1606  Organization and General Discussions / Announcements and Web Design / Re: Mistakes, typos, misspellings - post here! on: 29 May 2009, 14:00:31
We also spell it colour here in Australia. This site uses the England/British version of the spelling, not the US version. If it was a site based in the US, we'd all have to conform to those spellings, but it isn't. Whether we like it or not, it has been decided that we are following British spellings of such words. I actually didn't come here to argue spelling variations of words ... but rather to bring up a typo I saw in the Kyranian men entry :D

In the weapons section of that entry, it says the following This unique weapon was crafted by the middle Thromgolin brother, Sengren, in ca. 9550 b.S. and obviously was named after him but in the history section, it says The Scions of Thromgolin II: Senren "Ren" Thromgolin ... that Senren should be Sengren, I am certain, as the evidence suggests they are both referring to the same person.

Happy Birthday Art!
1608  Santharian World Development / Races, Tribes and Clans / Re: Kyranian Military on: 28 May 2009, 00:16:06
From the information I have on them, I'd think just foot units would use the Sengren. I gather from the information sent to me by Capher that it was designed for use by Kyranians on foot. As noble children were trained in its use during the time of the Kyranian kingdom, I would suspect that there would be units in their infantry armed with the Sengren. grin
1609  Santharian World Development / Races, Tribes and Clans / Re: Kyranian Military on: 27 May 2009, 11:59:16
I notice that you've just mentioned the Sengren axe once ... within the Knight's section ... and only mentioned that the knights don't use it as it is a specialist weapon. Would you consider putting into the Kyranian Military entry the divisions that actually use the Sengren?

Thank you all for your thoughts, concerns, advice, encouragement etc :)

I'll keep it bubbling away ... and see if I can make it a lot less sketchy :)

Ok ... I know this is going to be weird ... but it is me that is typing it ... so what else do you expect?

Part of my training as a teacher was in the developmental stages of children. Part of that was that for very very young children anything that they can't see doesn't exist ... eg hiding something from their view and then revealing it producing the look of excitement on their faces ... games of peak a boo also exciting them and so forth.

Anyway, I'm just kind of wondering whether that could become the basis of the philosophical beliefs/mythology/religion of one of the less developed races/tribes or some kind of cult/religious group/philosophical body here in Santharia.

Something along the lines of ...

What we see is real, what we don't see is not real, thus we need to see all members of our group at all times, or else they will cease to be real for a period of time at least. Once we see them again, they stop being not real and instead become real once more. It is always an amazing thing when members that were not real become real once more. Worthy of praise and joy. Trees, plants, animals, shelters, waters, the sky, the stars ... all are real, become not real, and then real once more. When they return to being real, it is also worthy of praise and joy, though the members of our group hold the greatest joy return from being not real to being real.

TBC

Anyway ... I do have to run for the time being, but it was something that came to me, and I was worried if I didn't put it down, I'd forget it :D ... comments, thoughts etc anyone?
1614  Santharian World Development / History of Caelereth / Re: Santharian History: 0 to 100 a.S. on: 24 May 2009, 14:23:23
Ok ... I'm coming into this with an extremely limited (virtually non-existent) knowledge of the history of Santharia ... thought that might be an interesting perspective on it for you, Artimodor.

I'm going to be asking lots of questions here ... so apologies for that ... let's do the questions in red and suggested corrections in green.

ROYAL LINE OF THARANIAN KINGS

10 b.S.-27 I presume this  is a.S. Why do you include the years b.S. if the history covers the period 0 - 100 a.S.? - King Santhros "the Wise" (King of Charity)/Queen Ahreng Cara'Jeshanneh
(Sons: Laenthris, Thaelnoric; Daughter: Shaelriga)

Santhros (45 b.S.-27 a.S.) is considered by most to be the most influential and beloved figures in Santharian history, giving his name to the kingdom he helped to unite after the terrible devastation of the Third Sarvonia War. His bravery, kindness, and humility has echoed through history, and many poets and writers still hail them what do they hail in their works? King Santhros or his bravery, kindness and humility? If the former, shouldn't it be 'hail him', if the latter, or even Santhros and Ahreng, 'hail them' would be fine? in their works, while historians alike sing his praises. No other figure in Santharian history has done so much to bring peace to the Santharian kingdom, to unite all the races and tribes in harmony.

