On wayward path I heard that tune
It sparkled jocously like a rune.
Words floated liltingly beyond the dune
With voice much sweeter than any bruin.

And turned a corner beyond sand astrewn
To see the singer linger as a silent moon.
A glance was all my heart could cocoon
For there stood no mortal: ballyhoo’n.

Twas a sprite some say or ghostly duneduan
With starlight which shone just right a through’n.
Before my senses could rightly attune
The sight glimmered dark and maroon.

A memory no more, it was last June
On a wayward path I heard that tune.

i tried to do something like that last winter Druadan with all the entries of Nybelmar, but basically a project like that would intersect with many developers and regions. so i'm guessing they would say it is better if you just choose one type of boat in one region to try to make an entry about it. especially since much of the known lands that are on the map still are not devleoped, your "summary" would limit future developers.

as far as my Nybelmar database i left it at abut 750 entries, i learned alot but really, who needs a database when we have the compedium??

you know i tried that out, or tried to try it out and never could get it to accept my commands.

i think a more fun way to do it, instead of having people type commands, is to use some sort of mechanism Artimidor like you do with your map overlays. So say they would have a "magic guide book" in their hands, that they had to attain by fulfilling some sort of newbie quest like choosing what sort of character they want to be, and based on the character type, they get the appropriate "magic guidebook" for their profession.

then each page  in the guide book woudl just start out looking blank, and as they point to things on the page, they would gradually reveal themselves, sort of like you do with your map overlays when people point to different countries and it shows the various colros and things.

and of course the things they point to would be things about Santharia, but in order to learn new things in their guidebook they would have to "travel/move to another room/place" in order to have the conditions favorable for the book to reveal a little bit more.

why this is a more fun approach is it takes you out of the typed command database where if someone misspells, 'take book" as "take books" nothing woudl come up, but if they were just pointing with their mouse to a page in their book, how could they misspell that??

its just an idea.
6  Santharian World Development / The Santharian Bestiary / Re: The Gibbering Jackal of Eyelia on: 15 April 2007, 10:39:51
Drasil i suggest you read up on jackals they are found on three continents in a variety of environments ((asia, africa and europe). I think jackal is fine. In fact if you read closely about Jackals you will realize they are a generic name for many canine type creatures and since the whole impetus of your first point was hyenas were not feline but canine -- i chose a more generic sort of animal that was canine.

Anyway consider can people not use the word flower because we dont allow earthly flower words in Santharia? no we allow flowers, and fish and all sorts of terran words for creatures and plants. In fact, i bet we could look at a whole bunch of compedium entries where terran animal names were used to describe the creatures. here are just a few i find right off the bat:

Baneg Cattle
Havach Ox
Strata Milking Cow
Avenor Cat
 Barn Cat
 Brendolian Cat
 Puvtar Cat
 Strata Cat
 Wilderon Cat
 Ximax Cat
 Hunting Hound, Eophyr.
 Hunting Hound, Zeiphyr.
 Jhomcholan Diver, Dog
 Kaal Bloodhound
 Kardión Hound
 Rimrunner Terrier, Dog
Azhorhrian Horse
Sarvonian Heavy Horse
 Cuncu Sheep
 Dor'iyn Sheep
 Goat, Cragok
 Goat, Domestic
 Goat, Ho'loch
 Goat, Inja
 Goat, Milch
 Sawis Sheep

all of these are accepted Compedium entries on animals. and they use terran terms to describe what they are. Sheeps, goats, horses, whatnot

now if you want to change the rules of the Compedium and have all those entries struck out from the Compedium then i may go along with you there Drasil. But if you want to arbitrarily change a rule for your personal choice that is a different matter.

the whole idea is to have uniform accepted animals that follow the template, of which i have followed.

However if you want to go into all the Goat entries and now called them curly horned Garrumbs, i mean that is fine. But you would have to get that accepted by the Compedium editor. After all Garrumbs are a made up name. Which is what you are suggesting. We must have made up names not terran names for animals.

but as it stands that is not common practice in the Compedium for naming animals. What i have done combine a terran term with a defining adjective is common way for animals to be designated in the Bestiary section of the Compedium.

This is a great idea! I love games especially dice games. I think though you need more detail, i don't know if they have a games template. Something that might add to it is maybe a mention of notable games, since it does involve money, possibly famous people or nobility have won or lost kingdoms over a this "simple" game of stakes? Also maybe there are certain towns that specialize in this game, certain type of con men (weighted dice) really you open the door to alot of possibilities. Maybe you could mention regional variants in the game like you know some people play gin rummy and some people play rummy and some people play michigan rummy, and then you could discuss how the various types are different and why some people favor one type over the other?? So in effect you just invented a whole sport!

Good point Bard Judith. They would be overrunning everything if they had that powerful a poison. Ok, i will rework it and tone down the poison, to affect smaller animals possibly rodent sized or less? And that would open up a uses category i guess as you say people could collect the poison sacs possible for apothecary/assassin type poison? Rare but not unattainable. Maybe one exposure to the poison would have flu like effects on a person, so we get the same warding affect of intruders. So when you run into them and get attacked you get sick, you just don't die.

