Has the connotation of 'sentience' or 'living'. Animals and some plants can be described with the GH syllable.) Post by: Alysse the Likely on 21 September 2005, 11:47:00 Wow, you've been busy!
Erian must be thrilled to have all this help. Though languages aren't my strong point, you seem to have a talent for imagination and technical consistency in development which will be very useful to those of us doing linguistics. (BTW, I don't know if I said this or not, so, thanks for all the help and the work you did on the Orcen language. ![]() Alysse the Likely Title: Re: Trollish - new Troll vocabulary here! Post by: Erian Melor on 22 September 2005, 14:37:00 Awesome!
![]() ![]() Could you create trullish words for "banished" and "shaman"? The word for banished would be something that would convey the shame of a Troll living without his kindred, and it would be a word that Trolls rarely spoke. The word for shaman should be something to convey the Trolls' awe of the shaman. The beliefs section in the revision should clarify exactly what I mean about the Trolls' view on banished Trolls and shamans. The sun falls from the evening sky, this life I cannot abide. I looked it over and came up with the following words: KHAMONEKHA = Banished (it is spoken as a long wail, prolonging the A's) KLOHMAGHI = Shaman (lit. great listener) Is this anywhere near what you wanted? Title: Re: Trollish - new Troll vocabulary here! Post by: Erian Melor on 22 September 2005, 15:51:00 Oh yeah, they're both great.

Title: Re: Trollish - new Troll vocabulary here! Post by: Erian Melor on 14 October 2005, 07:40:00 Actually, Trolls don't use weapons and are not warlike. The only thing that could be said to resemble weapons are the trees and boulders that they will sometimes hurl. They find their claws to be sufficient for taking down prey (any attacks on human settlements are just that: trolls hunting) and a club would only hinder them as they ran (they run on all fours like wolves).
Thank you, Norkin, for that comment. I just realized that the entry on trolls mentions Cave Trolls trading hides for orcish weaponry, and this does not fit into the way trolls hunt. I'll change it so the trolls trade for precious stones instead (only the troll entry mentions them trading for orcish weaponry). Basically, the concept of a weapon is foreign to them. They may see other races wielding them but would not understand the manner in which they are made. Also, they would consider the weapons to be weak since they cannot pierce a trollish hide. Quote: It doesn't mention weapons, but it does say it's not even sure they trade. It also mention helping in raids. This doesn't seem to fit with the not warlike thing. And now that I think of it, there's a short mention of trolls in the Ban-Yuk Ogres entry as well, in case you missed it: Quote: Marving Cerambit ~ Do not tease my Warg, because you are crunchy and tasteful Need help with your new Character? ~ How to make a new Character ~ Role Playing Tutorial ~ About Magic ~ Measures and Weights ~ Elf Age Calculator ~ ~ FAQ ~ Restrictions, Elven Aging, Titles & Magic Level ~ The World of Caelereth ~ Title: Re: Trollish - new Troll vocabulary here! Post by: Erian Melor on 14 October 2005, 11:35:00 This comment also does not belong here.
![]() ![]() Cave Trolls do live in the caves that the Ban-Yuk entry mentions, and it would be possible for an ogre to take a cave from a smaller band. (The entry on trolls states that bands can have up to thirty members, but there are smaller bands as well.) Cave Trolls are also the smallest of the Troll tribes and are not that much bigger than an ogre. The sun falls from the evening sky, this life I cannot abide. Post by: Mirmec Rethindor on 11 December 2006, 02:23:39 i looked in the compedium for the troll language translation (Trullish) dictionary like they have in the Styrash to Tharian one, but i cant find a listing outside of the Troll Racial listing. So the October 2005 vocabulary is the last listing we have??
Reason why i'm wondering is since some tribes of trolls live in caves, and they seem to be primarily visual creatures combined of Earth and Fire but not able in many cases to verbalize this Inner Sight, i was wondering if Trolls had possibly crude horns or other musical instruments to communicate in the higher elevations (Snow Trolls, Mountain Trolls) to send messages between clans? I doubt they would have sophisticated music, for example you woudn't find a troll bard or troll Songmaster, but do you think it possible there are like Troll Drums?? At the bottom of the Troll Racial entry in the Compedium is another short vocabulary, but again no mention of music. Anyway this was just an aside, i stumbled upon the Tree of Life origin myth cause i was comparing it to the concept of the Coor'hem Ember Tree etc.. and that is how i found myself in the troll entry. Title: Re: Trollish - new Troll vocabulary here! I was about to say, you still have over 150 entries to read (if you still dont take my focusing-on-one-area advice) Title: Re: Trollish - new Troll vocabulary here! Post by: Artimidor Federkiel on 11 December 2006, 02:47:13 Yep, that's the Trollish status quo. Will stay that way for now.