It's a historical fact that the coronation of Santhros to the Tharanian throne Do people get coronated to the throne? is the direct continuation to the until this point still semi-official Sarvonian Alliance between the leaders of all three main races of the southern Sarvonian continent, humans, elves and dwarves. Eventually Santhros should succeed in convincing the southern kingdoms and tribes of various races to unite with Tharania to form a kingdom unparalleled in history that would last for millenia to come.

27-77 - King Laenthris "the Firm"/Queen Phelossa
(Son: Mantheros; Daughters: Valdda, Naelýnn, Weyfra, Ýssa, Carrena)

King Laenthris Salazath (14 b.S.-77 a.S.), son and heir of Santhros the Wise, solidifies the work his father has begun and is highly respected for that. He is called "the Firm" due to his direct and unwavering approach to tackle issues and represents for many the perfect continuation of the massive project that a United Kingdom of Santharia needs. He is a warrantor of peace and security.

Laenthris' personal life is overshadowed by tragedy, however, his first wife, Veldosla of Carmalad, is unable to give birth to a male heir, and is deemed "cursed" by the public eye. While Veldosla eventually ends up leaving the king and going into a monastery, the new Queen Phelossa gives birth to a healthy son, Mantheros. But what seems to secure the line of Santhros will only lead to a fierce battle for the Santharian throne.

80-105 - King Mantheros/Queen Ilee'ala
(Daughters: Sirthala, Na'ahena)

Victorious after the deadly confrontation with his cousin Staranos, Mantheros - after three years of uncertainty - emerges as the rightful heir to the Santharian throne. Though in many ways weaker than his predecessors, Mantheros - especially due to his experiences of the succession war - still has the support of the majority of Santharians. Same question as earlier for you ... if the period is for 0 - 100 a.S. why include years after the centuries years?

TIMELINE

0 - Santhros crowned as King of the United Kingdom of Santharia
It is a historical fact that the coronation of Santhros to the Santharian throne is the direct continuation to the strictly confidental Sarvonian Alliance between the leaders of all three main races of the southern Sarvonian continent, humans, elves and dwarves. This alliance already exists for several years in order to hinder the endeavour of the dark elven lord, the Móch'rónn, Saban Blackcloak, who descended the Hèckranian volcano in order to topple the Earthen Titan from his throne in the depths of the dungeon Hegedorn. So, is it the Earthen Titan that has a throne in the depths of the dungeon? or does Saban have a throne down there?

With the creation of the Santharian kingdom an essential counterpart is formed in southern Sarvonia to the barbarians and the orcish cultures developing in the Northlands. But not only this: The new kingdom also brings peace to the many disputes among the races which still reign the lands. Therefore it is indeed justified that all historical incidents taking place after Santhros' ascension to the throne are measured after the new Santharian Calendar.

Inner-Santharian Trade Flourishes under the new Ruler
The unified government of all Southern Sarvonian human tribes brings many changes and also a good deal of scepticism to the inhabitants of the newly formed kingdom. Yet the new king makes sure that the progress he says he stands for becomes apparent to his people as soon as possible.

Santhros immediately makes sure that new trading relations are established within the kingdom, that tribes and regions are revived with new impulses. Committees to discuss new cooperations and reorganization between races and regions produce first remarkable results. After only a few months scepticism takes the back seat and prospects and hopes dominate large parts of Santharia.

The Halflings join Santharia
The halflings of all tribes Would 'All the tribes of halflings' be better here? agree to become part of the Santharian alliance along with elves, dwarves, and men. Though the alliance proves to be shaky at first, the halfling shires are eventually able to return to a peaceful state, and begin to experience a new time of great growth.

Stratania becomes part of the United Kingdom of Santharia
The Santharian King Santhros grants the city of Strata more funds to regain power. Restoration and buildings continue but at slow speed due to the large demolishing activities that have to be performed first. Many of the old buildings are unrepairably damaged by the teeth of time and are pulled down.

1 - Defeat of a renegade Stratanian Baron
While the Stratanians joined the United Kingdom, they still have to deal with a renegade Stratanian Baron in the Uderza region, who didn't recognize Stratanian government and even does so even less with a unified Santharia. I presume the name of this Baron is one of those things you are saying will be coming later?

