -  First  (from the Kh'omchr'om forum)
Kal or K'al  -  Born, to be born  (Made this one up!)
uck  -  Suffix denoting any occupation involving combat  (Kh'omchr'om forum)

So, First born would  (or could) be:

Ahn'kal'uck
Ahn'kal Uck
Ahn Kal'uck

Whichever takes your fancy, really!

Title: Re: Alysse the Likely!
Post by: Azhira Styralias on 24 July 2008, 03:31:41
Ohhh I like those! I'll use them. Thank you, Apprentice Tharoc. I shall give you a break from your back breaking labor now.

Along with this, I was also looking for a literal translation of the word "Kaaer'dar'shin"... maybe Kaa'er'dar'shin is a form of really old Kh'omchr'om or Kuglimz words. Maybe words not used anymore? Formal title of something?

The name Kaaer'dar'shin has to have a meaning somehow.

OK, a few suggestions, for what they're worth.

Hunters from the North
Ice savages
Northern Demons
Demons from the Ice
Death from the North

These are just a few off the top of my head, I'm sure theremust be plenty more in there somewhere.

BTW, in the Kh'omchr'om forum, I've just noticed that "Ar" translates as "From", so that's handy, eh?

Title: Re: Alysse the Likely!
Post by: Alysse the Likely on 24 July 2008, 04:17:12
Well, let's see what we can do.  I'm just making this up, these words are not all in the dictionaries

"Carad"--Kuglimz for "born" or "to be born" (made up)

"Ar"--Kh'omchr'om for "from"---this IS an actual word (thanks, Tharoc!)

"Vir" Kuglimz for "one" or "first"--also an actual word

"Jyn"--Kuglimz for "hunt", "to hunt", "hunting" (made up)

Then you could have "Carad'ar'v'jyn"  or "born from [the] First Hunter."  which over the years was twisted into "Kaaer'dar'shin".

What do you think?  Will that etymology work for you, Azhira?

Now for the Pendrowe:

"Ak'ang'ergva'pafalka" would literally translate as "false head of Pafalka" but that is rather unwieldy.  How about "A'ng'erg Pafalka"  for "Mask of the Tree Cousin"?

I've got to go, but see what you think of those and let me know.

Boy, you two are GOOD!

@ Tharoc - I've used your translation for First Born in the Kaaer beliefs entry. Nice touch.

@ Alysse - That etymology works for me! Very nice. I think I'll be revising the main Kaaer entry at some point to integrate all of I've done so far. And, I've use your translation for Mask of the Tree Cousin in the Themed'lon entry.  :D

Did you ever get around to a possible name for the Wood Forest?

Also, in my Wisp entry, I need a name for an Osther-Oc battle hymn. Something violent, yet mystical?

Title: Re: Alysse the Likely!
Post by: Alysse the Likely on 30 July 2008, 02:38:33
Well, shall we call it the Pallon Forest?  That's a sneaky little Easter egg using both the Kuglim and the Elven words for "woods" and it's a nice euphonious name, don't you think?

As for the hymn--that's harder.  Is it an actual written out song to which we have the words, or just a reference?  If the latter, can I make it something that celebrates Choan of Orc, the famous female orc warlord of the Osther Oc?

Title: Re: Alysse the Likely!
Post by: Azhira Styralias on 30 July 2008, 02:51:32
Choan of Orc, that would be perfect. It's just a reference.  :)

And I am worried that Pallon sounds too much like Paelelon forest (http://www.santharia.com/places/paelelon.htm) in the south...  :undecided:

Isn't it though?  (chortles wickedly)

As for the hymn--"Choan'ash'uon'kh'al'on'uck"  could be the full title, called "Choan'ash" for short.  It translates roughly to "Choan the noble Shaman-Warrior", or "Choan the Worthy".  Like her namesake, Choan will be receiving mystical directions/visions from "the gods".  She will be training as a shaman before she becomes a warlord.

Will that be okay?

Alysse and Tharoc!!!

Please see my Kalta'Goor entry (http://www.santharia.com/dev/index.php/topic,12789.0.html) at your earliest convenience. I took some liberties and invented some previously unknown orc history, places and even invented an extinct orcen language from which the Kalta'Goor and Karma'Goor names came from. I want to make sure this is ok with you two...

Title: Re: Alysse the Likely!
Post by: Tharoc Wargrider on 25 August 2008, 01:50:07
For my part, Az, I have no problems with this at all. You have done a sterling job of creating this whole entry, and I love the idea of a lost Orcen language.
I have also pondered on the possibility of having some form of written Orcen language, even going so far as to draw a few basic symbols which could represent letters, but I couldn't get past thinking that a direct 'translation' of our alphabet is a bit of a cheat. Would they, instead, have symbols which represented groups of letters? Or perhaps, like the Eastern cultures of RL, symbols which represented whole words? I think this is something which needs further investigation at a later date.

As for the entry itself, I love it. The two 'mini-stories' which you included as diary-style entries are especially good.

Thanks, Tharoc for the kind words!

Ok, I have another one for you two to peek at...

Heaths of Eph'denn (http://www.santharia.com/dev/index.php/topic,12777.0.html)

Alysse - Make sure I have my flora/fauna accurate. I threw alot in these heaths...

Tharoc - Check my orc stuff. I made up some more history, and explained Hell'wrung a little bit, so please keep me consistent with what you have in mind for your orc boys.

Thanks!

Ok boss. I'll just finish mucking out the stables, then I've the laundry to do, and the beds to make, so I should get to it sometime tonight, hopefully before I have to prepare supper for Mistress Alysse and your good self.

I hope you like your food HOT, Alysse, because orcen cuisine consists mostly of adding Kragghi root...

I also hope Serf Wargrider washes his hands after mucking out the stables and before preparing supper....

Alysse!

I just mentioned your Darkmyst Whelp in the Mists entry...BAD AZHIRA FOR FORGETTING!!

Anyway, I propose using them as possible mounts for the Ghostlings, or at least creatures to be hunted for food and/or clothing. Yes?

Fine by me.  Certainly their fur would be very warm, and the poop would come in handy for defensive use or hunting--they could stun something with it and then cut the animal's throat before it recovers, sort of thing.

I also responded in the Osthemangar thread.

Hi Alysse,

I have made a proposal regarding the Kuglimz (http://www.santharia.com/dev/index.php/topic,15015.msg191767.html#msg191767) in the Tribal forum.

Thought you'd like to know ... I don't want to step on toes ... as my shoes are rather heavy and dangerous these days.
