The Clawfish
«
on:
04 September 2007, 01:17:29 »
Overview: The Clawfish is a costly food, usually eaten by
those of higher class
.
Despite this
in certain parts of the world it may be eaten by most, being a regular meal. Cost depends on the type of Clawfish, the size, and the distance traveled before being bought. There are 3 types of Clawfish, similar in almost everyway except for the color and a slight size difference in the claw. Red Clawfish are usually the kind royalty eat.
The Blue Clawfish is the most common Clawfish ate by normal people, though it is still usually only eaten for important celebrations or other such things
. It is called blue though it really has a purple tint to it. The darkness of the tint varies between each Clawfish. Green Clawfish are eaten by those who catch them and sold for the lowest price. Each kind weighs, on average, 2 Ods, though they can become quite large. The largest one that was recorded was 4 Hebs.
They are commonly called Clawfish or Lobsters.
Appearance: Though the each Clawfish is a different color the shape of the bodies are almost completely alike. The main part of the Clawfish is a hard oval shell with tiny bumps all over. The eyes come out the front side though the eyesight of the Clawfish is not very good. They mainly use the short little antennae that are above the eyes. They also have a tail that is usually curled up into a ball. They usually walk across the sand at the bottom of the water body, though the tails can propell them quickly away if they feel dangered. The legs of the Clawfish come out of the side of the oval body and go out about 2 nailsbreadths before turning a full 90 degrees. There are 2 of these legs on either side of the main body. Each Clawfish has is a different color, though they stay in the same range of green, blue/purple, or red.
Special Ability: The Clawfish has only one special ability, and that is to move quickly. The normally curled up tail is uncurled and curled again quickly propelling it a distance and doing this repeatedly the clawfish move quite fast.
This is their lone defense, apart from their claws, against predators.
Territory: In any of the oceans you can usually find them. But they are highly concentrated in the Aelyvain Sea.
Unlike fish, Clawfish crawl slowly on the seafloor and catch the small fish swimming at the bottom.
Habitat/Behavior: The Clawfish usually travel alone fending for themselves. They are usually swimming around searching for food or for a mate. If kept in captivity they sometime turn to cannibals, though in the wild this is very rare. To grow, Clawfish must molt. This leaves them vulnerable to attack. They molt whenever their rigid, hard shell is too small.
Predators typicly leave the Clawfish alone because they know that the shell is hard and that the Clawfish can jet away quickly. However, they have learned that they are most vulnerable when molting and thus attack the ones that can not jet quickly and have no hard shell to protect them.
Diet:Their diet consist of small fish, mollusks, worms, and some plants. They either chase down their food or they catch it. When they chase it down they use their tail to propel them faster than the thing can swim. When they catch they lie without moving and wait for the fish to come by. When they are with in range the Clawfish quickly grabs it
with it's claws.
Mating: When Clawfish mate a male finds a molting female. The female's shell is still soft then. The male flips the female over and produces sperm. The female collects the sperm and can hold it for about a year. The female will usually will use the sperm a year after the male mated with her. Then she carries the thousands of fertilized eggs in her curled tail. Many die because of disease, predators, fishers, and parasites. A young female can lay about a thousand eggs while an older female can lay 10's of thousands.
Many are lost before they even hatch, predators and disease commonly wipe out hundredds at a time.
Usages:The Clawfish are mainly used as food. To fishing cities it may be a common food, while the farther inland the more pricey and more a delicacy.
I might add some recipes when i can think of some.

Lobsters should be mentioned as an alternative name, in my opinion, since there are entries that mention lobsters.

Lobsters - great! Remove 'crabs' as an alternate name, though, because Santharian crabs are Spiddles (Spiderturtles - a great 'kenning'!).
Will try to comment further later (preparing to fly to Canada for winter vacation! Expect to hear a lot more from me in the next two months...

Sure, will try to find time for some suggestions today!
Could we add the Terran crayfish/crawfish into this entry as well, and say something like 'For centuries our ancestors did not distinguish between XXX and Clawfish, considering the miniature XXX simply the infant versions. Nowadays they are considered related separate species (or whatever word we choose instead) - cousins, as t'were..." and then give some information about them. I think Santharian taxonomists would group them together in a medieval bestiary, don't you?
That way we could have the large sea-dwelling, salt-water Clawfish and the small river-dwelling, fresh-water XXX... (any ideas for a name there? )
I feel a receipt or two coming on!

Oooh, both! They are toooooo delightful to have to choose.
I say Mudbug in the north and Yabby in the central south. Perhaps in the low south past the escarpment (Strata, Isles, etc.) it could actually be "Yabi"...
Though on second thought I'm not sure about Mudbug as it's misleading - Mudclacker? Mudcrabber? Mudclaw?
But 'Yabby' for sure!

I've been somewhat neglective of my Mod duties recently due to RL problems and organising the Awards....lets see if I can remedy this eh?
Overview: The Clawfish is a costly food, usually eaten by those
high in political rank
of higher class
.
Despite this
in certain parts of the world it may be eaten by most, being a regular meal. Cost depends on the type of Clawfish, the size, and the distance traveled before being bought. There are 3 types of Clawfish, similar in almost everyway except for the color and a slight size difference in the claw. Red Clawfish are usually the kind
royalty
eat. The Blue Clawfish is the most commonly the kind citizens eat though it is still usually ate for important celebrations or such things
(What? That last sentence really confused me).
It is called blue though it really has a purple tint to it.
And
The
darkness of the tint varies between each Clawfish. Green Clawfish are eaten by those who catch them and
sell
for the lowest price. Each kind weighs, on average, 2 Ods and 7 Mut, though they can become quite large. The largest one was recorded at 4 Hebs and 9 Mut. They are commonly called Clawfish or Lobsters.
(hmmm....a pet peeve of mine is people who use exact measurements to refer to RL weights....simply leaving it in ods or hebs would be much better IMO)
Special Ability: The Clawfish has only one special ability, and that is to move quickly. The normally curled up tail is uncurled and curled again quickly propelling it a distance and doing this repeatedly the clawfish
move
quite fast.
This is useful when...
Territory: In any of the oceans you can usually find them. But they are highly concentrated in the Aelyvain Sea.
Maybe also talk about how they live on the seabed rather than swimming around like actual fish.
Habitat/Behavior: The Clawfish usually travel alone fending for themselves. They are usually swimming around searching for food or for a mate. If kept in captivity they sometime turn to cannibals
, though
in the wild this is very rare. To grow, Clawfish must molt. This leaves them vulnerable to attack. They molt whenever their rigid, hard shell is to small. their biggest predator is sharks of any sort. The sharks have enough power in their mouth to crush the shell and kill the Clawfish quickly. This is why their ability to move quickly when in danger is so useful.
Wait...you just say they are very vunerable when they molt because they lose their shells protection...you then say they are vunerable to sharks at this stage, who can easily break the shells anyway?
Diet:Their diet consist of small fish, mollusks, worms, and some plants. They either chase down their food or they catch it. When they chase it down they use their tail to propel them faster than the thing can swim. When they catch they lie without moving and wait for the fish to come by. When they are with in range the Clawfish quickly grabs it
with its claws?.
WHAT! THEN WHY ARENT THE WATERS OVERPOPULATED WITH LOBSTERS! THINK ABOUT....IN TWO GENERATIONS YOU CAN HAVE MILLIONS!!!
Usages:The Clawfish are mainly used as food. To fishing cities it may be a common food, while the farther inland the more pricey and more a delicacy.
...Quite short this...maybe expand to reigonal recipes or other more unusual uses?
