Mourning Rose
Categorization: Flowers

Basic Overview:
The mourning rose, also known as the ‘storm rose’ or the ‘grey rose’ is a rare species of rose, mostly grey in colour, found exclusively in the Mithral Mountains in southern Sarvonia. The rose gets its name from the fact that most of the time, the rose remains as a bud, drooping towards the ground- reminiscent of a mourner bowing their heads in sorrow. The plant has both incredible restorative and deadly properties (depending on when it is harvested-see below), and is highly prized for medicinal purposes and also poisons.

The mourning rose stands at about a fore in height. Its 9 petals (5 on the exterior, 4 on the interior) are deep grey in colour with the exception of a white streak along the petals rim. The stem is a dull green in colour and is covered in small thorns which, while non-lethal to humans, elves, dwarves etc. paralyzes the victim. In the centre of the petals lies 3 pistils and it is these that are sought after most.

The rose is only found in the Mithral Mountains of southern Sarvonia, often high up in the peaks of the mountains where it can be exposed to the winds. The rose has remained largely unknown to the local Dwarves as they are more concerned with things such as their mines of mithril and other metals than plants.

Depending on when the pistils are collected, nectar can be extracted which can be used as either a deadly poison, or a useful medicine capable of curing most illnesses. While the rose remains as a bud, the pistils are a dull grey in colour and are deadly to consume, however, in the short space of time that the rose flowers, the pistils develop and turn to a deeper grey with a white tip. When harvested when completely developed the pistils can be used medicinally. In order to make the medicine/poison, one must first collect the pistils. They then must be boiled in water in order to extract the nectar-like substance within. Once boiled, the substance will either be thin and watery (poison) or thick (medical). This nectar can then be used for whatever purpose was intended.

The mourning rose spends most of its days as a bud and flowers only to reproduce. Reproduction occurs during fierce winds or storms; the rose will flower during this time and release its pistils, relying on the winds to carry its pistils away. If one wishes to acquire the rose for medicinal purposes, one must act fast before the pistils are scattered in the wind. After reproduction, the rose will wither and die within 7-9 days. Whilst still in its bud, the rose is thought to be able to survive indefinitely.

Hi there, Ive been browsing through your great material for a while now and have decided to join the Dream! I am interested in world developing and even have a few ideas for the Herbarium/Beastiary.

I live in Australia and love fantasy, esp. stuff by Tolkien and Feist (GRRM is good too- albeit a bit disturbing) and enjoy writing fantasy- although my writing skills aren't that good.....yet- and I hope that this site and it's community can help me improve.

Cheers, M. Grey.
