I know I already have a proposal to work on, but random flights of inspiration should be used not ignored right? *bats eyelids winningly* I have not forgotton the Brownie Beads - just put them to one side for a bit until more inspiration hits.

The truth is that Mr. Mira mentioned in the IRC that the Drifting Woods were looking for inhabitants, and after reading the fascinating entry I kind of thought up this little mammal.  It is actually a strange mix of prehistoric horse, pig, meerkat and um....camel.  With webbed feet.

Overview

The Pfool is a small, partially aquatic mammal which lives solely in the traitorous terrain of the Drifting Woods.  It looks somewhat like a tiny, extremely stocky horse, but also sports four-toed webbed feet and a large raised collar of stored fat. A peaceful, shy creature, it spends most of it's days floating in the warm waters and grazing on the lush foliage of it's forest home.  The Pfool's main defence is it's ability to move comfortably on either land or water, in the midst of the undergrowth or in an open clearing.  When attacked by an animal that favours a particular type of terrain, it will simply change it as quickly as possible. They usually form small family or bachelor groups, though some of the more aggressive males are known to wander alone.

Where do you get it from lol

One smallish thing: it's 'partially', not 'partically' ;)

Um, it doesn't look much like a beaver as it has much longer legs and neck plus no tail.  Its also a herbivore not a rodent.  It doesn't make dams or nests like beavers do.  It doesn't swim underwater, mearly floats on it to eat plant matter around the edges.  It doesn't live with one partner its whole life, but forms small family/bachelor groups and the different genders only meet up for mating.

So not a beaver ;)

Adorable!

Name brainstorming:

Meer (cos it's cool, honest!  And a little Easter egg, cos no one will think 'meerkat' when they read the description)

Pfool (after the sound it makes clearing water from its nasal passages)

Waterboar (peasant name for its appearance)

Gobhorse (ditto - a boorish joke on its clumsy shape, claiming it to be a goblin steed.  I like this one because of the pun and the heavy, rather clumsy sound of the name)

Mereboar (I rather like this too because a 'mere' is an old word for lake, plus it puns on the 'meerkat' reference again)

Meermare (obvious)

Cozoloy ('Cousin to the Oloy', a Santharian otter)

Drifthog

Waterhogget

Seashoat  (ooh, fun!)

Feel free to use more than one of these, as in real life!  Or ignore them all... :P

Actually, I love the name "Pfool".  Its just such a good sound.  Plus naming it after a noise would solve the problem of languages (as the "Vikh are probably the only people to see it more than once, and they don't speak Tharian).

Yay!

*general happyness*

And thats indeed the best choice from Judy's suggestions! (Although Meer would have been fine as well)

OK, maybe not the coolest, but still.

*joins in yaying*

Glad you like it :D

I quite liked "Meer" too, it makes me think of the sea. But "Pfool" is just such a cool sounding word - shame to waste it.  Although I want to pronounce it Pfül I think.

Edit after reading Morc's comment:  lol Its gotta be "Pfool" then really hasn't it.

A little, but to be honest I just made it up starting with a prehistoric horse and then adapted it to the Drifting Woods, changing a lot along the way.  It doesn't look that much like a water deer and it isn't solitary either.  Wait for the full entry! hehe.