As Decipher already hinted at: We cannot do everything, so a focussing is key - for experienced developers and newbies. It's good to see that you are interested in practically everything, Landre, but there is a chance that you won't get to anything development-wise if you go into all directions, problems, inconsistencies etc. at once. We've had that before with enthusiastic newbies, so I know what I speak of. Title: Re: Trollish - new Troll vocabulary here! Post by: Mirmec Rethindor on 11 December 2006, 03:15:55 i'm not going in all directions, i'm posting every now and then here in the forum as a break from the table i'm making of all nybelmar entries of places and races to figure out where all the minerals/ores are in Nybelmar.
if you want to see it so far (it wont upload right, but you can see what i'm doing its here below) if you can figure out a way later for me to upload it from excel we are gonna use it as a tool to help us see what areas of Nybelmar have been covered and what is still gaping open in regards to place names, and races, and try to add some mineral/ore entries. so it is far from complete. I'm guessing it will have around 2000 or more Nybelmar terms before i'm done based on the pace i'm going of 400 terms per ten pages searched. the plot is to look up every single Nybelmar entry in the compedium, and then do the same search function for the forum, and then go back and compare and have Nybelmar people help me fill in the blanks as i told you in the igms i could not get the screen to work with the compedium open and me on the forum, i cant minimize the compedium (you said just use the single frame view for the forum which is what i do now, i have the compedium up in a parallel window), so the hours i am spending there dont show up on my santharian dream time log. I was in the compedium for about five hours last night ;p again this is in table forum in excel so it will look all mixed up in this cut and past thread entry, i'm just showing you what i'm working on. the rest of Nybelmar people think it will be helpful as well. anyway i did make one submission called Green Fields its in the library section, its about a battle in Nybelmar PLACE NAME excerpt QUADRANT **MINERAL/RESOURCE** RACE Aca (suffix, prefix) high, holy Aca-Santerra eastern Nybelmar including islands stretching into Maren Barkath, silver currency shipping, granite, marble, silver Aca-Wyr legend has it Barkhas magically transported these islands over a two year period Aeruillin continent north of Nyblemar N/A Aestera tribal forerunner of the Krean Aetryam Sea water body between Nybelmar and Sarvonia Affaenath Forest home of the Pheranrhim, elves who later founded Fullwanooth Affaenath Woods literally Autumn Forest, ancient Elven land of Nybelmar before War of the Chosen Allfaenath Gopag gopag eggs hatch in a couple of hours gopag shell Gopag Altyr port, former capital of the High Kingdom of Aca-Santerra before it was moved to Delvynnar Amanlins Kiingerim heads of building Dwarves Amber Halls Ehebion monument to battle with the Korweynites, started by Theodunn Amir of Tersal successor to Zigorath, Amir of Tersal unite three kingdoms of Aca-Santerra Amphibious Gopag live on the north shores of Nybelmar N gopag shell Gopag Amuneth (suffix) korweynite term of the Sun Angus symbolized by a seagull in the Aca-Santerra coat of arms Anis-Anpagan southeastern peninsula of Nybelmar bordering Maren Amuneth Anpagan shores had world renowned docks of Anis-Anpagan Anpangan Gopag found in north and south of the Anpangan peninsula gopag shell Gopag AnulOrn water sense of the Plain dwarves Arath tribal forerunner to the Krath Arkhaeon Archives a building in the Ehebion capitol Arkhaeon Guild mysterious organization in the Murmillion tribes of Nybelmar armourers common trade amongst the Coor'hem ar'pun grass a type of plant eaten by Kiangi Artakar Peninsula one of the halves left behind by the destruction of Menemronn's fortress, where Aca-Santerra is now Ashlands home of the chyraskiss, half orc and half elf Chyraskiss Ashlands former home of the Deep Dwarves Dwarves Autum Forest Fallaerion Affaenath, home of the Hilldwarves Balkerim the Plainsdwarves Barkhas, High God of Aca-Santerra most venerated deity in Aca-Santerra. Post by: Decipher Ziron on 11 December 2006, 04:06:09 But what do you hope to accomplish from compiling all of the minerals/ores? Do you need them all? And from what I can see you have listed more then places, but things like beasts and even prefixes. I dont see where you are going with this, and would appreciate it if you would explain why you are monotously reading through every entry which has a reference to Nybelmar and recording what I seems to be a lengthy incoherent rows of gibberish. I dont want to sound rude or arrogant but I the two compilations I have done have been based on things I already knew and things that I was asked to do by my unoffical mentor which I knew would not be extremely time consuming, but yours seem to lack purpose.