Already in the first year of his reign Santhros starts a military campaign led by the Stratanians and backed up up by mainly Avennorian and Serphelorian troops, successfully ousting and imprisoning the rogue baron. The mere amount of troops showing up to represent the king's determination is argument enough to get rid of the baron with practically no bloodshed at all - thus a huge bonus is earned for the king in the southern parts of the kingdom.

5 - Thaehavos declared Free Town and renamed to "Bardavos"
Bardavos, the former Thaehavos, with the ascension of Santhros the Wise to the Santharian throne is officially declared a "Free Town of Bards" and thus renamed to Bardavos.

9 - Petition to Santhros Frees Marduran
The Port town Marduran is freed from the often tyrannical rule of its Lord Enforcers by Santhros' decree after he hears of the town’s unique situation. Having outwardly become quite different from the lawless people they had been 800 years ago, the people of Marduran become great supporters of the Santharian province of Manthria and Santhros. In a town meeting after the jeering eviction of the final Lord Enforcer, the town's first communal action is to knock down the imprisoning walls. This is done with great enthusiasm, although it wanes fairly quickly as more essential tasks beckon. No section of the wall is left untouched, but great parts of it are left standing and degrade naturally over time or are, in later years, incorporated into new buildings.

14 - Death of the First Wife of the Santharian Prince Laenthris
A great tragedy befalls the royal household: Merella, the first wife of the Santharian King Santhros, Laenthris Salazath, dies during childbirth. The long awaited heir also cannot be saved. Did Merella marry both King Santhros and Prince Laenthris, are Santhros and Laenthris one and the same or was it meant to be Santhros or Laenthris in both parts?

21 - Second Marriage of the Santharian Prince Laenthris to Veldosla of Carmalad
After seven years of grieving over the death of his wife and son, Laenthris finally marries thge daughter of a highly respected Caltharian count, Veldosla of Carmalad. While during that time mainly seen as a political marriage in order to strengthen ties with other tribes, Veldosla would give birth to no less than five children within the next ten years. Yet Laenthris long-awaited male heir is not among them - all their children are girls.

27 - Death of the Santharian King Santhros the Wise
The Santharian King Santhros the Wise, also known as the "King of Charity", dies peacefully at the age of 72 in is sleep. A highly influential figure, Santhros not only made history in Southern Sarvonia with the unification of several kingdoms, but has also always been in high esteem among his people, regardless of tribe, helping to unite and to come together.

At Santhros' funeral thousands of people stream into the capital of Quia'antá (the later Santhala), among them elven, dwarven and hobbit delegations, there renewing their vows to continue following the ideals of the deceased king.

Laenthris follows his Father on the Santharian Throne
Laenthris Salazath, firstborn, yet still childless heir of Santhros becomes King of the United Kingdom of Santharia. He is aged 41 when he claims the throne.

33 - Birth of Staranos, Son of the Santharian Prince Thaelnoric
The secondborn Prince of Santharia, Thaelnoric, becomes father of a son he names Staranos.

46 - The "Curse" of the Santharian Queen Veldosla
Twentyfive years after their marriage and after having given birth to five daughters in the first ten year, Princess Veldosla bears another child to her husband and King Laenthris Salazath - it is a male heir, yet it is born sick. While the healers are hopeful and the celebrations are already started, the life of the young Erthis ends already at his second night.

Queen Veldosla, a loving, yet frail woman, is ashamed of her inability to provide a male heir to her husband. She hears the "Cursed!" shouts of the populace when the death of young Erthis is announced to end the premature festivities and is unable to cope with them. She leaves the court, entering a White Knights monastery on the Isle of Hope, far away from her former husband, making way for another woman. Three years later she dies. Her death is barely noticed in the realm's capital.

The Santharian King Laenthris marries the Erpheronian Duchess Phelossa
Only a few weeks after his first wife Veldosla left King Laenthris to conclude her life in a monastery, he marries again, this time a still very young Erpheronian duchess, Phelossa of Weyring.

