1  Santharian World Development / Magic in the Lands of Caelereth / Re: Magic for Beginners: The Essence of the Ximaxian System on: 10 September 2006, 02:02:13
Well, I was more wondering about this guide when it is complete as personally the concept of magic. Honestly Shaw my ISP wiped out the origional AoC RPG Info site so all the tools and guides I had were gone and I did not have a backup. I actually had to rewrite the EAC from scatch and bits of code I found laying around my file system. Fortunately I had a final version of the SMC.

So really I am trying to rebuild content and magic is just not a subject I could write a guide on myself.

I was wondering if when finished I could publish this guide on AoC RPG Info when it is complete. AoC RPG Info being a resource site directed at roleplaying in Adventures of Cealereth.

AMDs are great chips. They seem to have a more efficiant interal structure than Pentiums, in terms of operations. A memory starved AMD will still outperform a Pentium of the same clockspeed fro this reason.

A note on AMDs is you should have at least a 350Watt PSU, and a good Clean heatsink applies you a CLEAN core, for optimal thermal transfer.

My AMD rig, runs 2 optical drives (Had 3 in at one point.), 1 harddrive, 5 fans, my ATI Readon 9800 Pro and the 1.33Ghz TBird. I have yet to have power problems. And my cooling is half decent though I have some work to do on that. The video card and hardrive are causing some serious restriction. My case is large (21" Antec Var Series SX1000), but there is only about a few inches between them.

Explaining the math is and how it all relates together is kind what has me stuck. I am hoping I can grab some of Gars time, as he has done some working on this with me, and see if something can't come out of that.

Otherwise I will have to try to figure it out on my own.

I am not sure if I can be done my part of the Elven Aging Entry by Sunday. This week has been really hard with a lot of rush production going through. I have been soo tired I have not been eating right, and given my weight, that is a VARY bad thing. Needless to say I am a little low on energy so I will do what I can.

This is also delayed by a technical issues with the calculator. They are now fixed. If anyone finds an issue with the Elven Aging Calculator, please contact me with the details of the problem.

Wren how is your part going? Not meaning to rush you as I mentioned above my part may be delayed, just wondering how you are doing with it. BTW, when you send it make sure the subject is one easily distinguishable from the S Load of spam I have been recieving lately, and actually for quite a while.

FYI, IRC information is as follows:

Server: irc.sorcery.net
Channel: #santharia

Not sure if I mentioned this, but this should be included to.

Well Talia, you and Koldar are safe until you join a new story and the story mod want to see some more background. The CCMs, and admins are, and will not hunt down old characters and make them conform. Infact as long as you don't loose you CD you are most likely going to pass. If a player has to rewrite their CD on the other hand because you lost it then I feel it far that these player conform to the current standards.

Truth is all we want is a little background on the character, perhaps it does not need to be much, but something should be there. For example you say you know roughly what your character did when she was found, and you could write a short paragraph. This may be enough, but leaving history totaly optional is not excepable IMO.

BTW, Arti, I think I am on the last version of the Human to Elven Age Calculator, at least untill another playable tribe is developed. The page its self is not yet complete. I still have to rewrite the information in elven aging and add it, and Gar tells me there are teplates and things on the site I could download to give it a more santharian look, so I will see what I can't jack out of them.

I would not expect an Elven to Human calculator any time soon. It is providing some unique mathimatical and coding chalanges. The math is easy enough, but I am only just starting to learn Java Script, so working the math into the code is the hard part. As well as making sure the script can not be abused.

If I can get both working, and If they are compatable I may combine the two into one master calculator.

Arti, I would like vary much for you to host it, and I will send you the page when done. I still need to rewrite the information on Elven Aging. I will be posting drafts perhaps in a new thread within this forum to make sure what I write is at least understandable to the majority. I have a hard time explaining what I know. :|

Right now it is just boring Back text on a white background, but I would guess you could jazz it up when you get your hands on it.

I may yet write an Elven to Human age converter as well, as a player writing an elven character will need to be aware of what human age their character is equivilent to, in order to know thier skill set limits. However ensuring this can only be used correctly will be more difficault the the Human to Elven age converter. Also it would require me to manualy re-evaluate the formulas. Perhaps at a later time I will merge the two, or add additional funcionality to each. We will just have to see.

Anyway, Arti expect to see at least a new thread on this in the coming weeks. I will also try to keep giving Gar a gental push towards finisheing the minimum requirments.

Talia, about history being optional. I agree, not everything may need to be included in the history, but it should not be totaly optional. Characters should not be played as knowing more than is presented in the RPG itself, unless otherwise agreed apon by the players in question, if the information is presented in the characters CD or not.

For example Ephin StormCast and Voltaire Terenos two characters currently under developement have agreed from the developement that their characters will have a history, and so in RPing they can play with prior knowlage of each other. However if I joined the same Story, I could not regardless of how much detail their histories have.

Bottem line here is, not want others to know so they can't use it is not an excuse. It is bad RPing to play your character as if you already know a character yours just met, and it is the other player's and Story Mods resonciblity to deal with this if it comes up.

Gar is still working on the Minimum Requirements. He has been working lots and not much time for it.

In a bid to take some guess work out of Elven Aging, I have developed a Javascript based caculater that Gar will be hosting on his site for now. For now it can only be used for full elves of a single tribe. I may consider adding additional support later.

I hope to add a whole RPG specific entry to the page as well, and in so doing be able to remove this thread from the Character Creation Board in favor of linking to the page, as I feel having information like this in a separate window would be more useful to a player writing their character.

I will also be spearheading the effort of clean up withing the Character Creation forum, but I want ot see how the minimum requirements turn out and discuss what is still of use and what is not, and how we should organize it with the other Mods and Admins before I starting drastic changes.

I want to say, I have no problem with lessoning the requirements. I have a problem with the system proposed, I do not think it addresses the root issue we have with CD requirements right now. The root issue is too many new players leaving in the Character Creation stage. This has two reasons.

First too many rules, the players see the rules and decide it looks like to much work where it really isn't. I have managed to snach back a few of these, but I can't and won't hunt down every one of these players. Rules MUST be replaced with a brief and simple guide that does not read like a rule book, but would still have players writing exceptable CDs, even if they are not of great quality.

Second is the Admin, and lesser extent Mod inforcement of these rules and guides. I think we have all been to quick to impose our wants on players. I do not exclude myself from this, as I am quilty of this as well, but I believe we have been doing so to frequently to try and bring the bar up for new characters. Though raising the bar on character quality may be a good thing, we do not need as complex a system to deal with this. We just need to police ourselves and our fellow Admins and Mods better. We also need to stick to a decided set of minimum requirments (Which we may already have.), and decide when a character is ready by answering a set of simple questions to our selves:

1) Does it meet or exceed minimum requirements?
2) Does it fit into the world of Caelereth?
3) Is it complete? Is there anything left out that creats misunderstanding or obvious wholes that need to be fix? <= We must be careful with this one. No matter what system we use this question will be relevent, and there is now way to
4) Is the player finished developing the character? If the player ready to recieve a title for that character, or is he/she still working on it?

Bottem line here Rayne is I believe this system will actually scare more players off than a minimalistic system. Yes we need more players atracted to the RPG, but we need to keep them once they get here. I think we need a system with as little showing on the player end as possible. Not that we will hide the inner workings of such a system, just keep it out of casual sight so we are not making it look harder to do at a casual glance.

Thats pretty much right Drogo, though it is really Rayne who has to figure out the details of how elves will gain from this wizdom in terms of magic.
