Soc-cer...I don't think I got the memo grin To say the least soccer (or football as some countries insist on calling it) hardly exists here in Canada. Though it was on the news a few days ago and I have to say those horns are horrible, horrid, nasty, terrible and any other like word that you can think of ;)

Here it is! My first proposed entry...I hope you enjoy reading about it ;)
Changes in Maroon

The Junglepede (Silent Slitherer, Little Bane, Multifoot)
Categorization: Bestiary>Animals, Smaller>Insects>The Junglepede
   Basic Overview
In the fabled Scattersand Shoals, and the great jungle of Shar lives a beast that quietly scuttles with all of its many armour-plated legs seeking small animals to feed on. Its sinuous body when it appears means the death cry of a rat or a grounded flitterwing will soon follow.

Appearance
The mature Junglepede is approximately one fore long, nearly a palmspan in width and quite thin though larger ones have been seen before in the deepest, darkest parts of Aiden. As they age they will grow wider and if they are well-fed in their area will grow fatter. Most are mottled a dark brown and green though the closer it lives to the shore the lighter its colors will be. It is made up of many shiny and smooth armored segments with more segments meaning it has lived longer. For each segment, it has a pair of legs two and a half nailsbreadths long that unlike its main body are a murky yellow, except for the segment directly behind its head which has a pair of venomous fangs slightly longer than the legs and a bright orange. A Junglepede's head is equipped with segmented antennae with thick muscles which are four nailsbreadths long in adults and the same color as the main body. The rear segment is equipped with two antennae which are used to confuse predators as to which end is the front. Below these antennae are scent glands which are used to mark territory.

   Special Abilities
Junglepede's have venom in their large fangs which will kill smaller animals such as ratsin three minutes but will only make a larger creature feel intense pain and the area which is bitten will swell up. But before biting a larger creature such as a human or elf they will swell up and sway on their rear segments warning the creature off. If the creature continues it will surge forward and inflict a painful bite but without venom as this is a waste. The venom affects the heart, stopping it when the blood containing the venom reaches it. They also can squeeze through tiny spaces due to their segmented exoskeleton which will compact, making them smaller. The cause for this ability is that their exoskeleton is strangely flexible but still as strong as it is on any other insect. They also have scent glands in their rear segment allowing them to mark territory. The smell made by the scent glands has been described as: "By the Gods! How can anything smell so utterly foul?! I would expect a demon to smell better!"
-Anonymous

Territory
They live in the thick jungles of Aiden in the Scattersand Shoals, but also in the jungles of Shar in Nybelmar, the older beasts living inland in the thicker jungle while younger Hundred-leggers live near the shore or near clearings. Junglepedes only leave their territory for better territory or to mate. If any other Junglepedes wander into their territory they will lift their foremost segments and sway to warn them off. If the other beast ignores the insect whose territory this is it will attack, ramming into the other Junglepede and slamming it with its antennae. The other one will join in and eventually either the intruder or the occupier will flee, leaving the victor to mark its territory obliterating the scent of the loser.

Diet
They will eat any small animals they can find including rats, mice, small birds like Cuuloo and if they get the chance they will eat flitterwings which for whatever reason (e.g. old age, sickness, etc) are grounded. Those Junglepedes that live in the peninsula of Shar though have a more varied diet and will eat newborn verain lizards, lone quwish birds while the young eat any insects they can find. They hunt by waiting in their dens which are usually shallows under rotting logs or in the rotting log itself. When a small animal wanders into its territory it will attack, immediately piercing the unfortunate creature with its fangs. It will retreat until the creature dies so it may feed.

Mating
In spring the Junglepedes all come together near the shore where the males will flail their antennae at each other to fight for the chance to mate with the most females. After the contests and the mating is over the females will make nests under the roots of trees where they will lay approximately 100 eggs 2 grains in diameter. These eggs are brown, oval in shape and are very ridged imitating the feel of bark. The female will tend and guard these eggs until they hatch 2 weeks later as 2 nailsbreadths long juveniles with lighter coloring than the adults. The female will then leave the juveniles to fend for themselves as she ventures back to her territory. The juveniles will then separate claiming small patches of territory where they will eat various insects as they grow. Juveniles are light in color making it harder to see them as they are born in a clearer area but other than this and their size they are nearly identical to adults. The juveniles will grow quickly and will live up to 20 years. Juvenile Junglepedes are born with 5 segments and as they reach their sixth year of life will grow another segment. They will grow a segment a year until their death.

   Researchers
Knowledge of the lives of these creatures derives from the Eyelian researcher Genani Tallclimber Ra’nouf who left her home to explore and eventually came south. She came to the Scattersand Shoals and now lives there researching the various fauna of the islands such as the dragonbird. She is respected for the dangerous ventures she undertook to study these creatures.

Hmmmm...Smee just brought to my attention that a very good place for my creature might be the Scattersand Shoals. Would it be okay for me to settle them on Aiden?
12  Santharian World Development / The Santharian Bestiary / Re: Many, MANY LEGS!!! MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA on: 12 June 2010, 01:55:52
thanx everyone for the advice
@Seth: I think I saw something like that centipede once in a book but thanx for a link to a specific species  grin

Fine by me :)
14  Santharian World Development / The Santharian Bestiary / Re: Many, MANY LEGS!!! MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA on: 11 June 2010, 10:43:55
So can I develop it in Nybelmar?
15  Santharian World Development / The Santharian Bestiary / Many, MANY LEGS!!! MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA on: 11 June 2010, 09:55:01
I was looking through the bestiary for an absence of certain types of creepy crawlies and I have found a terrible fault and I am greatly saddened by this. For the bestiary lacks...drum roll please?...Centipedes and MILLIPEDES *at this he falls to ground laughing like the most deranged creature ever to walk the face of Caelereth*
So fellow compendiumists I plan to develop in a steamy jungle a giant centipede! which will be the terror of rats everywhere!! *this sets him off again as he seems to lose control* So I was thinking maybe Nybelmar? Or maybe Miraran's greenhouses? After all... one deadly organism deserves another ;)*Again he laughs at the same time the sound dwindling as he wanders out*