56 - Kar-ii Turya Archmage of the Black Tower
The Kasumarii Turya ascends to the position of Archmage of the Black Tower, Kasumarii establish further relations with Ximax. Kasumarii also now known to most Sarvonian magi, knowledge spreads.

59 - The Oltgyr Vradvo (Mitharim Hundred Year Pilgrimage)
Every hundred years or so, starting from the first Santharian decades the Mitharim dwarves make a pilgrimage to the island Denilou to pay homage to the statue of Brok Strongarm. This usually takes place in a year ending with 9 (such as 1509, 1619) in the dwarven month of Anurilos (Sapphire, the fourth month, which is associated with water). A human ship is retained for this voyage, which begins at the port of Ciosa, hugs the shore of Doranthakar, and then cuts east-nor’east across the open waters of the Adanian Sea for the island of Denilou. Since we know that the densely-boned dwarves generally abhor water in larger quantities than their bathpools, and are very poor swimmers, we can perhaps appreciate the significance of this pilgrimage to the Mitharim.

60 - Birth of Mantheros, the long-awaited Heir to the Santharian Throne
Fourteen years after Laenthris' marriage to Phelossa and with fears mounting that she might actually be barren, Queen Phelossa finally gives birth to a healthy male child, Mantheros.

Big celebrations ensue, as the line of Santhros seems to be finally secured with a male heir. This seems to guarantee security not only for the royal family, but also for the populace, who wants continuity with the path chosen by Santhros the Wise and followed by his son Laenthris. Queen Phelossa is named "the Lucky", yet her luck would soon be over.

The Santharian Queen Phelossa is crippled in an Accident
Only a few months after giving birth to her son Mantheros, the carriage Queen Phelossa's, her staff and her son were travelling in overturns for unknown reasons. While the driver and a maid die, baby Mantheros survives miraculously. The Queen survives as well, but is badly hurt and remains crippled for the rest of her life.

Instantly suspicions arise as to whether the incident was accidental or not. Protection for the child is stepped up drastically. Rumour has it meanwhile that the grandson of Santhros' second son Thaelnoric, the battletrained Staranos, has ambitions to claim the throne for himself should the time arrive, and that the accident might have been instigated by him.

70 - The Introduction of the Santharian Calendar
Following the works of the famous elven astronomer Mowi Farseer, the Santharian Calendar is introduced in the kingdom. It is the product of several years of research and scholarly work of experts done in Ciosa at the Starcharts Astrendum, the Astrologists Center of Santharia till this very day. The Quaelhoirhim elf Mowi Farseer (originally called Mór'weí Kýn'vaí in Styrásh, 95 b.S.-111 a.S.) accumulates data and oberservations from all civilized races of the kingdom in order to construct the new time measuring scheme. It needs to be emphasized however that the new calendar is to a great degree a detailed update on the Cournanian Calendar elaborated by the astronomer, philosopher and alchemist Tandelrah Cournan (1701-1636 b.S.).

77-80 THE FIRST SANTHARIAN WAR OF SUCCESSION (77-80)
With the death of King Laenthris a bitter war of succession to conquer the Santharin throne erupts between Mantheros, Laenthris's son, and his cousin Staranos. It would last three years until the conflict is settled, deadly consquences included.

77 - The Declaration of Carmalad
In a Declaration of Carmalad the Avennorians, Serphelorians and Caltharians vow to ignore Staranos' ambitions and proclaim Mantheros their king. Uncertainty spreads over the southern continent. Many people oppose Mantheros, fearing that he is too weak to support his claim without the necessary military force needed to back it up.

78 - Attempts of Interference of the Elven League in the Santharian War of Succession
The League, a secret elven-based organization which believes that only under human rule a perfect society reflecting the Dream of their High Goddess Avá can be achieved, face a terrible situation. The League cannot let the dynasty of the wise king die. Staranos is considered too cruel and the kingdom would be ravaged by another great war. The League's efforts now have to focus on supporting what they see as the one Santharian leader that could live up to their ideals - Mantheros. To do that they have to manifest their existence.

Cumragane, descendant of the first human leader of the League Allengard and descendant of the Centoraurian kings, sends Hecuran, the so-called "Elven Lion", on a quest to join the elves and form an army with every warrior available. This army, a total force of about thousand men, is placed at Mantheros' disposal. Cumragane then heads to Helcrah, his homeland.

