This parchment in its original (unlabeled) form is a famous sketch from the hand of an unnamed artist of several centuries past.  We know him only as "The Master of Clymnios" since the few paintings and sketches we have of his were discovered in a cowbyre on the outskirts of Clymnios a hundred and fifty years ago.

It is commonly known as "The Vytruvyan Elf" since 'Vytruvyus - Styr.'  was scrawled across the back of the parchment and interpreted as 'Vitruvian - Styrash' at the time of discovery.    However, we have no records of a 'Vytruvyan' or 'Vitruvian' elven clan in any history book known to our Compendium, so perhaps the artist was indulging in some fantasy which was unfortunately unrecorded other than this one piece of art.   Alchemists claim a strikingly similar symbol, often shorthanded as a star inside a circle or like this (*), known as "The Splayed One", to be part of their lore for centuries agone, and several rather sensationalist pamphlets and scrolls have been published over the years in an attempt to associate the Master of Clymnios with one of the arcane subsects of alchemy such as the “Portalenes”, “Voidcarvers”, “Meditistics”, and “Babblers”.   (See the Alchemy Entry for further details...)

The Master's simple, spare style is reminiscent of folk art;  his subjects are captured in surprisingly natural ways and poses, with an economy of line that is nonetheless suggestive and humorous.   This particular anatomical study became immediately popular for its iconic quality and was immediately adopted by 'gymnashia' (athletes' training halls), chirurgeons and apothecaries, and even appeared on inn signs (with a flagon in one hand and a grape leaf strategically placed).   We have borrowed it here to illustrate some of the main muscular groupings on the humanoid body, and their common names as known to scholars and folk of erudition throughout the Santharian Kingdom, for your edification.

Masterbard, this is splendid and awe-inspiring. worship

I just had to say that!  I can't imagine this needs any more work, beautiful as it is.  Nonetheless, I'll offer, just in case--please, if I may offer any contribution to your study of the muscle groups, please tell me what I may do.

AAAARRRGH!    I can't believe (especially after that wonderfully ego-enhancing feedback) that I made such a huge booboo on this picture.

THERE ARE NO LINES indicating which muscles are mentioned.

Please let me go away and hit my head against a wall for a while... and then repost the CORRECTED version.

After which, Kelancy, if you see any main muscles missing that you think need Santharian names, please feel free to post here and I'll try to fit them in on the chart.  Much appreciated!

Very sorry about that!  Here's the new picture, with the appropriate lines to the muscle groups in question.   Thanks for viewing and commenting!

This is terrific as it is.  Just some cursory notes, like, what about the thumb (thenar and hypothenar) intrinsic muscles, the hamstrings, the shoulderblade muscles (trapezius/trapezii, supra- and infrascapularis)…They don’t really need to be separate muscle groups, and could well be included in the muscle groups you’ve already named.  Thank you immensely for having the breathers as a separate muscle group!  They’re really important muscles!

Kind of a correlary thought: Would people in Santharia study the facial muscles as well?  I’m a pretty poor artist, so I certainly won’t volunteer anyone else’s talent to do something that I’m not capable of doing.  Just thought it might be a neat companion to this excellent piece of artistry and scholarly work!

Fantastic work, Judith!  I love this anatomical sketch!

Well, that's quite an Easter egg we have here, Judy, and a lovely realized one as well :) Aside from the creative naming of the muscles and the very appropriate introductory text the scorched paper also looks very effective here, and it fits as well, as do the fonts used below.

Some comments:
- The written texts have opaque background, no transparency there - is that intended? Guess it wouldn't be necessary.
- The hair of the elf looks somewhat strange for an elf. Elves usually have long flowing hair, so this somehow seems a bit out of place to me.
- The other question is where exactly to use that piece of paper. It's not precisely an entry yet. Could also be put into Santhworld, but for that the text is too long, but part of it could be added. So I'm a bit unsure what to do with it. I like the idea though. It's good to make some Earthen references that way :)

BUMPING unabashedly!

This is to help contribute to the Body Parts discussion in the other thread....

(Bumps again for ease of Kelancy's reference and to remind herself to do a similar chart for the bones of the body this summer.....)

I've made a comment up there, which unfortunately remained unanswered in the last five years... Maybe something can still be done about that? But with Kelancey back the question where to put this picture should be possible to answer: definitely in one of the Doc's entries!  cool

Here's a thought:  There is already an entry on the site, under Medicine & Vitality, called Body Parts and Muscles.  The Vytruvyan Elf would work *splendidly* in that entry, if this could be added to it!

Files have been replaced again, but the question remains how long this will last. SMF support will have a look at the security problem.

It has been hacked. The third time in 3 days. I need to replace the changed files again (won't happen before evening) - and then see what the SMF support recommends as a strategy.

Arti, could you maybe take a look at the RPG board? I got a message from my anti-virus program and now I can't access the column on the right with the list of current threads and the shoutbox. Thankies :)
