2  Organization and General Discussions / Non-Santharian Stuff: Life, the Universe & Everything / WANTED: Beta readers / comic fantasy on: 10 April 2018, 20:31:03
Hello fellow writers/readers!

I'm in the last third of my comic fantasy novel (80.000 words so far in 16 chapters) and the time has come to open the project for further beta readers with a penchant for comic fantasy (people who like to read guys like Terry Pratchett, Douglas Adams, Tom Holt, Christopher Moore, or fun stuff in general).

Requirements. You should be able to handle hilarity and absurdity and be prepared for the world to end. If anyone would like to have a look how the apocalypse transpires, be my guest. The idea would be to give chapters out one by one, and to get some feedback in return - feel free to point out whatever you have in mind regarding the text. You can opt out anytime though in case the text isn't for you.

Goodies. You get the text, which I consider a good thing. The novel also comes with a map, a professional cover illustration, and chapter illustrations are in the works - all of them will be provided for betas. If you make it through and someone dares to publish the thing, you'll get a mention. Check it out - the world only ends once.

Introduction. In every proper fantasy world serious troubles are bound to happen – big, cataclysmic ones. Now, the peculiar Princedom of Zarrafanda is hardly a whole world, but it will get its share when everything goes downhill. Then again, the knight in shining armor will save the day, defeat some half- or three-third-baked villain and get the girl, right? Well, there’s competition: Try a has-been archmage for a change, teaming up with a kleptomaniac lovelorn halfling, a cheeky dwarf, a hulk of a barbarian for the rough stuff, plus a sensuous elf and a healer on her way to find herself. These guys and gals will take care of things – if someone would only let them!

An epic journey awaits, complete with heroes, monsters and gods, and everything in between and behind things: like raining fish, barking trees, icebergs and their tips, and buildings on excursion. And it all began with that dratted apocalypse dropping by for evening tea...

If you're interested, let me know via webmaster@santharia.com! cool Thanks in advance for your interest.

Hello there, Noksz! wave

Well, as you can see from the current activity, I guess it's safe to say that you're, yes indeed, too late. If there are no comments to stuff that's posted, it's difficult to get anything on site. And as that's been the status quo for quite a while, that's pretty much what you can expect in the future.
4  Organization and General Discussions / Announcements and Web Design / Site Update 10-10-2016 on: 10 October 2016, 18:21:55
Next update was just uploaded.

Also includes the so far here yet unpublished fairy tale "A Kind of Magic". cool
5  Santharian World Development / People of the World of Caelereth / Re: The Santhran Lysmarin Hammerfeld on: 27 September 2016, 18:51:05
Hello again, Felsid!

Another great entry! :D There are a couple of things you should look into (see below), but the content is great with lots of twists and turns and character development as it should be... Here's another aura +1 for you.

Things that should be looked into are as follows:

- Overview: Bascially the Overview should always condense the key information in the first couple of sentences, so that someone looking for information should instantly find it. The Overview can still elaborate further, but it shouldn't provide many detail. The current Overview is a bit long-winded, and one won't find the information one seeks instantly. E.g. the name Lysmarin Hammerfeld, that he's an illegimate child, and the dates when he lived and reigned should all be mentioned right away, and what he was mainly famous for. Also that we're talking about a ruler of Santharia here. Also: Where is Herstengrad located? Which Santharian Province? Newbie readers will have difficulties placing this person. Anything that contributes towards that is appreciated. So I'd suggest a bit of rearrangement there. Currently the first paragraph is a bit of a historic excursion.

- Graveness: Male and female form is identical (see Ranks entry), so it would be Graven Mariama of Thyslan.

- Biography: The biography part should be written in past tense (see e.g. the Lysarian entrym this should be the template, though I know there's the one or the other exception to this rule). The history table on the other hand usually is present tense.

Starting at "In the year 261 a.S., Lysmarin’s first son Jaerin is born." you switch to present tense, if only briefly, but then do so more often throughout the following paragraphs ("where the trail soon grows cold", "In 275 a.S., the Santhranna Rena, a much beloved figure to the commonfolk of Santhala and the patron mother of orphans across Sanguia, dies under mysterious circumstances" etc.). Check them in detail to correct the tenses!

- We also alway have a section "Importance", which should be added to this entry as well.