A said above, please explain your intentions, Decipher Ziron Title: Re: Trollish - new Troll vocabulary here! Post by: Mirmec Rethindor on 11 December 2006, 04:48:48 i have explained my intentions. i am making it for a study guide, to give me an overview on the places of Nybelmar and the ores and minerals associated with those places. If you folk want to use it fine, if not fine. But its a study guide i'm working on for my own benefit. If you dont want it in the Nybelmar thread thats fine with me. But as much as people keep saying they want an overview, this table of Nybelmar terms will give us a great overview of what is known and what is not known about Nybelmar.
Most world building involves tons of different kind of maps. Because they are far far behind in their map making projects, we would have to wait years for a mineral/ore guide to the lands of Nybelmar. Once you have the minerals and ore, and you know the geography and the major towns and races, then the next step is to get the detailed topography sort of like what they have on the Manthria map now. So not just one big long blob of the Crystalwoods, but a closer in view of the Crystalwoods showing what is used where etc.. or Orcal or Aca-Santerra. Back when i worked on my stories, i have four maps for the same area. Minerals/ores/resources, weather patterns, elevations and a city map. With those four sorts of maps you can do a lot with continuity in stories. Plus as you can see from that table there are some conflcting entries already out there. It will help us (or me) to see the redundancies and the clustering of the areas of Nybelmar covered and the areas of Nybelmar not covered. That way when i go to start making entries, i will have a great outline easily accessible of what has been covered and what needs to be covered. Otherwise without a study guide you would have to start from scratch every single time, and not know what has been done and what hasnt been done. The study guide will be continually updated by myself, as all cheat sheets study guides are. As i learn more, more will be added to it. And if folk want to help on it, they are more than welcome to. But on the flipside if they already have a mnemonic system for remembering things about Nybelmar, then they can keep their cheat sheet system, and i will use my system. Its just whatever works for you. I myself am finding the whole project really really fun. And then as i say i will go back to the taped togethr map of Koldar's version of Nybelmar and start filling in the ores/resources, and shade in the places where the various races of people are and where they overlap, etc... really alot can be done with a table like this. its a good tool. Post by: Artimidor Federkiel on 27 September 2009, 17:51:34 Well, as nobody is actually working on trolls anyway at the moment, you could as well continue with adding to improving to the trollish language vocabulay. Especially as Trultrul isn't a very complex language, and the words seem to fit to what we have, that should be fine.
The only problem I see is that you seem to have your own ideas on trollish belief, which to my knowledge isn't in any way part of the trollish belief concept you find on the site in the Troll entry. If you work on trollish vocabulary you should stay consistent with what we already have. Title: Re: Trollish - new Troll vocabulary here! Post by: wesley on 15 December 2009, 14:23:12 Maby

Maby Bilbo heard Mutton and really they were saying MUTTA which would make sence because bad food tastes bad.

Title: Re: Trollish - new Troll vocabulary here! Post by: ishmaelion on 23 April 2012, 02:13:55 @ Harvey: I'll try to look at your list in the coming days! It is nice to see some new Troll words in this thread! I will also comment on some words which do not seem to follow the Trollish essence, as Art already mentioned. I'll get back to you soon on that!