Cumragane imprisoned
Upon arriving in Milkengrad Cumragane reveals himself as descendant of the Sostrian kings and leader of the League. He urges the Helcrani to fight for Mantheros and finds many supporters there, but nobody actually joins a campaign with him, because - with the absence of a Santharian King - their loyalty belongs only to the Anactar of Milkengrad.

Cumragane recognizes Anactar Semgon’s authority and places himself at his disposal in the war against Staranos' tyranny. In the Great Hall, the building where the Fratric Assembly takes place, the two of them are confronted as to be heard by every citizen.

But claiming that Mantheros' would stand no chance against Staranos' military prowess, Anactar Semgon orders Cumragane's capture. He and his accompanying men are thrown into prison.

79 - Mantheros retreats towards the Hèckra Volcano
As the usurper's army marches north through Caltharian lands to conquer the eastern harbours, which are supporting his enemy's supply lines, the Centoraurians with their army march east to block Mantheros' retreat, while the Kyranians advance from the south. Mantheros cannot afford a battle before his Goltherrhim reinforments arrive, so he retreats southwest towards the Hèckra volcano. Outnumbered and encircled, Mantheros is in deep trouble.

Cumragane is freed and turns the Tide
While imprisoned by the Anactar, Cumragane's words still echo among the populace. He told them that the Helcrani should not to abandon their king twice, as they did with king Curgan in 617 b.S., and strong opposition forms and manifests itself in Milkengrad. Cumragane is freed from his prison after an uprising in the city.

As the army is away, every Helcrani who is left behind takes some kind of weapon and marches east. Actually this is an army of reserves and armed non-combatants, like women and youths. However, a wave of enthusiasm is spreading on their way, Cumragane takes the lead. Staranos' veil of fear was shattered.

The End of the Santharian War of Succession: The Fulfillment of Tacunija's Curse
The Helcrani choose to abandon Anactar Semgon and fight and die - if neccessary - for their righteous king. As when Cumragane arrives at the battlefield the main body of the Helcran army turns to Mantheros' side and along with them the entire army group. Staranos is deprived of his whole army (except his personal guard), as nobody wants to serve him anymore. Staranos is trapped.

Along with the supporting Anactar Semgon Staranos manages to escape to the Hèckra. At that very moment the volcano that has been resting for centuries erupts and burns him with his remaining supporters. Cumragane and many of his men are burned too as they chase the tyrant in hairbreadth distance.

This ends Cumragane's life and fulfills Tacunija's Curse. From that day on a congealed lava formation landmark that resembles a person is said to represent the Helcrani hero Cumragane. With the fulfillment of the curse Helcrani from now on are redeemed from their crime. No more will they fight with each other. Now it is them who saved the day. Cumragane is honoured by his men and his nephew, who manages to escape Hèckra’s wrath, is assigned new Anactar of the city.

Official Disbandment of the League
Officially the League is disbanded after this battle, but it might still exist in another form. It is restricted to a very limited number of members, who until today look after Santharia and the wellfare of its people. Nothing is known of the current status of the League or the course of their struggle against the Pure and Coór.

80 - Mantheros Salazath crowned to Santharian King
Ending the Santharian War of Succession, Mantheros is finally crowned to Santharian King. While some irritation still lingers regarding the royal family in parts of the country, most people are happy that peace finally returns to the vast realm.

82 - The Santharian King Mantheros marries the Eyelian Ilee'ala
A high-ranking Eyelian beauty becomes the consort of King Mantheros.

83 - The Santharian Queen Ilee'ala gives birth to two twin daughters
Again the line of Santhros has difficulties with male heirs: Queen Ilee'ala gives birth to the twin daughters Na'ahena (an Eyelian name, paying tribute to the mother) and Sirthala (an Erpheronian name, as is her father's).

98 - The Tethinrhim Academy of Archery
With the continued success of the Santharian Kingdom, the fortified outpost begins to lose its sense of purpose and has become a burden to the Tethinrhim government. As an act of good faith towards his sovereign, the Rónn decrees that the outpost be re-fitted as an Academy to be opened to all members of the Alliance regardless of race.

ca. 100 - "Kasumarii" becomes a Santharian Watchword
The Kasumarii are a watchword in much of Santharia as the elite assassins of the shadows. Moonblades pierce Santharian weaponsmiths' awareness, and they start churning out imitations. No substitute for the real thing, though. What do you mean by watchword?

