I've thought about what to realize next with Santhworld, or more precisely: What I should add from the programming point of view that would be useful as a first step in more complex things to come and can as well exist as an entertaining standalone thing. This led me to the trivia system.

Maybe you remember that we already planned a while ago to introduce quizzes in Santharia that could be member made. The problem was that there was no secure Java/PHP-Script for that. Such trivia quizzes usually look that way: There are several questions which you have to work through. You get questions presented, one after the other, ideally you see a picture related to it and then have multiple choices to select the right answer. After 10 questions or so the quiz is over and you get your score presented, sometime also with an evaluation how well you fared (1-3=loser, 9-10=hero etc.). The correct answers could be either shown after the quiz or after you have answered each question by telling you whether you were right or wrong.

All these things seem to be realizable with not too much effort with Santhworld. At least I have the complete concept already in my head, so I will try to work on that next.

Such trivia quizzes will be available in an own module and by selecting a specific keyword/topic you'll get to the trivia of your choice (e.g. Bestiary, Herbarium, People, Places, Fun Stuff etc.). For starters I will realize a simple consecutive questions quiz, which means that there are, say, 10 questions predefined, and they are presented always in the same order.

The key expansion will then be to create a pool of questions, let's say of 50, and the program allows you to take a quiz of 5, 10, 15 etc. questions by selecting randomly from any of the questions in the pool and make an individual quiz for you. The pool can be constantly expanded of course (without any costs regarding resources), and thus the whole thing can grow naturally as we go along and get some more ideas to add. :) - What do you think?

I think it sounds wonderful! An idea for the rankings: 0-3: peasant, 3-6: citizen, 6-9: adventurer, 9-10: hero. I hardly need to add that this is just a suggestion and that any other/better suggestions are welcome :P

Yes, something like that, indeed... :) As far as the rankings I first need to get, as I need to program it first so that I can wrap a quiz up properly, and for that I need to be able to tell Santhworld how to set and reset scores and the like. This will also be useful in other modules of course.

A few things for now:

- I plan to start with a topic specific trivia, so we should select something. Maybe we should first go with a Bestiary trivia as we have a lot there. If anyone has good questions in this regard, let me know.

- The best effect of course is reached if each question can be accompanied by a picture. So especially for a first quiz I would favour questions that have pictures.

- And finally: If you put up questions, ideally mention the answer as well. Perfect would be to have short explainations for the "Correct" or "Incorrect" screen - these little snippets of information are valuable as they really explain something Santharian to the one making the test. For example:

You are correct!

The Erpheronian Thar the Great indeed was the ruler of a gigantic realm that comprised an area of four former kingdoms of Southern Sarvonia, namely Erpheronia, Centorauria, Caltharia and Kyrania. The realms were united in 492 b.S. forming the Kingdom of "Thariania", named after its founder.

Ah, that was wrong...

Master Tribell was quite a famous person, alas not a king as you thought. He lived from 1240 until 1315 a.S. and is known as the Great Santharian Story-Teller. The former acrobat and member of a joined a traveling troupe collected endless folk-tales, fairy-tales, fables and the like, which were published in the book "Master Trbell's Miraculous Narrations" shortly after his death. Since then his tremendous work is in the heart and minds of Santharian children and adults alike.

Better?

If someone asks you what 'Oloy' means, you would confidently answer:

a) a type of pea-like vegetable
b) a sleek water-dwelling animal
c) a verb meaning to melt or forge two metals together
d) a soothing ointment

a)  Sorry, no - you must have been thinking of the Oya Pea.  It's a legume which while prickly and unattractive on the outside, can be used to make a number of useful and nutritious foodstuffs, from the almost meat-like 'Oyoosh jelly' to the salty black dwarven condiment 'Moorgall'.

b) Correct!  This sleek Nybelmarnian otter is known as the Oloy to most, a simpler form of the mermish name "Oolboïéabey".  Frequenting the Drifting Woods of Nybelmar, it is an amazing diver with an excellent sense of smell.  It is rarely spotted above-water by humans, but most of those sightings occur when the Oloy is devouring its prey - the silvery fish that are profusely found in the dark waters of the Drifting woods.

c) Incorrect.  Possibly you misheard 'Alloy' instead of 'Oloy'?  The dwarves of Sarvonia are excellent at forging the various minerals and ores found on their continent: most common are iron ( in its black, blue, grey, and red variants), tin, lead, copper, silver, and gold.  The beautiful ores  aurium and ithildin, fyrite and herne, and malthanune are rarer but still used frequently, while the precious mithril is no longer known to be actively mined anywhere within Caelereth.   Brass, bronze, steel, pewter and other alloys have been worked for the past several thousand years.

d) Incorrect.  While the Jeshanna Ointment, made from the lily of that name, the Yahrle Cream (made from the wayside herb also known as Staunchweed), and the 'Brandi's' invented by Dalmac Brandivere, are all common medications known across Santharia, and do allay the pain of burns, cuts, rashes, and other household injuries, there exists no 'Oloy' Ointment at this time.

Trivia is well on its way :) I can increase, decrease, reset and output a score in the meantime, have integrated a bunch of standard pics that fit nicely into the module, and in general have a system in place that allows me to execute code during program runtime (e.g. preparing consecutive random questions). Now I only need to interpret that properly upon output and the technical side of the trivia is completed. So that should be possible to handle tomorrow.

What I still need of course are a bunch of further questions similar to Judy's example, as a quiz of one question is a bit meager...  grin - The more the merrier!

So, Bestiary questions to begin with? I'll see if I can get some questions together ^.^

edit: This picture, does it come in when asking the question or giving the answer? Or both?

I like the One Question Quiz... Maybe by the fourth time I take it, I might pass :D

Very nice Idea, Art.  Something like this could conceivably be used on the main page to entice newcomers.

I would have to say - the answer - otherwise you could rather easily tell whether an Oloy was a process, a food, or an animal, eh?

Yeah, in this quiz it should be always the answer where the picture is displayed in order to keep it consistent. We've started that way. It can be the other way round in different quizzes of course - you get a picture and a question related to it.

At the moment I have only a "Thinking..." picture (displayed when the question is asked) and an "Oh no"-picture to go with a wrong answer, so it's perfect to have the right answer picture displayed instead of a standard "Oh yes" pic. So I still need to find something for that.

P.S. The system on how the trivia works can of course also be used in Santhworld adventures, for example to ensure that someone solves a lever riddle and pulls levers or presses buttons in the correct order. If the "score" of the selections the player makes is identical with the asked "questions", then the puzzle is solved and the player can progress to a new location etc.

Basic functions now working :) Expect a demo with a few questions later today!

I will add in the Drasil and the Fuzzle Mouse, so in case you want to provide a question or two as well, these two I'll do.

So is it b) or c)? :) Anyway, I've done that one already :P - Oh, and I managed to pull of the evaluation as well (you get a score and a trivia rank once you're done), so the technical side is completed for now! :D (Except the randomization of questions, which nevertheless is 80% prepared. Only need more questions so that one makes sense.)

Now let's see if I can add in some more questions, and we'll be ready for a little quiz soon!

Whoo-hooo!  I have just gotten home from church: I've been invited to a birthday party at 3:00  this afternoon, then I'm over at a neighbor's place this evening.... but I hope to contribute a few questions yet myself... :)

Bravo for the 'behind-the-scenes' technical work, Art, which is so unglamorous but so essential.  I can see and appreciate the applications of all the various programs you've written over the years for Santharia - unsung genius!