EDIT: hahaha, I just realised that the post by Harver was written three years ago... I'll edit it anyway and update my list. EDITEDIT: Am I talking to myself now? If so, good job Ishy  Title: Re: Trollish - new Troll vocabulary here! Post by: Deklitch Hardin on 25 April 2012, 11:10:09 Yes you are, and good job Ishy! :)

I find it hard to believe I've been around for 3 years Title: Re: Trollish - new Troll vocabulary here! Post by: Artimidor Federkiel on 26 April 2012, 03:23:51 Yeah, some people have a tendency to disappear after a few posts - and when the master dealing with a certain issue is away not much will happen with it... Anyway, would be good to have a confirmed list of vocabulary which is ok with you to be added to the Troll race entry (http://www.santharia.com/races/troll.htm). If we manage to get some more we might even move it from the main entry to the language section the way with have it with Thergerim Taal and Styr嫳h. :)
Title: Re: Trollish - new Troll vocabulary here! Post by: ishmaelion on 26 April 2012, 03:27:25 Well, let's get cracking then! I'll work on the list as soon as possible, nice to try pronouncing new TRULTRUL words again :)
Title: Re: Trollish - new Troll vocabulary here! Post by: ishmaelion on 04 May 2012, 04:17:13 Well, this might take somewhat longer than anticipated, as the list by Harver forces me to clarify more aspects of TRULTRUL then I had envisioned in my first list. I'll think on it some more and post a more thorough word-list PLUS description of the language and its role in Troll society! (If that is okay)
Title: Re: Trollish - new Troll vocabulary here! Post by: Artimidor Federkiel on 04 May 2012, 04:45:15 Of course it is, Ishmaelion, even better! :)
Title: Re: Trollish - new Troll vocabulary here! Post by: ishmaelion on 09 May 2012, 02:02:20 I put a description of the Trollish language as I imagined it in a new thread so that this one can remain purely based on vocabulary.
I am looking forward to your ideas and comments! Title: Re: Trollish - new Troll vocabulary here! Post by: Val O就eil on 29 May 2012, 16:17:23 I am looking to name the hills in which the Snow Trolls live on the northernmost mainland island of Cyhalloi in TRULTRUL, but I don't really know where to start with this crazy language. As it is right now, the hills are called Rolling Snows, but since the trolls are the only ones living there, I figure they should be the ones naming the place.
Vesk suggested to me IGMESHKLOIGH, which I guess would be "snow mountain", but the hills aren't really mountains. They're just really big hills that shift around like sand dunes in the desert. Any suggestions that you may have for me would be greatly appreciated. Also, is there a TRULTRUL word for land / island? Thankyou bunches! Title: Re: Trollish - new Troll vocabulary here! Title: Re: Trollish - new Troll vocabulary here! Post by: Val O就eil on 30 May 2012, 07:31:45 I look forward to seeing what you come up with, Ishmaelion. :)
Title: Re: Trollish - new Troll vocabulary here! Post by: ishmaelion on 30 May 2012, 08:05:11 Okay Val! I am working on more vocab for TRULTRUL these days and your question gave me another opportunity to think of more evil-sounding words
What do you think of this: making the trollish distinction between plain - mountain - water apparant in lexical form and then extrapolate the other types of land-phenomena (i.e. hils, islands, canyons, etc.) based on that. Plain, field = SLOGH Mountain = KLOIGH Water = SLOSH Lake, river = SLOSHSLOSH Hill = KLOIGHSNI 'little mountain' Snowy hill = KLOIGHSNIMESH with plural KLOIGHKLOIGHSNIMESH Island = SLOGHSLOSH 'watery plain' Canyon = SLOGHKRAH 'broken plain' So your answer would be KLOIGHKLOIGHSNIMESH ('little white mountains') for the placename, which is, I admit, pretty long. But then again, Trolls don't really deal in place-names so they would be very simple about what they mean without paying attention to language esthetics or ease. Agree? P.s. I really need to write a grammar part on Trollish vocabulary, there really is a system there as I am discovering. More will follow! Title: Re: Trollish - new Troll vocabulary here! Post by: Val O就eil on 31 May 2012, 07:59:59 KLOIGHKLOIGHSNIMESH is odd for a place name, and admittedly a little long. But I've seen names that are almost just as long, in R'unor example: Hylph'xan'ian'kroi Mountains is pretty long.
I'm not sure what I expected-... Actually, I'm pretty sure this exactly what I expected. Thank you for your time, Ishmaelion. Wait, if KLOIGHSNI is "little mountain" or "hill", and to make something plural you repeat it, then wouldn't a plural of it be KLOIGHSNIKLOIGHSNIMESH? SLOGHSLOSH... Hehehe. Oddly, it does sound a lot like Folasch when spoken aloud. Hm... Sloghslosh.... Would "KLOIGHSLOSH" be waterfall then? Title: Re: Trollish - new Troll vocabulary here! Post by: Azhira Styralias on 31 May 2012, 22:03:55 Why not have a shortened version of the mountains that would be known by humans? Surely the geography is known by other names than solely TRULTRUL. I can tell you many examples of orcen names shortened or bastardized by the human Kuglimz or Kaaer.