105 - Death of the Santharian King Mantheros
Aged only 45 Mantheros dies, having suffered heavily under the heaves breathing disease. A severe case of pneumonia is diagnosed after an excursion in the Santharian north, and Mantheros dies on his stay in the City of Death, Nyermersys. He leaves no male heir, and games of intrigue would soon dominate the royal court. Would they know the term pneumonia at this time? It isn't too 'modern' is it?

Just my thoughts for you, Artimodor. Most of it made sense to me, where it didn't, I asked you questions about it.

I hope what I've said is of help to you :)
1615  Santharian World Development / Magic in the Lands of Caelereth / Star Trek - TNG Episode "Thine Own Self" on: 24 May 2009, 13:37:45
I know it is weird to talk about Star Trek in here, considering Star Trek is Sci Fi and all ... but this episode of TNG was actually dealing with a medieval society where everything was believe to be made up of four elements ... fire, water, rock and sky.

An example was shown ... that of a piece of wood. The teacher said ... the most clear element in wood was rock ... which was why it was solid. When you lit it ... the fire element was revealed. The smoke given off by the burning wood was the sky element in the wood. One of the kids asked about the water element. The teacher explained that sometimes one or more of the elements was deeply buried in objects and wasn't always evident ... but all four elements were there in each object.

I just thought it was an interesting episode, given the fire/earth/water/air schools of magic in Santharia. :D

A dumb question probably ... but with Garret having her entry as both the original post and the second reply in this thread, which of those two do I comment on?

I'm thinking probably the first ... but just wanted to check.

Enjoy your holiday, Garret.

I've been told that Ireland is a great place to visit ... and that you haven't lived until you've had a pint of Guinness and kissed the blarney stone. Enjoy the countries, enjoy the couches and enjoy the experiences!
1619  Santharian World Development / The Santharian Library / Re: Nermeran children's game on: 24 May 2009, 07:30:26
Not EXACTLY a children's song ... more an advertising song sung by the singers amongst the Black Butterfly Rovers ... primarily to children. My thought is that the Rovers send their musicians and singers out to towns, encouraging people, especially children, to come and watch their show ...

Hey, there! Hoop-la! The Rovers are in town!
Have you seen the actors?  Have you seen the clown?
Have you seen the dancers leap without a single care?
Have you seen the gymnasts balance high up in the air?
Have you seen the juggler toss knives both up and down?
Hoop-la! Hoop-la! the Rovers are in town!

Hey, there! Hoop-la! We're the Rovers troupe!
Hear musicians and singers performing in a group.
See the half-tamed ogre with the green and orange fan,
The beardless dwarven maiden and the half-orc half-man.
See the friendly elf shooting targets through a hoop.
Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey! We're the Rovers troupe!

and then the version sung by those who are not as happy to see the Black Butterfly Rovers :D

Danger! Danger! the Rovers are in town!
Have you seen my money pouch that I just put down?
Have you seen my amulet, my pendant or my ring?
Have you seen the troubles, that the Rovers with them bring?
Have you seen anything that was not nailed down?
Danger! Danger! the Rovers are in town!

If you don't know the original ... it was The Circus by CJ Dennis ... a song I remember from my time at school ... we must have been learning about the circus at the time ... so I'd guess Year 2 or Year 3 or maybe Year 4 which puts it ... far too long ago for my liking :D
1620  Santharian World Development / The Santharian Library / Re: Nermeran children's game on: 23 May 2009, 06:05:13
Oh, your biggest worry is not Tharoc...

The dwarves would like a word with you.  Several, though they are all likely to be short ones.
Oh, look, what a massive axe that one is carrying!  And they really don't like having their racial name spelt incorrectly,
even in Tharian.... not that you are going to have time to fix it....

EEEEEEEEEEK!

Thanks for pointing that out, Bard ... I'll try to fix that up ... I've got longer legs than dwarves, I think ... so I might be able to run faster than them.