Couple of things to fix:

- period of greatl hardship --> great

- beside his thronel --> beside his throne

- left for New- Santhala  --> left for New-Santhala

- in a serious of political and commercial disputes --> series (I assume)

- Many of these noblemen were also enemies of the Santhros, who felt gilted or ignored by the aging Santhros. --> Santhran (two times!)

- Caeron’s diminishing mental health soon lead to --> led

Short note: Basically we have as standard sections of Herbarium entries Overview, Appearance, Territory and Reproduction. So if you can still add a sentence or two at Territory and Reproduction, that would make things perfect.

Another excellent entry, Felsid, which I prepared right away :) Love the concept and especially the Myth/Lore part on this one too, which is funny and creative, and a wonderful addition to the whole area too! Excellent! Only thing I had to change is Low Fores to Lower Fores, but other than that great job!  grin

Aura +1!

Ok, fixed that little things for you and prepared the entry now for next update!  thumbup
9  Santharian World Development / The Santharian Herbarium / Re: Lightmoss on: 08 September 2016, 03:13:27
A very complete entry now, Felsid, and great additions to round off the entry with nice bits of Myth/Lore... Guess the entry now truly serves as a prime example of how to do it - you're really hitting your stride there! Great work all around!  thumbup

Oh, and don't forget to fix Theregrim  --> Thergerim ;) Guess you got used to the wrong spelling by now... lol

Tale: That Fiend of Mine
Link: Read it in the Santharian Library
Size: 12 pages

Introduction: This is a story about dreams, nightmares and others. About monsters and people afraid of monsters, about hopes and fears, about darkness descending on us, and about confronting what threatens to devour us. It's a humorous tale too. And a compassionate one. And somewhat bizarre to boot. And a thought-provoking one, providing some food for thought - quite literally...
11  Santharian World Development / The Santharian Herbarium / Re: Lightmoss on: 05 September 2016, 15:36:24
Nice to hear from you again, Seeker! Hope things are fine there over the Big Pond... wave

@Felsid: You still working on this? You seemed to have filled out all the sections by now, so...

Oh, and BTW: Don't forget to post when you're done with the entry, Felsid! If you only edit the entry it won't show up as something new to others in the post history at the right side of the Forum!
13  Organization and General Discussions / Announcements and Web Design / Re: Search feature troubles on: 03 September 2016, 22:22:23
Ok folks - we've got an updated search feature...  grin

Please make sure to refresh the site when the mainframe is displayed, so that you don't get an old cached version of the frame. Because the search button now points to another page (it's a PHP script instead a CGI). Anyway, it basically looks exactly the same as before, though with some improvements e.g. auto completion, so if you type you get a couple of suggestions to pick from if you wait a bit (like on Google). There might be a few things that still need adjusting, e.g. the page file name, like voldar.htm is also included in these auto suggestions, which makes little sense. And you might find pages that are not meant to be in the index (e.g. parts of frames). Anyway, the feature is there - adjustments will follow later.

And now: Happy searching! :D
14  Organization and General Discussions / Discussions, Development Ideas & Proposals / Re: New-Santhala on: 02 September 2016, 02:52:44
*haha* Wouldn't you want to do a moderately big entry before you make a really big one, Felsid? Are you sure you'll get your words straight for New-Santhala? ;)

Well, at any rate: I guess there were plans years ago that e.g. Grunok wanted to do it, and probably someone else later, but basically as they're not around: I don't have a problem if you want to tackle it. Would require quite a bit of research though, there are lots of references on the site about this one. So I don't have any objections about it, but it will last quite a while to get that one right, I assume...  :D
15  Santharian World Development / The Santharian Library / Santharian Horror Stories: Uninvited on: 02 September 2016, 02:44:27
Tale: Uninvited
Link: Read it in the Santharian Library
Size: 22 pages

Introduction: It is past midnight. Darkness reigns as you awake in the study, an open book in front of you, a glass of blood red wine next to it. A candle is quietly melting away. Suddenly you hear ominous sounds reverberating through the hallway, and the next moment another unnerving discovery convinces you that an intruder must have entered. Chances are he's still around - very, very close by, ready to strike. And thus the dangerous nocturnal search begins... Careful, stranger! This might turn out as a chase with your life at stake!

Additional Note: The short story of "Uninvited" is based on the interactive Santhworld module bearing the same name. The story is also a "Thief III" fan project, marrying the world of "Thief" with Santharia. Pictures used in this module and story are screenshots from the game by Eidos Interactive.