It might be easier for future entries to refer to the shortened/human name rather than a huge TRULTRUL name Title: Re: Trollish - new Troll vocabulary here! Post by: Mina on 31 May 2012, 22:38:15 As Vesk mentioned in the Ghereghut thread, the Snow Trolls probably speak a different language. If TRULTRUL names are being applied to the Snow Trolls, they are most likely constructed by researchers based on what they know of TRULTRUL, rather than the names the Snow Trolls actually use. It's not too implausible, considering that trolls in general aren't very approachable.
Or, if you want the name to actually be something the Snow Trolls use, there's always the option of just making something up. After all, their language hasn't been described yet, so there's probably no danger of contradicting existing material. Quote Why not have a shortened version of the mountains that would be known by humans? Surely the geography is known by other names than solely TRULTRUL. I can tell you many examples of orcen names shortened or bastardized by the human Kuglimz or Kaaer. This is also a very good idea. I'm pretty sure this is something that happens in real life too. It would also impose fewer restrictions on anyone who might want to develop the Snow Troll's language in the future, since differences could be explained away as humans being unable to pronounce the trollish name properly. Title: Re: Trollish - new Troll vocabulary here! Post by: Val O就eil on 31 May 2012, 23:52:20 I'll probably still have it called the Rolling Snows by the humans of the area. But I wanted a name for it by the people that actually live there. And I'm actually considering renaming the island itself something TRULTRUL sounding, since I will no longer have the Sabuin people there. Snishlosh or some kind of perversion of Slogslosh and their word for snow.
I don't really have time to get too far into this at the moment, as I have to leave for work. I'll post more later. :) Title: Re: Trollish - new Troll vocabulary here! Post by: Val O就eil on 05 June 2012, 07:52:18 I understand what you mean, Azhira, and I appreciate and will apply your suggestion. Though the point isn't to make it easy, it's to have the proper names as named in the world by the inhabitants. So that if I do decide on a bastardization of the name by the humans, I can base the perversion off of the actual name instead of solely going off of the name-trend that the race/tribe renaming it has going.
The main reason I want to use TRULTRUL to name these hills, and maybe a few other areas on that particular island, is because they are the only sentient inhabitants living there that aren't of myth/lore. So, since they mainly live on that island, I figure that they would have names for different general areas of it to communicate to each other that- "Hey, lets go troll around all trolly like in the Rolling Hills today and see what we can nom-nom." I mean, I assume that trolls have conversations with each other just like any other sentient being does, even if they're not very deep or meaningful ones. :P I'm going to start with a list of words I am going to use as a base, already supplied by Ishmaelion in this thread. After which, I am going to list the tharian name I currently have for the place, coupled with my suggestions for a the Troll's place-name and the bastardization of of said name. GHEREGH = Cave, home, house, dwelling IGHMESH = Snow (lit. white stone) HAMESH = Ice, quartz (literally, 'hard white') SLOGH = Plain, field SLOSH = Water SLOSHSLOSH = Lake, river SLOGHSLOSH = Island, 'watery plain' SNI = Small GH = Being (untranslatable literally. Has the connotation of 'sentience' or 'living'. Animals and some plants can be described with the GH syllable.) KLOIGH = Mountain KLOIGHSNI = Hill SLOGHKRAH = Canyon Folasch IGHMESHGHEREGHSLOGHSLOSH. Snowy Home Island. IGHMESH- Just go with MESH GHEREGH... REGH SLOGH... SLOSH... name suggestions: MESHREGH SLOGSH REGHMESH GREGHMESH GHEREGHSLOGSH SLOGRESH Rolling Snows KLOIGHKLOIGHSNIMESH. Little White Mountains. Snowy Hills. name suggestions MESHGH or GHMESH - Living snow Alright. That's all I got. :/ I've been thinking and working on this for the past few days now and that's all I've come up with.... Ishmaelion, I noticed in your list of words that MOSH means Animals. But then MOSHMOSH means Food. But at the bottom it says that to make a word a plural you repeat it. So MOSHMOSH would mean Animals and Food? Title: Re: Trollish - new Troll vocabulary here!