Ok, i will get that revision in by tomorrow. its going to storm here today i think, so not much computer usage later on today   ;)
9  Santharian World Development / The Santharian Bestiary / Re: The Gibbering Jackal of Eyelia on: 14 April 2007, 10:51:39
i'm not sure how you can say its not a jackal. it is a variety of jackal. you didnt like hyena, it was a variety of hyena. i don't want to make up a word, i mean sure i could call it a rare Fleed, or an uncommon Maramat, or a miniature Lanmag but those are empty words. Remember this was a cross breed in the Royal Bestiary. Just as a Gryphon of which Eyelia was famous for was parts of different animals, this is part Jackal and part something else. It has canine elements in it, and scavenger elements in it

So i'm staying with Jackal. A cross breed Jackal called the Gibbering Jackal. Now you have other comments?

Anyway look at the Moss Lizard entry, that thing is part lizard and part water beetle, and part silverfish, so at what point could you or could you not apply such a name? Even the pit worm entry was part worm, no one asked for us to call the pit worm a pit ulumin or a pit hostarerin?? Why? Cause the worm characteristics would have been lost. The Moss Lizard characteristics would be lost. So i would have to disagree with your line of thought in this respect.
10  Santharian World Development / The Santharian Bestiary / Re: Moss Lizard on: 14 April 2007, 05:32:13
Well it reads okay once you realize you are writing in first person. I think though that you should try to write the first three paragraphs not in first person and see how it looks to you because when writing in first person, we have to wonder who the person is, and what their opinions are. You draw attention to that by writing:

"Their scaly skin shimmers in such an intense Uderza blue that observers get watery eyes along with headaches when contemplating the reptile's beauty. "

So i think if you are going to stay in first person you would have to say because your eyes get watery and have headaches, otherwise it just comes across as a personal opinion.

As you go along you slip more back into the regular omniscient view.

Still it is obvious you have spent time around the pond and water bugs, so you know your stuff.

Anyway keep up the good work, i can see the imagery of what you are describing very well, though i wondered a few things like what color was its eyes, how long was its tail. These sorts of things a person writing in first person wouldnt know cause the creature is moving so fast, but to an objective observer, you would know. So you just have to decide which approach you want to use and stick with it through the whole piece.

One little thing is you say the tail is used like a rudder in the water, but you also say the back feet are used as a rudder in the water. So maybe if you just leave the tail for propulsion from the S movement, then use the feet for the rudder that may be better? But that is why i was wondering how long the tail was in proportion to the rest of the body.

Oh and watch your capital letters on names of places like Sarvonia. Still it is obvious you have put alot of hard work into this piece, so you have accomplished much.
11  Santharian World Development / The Santharian Bestiary / Re: The Gibbering Jackal of Eyelia on: 14 April 2007, 05:04:37
ok the creature is renamed a jackal, i hope judy that is enough like a raccoon creature, and i fixed the canine references, and actually read up on a the genus of canidae on wiki to get a better idea of what i was trying to describe.

i'm open to any more things you folk need changed i think i incorporated everyone's suggestions in there this time.
12  Santharian World Development / The Santharian Bestiary / Re: The Gibbering Hyena of Eyelia on: 13 April 2007, 07:55:34
ok gotcha Drasil. computer up and working, games are working, so now i can go back to editing between wait times in my games like normal. maybe i have revision in by tonight, not sure. We'll see.
13  Santharian World Development / The Santharian Bestiary / Re: The Gibbering Hyena of Eyelia on: 13 April 2007, 01:52:13
ok i'll leave it a hyena, and work on my description better.

our internet is coming and going today though so i doubt i'm gonna get to post a revision until tomorrow. i can barely play my computer games like travian, so i'm horribly behind and this is groceries day.

will work on it some though tonight because Word is not online, its on the computer.
14  Santharian World Development / The Santharian Bestiary / Re: The Gibbering Hyena of Eyelia on: 12 April 2007, 08:20:12
these are great things everyone has picked up on. Especially a hyena not being a cat. Ok so i will probably change it to a cougar/panther sort as i know in the lowcountry of SC they have legendary black panthers in the palmetto grass for real world comparison. The reason why they are only on that particular stretch of river is that they escaped from the Royal Bestiary in the great earthquake and migrated northward, but i didnt include that link in the territory section only in the overview, so my mistake. And you folk did pick up on the fact the entry is repetitive. I actually wrote the last section first, and then filled in the characteristics. So i guess i should have left it at the top first and then did the characteristics? So that is a very rough first draft, needs alot more work, i'll try to have an improved version in there by tomorrow night hopefully, especially the part about the walkthrough of the entire life cycle and replacing of the matriarch.

Ok, so folk can continue to comment of course, and i'll just work to incorporate those comments as i go along.

actually there are alot of OCR software that probably could scan most of it into Word for you. Just go down to your local copy shop and see what they charge to scan per page?

or you could ask Artimidor if he could take your selection out and with his computer knowledge translate it back into Word for you. I had a similair problem like what you are describing several years ago and wen the scanning route and it worked out ok.
